55 YEARS AGO TODAY

The Boston Bruins beat the St. Louis Blues in the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals, with Bobby Orr scoring the winning goal in Game 4.

The goal was scored in overtime, and the Bruins won the series 4-0. Orr's famous "flying" goal, where he leaped into the air after scoring, has become an iconic image in hockey history.

Bobby Orr's iconic goal!

  1. That is inspiring. I understand about teamwork, when everyone is contributing, it all comes together... I never played sports but I played cello back in the day before my fingers stopped fingering. There was a piece we played, dead level difficult, we all were playing our best and when the last note sounded there was silence before the audience jumped to their feet and started clapping like they were never going to stop.

As a whole we had to keep composure - orchestra and all - but back in the green room!!! Whooeee! Glad we didn't have champagne because instruments be damned, we would have been spraying it everywhere (cello varnish and alcohol did not agree, just saying).

That's the feeling the video brought out in me. Thank you so much. Had totally forgotten that moment.

  2. When the realization arises in one that they are not seperate from the whole of humanity and reality, that the existance of an independent seperate substantial "self" is an illusion, and that dualistic thinking is one component of suffering we will see a lot more teamwork everywhere.

Realizing all humans are essentially the same, and are dealing with samsara and its deluded beliefs, perception, desires, and aversions should make it clear we're all in this relative existence together and should therefore work together to achieve all that is possible for the benefit of all beings.

Hockey, as all sports, can teach us a bit about the importance of teamwork and the whole.

  3. Thanks for the memories, Shaw. I was playing H.S. hockey in Minnesota around that time. I was a defenceman and Bobby Orr was my hockey hero. An offensive defenceman. What I remember most about him is, he was beautiful effortless skater. Something I tried to emulate but couldn't quite pull off.

A little brag, our team played in 2 MN state tournaments. We didn't win the big one but did finish 3rd my junior year and 5th senior year out of 8 teams. It was hard work to get there and a thrill to play on the big stage.

I have lifelong friends from that team and still play golf every Monday with a couple. As Les and Grey alluded to, there is something almost transcendent in accomplishing a thing as a team.

    1. Nice memory, Craig. Both my late husband and my son played hockey. My late husband was the only physics major at MIT on their hockey team. We were Bobby Orr fans, and I saw him make a hat trick as a defenseman at the Boston Garden! A memory for a lifetime!
