"Why is this happening?"

BREAKING: "Ukraine’s Jewish community has announced that the 91-year-old Holocaust survivor Vanda Obiedkova perished while sheltering in a Mariupol basement. As she lay dying, freezing and pleading for water, she wanted to know only one thing: 'Why is this happening?' ”

Lawrence Tribe:

"Why? Because Putin is a butcher, a war criminal, and a pitiless monster with boundless ambition and a lust for power and a yearning for empire."

Why is this happening in America?

The Trumpublican Party, Donald J. Trump, has nothing but praise for Putin:

"Former President Donald Trump...described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as 'genius' and 'savvy,' praising his onetime counterpart for a move that has spurred sanctions and universal condemnation from the U.S. government and its trans-Atlantic allies. 'I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful,' Trump said in a radio interview with 'The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.' 'He used the word ‘independent’ and ‘we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.’ You gotta say that’s pretty savvy.' ”

The Tucker Carlson anti-democracy show is the most popular cable news program in America. Here he is telling his viewers -- Trump cultists -- that he supports Russia against a democratic Ukraine:

Tucker: "Why do I care what is going on in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? I'm serious. Why shouldn't I root for Russia? Which by the way I am."

And here are some of the folks who support the guy who lost the 2020 election:

We'll never forget who the Trumpublicans supported during Ukraine's fight to keep its independence from the war criminal and butcher of men, women, and children.

And we won't forget who President Zelensky thanked for supporting his country in their darkest hours:

I’m grateful to @POTUS & 🇺🇸 people for the leadership in supporting the people of Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. This help is needed today more than ever! It saves the lives of our defenders of democracy and freedom and brings us closer to restoring peace in 🇺🇦.

Proposed Tennessee bill would make homelessness a felony

Tennessee lawmakers are close to sending Republican Gov. Bill Lee a proposal that would threaten felony penalties against homeless people who camp on local public property — including in parks — and misdemeanors for camping around highways.

The Tennessee Senate voted 20-10 Wednesday to advance the bill, with four Republicans joining Democrats in opposition. The House already passed a version of the legislation last year.

Both Republican-dominated chambers need to hash out differences in what they approved. Opponents have said the legislation does nothing to help reduce homelessness, while potentially making it harder for homeless people to rise out of extreme poverty if they have a felony on their records.

Why is it that the "Bible Belt" states are the states that propose and seek to pass legislation that makes life more miserable for the already down-trodden and unfortunate citizens in their states?

Doesn't their Savior say in their Holy Book to welcome the stranger, and to feed and clothe the hungry? Not make them criminals?

Just recently, Tennessee almost passed legislation that would allow child brides. The bill had no age limit on the marriageable age.

I sometimes wonder why the so-called "Bible Belt" ignores their Christian ideals and passes legislation to make criminals out of their fellow citizens who've fallen on hard times.

Apparently, they don't believe in charity, compassion, and helping one's fellow citizens.

RNC to America: "No more presidential debates!"

The RNC has announced that it is pulling out of the presidential debates.

RIP Presidential Debates: 1960 -- 2020:

A friend sent this email to me in response to the news:

"If the Republicans actually believed Biden is senile and incapable of expressing a thought in a complete sentence, they would avidly advocate for numerous debates. The members of the Republican National Committee understand the factual state of affairs: Trump is incapable of sustaining his own focus long enough to formulate a complete sentence and, when on a debate stage engaged one-on-one with a Democratic opponent, comes across as a stalking thug.

Most Republicans also fear the light of truth that anything approximating an intellectually responsible debate might expose. Why? Because they must advance their own political-economic interests and those of their mega-donors, all the while retaining the loyalty of their readily manipulated populist base. They employ emotive, mendacious and distractive modes of manipulation to attain their actual policy objectives—objectives many of which are so unpopular that they dare not state them publicly. The Rick Scott plan—raise-taxes-on-the-poor, eliminate Social Security, etc.—is replete with wildly unpopular proposals.

Republican candidates benefit from the loyalty of many base voters who are incapable of recognizing gross oversimplification, cherry-picking and whataboutism for the fallacies that they are. GOP pols are “conservatives” who do not conserve. If they had their druthers, they would destroy, rather than improve, virtually every program and policy that benefits the general public or which curbs the power of their mega-donors."

What do you think?

Trump did this to America, Part the infinity

Below is a photo of a pro-Trump, anti-Biden conservative family displaying their wholesome right-wing family values.

Because teaching your children to give the finger and repeat "F**k You" to the POTUS is a true Trumpublican family value.

The women in the black fishnet stocking twerking their bare asses in the background is a particularly nice family touch, innit?

A reminder of what Trump did to our country:

Football legend, Hershel Walker, has been endorsed by Trump for the US Senate from Georgia. He'll be in a primary runoff on May 24 against other Republican/Trumpublican contenders.

