"I'm going to be the nominee." --Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich drops out of the race "suspends his campaign."

"Newt Gingrich leaves this presidential race in any number of roles: conservative conscience, eager Romney surrogate, most-wanted congressional campaign guest, or possibly persona non-grata on the 2012 trail. Whatever the case, almost all Republicans agree on one thing: the former House speaker stayed in the race too long, and his unwillingness to give up the fight will make it harder to win back his political prestige. "

He was never going to be the nominee.   And what a good thing that is.  But he and his wife had convinced themselves, and some very gullible people, that his self-promoted awesomeness would would deliver the delegates needed to go on to win the White House .

Self-delusion and hubris are what kept the Gingriches believing in that fantasy.

Now reality and a mountain of debt will sober them up.

His hubris and ambition remind me of some passages from Shakespeare:

Macbeth:

"I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself,
And falls on th'other. . . ."

Julius Caesar

"I am constant as the northern star,
Of whose true-fix'd and resting quality
There is no fellow in the firmament."

There is an hilarious parody of Newt and Callista on the video below:

  1. It's all about the money with Newt. He knew he would never be the nominee. I don't think he ever wanted to be the nominee. He just wants to keep, his name in the news so that he can continue to collect the large "consulting" and "advising" fees. But of course that shouldn't surprise anyone. After all, he is a republican and we all know that they are all about the money...and the monied.

  3. Anon, yes the link is definitely to a quite frightening lawmaker indeed. Like in a totally clueless human.

  4. RN, please don't feed the trolls.

I don't do it when I visit your blog. Thanks.

That troll is the pest, Lisa, who never contributes a jot to any discussion. She hasn't the ability, so she does drive-by trolling.

    Talk about a clueless person.

    1. Sorry Shaw. I guess I just couldn't resist as I really do believe the pol in that video is clueless.

      Again, my appology.

  5. It will be nice to have a president who can lead and does not think he is a rock star. I am not a big Romney supporter but he does have leadership experience and some class. No offense to the Obamites but that skit with Fallon was very classless and shows what Obama is all about. He wants to be a show business personality.

  7. BB Idaho, I guess there be no new "Martian Chronicles" starring Newt Gingrich in the future.

Did you not see the comedy skit Willard Romney participated in on the David Letterman show last December?

Was that comedy skit more dignified because Romney did it?

I'm just trying to understand why people always criticize Obama when he does EXACTLY the same sort of thing a conservative does. I'm truly curious to understand how Romney's participation in a comedy show skit with David Letterman is acceptable while President Obama appearing on Jimmy Fallon's show to promote a policy is considered "classless."

I have a suspicion that people's political dislike of Mr. Obama is what leads them to a knee-jerk reaction.

  9. Shaw,

I cannot disagree with you about disliking Obama's policies but I don't consider this a knee-jerk reaction. I believe Obama is the president and Romney is not and as such it would be nice for Obama to act like he has a clue.

I am not for any presidential candidate acting like a fool but especially POTUS. Obama has total knee-jerk reactions when someone criticizes him and then make an ass of himself on TV.

I would like to see a president who can lead Americans to achieve instead of blaming achievers for their success.

  10. 'I'm just trying to understand why people always criticize Obama when he does EXACTLY the same sort of thing a conservative does.'

Because that's all Obama does. Always looking for applause which is why he alwasy goes to the indoctrinated universities to campaign.

  11. It's not over until the fat gentleman sings -- but that means it's over now.

I disagree that he never had a chance, though. If the Nutty faction of Republicans, the ones for whom Romney is too sane (or too Mormon) had ever united behind one candidate, they could have pulled it off. But, well, they didn't. Maybe Newt can start a second career playing James Bond villains.

The entertaining part of the race is done. Now the scary part begins.

Agreed Infidel! Given the choice of candidates it is once again a choice between "the lesser of two evils."

    That's why I'm voting libertarian...

  13. "That's why I'm voting libertarian..."

Then I don't want to hear you complaining about the winner because the libertarian candidate does not have a chance. You might as well not vote. It has the same effect.

  14. skudrunner: "I cannot disagree with you about disliking Obama's policies but I don't consider this a knee-jerk reaction. I believe Obama is the president and Romney is not..."

