COMMON (Weedy) SEADRAGON:


Common Seadragon, Phyllopteryx taeniolatus (Lacépède, 1804) The species is related to the seahorses. Unlike seahorses however, the seadragons do not have a pouch for rearing the young. Instead, male seadragons carry the eggs fixed to the underside of the tail. The standard name of the species in Australia is 'Common Seadragon', but many people know the fish by the name 'Weedy Seadragon'. 














LEAFY SEADRAGON


Leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) are exquisitely camouflaged fish. Belonging to the same family as seahorses and pipefish (Syngnathidae), they resemble these with their elongated snout and bony-plated body . 

Leafy seadragons are yellowish-brown to green in colour, although they may vary depending on their age, diet or location. 

The pectoral fins are located on the neck, and a dorsal fin runs along the seadragon's back. As their common name suggests, there are a number of leaf-like appendages along the body, which help to make these fish resemble the seaweed of their habitat. The eyes are located above the elongated snout and there are a number of defensive spines along the sides of the body

The contractor signed on workers from a local union and, to meet Trump’s tight deadline, also brought on 200 undocumented laborers from Poland dubbed the "Polish Brigade." 

 The Polish employees were off-the-books, working 12-hour shifts seven days a week for $4 to $5 an hour, with no overtime. Some workers were never paid what they were owed.

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey endorses the guy he said (6 months ago) did not have the temperament or experience to be president.

I guess Trump's experience at shouting, bragging, bullying, snarling, and being an all-around jackass changed Christie's opinion, and now Chris "I didn't know about the bridge" Christie thinks Trump is just perfect for the job:

Trump's way of making America great again...

is to hire foreign workers over American workers, just like he does in his businesses.  
He's a great successful businessman, isn't he? He's successful by hiring foreign workers instead of Americans because it's cheaper! And the businessman can make more money to send off-shore so he doesn't have to pay taxes on it, so the middle class and poor have to make up for it. That's how you make America great again!


His supporters are being duped or dopes or both. He talks about bringing jobs to America, while he practices just the opposite. He wants his dupes to listen to what he says but not look at what he does:

He hires foreign workers over Americans, and he manufactures his clothing lines in China and Mexico! Not here in the good ole U.S. of A.  His supporters don't have a problem with this?

Why?  Either they don't know about it or they do and they don't care -- which is infinitely worse.


After all the "Make America Great Again" talk about kicking out immigrants and bringing back jobs for American workers, it turns out Trump's track record doesn't quite add up. 

The New York Times reports on Trump's hiring practices at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach:

Since 2010, nearly 300 United States residents have applied or been referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers there. But according to federal records, only 17 have been hired. 

In all but a handful of cases, Mar-a-Lago sought to fill the jobs with hundreds of foreign guest workers from Romania and other countries. [...] 

 But he has also pursued more than 500 visas for foreign workers at Mar-a-Lago since 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor, while hundreds of domestic applicants failed to get the same jobs. 

What says Trump about all this? 

 “The only reason they wouldn’t get a callback is that they weren’t qualified, for some reason. There are very few qualified people during the high season in the area.” 

That assertion was roundly rejected by an executive at CareerSource, a Palm Beach-based job placement firm, who responded, “We have hundreds of qualified applicants for jobs like those.” 

Trump eventually got down to the real deal though: 

 “I want to protect our borders,” he said. “I also want to protect our businesses." 

Hey, when it comes to making money, all bets are off. Bad news for all those nativists who think Trump's their knight in shining armor.

Top GOP Pollster: Young Americans Are Terrifyingly Liberal

According to new polling by right-wing political consultant Frank Luntz, Americans 18 to 26 are extremely liberal — so liberal that “the hostility of young Americans to the underpinnings of the American economy and the American government” should “frighten every business and political leader” and “excite activists for Sanders and, to a lesser degree, Clinton activists.” 

