NOTHING MAKES SENSE

Two children dead,  and17 hurt after a gunman opened fire at Minneapolis church during Mass; shooter is dead.

A total of 19 people were wounded in the shooting — all but three were children. Two children, ages 8 and 10, have died, according to Minneapolis police, and two other children are in critical condition.

Hennepin Healthcare says it is treating 10 patients — all but two being kids between the ages of 6 and 14. Seven of them were brought in as “critical patients” and four required the operating room. Children’s Minnesota confirmed it is treating six children injured in the shooting.

The shooter was dressed in all black and armed with a rifle when he fired at Annunciation Catholic Church just before 8:30 a.m. Minneapolis police say he had a rifle, shotgun and pistol, which he used to fire from the outside of the church through windows.

Police say the shooter, 23-year old Robert Westman, is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was in his early 20s and didn’t have an extensive criminal history.

It happened during an 8:15 a.m. Mass that marked the first week of school at next-door Annunciation Catholic School.

"Norris Roberts said that his 12-year-old stepgrandson, who was injured in his stomach in the attack, was out of surgery and is no longer in critical condition. Mr. Roberts said he was worried about the long-term mental health impact this will have on the boy, who saw a girl get shot in the head. “It’s horrific for him to go through that, and it’s going to be a lifelong problem for him,” he said. “I can’t fathom that happened and you being stable. It’s not normal.”

People offered their thoughts and prayers for the dead and injured children and adults.

“Children are dead, there are families that have a deceased child. You cannot put into words the gravity, tragedy or absolute pain of the situation,” Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis said in a news conference on the shooting outside Annunciation Catholic School.

“Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now, these kids were literally praying,” he added. “It was the first week of school, they were in a church.”

  1. We will soon know what our "mourner in chief" has to say, along with all the rest of our elected "leaders".

Will some politically criticize others for a political response? Of course.

Will some call for more gun control laws? Of course.

Will some say there is nothing we can do? Of course.

Will some call for thoughts and prayer? Of course.

Will some call for more mental health options without a way to fund that "solution"? Of course.

Will some say we need to enforce the laws we already have? Of course.

Will anything change as a result of another mass shooting, the kind some people claim never happen in the USA and are just hoaxes by trained LARPs? No, nothing will change.

Because we are no longer a serious people determined to find solutions to difficult issues. Rather, we prefer to yell past each other, eschewing the hard work of coming together and overcoming differences, for the common good of a pluralistic, diverse group of United States of America.

  3. BB... I lament the loss of the Howard Baker's, Tip O'Neill, Dan Rostenkowski, Dan Moynihan, Barry Goldwater, Mark Hatfield, John McCain and others, partisan leaders to be sure, but serious people. Folks who would tell their presidents to stuff it if what they wanted to do was stupid or not good for America.

All of these guys worked with members of the other party to do good, seldom perfect, but good, for America.

    Now?

Like it was all, as you said, normal.

"We're going to have a conversation of freedom versus protecting children. How many school shootings doesn't take before we're going to have a conversation about keeping firearms out of -- it's always a young white male. Almost always."

Literally he said the quiet part out loud.

Finally a Republican said something. Why on earth did it take so long?

    Good on you Trey Gowdy!

    1. How many times have I posted here the fact that firearms are the leading cause of death for American children? We have an idiot (RFK,Jr.) leading HHS, who is disregarding scientists and the scientific method so that he can promote his crackpot ideas instead of addressing the leading cause of deaths for American children.

Kennedy has zero expertise in vaccines, nutrition, or anything else HHS is involved in, yet he's been put in charge of an organization that affects the health of every American. This is beyond nuts; it's a recipe for self-destruction -- brought to you by a pathological lying malignant narcissist and his ignorant followers.

