  1. Singin' out the Dog Days... The term "dog days of summer" refers to the hot and humid period of summer that usually lasts from July 3 to August 11. It's named after the star Sirius, which is part of the constellation Canis Major, or "Greater Dog". During the summer in the Northern Hemisphere, Sirius rises in the morning and moves behind the sun for most of July and into early August. The Greeks believed that Sirius and the sun shining together contributed to the extreme heat of late summer.