Romney is appealing to Americans to vote for him to be the president of the US. He believes he's a better man and politician than Obama. And Romney's doing it by showing up and appearing in skits on teevee comedy shows. Your complaint that Obama is the president and he shouldn't do what Romeny--who trying out for the position--is doing, doesn't make sense.

"...and as such it would be nice for Obama to act like he has a clue."

This is a conservative sour-grapes talking point. Mr. Obama knows exactly what he's doing, and millions and millions and millions of people like it.

"I am not for any presidential candidate acting like a fool but especially POTUS.:

Your claim that Obama is acting like a fool is subjective.

"Obama has total knee-jerk reactions when someone criticizes him and then make an ass of himself on TV."

This is nothing more than an opinion by someone who dislikes the president. It has no weight and proves nothing but your dislike of the man.

There's nothing wrong with appearing on a teevee show. I suspect you and others don't like the wildly enthusiastic audience that greeted him.

"I would like to see a president who can lead Americans to achieve instead of blaming achievers for their success."

Conservative talking points. Give me a link where the President Obama blames achievers for their success. What does that even mean? Think about it.

    "Blame" someone for their success?

"It's your fault you're successful!" Have you ever heard anyone, let alone the president, utter such nonsense?

    To Anonymous:

Students wildly enthusiastic for President Obama = "Indoctrinated universities."

This is a familiar whine from a familiar disgruntled troll who is furious because young people overwhelmingly like Mr. Obama.

Actually, she's furious ANYONE likes Mr. Obama, especially moi!

    LOL!

  15. Anon, when a republican addresses a university crowd, and they cheer for him, as is typical for any president, are they also only going to indoctrinated universities, or is it only President Obama?

Shaw... and here I though Gov. perry had the biggest oops of the campaign... seems Newt might just win that title after all...

  16. I find it interesting that the republicans pick the candidate must like Obama as their candidate. Must be a love-hate relationship.

  17. From The HuffPost:

[Apparently FAUX NOOZ, the hideous Ann Coulter, and other conservative pundits have been criticizing the president about his appearance on Jimmy Fallon's program. What a surprise. ]

"The unbridled willingness on the part of Republicans to toss stones at Obama's appearance on Fallon to announce his support of a policy their candidate is in line with reveals a desperation that is rearing its head surprisingly early given that we're more than six months away from election day."

    Yes, it's desperation and jealousy.

  18. Jerry, the conservatives are going to rally around my former, moderate to liberal Republican governor who supported a woman's right to choose and gun control just a few minutes ago.

    I'm falling over laughing.

    Dave,

As I wrote, Anonymous just gets stamping-her-foot angry any time Mr. Obama gets applause and enthusiam from anyone. I mean, she just can't understand why people don't hate him the way she does!

  19. "The unbridled willingness on the part of Republicans to toss stones at Obama's appearance on Fallon..."

Of course, because they are "fair and balanced", the republicans are going to toss stones at Romney for appearing on Letterman, aren't they?

    LOL

    Of course they are!

Jerry, oh Jerry... The fact I will vote my principles and my conscience gives me the right to complain as frigging much as I chose and about whatever I chose.

    Nice try though Jerry.

I have grown exceedingly tired of voting for the lesser of two evils because the net result has been piss poor and in my view it is about to get worse. Regardless of which major candidate wins the general.

  21. "I am not for any presidential candidate acting like a fool but especially POTUS"

Then you must have been outraged when Bush started goofily peeking under chairs and joked to the press corps about not being able to find any WMD, right?

  22. RN,
Of course you should vote your principles and conscience, and continue to complain. I was just tweaking you a little. And your vote for the libertarian is better than a vote for Romney who I think would be your choice of "the lesser of two evils".

    1. It would Jerry, I'm glad Gary Johnson is staying alive on the libertarian party. He has the potential to put the setup on the map so to speak. If the press gives him reasonable exposure he will have an outside shot.

  23. Kathleen Parker writes Yet Another Stupid Article (YASA®) about how Obama's slow-jamming the news on Jimmy Fallon is good for John McCain. I will remind you that when Bill Clinton played the sax on Arsenio, the world ended as we know it. Clinton, of course, went on to lose the election in 1992—oh, wait. He didn't lose. Never mind. And do note the complaint against Obama isn't that the bit on Fallon didn't work. It's that it did. Note to Parker: when you got nothin', you write nothin'. It's a pundit risk whenever you start a column.