Speaking of Trump's ignorant followers, this was posted at the Mother Ship today, and is a perfect insight into the rot that has taken hold of 35*% (more or less -- that's all it is) of the voting public:

      Sam Huntington says:
      August 28, 2025 at 5:54 am
No, the leftist negativity doesn’t get to me. I’ve come to expect it from the “political opposition.” What does bother me, though, is the amount of bashing you [GEEEZ] do on Trump. It is as if you somehow needed the adoring approval of your communist buddy, BB. But don’t worry; I’m getting to the point of expecting that sort of thing here at Geez as well."

And there you have it. A perfect example of the rotted-out brains of the sort of people who continue to support the convicted felon, adjudicated sexual assaulter, serial adulterer, cheat, fraudster, and pathological lying malignant narcissist.

Anyone who dares to criticize Der Führer is called out as a "Commie!" Even the bona fide, certified Trump arse-kisser who runs a blog but occasionally deigns to admit Trump effs up on some things.

BB-Idaho comments here. To call him a "commie" is not just laughable, but it shows the mental deterioration Trumpism causes in otherwise normal people's brains. Yet, here we are, reading what one would otherwise assume is a normal American, but this "Sam Huntington" IS NOT! He's been captured by lies, deceit, propaganda, and most important -- FEAR! And The Party has triumphed:

"The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power".

"Power is not a means; it is an end. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power".

      Am I angry? Yup.

Seeing more children slaughtered in a church while praying to their god kinda put me in a foul mood, -- that and being sick for a week with a rotten cold, and then reading this weak-minded and thoroughly confused and witless MAGA, "Sam Huntington", call our friend, BB-Idaho, a Commie. That put me over the edge.

  12. How many of appointments by any president have experience in what they are appointed to lead. Did mayor pete have any experience in transportation or did he check a box. Does noem know anything about national security or is she just a model for a make up poster. We don't require expertise we just need to click a box.

The shooting tragedy is easy to explain for some because it had to be the gun. He purchased the firearm legally so requiring registration would not be an answer. Blaming the gun for shooting is like blaming the plane crash in DC on the aircraft. Why is it that there were not that many of these tragedies prior to the popularity of social media. Maybe we should ban social media or maybe we should blame it on our hateful political system.

    1. Oh FFS! Every civilized country on this planet has mentally ill people, trans people, gay people, angry people, misguided people, every kind of disturbed and unhappy people, but what those countries have taken control of is unfettered availability to weapons of war and other firearms. America doesn't believe in that, so we will continue to see children, and adults, being slaughtered in churches, temples, mosques, malls, schools, nightclubs, theaters, concerts, etc., because we don't care enough about our own children to find a way to stop the carnage.

And NO! Social media doesn't kill children in churches, temples, and mosques. Guns kill children in churches, temples, and mosques.

We know we can stop this; we also know America (our cowardly politicians) don't want to stop this.

    2. There were signs the shooter had been radicalized. The shooters parents gave the heads up. Social media posts were flagged. And nothing happened because all the folks who previously were listening for exactly this type of horrific event were let go, sacked, all in the name of "efficiency".

It's the guns, it's always been the guns and while 80% (might be higher now) of the American population favor some sort of gun reform our feckless leaders do nothing, say nothing as their corporate sponsors demand.

He didn't mention a model of disease involving the four humors or the curative powers of bear gallbladder bile, or the therapeutic use of insulin shock for depression. I repeat that a sine qua non of the diagnosis of psychosis is a defect in reality testing. He's either wildly mistaken or a liar. In either case, he's about as qualified to lead HHS as a flat-earther would be to plot orbits for NASA."

  14. Skud... let's not argue about Mayor Pete and Noem.

    Let's focus on RFK...

President Trump made one of the most important accomplishments in American history happen, the Covid Vaccine of 2020 and 2021.

Remember the tears steaming down the faces of ppl in March of 2021 after being vaccinated? Remember government working to reopen businesses and the economy after the 2020 shut down?

That happened because the Trump Admin worked their asses off for the American people. All of the American people. And developed the mRNA vaccines, that have saved millions of lives.

    That's all a fact.