Luntz’s poll found that young Americans are optimistic about both the country’s future and their own: 61 percent say the best days of the United States are still ahead of us rather than behind us, and 88 percent are somewhat, very, or extremely optimistic about their economic prospects. But they have concerns, too. 

Their biggest, in order, are “corruption,” “greed,” and “inequality.” 

 President Obama is not their favorite political figure — Bernie Sanders is. Indeed, 31 percent said Bernie Sanders is the major political figure they “like and respect the most” — more than Obama (18 percent) and Hillary Clinton (11 percent). 

Fewer young people like and respect Republican politicians, with just 9 percent choosing Donald Trump, 5 percent George W. Bush, and 5 percent Ted Cruz.

They aren’t nationalistic: 58 percent of respondents said they agreed more with the statement “America isn’t better or worse than most other countries” than with “America is exceptional. It’s better than every other country in the world.” 

In fact, 35 percent of 18- to 26-year-olds, including 42 percent of 18- to 21-year-olds, said they considered themselves more a citizen of the world than of the U.S. 

 In response to the question, “Which type of political system do you think is the most compassionate?”, 58 percent said socialism and 9 percent said communism. Just 33 percent chose capitalism. Sixty-six percent of the poll’s respondents said corporate America “embodies everything that is wrong about America.”

Analysis by the New York Times of a national YouGov/Economist poll combined with a Public Policy Poll of South Carolina primary voters found that a shocking 20% of Trump supporters found that disagreed with the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all the slaves following the end of the American Civil War. 

21% agreed that “whites were a superior race,” 

70% wish the Confederate flag still flew above the statehouse,  

38% of them wish the South had won the Civil War. 

1/3 of Trump backers support banning LGBTQ people from entering the United States; 

41% approve of banning non-citizen Muslims from entering the United States.


These are the bigoted boneheads who believe Trump will make America great again.

R.I.P. Johnny "Shoes" Cammarata

My North End neighborhood mourns the loss of Johnny "Shoes" Cammarata. 

He was a natural comedian and told stories with his unique flourishes about the old days in Boston's Italian neighborhood.  He was Johnny of "Johnny and Gino's" barber shop, but retired a few years ago and enjoyed hanging out at "My Cousin's Place"  (that's Johnny in the center of the photo) where he held court almost every day with his hilarious stories and opinions. 

We'll miss you Johnny. And I'm glad we knew you!

Yes, the Trumper has won two primaries: New Hampshire and South Carolina and he was an also-ran in the Iowa caucuses. (New Hampshire and South Carolina are hardly representative of America's diverse population.)

His supporters believe the Trumper will sail into the White House because of those two wins, or even because of his front-runner status in other Republican primary states.

But the fact is that the Trumper is deeply disliked and has a higher negative rating than Hillary Clinton!

It is the endurance reflected in the above issues, despite Scalia, Thomas and Alito, that has so many TeaPublicans wailing and gnashing their teeth and declaring that America's greatest days are behind us. They see progress in tolerance and in social programs as End Times for America.

Fascinating creatures of the sea.

Salps have a complex lifecycle, with an obligatory alternation of generations. Both portions of the lifecycle exist together in the seas—they look quite different, but both are mostly transparent, tubular, gelatinous animals that are typically between 1 and 10 cm (0.39 and 3.94 in) tall. The solitary life history phase, also known as an oozoid, is a single, barrel-shaped animal that reproduces asexually by producing a chain of tens to hundreds of individuals, which are released from the parent at a small size.

A reminder to all who value science and the scientific method.  The late Justice Scalia, who sat on the most powerful court in America, believed that creation myths were as scientifically credible as settled Evolutionary science.  This is a direct quote from Scalia's dissenting opinion in Edwards vs. Aguillard:


"The body of scientific evidence supporting creation science is as strong as that supporting evolution. In fact, it may be stronger…. The evidence for evolution is far less compelling than we have been led to believe. Evolution is not a scientific “fact,” since it cannot actually be observed in a laboratory. And we wonder why we lag behind other technologically developed countries in science and math scores?  When you have a man sitting on the country's highest court writing nonsensical rubbish as Scalia did in that decision, it's not surprising.  None of what Scalia wrote in that absurd statement is remotely factual.

