GENERAL POWELL, GENERAL PETRAEUS
POWELL: "We are NOT LESS SAFE under Obama."
Claims that the United States is less safe under President Obama are not credible, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said on "Face the Nation" Sunday.
He also challenged criticism by some (including former Vice President Dick Cheney, who say that by not using extreme interrogation techniques such as waterboarding on terror suspects the United States is more vulnerable.
"The point is made, 'We don't waterboard anymore or use extreme interrogation techniques.' Most of those extreme interrogation techniques and waterboarding were done away with in the Bush administration," Powell said. "They've been made officially done away with in this current administration."

Powell stuck by his conviction that Guantanamo Bay prison facility should be closed. "I think Guantanamo has cost us a lot over the years in terms of our standing in the world and the way in which despots have hidden behind what we have at Guantanamo to justify their own positions," he said.
"I think we ought to remove this incentive that exists in the presence of Guantanamo to encourage people and to give radicals an opportunity to say, 'You see? This is what America is all about. They're all about torture and detention centers.'"
Petraeus on DADT: Not Sure Soldiers Care
General Petraeus was asked about “don’t ask, don’t tell” on Meet the Press and spent the bulk of the time praising the year-long review process which will determine if the ban on gay and lesbian troops serving openly in the military should be lifted.
Petraeus stopped short of saying whether or not he felt “don’t ask, don’t tell should be overturned and said he wasn’t sure how the majority of soldiers felt.
“We have experienced certainly in the FBI and the CIA… I know. I’ve served in combat with individuals who were gay and who were lesbian in combat situations, and frankly, over time, you say, ‘How is his shooting?,’ or, ‘How is her analysis?’”
AND FINALLY, an open letter to Liz Cheney from Spencer Ackerman on TORTURE:
Dear Ms. Cheney,
I don’t know if you saw ‘Meet The Press’ this morning, but a general you may have heard of named David Petraeus — he’s the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East and South Asia and is the most distinguished Army general since Colin Powell — graced your television. He was asked about whether the U.S. ought to torture Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the deputy commander of the Taliban, recently captured in Pakistan. “I have always been on record, in fact since 2003, with the concept of living our values,” Petraeus replied. Every time the U.S. took what he called “expedient measures” around the Geneva Conventions, those deviations just “turned around and bitten us on our backside.” The effect of torture at Abu Ghraib is “non-biodegradable,” he continued, and boasted that as commander of the 101st Airborne in Iraq, he ordered his men to ignore any instruction to use techniques outside the Army Field Manual on Interrogations. Besides, the non-torture techniques that manual has long instructed? “That works,” he said. “That is our experience.”
But hey. You’re a former deputy assistant secretary of state! You obviously know better than the man who implemented the surge in Iraq. Why don’t you enlighten Gen. Petraeus about all the glories of torture? And since you consider “enhanced interrogation” so necessary to secure the country, perhaps there’s a full-page ad you’ll take out in a major newspaper?

ReplyDelete“Hope” and “change” are weasel words bearing no specific meaning, but perfect words for a charismatic who is bent on manipulating the masses.
ReplyDeleteWeasel words? You mean like the nonspecific phrase "It's morning in America?"
Who was more charismatic than "The Great Communicator" ex-movie star? who was known for using his ability to deliver a speech to the masses to get them to swoon over empty rhetoric?
It's only weasley when it's not your charismatic leader in office, isn't it. When it's not some charismatic ex-governor of the smallest in population state who can whip up her adoring mobs into a frenzy of worship while saying absolutely nothing, and doing less.
I would go on, but you have plenty enough to set me straight about already. I won’t go on, because you will run like a roach caught in the light over what I have already written and there is no reason to further waste my time.
shaw, you can delete my co9mment after deleting the roach, Cranky Files, who came here just to hear itself whine bitterly because the American people voted for Obama and not its candidate. Waaah! Waaaah! Waaah!
I thought Gen. Powell and Petraeus were big heroes for a lot of peoples in this country.
ReplyDeleteBoth now support Obama and his policies but i don't hear much about that support.
It looks like Gens. P and P like the Commander in Chief.
'roach caught in a light' ??!!??
ReplyDeletePlease.
More like being stuck on s bus with a very uninteresting, none too bright drunk.
Thank you Friend from SoCal, but we must heed this advice:
ReplyDeleteDON'T FEED THE TROLLS.
I'm leaving you comment up because it is funny, as is Arthurstone's.
But lets keep the comments on the post subject.
Thanks.
'Democrats are weak on national defense'.
ReplyDeleteA myth.
Much like the idea that 'bipartisanship' consists of tossing out you proposals and letting the GOP start construcing a health care bill from the ground up more to their liking
Democrats allow this to happen far too frequently and they need to learn how to fight back with a lot more conviction.
The truth is Democrats aren't weak on defense and the GOP 'position' on healthcare is good news only for their contributors and not their constituents.
And Democrats need stop worrying about the GOP and get on with their agenda.
When Powell announced on Meet the Press that he was going to vote for Obama, the outcry was fast and vicious. This came from the same crowd that had wanted him to run for president. They demeaned his character and his military record, especially in Vietnam. They will do so again, if they watched it.
ReplyDeleteShaw!!!
ReplyDeleteI know this is off topic but...
have you seen this fabulous website???

119 sponsors have realized that his brand of hate isn't what they want to support...

Thanks for the heads-up, Saty.
ReplyDeleteI'll blogroll the site.
Whether or not you want to believe it, Barack Obama is a SOCIALIST.
ReplyDeleteDo you understand that under socialism, you no longer own anything? Please look up the definition of Socialism if you're still unsure of what is being discussed here. I'll be here when you get back.
Socialism is one of the greatest threats against our unique American freedoms that exists. Socialism is only one small step away from communism. Go ask any Russian, Venezuelan, or Cuban immigrants that you can what it's like living under communism. After you've asked them then decide for yourself (we get to do that in a free society) if you want us to step in that direction via socialism. Ask yourself what the world will be like under socialism once the last bastion of individual liberty is gone.
Some people would not recognize socialist, communist, marxist or a left wing radical if they met them on the street...
The schools do not teach the children of the harm such ideas when ensconced into a free market society can cause...
I would rather die on my feet , then serve on my knees...
I am to old to accept the New World according to the definitions of the Leftist in charge....
I like my freedom, I believe in taking responsibility for my actions.
I want to choose what is right for me...
Federal Government has no right in my life their duties are laid out in the Constitution and yet they refuse to do what their duties are, instead they take and they take more and more Power and it is time for the States to cowboy up and say enough!
Any Socialist worth their salt will tell you that Barack Obama's policies are not nearly, by any stretch of the imagination, Socialist.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, leaders of the various Socialist factions here in the US have been interviewed on just this topic and all of them are unanimous in agreeing that there is nothing Socialist about Barack Obama.
Real Socialists (of which I have been since 1985) are much, much further to the left than Barack Obama will ever go.
And perhaps you should do some research on the civilized western world, and note how many nations we consider our allies, on an equal-if-not-superior technological, educational, and standard of living index to ours, have at least a partially Socialist economy.
And you might also want to consider studying up on some American history, to find out how many of the things you enjoy in everyday life (like a safe workplace, weekends, eight hour days and the end of child labour) were brought about in this country due to Socialist activism.
I'm just sayin.
Dark Wolf,
ReplyDeleteWhile you're at it, go talk to the Norwegians, Japanese, Spanish, British, and Canadians.
You've got your talking points all wrong.
You live in a quasi-socialist society, and have ALL YOUR LIFE.
And we haven't, to my knowledge, pledged ourselves to the hammer and sickle.