In fact, President Trump brought it up, on tape, in this week's cabinet meeting. He spoke about what a miracle it was/is. And then he said this, looking at RFK...

I guess, and I'm paraphrasing here, you might have a problem with that.

    You think?

Trump hired a person who has said there are no safe vaccines in America to head a health agency. Now the CDC is moving to ban access to all vaccines!

Anyone who cannot see this, is willfully blind to an uncomfortable reality.

President Trump and his admin saved millions of American lives by pushing development of the Covid vaccine. It's just a fact!

But he can't say that because his supporters, idiots really as it relates to this, do not believe it. In spite of all the evidence.

The influence of Mayor Pete and Sec Noem has nothing to do with RFK. Nor does sleepy joe. Nor does... well you get the point.

RFK is a nut and as it relates to vaccine, a danger to the health and welfare of each and every American.

And millions of people like you turn a blind eye to that reality everyday so as to avoid the fact that while President Trump did make the Covid vaccine happen in record speed, even Warp Speed as he used to say, citing this fact angers his base.

    1. Put another way, Trump put an anti-science, conspiracy- driven nutcase in charge of America’s health. Why would he do that? Maybe two reasons:

      1) Trump won’t listen to science experts who know more than he and Kennedy do; or
      2) Both Kennedy and Trump suffer from the Duning-Kruger effect:
A cognitive bias where people with low ability or competence in a given area overestimate their own skill or knowledge, while highly competent individuals tend to underestimate theirs. This is because a lack of knowledge prevents people from recognizing their own shortcomings and the complexity of the subject matter.

Either way, both Trump and Kennedy have put the American people in danger.

When a country elects a stupid man, expect stupid appointments and decisions from him. And that's what we got.

    2. Let's make this simple for skud, -FJ and Joe...

That Trump cannot cite the success in developing the Covid vaccine by his CDC and government, is a fact.

Just answer us this... why is that reality, that fact, that truth, so toxic that even the mention of it by Trump brings scorn from his base?

      I really don't get it.

  16. I want to clear up something. Trump had NOTHING to do with the development of the Covid vaccine.

All Trump did was remove bureaucratic red tape and process hurdles for the Covid vax to be distributed in the US, what ANY president would have done.

If we want to be grateful to anyone, these are the ones:

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID 19.

The Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, sold under the brand name Comirnaty, is an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine developed by the German biotechnology company BioNTech. For its development, BioNTech collaborated with the American company Pfizer to carry out clinical trials, logistics, and manufacturing.

    1. skud: "He doesn't believe in over burdensome regulations and he took them away so we had a vaccine in record time..."

      Not true.

The accelerated timeline for the initial COVID-19 vaccines was primarily due to the elimination of financial and logistical bottlenecks, not the removal of safety regulations. The Trump administration's Operation Warp Speed was instrumental in this process by providing billions in funding and coordinating with pharmaceutical companies. This allowed vaccine developers to proceed with multiple steps at once, a strategy that would have been financially too risky under normal circumstances."

Joe Biden, BTW, got the vaccines into Americans' arms. The Trump administration had no program set up to get the vaccine to the American people. The Biden admin. got that program up and going in warp speed time. So your swipe at Mr. Biden is just partisan hackery. Without getting the vaccines into arms, the money spent to get it in the first place would have been useless.

On covid: The Obama Administration established the Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense at the National Security Council (NSC) to lead the federal government’s pandemic response (the Directorate was disbanded by the Trump Administration in 2018).
"GRRR. Those DAMN Democrats", says Skud.

He KNOWS Biden would have done NOTHING to address covid. (But Skud still cashed his stimulus check from Biden.)

It's SO easy to spew such simplistic drivel. Thanks for the lesson, Skud!

Trump's covid statements: "We have it totally under control. Just take hydroxychloroquine!" (He DIDN'T when HE was sick.)