Here's what we know about Walker, so far, and it's all of a piece with how Trump lied his way to his nomination for POTUS. Trump proudly endorsed Walker for the US Senate.

PS. Recently, Walker wondered why there are still monkeys if Evolution claims that we came from them. The egregious idiocy contained in that musing is embarrassing and should have disqualified him on the spot. But he was endorsed by Trump, and that's all Trump's cultists need to know about any candidate.

Thanks to Trump, the Trumpublican Party now is proud to run a liar like Walker for a US Senate seat. And not one of them seems to care.

"In Conference Call Before Riot, a Plea to ‘Descend on the Capitol"

BREAKING NEWS:

"Trump told McConnell in Dec. 2020 that if Kemp decertified Biden’s win, PA and MI would follow. McConnell maintained strategic silence on Trump’s claims over fears that Trump would sabotage Loeffler and Perdue in the Georgia US Senate race.

Trump’s private pitch to McConnell and a group of Senate Repubublican in December 2020: "If Governor Kemp flips and decertifies GA, PA and MI will follow suit and overturn Biden’s win."

CNN:  "And Trump was certain he could subvert the election outcome, telling McConnell, then the Senate majority leader, and other top Republicans that he had personally been on the phone with officials in Pennsylvania and Michigan -- and they told him they would move to keep him in power, despite the results showing Biden had won their states."

McConnell knew of Trump's seditious plot. Trump told McConnell his plan to subvert the laws of the United States and install himself -- the loser of the election -- as POTUS for a second term.

McConnell said and did nothing!

Jason Sullivan: "If we make the people inside that building sweat and they understand that they may not be able to walk in the streets any longer if they do the wrong thing, then maybe they’ll do the right thing,” Sullivan said, according to a recorded copy of the call obtained by the Times."

Go to the NYTimes link below and listen to Jason Sullivan talk about how to intimidate members of Congress into not certifying the electoral college vote, and listen to him brag how Trump will not let that happen because "he has principles."

You will hear in this voice recording how Trumpers planned to overthrow a free and fair election and illegitimately install Trump for a second term, against the will of the American people:

The New York Times

"One week before an angry mob stormed the Capitol, a communications expert named Jason Sullivan, a onetime aide to Roger J. Stone Jr., joined a conference call with a group of President Donald J. Trump’s supporters and made an urgent plea.

After assuring his listeners that the 2020 election had been stolen, Mr. Sullivan told them that they had to go to Washington on Jan. 6, 2021 — the day that Congress was to meet to finalize the electoral count — and “descend on the Capitol,” according to a recording of the call obtained by The New York Times.

While Mr. Sullivan claimed that he was “not inciting violence or any kind of riots,” he urged those on the call to make their presence felt at the Capitol in a way that would intimidate members of Congress, telling the group that they had to ensure that lawmakers inside the building “understand that people are breathing down their necks.”

He also pledged that Mr. Trump was going to take action on his own; the president, he said, was going to impose a form of martial law on Jan. 6 and would not be leaving office.

'Biden will never be in that White House,' Mr. Sullivan declared. 'That’s my promise to each and every one of you.' ”

Jason Sullivan and the people on the damning call were planning on intimidating members of Congress, who would be exercising their Constitutional duties by certifying the 2020 election results, because they listened to and believed Trump's Big Lie.

Trump himself knew he lost the election, even though he continued to tell his gullible followers that it was stolen.

Trump is on video, admitting he "lost the election," and said so. don't believe me?

Here he is:

DeSantis Threatens Voters in Georgia!

So now we have the governor of Florida warning the people of Georgia that a new "Cold War" will break out if they choose to vote for someone DeSantis does not like!

DeSantis, a little authoritarian Trumpublican threatened Americans against voting their choice for governor -- just like the a good little tyrant would -- or else!

Don't forget that he's what the Trumpublican sees as the future of this country: Bullying neighbors into NOT VOTING FOR THEIR CHOICE OR ELSE!

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Friday warned of a coming “Cold War” between Florida and Georgia if Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams wins the gubernatorial election in the latter state.

During a press conference in Gulf County, located in northwest Florida, DeSantis referenced the ongoing Masters golf tournament in Georgia, using it as an apparent segue into discussing the state’s elections. DeSantis said he “really appreciates our Georgians” but that voters would have to “take care” of the 2022 election to prevent Abrams from winning.

“If Stacey Abrams is elected governor of Georgia, I just want to be honest, that will be a cold war between Florida and Georgia,” he said. “I can’t have [former Cuban communist leader Raul] Castro to my south and Abrams to my north, that would be a disaster. So I hope you guys take care of that and we’ll end up in good shape.”

BTW, the idiot governor of Florida doesn't know that Raul Castro is NOT the leader of Cuba? The leader of Cuba is Miguel Díaz-Canel.

