On This "Black Friday" Evening...
look at this photo and think about its meaning.
Charlie Pierce:
"Somehow, this says a great deal about the state of things in this country, and about the country's ultimate priorities. How you react to it says a great deal about the state of the union, too."
Comments:
William Smith: "I've thought for some time that Wal-Mart is a perfect metaphor for what our economy has become: an instrument that extracts value from its employees, suppliers, trading partners and host communities for the benefit of an already very privileged few. That's how you end up with employees on food stamps, abandoned and decaying town centers and a brand-new art museum in Bumfuck, Arkansas.'
Pat Healy · "Unless that is a: soldier preventing the store from opening on Thanksgiving so that Walmart employees can spend the evening enjoying the company of their families, my reaction is 'Stick a fork in us, we're done.' "
'Charge!' said the Kitchen Aid,
ReplyDelete'Charge for the buns!' they said,
And, 'What's it all for?' not a one of them wondered,
Fueled there by Hess and Shell,
There tired shoppers dwell:
As into the valley of Debt,
Into the Chips of Dell,
Rode the six hundred
What? Is this real or photo shopped?
ReplyDeleteMakes sense to me.
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't there a White Saturday?
ReplyDeletePreparing for a group of protesting strikers?
ReplyDeleteHaL,
ReplyDeleteEvery Saturday Is a white Saturday.
It snows every Saturday?
ReplyDeletePolice officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, me and some Walmart employees are on duty, regardless of whether it's a holiday or not. It's called work.

ReplyDelete.....but only if you wash the socks and underwear. otherwise.......??
I see nothing wrong with it. If there is a direct threat of violent crime against Walmart and its employees, the police need to "protect and serve".
ReplyDeleteAs for William Smith, I find little to agree with. I guess he'd rather have Walmart fire hundreds of thousands of workers who have skills of relatively low value, rather than dare pay them what their jobs are worth (an amount, by the way, which is often higher than the pay at small mom-and-pop stores).
As for the "abandoned and decaying town centers", they have no one to blame but themselves and their own decisions.

Well, as long as these protesters are prevented from harassing the workers and customers, they should be allowed.