Biden called for adopting measures that go beyond what have been passed by Congress. Biden would reopen enrollment for marketplace plans and cover COBRA at 100% for those who lose their jobs and health insurance due to COVID-19. In addition, VP Biden would further expand paid leave for sick workers and those caring for family members, among others, due to COVID-19, and provide additional pay for frontline/essential workers. On vaccine pricing, he would authorize the federal government to approve the price of any COVID-19 vaccine developed with federal resources, in contrast to the Trump Administration, which has said it does not want to pursue price controls.

    3. skud: "The independents are the ones who matter in the polls because we are the deciding factor and are very conflicted."

Not conflicted, they've dropped support for Trump by 17 points. His support by Independents is at 29%. That's not "conflicted;" that's a running away from him because they see him for the danger to America that he is. Of course, there will always be some who are attracted to authoritarianism and people like Trump who revel in ignoring our Constitution and our democratic norms.

You may think Trump is "getting things done," but it is an illusion. His regime is not deporting the undocumented in the numbers he promised, so his people in charge have no problem breaking the law to fill the quotas.

Maybe you don't care for democratic norms and our Constitution (which, by your admiration for Homan, it appears you don't), but a majority of the American people still do. In March 2025, Tom Homan" said, "I don't care what the judges think." If you admire him for his lawlessness, keep this in mind:

Trump and his authoritarian government will not be in power forever, but his assault on our democratic norms and Constitution (and what he got away with) will be remembered by whomever comes to power next. And when or if that party comes after the 2nd Amendment, or any other freedom the Trumpers hold near and dear, let me know how you'll feel about the enforcer saying "I don't care what the judges think," when they try to apply the law to what that enforcer is doing.

You like what Homan is doing, eh? He's breaking the law. Grabbing PERSONS off the streets and deporting them without due process is unConstitutional. So if another administration does unConstitutional actions in service to its leader, you will have nothing to complain about. Right?

skud: "We like many of the things trump is doing we just don't like the way he does it." May I remind you, skud, that "the way he does it" and "the things trump is doing" ARE ONE AND THE SAME. You can't separate the tyrant from what the tyrant is doing. It's like saying "I like the way Trump is burning down our democracy; I just don't like the blowtorch he's using to do it."

  22. Is anyone worried about what's going on at the CDC now that Sen Cassidy of Louisiana, a real, you know, medical doctor, has sounded the alarm about RFK's leadership and vaccines?

Right now I cannot, as a person whom works at and oversees medical clinics for indigenous people in Mexico, even get a Covid vaccine booster. RFK has taken direct aim at specifically the mRNA process to discover and make vaccines.

Now I know there are some vaccine skeptics here, but setting the Covid-19 vaccines for the sake of clarity, let's look at what else the CDC scientists use the mRNA technology to treat. It's wrapped up in one word...

    Cancer.

That's right, cancer. The worry of many young and old. CDC scientists and others are on the cusp of targeted cancer treatments, by person and his or her specific type of cancer, through the use on mRNA technology.

That research, by way of RFK's policies, supported by President Trump, is now ending, despite the great majority of medical advice.

As the departed CDC scientists, doctors and researchers have put it, this decision will cost American lives.

For all you MAGA folks, ask yourself this... and without an answer, expect no response from me, if an entire department of scientists had walked out en masse during the pre Trump Obama admin and said the admin's actions would cost America lives, what would you have thought, posted on a blog about Obama, or believed about his admin?

I do agree with him that vaccines should be voluntary and the strong arm tactics of the previous administration were uncalled for but to not fund research is crazy. If you believe the CDC is on the cusp of targeted cancer treatment don't invest your money in it. There has been targeted treatment for certain cancers for years.

    1. David, You seem to be confused or has just taken up the mantra I cannot think because I hate trump. I said they need to have experience even goofs from the other party. Guess you missed the part that I was talking about the goof being RFK, Jr and he did arrive from the other party. Was he selected because he knew what he was doing, no, he was selected because he bailed from the dems "other party" to support trump and his position was a payment for that defection.
Even though I think neither party represents the American people the dems are so screwed up they don't even represent themselves. Your I hate trump mentality is taking it's toll because you use to be a rational person with a level head and I'm sure you will return in three years or so.