And the words, "take care" are threatening words to the voters of Georgia who would exercise their right to vote for a candidate of THEIR choice, not the choice of the tyrannical governor of Florida.

The Trump Family's Treachery Against the United States

Here's a text from Trump's son, Donald Trump, Junior, telling Trump's Chief of Staff how they can steal the election if Trump loses. This text was sent TWO days after the election, BEFORE the winner was declared.

But Hunter's laptop?

Holy Treachery!

The former president's son is on record telling the president's CoS how they'll bypass the American people's decision on who the next president will be and install his father for a second term.

From the New York Times:

"Former President Donald J. Trump’s eldest son sent the White House chief of staff a text message two days after Election Day in 2020 that laid out strategies for declaring his father the winner regardless of the electoral outcome, people familiar with the exchange said on Friday.

The text, which was reported earlier by CNN, was sent two days before Joseph R. Biden Jr. was declared the winner of the election. The recipient, Mark Meadows, turned a cache of his text messages over to the House committee investigating the events leading up to the deadly riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as the Electoral College results in Mr. Biden’s favor were being certified.

“It’s very simple,” Donald Trump Jr. wrote to Mr. Meadows on Nov. 5, 2020. He wrote at another point, “We have multiple paths We control them all.”

The message went on to lay out a variety of options that Mr. Trump or his allies ultimately employed in trying to overturn the results of the election, from legal challenges to promoting alternative slates of electors to focusing efforts on the statutory date of Jan. 6 for certification of the Electoral College results."

In any other time in my life, this story would have the American people running around with their hair on fire talking about how the FORMER GUY's son had plans to steal the election from the rightful winner, EVEN BEFORE A WINNER WAS DECLARED!

But Donald Trump's treachery, lies, and crimes are so numerous, we can hardly digest them in time to show our utter disgust and revulsion for what he's done to our republic.

Here's more evidence of the Trump family's malfeasance and plans to overthrow a free and fair election:

"The text message that Donald Trump Jr. sent to Mr. Meadows acknowledged that scenario, which was championed by a lawyer advising President Trump, John C. Eastman. 'We either have a vote WE control and WE win OR it gets kicked to Congress 6 January 2021,' the text message said."

They all belong in prison.

AN HISTORIC DAY TODAY

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

Meanwhile, in one of America's "pro-family" states:

"The bill’s sponsor, Tom Leatherwood (R-Arlington) says the law being considered would add a new marriage option for Tennesseans, according to WKRN.

'So, all this bill does is give an alternative form of marriage for those pastors and other individuals who have a conscientious objection to the current pathway to marriage in our law,' says Leatherwood.

Missing from the bill are age requirements, opening the door for possible child marriages. Something the bill sponsor acknowledged during a Children and Family Affairs subcommittee.

Imagine removing age requirements for marriage, making marriage to a child of any age legal.

Here's a Tennessee Republican who began grooming his now wife when she was as young as 12 or 13-years-old and then married her the second he could. He was 46-years-old when they married.

Meanwhile:

We wonder how far into the sewer the current Trumpublican Party will go to dig up filth, and then their Congressional representatives gleefully show us.

Several far right blogs are commenting...

on a video of President Biden walking round in a crowd, looking lost and being ignored.

Of course, those far right blogs conveniently forget this image of Trump being totally ignored on the international stage at a G20 meeting:

And this one where Trump wanders off away from the presidential limo and his aides have to direct him to the ride he wandered past:

So what does it all mean?

Not much.

These are moments that show presidents in different situations being human.

They signify nothing.

Mikhail Baryshnikov

By Mikhail Baryshnikov 🇺🇦
It’s been almost 50 years since I lived in Russia, and I’ve spent those years living in a free society, but I grew up in Latvia as the son of a Russian military officer in what was then the USSR. My family was part of an occupying population, but even occupied Latvia was more open, and more European, than Russia at that time. So, I am a product of Europe, of Russia and, of course, of America. For what they are worth, my thoughts are filtered through this specific lens.
From the start of the invasion of Ukraine by the armies of Vladimir Putin, I’ve felt deep dread and a certainty that this will be a bloody and horrific conflict. I understood immediately that this move of the Russian army was more threatening than the so-called annexation of Crimea and the separatist insurgency in the Donbas region.
Ukrainians have always been, and still are, friends, neighbors and family. The relationship between the Russian and Ukrainian peoples has been one of easy fluidity between languages, between cultures and between borders. The two countries are incredibly interwoven, but with an awareness and appreciation of subtle cultural differences.
I can’t begin to understand why people would trust and follow a leader like Putin, but Russians historically have struggled under oppressive and brutal leadership. How they end up with such leaders I can’t answer. There are dozens of books to be written on this subject, but let’s remember that even in the free and democratic society in which I live, a shocking percentage of Americans appear to believe outlandish theories related to a “stolen” 2020 election. What this tells me is that ignorance of history and nationalistic fervor are not exclusive to any one country.
I refuse to paint all Russians with the same brush and I think Putin appeals to those who are fearful. I suppose he makes them feel safe in the same way all authoritarian leaders make their people feel protected. It’s a false sense of security because, of course, any day, the protected can easily become the persecuted.
I can’t affect politics or throw Molotov cocktails, and I am not competent to give any thoughts or advice on the matter of what kind of help the U.S., NATO or the Europeans could or should provide to the Ukrainians, but the least I can do is help as many refugees as possible. That’s why I am honored to have been invited by the great writer Boris Akunin and economist Sergei Guriev to join them in launching truerussia.org. I don’t know if True Russia’s humanitarian plea will be seen by citizens of Russia, but the beauty of cyberspace is that it might. They need to know what is being done in their name.
Again, I wouldn’t be worth much as a fighter, but when the Ukrainians are victorious, I would be honored to go and thank them for fighting. In fact, they aren