With Ted Cruz surging in Iowa and some national polls, GOP frontrunner Donald Trump took a jab at the Texas Senator's faith, saying, "not a lot of Evangelicals come out of Cuba."  Which implies that Cruz, who heritage is Cuban, couldn't possibly be a "real" Evangelical, because, Cuba!


Questioning President Obama's Christian faith:

 "He doesn't have a birth certificate. He may have one, but there's something on that, maybe religion, maybe it says he is a Muslim," Trump told Fox News in 2011. "I don't know. Maybe he doesn't want that."

This is the judge the conservatives admire.

Anyone can see the appearance of a conflict of interest is very, very apparent here; but because he was a Supreme, we're supposed to believe that doesn't exist.

Notice that Hewitt mentioned abortion, guns, marriage and immigration when talking about the activity of the Supreme Court. If you add it voting rights and affirmative action, you pretty much have a summary of the cultural changes that are a threat to the Confederate world view...

The essence of the Confederate worldview is that the democratic process cannot legitimately change the established social order, and so all forms of legal and illegal resistance are justified when it tries… The Confederate sees a divinely ordained way things are supposed to be, and defends it at all costs. No process, no matter how orderly or democratic, can justify fundamental change. 

That "divinely ordained way things are supposed to be" includes white supremacy, control of women's reproductive choices, marriage between one man and one woman, and the elevation of gun rights over every other constitutional right. 

 But America is changing. And all of those things are threatened. That is what has conservatives so terrified and angry...to the point that people like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz now lead the fight for the next Republican presidential nomination.

Mitch McConnell, for example, adamantly stated that President Obama should not fulfill his constitutional duties as President Reagan did in the last year of his presidency.  I wonder what the difference is...

Senator Rand Paul says it would be a conflict of interests if President Obama fulfilled his constitutional duties by nominating a Supreme.

Uh. No.

In a Washington Post op-ed (pitiably titled "For the good of the country, stop your nakedly partisan obstruction), Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid protests that "Republicans should not insult the American people’s intelligence by pretending there is historical precedent for what they are about to do. There is not." Of course there isn't. As constitutional historian Timothy Huebner observes in an inevitably concurring NY Times op-ed, "in cases when [Supreme Court] vacancies have arisen during election years, the weight of history is clearly on the side of the president naming a successor and the Senate acting on that nomination." 




Mitch McConnell Voted To Confirm A Supreme Court Justice In Reagan's Final Year 

So did every single Republican senator.


On Feb. 3, 1988, McConnell and literally every other GOP senator voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. This was during President Ronald Reagan's last year in the White House, and at a time when Democrats controlled the Senate. Kennedy was confirmed 97-0, with three Democrats -- Joe Biden, Al Gore and Paul Simon -- not voting at all because, presumably, they were busy running for president that year.

All the bellowing by the T-GOP warning the POTUS that he should not even THINK of nominating a candidate to fill Scalia's spot is just more of the same obstruction and sabotaging that they've practiced since January 20, 2009. This is just one more disgusting example of their contempt for this president whom the American people voted for twice with the largest popular vote since President Eisenhower.

The American people's choice was to have Barack Hussein Obama as their president for a second term, which term would include the nomination of a Supreme Court justice, should one of the sitting justices die.

That just happened.

Scalia is dead, and now President Obama must fulfill his constitutional duties by nominating a replacement. What the T-GOP has been saying is b.s., and everyone knows it. President Reagan proposed Justice Kennedy for the SCOTUS in the last year of his presidency, and he was confirmed.

The T-GOP are no better than a gang of petulant toddlers who scream bloody NO! every time President Obama exercises his presidential rights.

As for Justice Scalia, I never admired him nor his jurisprudence. Ever.

Every day, during this circus that's called the TeaPublican presidential nomination process, we hear something that would cause any sane person to want to guzzle antifreeze.  Every day.  And today is no exception  -- BUT this something is so depressingly awful that I had to read it several times to believe a candidate for the TeaPublican nomination actually said it.