    2. "Your I hate trump mentality is taking it's toll because you use to be a rational person..."

If one is NOT against the Trump Regime at this point, then, IMO, one is clearly NOT rational.

IOW, the RATIONAL position is to be against what Trump is doing.

In case you haven't noticed, skud, the courts have caught up with the convicted felon, Trump: A federal appeals court ruled most of Trump's tariffs, imposed under emergency powers, to be illegal; courts are reviewing Trump's deportation abuses.

    3. Follow closely skud, because this will tough for you... If I misconstrued your words, I apologize. I sincerely believed when you, as a MAGA conservative said this words...

"We really need to have a law that only people with experience can be considered for cabinet posts even if they are goofs from the other party."

...that you were saying people from the "other party" are goofs.

BTW... no hate at all towards President Trump. Anger? Sure. Dismay? You bet. But hate? Nah...

  25. In case I wasn't clear on the potential of mRNA use for cancer cures, we are on the cusp of being able to target certain cancers based on the genealogy, genes and make up individuals with cancer.

This is different from anything currently in the market place.

If only we can keep working at it with full funding.

  26. mNRA research cutting edge for sure. With the brain wormed, roadkill eating
weirdo in charge at HHS, the progress with be made by overseas labs and have a huuuuge tariff on it.

  27. Maybe after the tRump/RFK duo and when MAGA becomes less influential. Might be a very long wait. Once the levers of government are firmly fascist and the media is fully controlled by the FOTUS and his party of suppression it will not happen quickly.

  29. Whatever gains the US made on the medical front have been tossed into the trash by those implementing the Project 2025 punch list. I'm saddened to have to say this but research can't be stopped and started on a whim. Experiments have to have continuity otherwise how else to determine you've achieved your goal?

The number of social media posts I've ingested since the horrific shooting... so many voices, so many faces torn by grief and anger. Grief that the kids acted more humanely than most adults. Anger that those who had the power to change things for the better did not, and did not for the worst reason on the planet - money. And the crap spewed by the MAGAverse, delighted the shooter had Transgender somewhere in their lexicon of labels, ignoring the Nazi rhetoric they posted all the freaking time. Kid had more in common with Nazis than they did with the LGBTQIA+ community, in fact they hated who they were.

If only mental health was accessible for anyone and everyone who needed it.

skud tells me all the time that the Democrats don't stand for anything. I guess I'm not a Democratic Party member then because I stand (and sit because standing is not an option here/now) a lot of stuff.

I am for nation wide gun reform, for funding lunches and breakfasts for kids. I stand for employers paying those who work for them a living wage (living wage means housing, clothes, foods, child care, and transportation are all covered by the earners paycheck). I supported Universal Health Care before the ACA was a pipe dream in Gov. Romney's tiny little brain.

I also stand for helping those who are guilty of hoarding, specifically the wealthy few who have more money than they or their companies can spend in a hundred lifetimes. The only entity which legitimately needs billions of dollars are countries in order to take care of their population, but no single person needs that much wealth.

I'll go one step further. When talking about how humanity could get here I've read all the comments and all the ideas, some better than others. But what is missing is the context. Hoarding wealth robs the economy performing as it's designed to perform. And I will say that watching the behaviors of the very very wealthy lets me know all that money isn't exactly healthy for them.

No, I'm not jealous, I'm worried as I worry for all humans suffering from debilitating illness. And wealth hoarding is the mother of all illnesses. I hope those wealthy folks suffering are relieved of their burdens.

That's how I believe we got to here/now. It's not what is in our hearts because humans across the globe have hearts. It was us, giving sick wealthy humans unfettered access to our politicians which led to a relaxing of necessary regulations which led to the business person to Congress to Lobbyist closed loop, which then morphed into the death spiral WeThePeople are living through now.