GUEST POST BY DAVE MILLER

 Thinking about Rose Mary Woods

I first learned her name as a young kid after walking precincts with my brother’s wife in support of the reelection campaign of President Nixon. With a brother in the military during the Vietnam War, there was no way I was supporting a “Communist supporting man” like George McGovern.

We were Young Republicans and proud of it.

But then came the hearings. And eventually the White House tapes. Soon the transcripts were delivered to our house, word for word in a special Los Angeles Times Watergate section.

With the famous gap. 18.5 minutes of silence.

There, in front of America was evidence of a coverup. The Nixon Administration it was argued, was guilty of not providing to Congress, as ordered by US Courts, tapes of conversations between the President and his Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman.

Congress was interested in those tapes because they were captured by the president's secret White House recording system in the days immediately following the break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters.

But those tapes contained a mysterious 18.5-minute gap -- a patch of buzzes and clicks of missing audio -- in the middle of a recording made June 20, 1972, three days after the break-in.

18.5 minutes.

In the aftermath of the Watergate Scandal, Congress passed the Presidential Records Act. It ultimately made all communications and documents of the Executive Branch, property of the US Government.

This law includes memos, emails, texts, phone logs and more.

It was passed to help us better know what our government was doing and, in the event of a potential crime, to help provide evidence to convict, or exonerate members of the Executive Branch, including the President of the United States.

All of that came about because of 18.5 minutes.

A short length of time that ultimately brought down a presidency and ended the career of Rose Mary Woods, Nixon’s longtime political secretary.

Which brings us to today and that Presidential Records Act, passed in 1978.

We can quibble with the law, we can say we hate the law, but, as the Supreme Court has frequently said, the law is the law. If you don’t like it, change it. But until then, follow it.

That law is in the news today because the National Archives, where the Executive Branch sends their records for safekeeping in accordance with the law, was recently ordered to turn over to Congress White House call records from January 6. Which they did.

Except those records from the White House are incomplete. It seems a block of time that we know from other records included calls to and from the White House, is mysteriously missing.

Shades of Rose Mary Woods.

Except this time it is not 18.5 minutes, it’s over 7 hours!

What the Trump White House wants us to believe is that for over 7 hours, no one called the president. And the president called no one. Not a single call came into or went out of the White House while the Capitol was under a sustained attack that injured more than 100 Capitol police officers.

Take a minute and let that sink in.

The White House defense is that they made no calls during that debacle. They are essentially saying while they watched the beating of police officers live on television in the Oval Office, they felt no need to call anyone to help those officers or to try and stop the attack.

While we know from other members of the administration that the above defense is fundamentally untrue, we are still left with an administration that has apparently violated the Presidential Records Act.

This is a choose your poison moment.

Either the Trump Administration chose not to “protect and defend” the US while the Capitol was under direct attack, or they are lying and made a decision to break the law calling for the proper safeguarding of presidential records.

President Nixon might well have survived the Watergate Scandal even after the tapes became known. But that 18.5 minute gap was too much even for his political allies.

I wonder if any leader in the GOP today can summon the courage of Howard Baker and Barry Goldwater back then and say enough is enough. For the sake of our democracy and so that we can still credibly claim are a nation of laws, I hope so.

Because President Trump, his administration and his enablers must be held to account for their actions on January 6 and for flouting the Presidential Records Act of 1978.

What say you?

SATURDAY NIGHT DANCING

These are all "Republicans," and they're running for office!

I follow several far right blogs to see what they write about, and one of those far right blogs is always whining about how "unhinged" the Democrats are.

Really?

Apparently, they haven't bothered to look at the people the RNC is supporting for elective office.

Unhinged doesn't express what these nutbags, who want to represent the "Republican Party" are!