Donald Trump, the candidate currently leading all the polls for the TeaPublican Party has actually jumped on the conspiracy wagon and is buying into the suspicion that President Obama had Antonin Scalia killed!  He's considering a wild-ass, witheringly imbecilic delirium as a reality.

There's not much more one can say about a political party or a politician who would descend into utter madness of this sort.  But there it is. Trump and the lunatics on the right.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump fared particularly well with the high school graduates or less crowd whereas Governor Kasich (R-OH) did well with the post grads, according to exit polling.

Ohio Governor John Kasich takes second, Cruz third.

Here's how the TeaPublicans Are Stopping People From Voting

This is a true account from a friend of a friend in North Carolina:



What's on my mind: today, my mother-in-law showed up at the NC DMV to get a photo ID card. She had a Social Security card. She had her birth certificate. She had her NH drivers license. All documents cited as needed as proof of identification. According to the state board of elections, only two of these documents are needed. 

 Her son, my husband, drove her; she no longer drives. Drove her, so she can get her photo ID, so she can VOTE. (Here they are, holding her voter registration application.) 

She was DENIED. 

 DENIED on the grounds that she did not have a MARRIAGE LICENSE showing proof of her change of middle name. 

She didn't have "PROOF" that she changed her MIDDLE NAME when she got MARRIED. ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME. 

 NC brothers and sisters: GET BUSY GETTING READY TO VOTE. Do NOT put it off. BECAUSE: our state may not make it easy for you to exercise one of your most fundamental civil rights. 

If you're not sure about your registration status, get sure. If you don't have a current photo id, get one. If you know somebody who may not be ready, like your sweet old mother in law, or a neighbor: ask them. Help them. I'll keep you posted about how my complaint to the state goes. 



And there you have it nation. The TeaPublicans of North Carolina stopping sweet little ole ladies from voting because she didn't have proof of changing HER MIDDLE NAME WHEN SHE GOT MARRIED. This is how the Jim Crow laws stopped African-Americans from voting by a thousand little cuts : By requiring that they own property, by using literacy tests or testing if they could count or anything else the weasels could come up with to deny Americans from voting. 

And in the 21st century they're still at it.

This is your modern TeaPublican Party, trying to keep honest Americans from voting because they may vote for the Democratic Party.

When you can't dazzle your adoring supporters with any depth of knowledge of the issues, you can do what Donald Trump does so well:  He tells everyone how rich and great he is, or he uses the language of a sexually frustrated teenage boy to attack his opponents. 

When you can't come up with a reason for breaking international and U.S. law by bringing back waterboarding, you can attack your opponent by calling him a pussy. 

Classy, innit? 

If you're 12 years old and trying to impress a roomful of 10 year olds who'll howl approval at every vulgarity you can throw at them, you descend into crudeness and coarseness to keep them stomping their little hooves and hooting like hyenas at you and your perversity. IOW, you're just Donald the Creep being even creepier and more disgusting than you've ever been by dragging yourself and your supporters through slime and sewage.

And they eat it up and love him for it.

Trump Shocks in Final New Hampshire Rally

MANCHESTER, N.H. — There are some things you never think you'll hear a presidential candidate say — even Donald Trump.

 But, on Monday night, Trump became the first presidential candidate in recent memory to use an epithet for female anatomy to describe a Republican rival on stage at a rally — and he later said it was a "great moment."

 Speaking to about 5,000 people at Manchester's Verizon Center on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, Trump railed against opponents who speak out against his tone. Specifically on waterboarding, Trump contrasted his recent statements on bringing back waterboarding to those of Sen. Ted Cruz.

 "You know he's concerned about the answer because well, some people," Trump said, pointing to a woman in the crowd, "she just said a terrible thing. You know what she said? Shout it out 'cause I don't wanna." Then he said it anyway: "She said, 'He's a p---y.'"
