SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC

This song has been going through my mind since last week:

  1. One of my faves. My son did Les Mis 2x as Jean Valjean. It contains the highest note of all Valjean's pieces.

    1. He started as a musical theatre major at Syracuse, but switched to Social Work. Today he's a 5G tech for Verizon, and his husband works for Target as a stock worker. He no longer performs. Syracuse "broke" him from the theatre.

    2. Sorry to hear that. We need more beautiful voices, not fewer.

    3. Amen. He was a lyrical baritone, on his way to tenor. He trained in "Voice" at Peabody Prep in Baltimore City (next to the George Washington monument), just down the block from his high school, The Baltimore School for the Arts on Cathedral He even went to "Opera Camp" at Catholic University in DC one summer and performed a Cav & Pag with the Washington Opera. He also performed at the Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage.... all before graduating high school.

    4. My older sister trained at Berkeley School of Music. She was a coloratura soprano.

    5. Did your son sing the part of Turridu’ in Cavalaria Rusticana? I listen to that opera every Easter, a tradition, instead of Parsifal, another traditional Easter opera, by Wagner. Or Canio, in Pagliacci ?

    6. No, he had a minor background role and sang no parts (they were performed by Washington opera members). It was an "Opera Camp" after all. They did perform some vocal training songs (lieders) in the Benjamin Rome School of Music Chapel, and a few more "operaetic" songs in the rehearsal halls (ie- Papigeno) from The Magic Flute (not him).

    7. Berklee...nice. My son considered attending a Conservatory, but he was more into the acting. He received a Pre-Conservatory Certificate (Vocal) from Peabody Prep. They would have made a great pair for Papagena/ Papageno. ;)

  3. Inspirational from the mid 19th century problems. Good for son of Thersites, whatever his political stripes. Inspirational music 'trumps' petty politics.
