Putin Backs Down by Infidel753

Blogger Infidel753, who actually knows what he's talking about when it comes to the Russian/Ukraine conflict, has posted this over at his blog:

"The conflict in eastern Ukraine isn't over yet, but we already know who one of the victors is: President Obama.

As Thomas Friedman observed this week in a widely-cited column, Putin has backed down. He has withdrawn Russian forces from the Ukrainian border and back to their bases. He declared last week that he would recognize the outcome of Ukraine's election on Sunday, though even then it was expected that the nationalist Poroshenko would win (and he did). Even as the Ukrainian government brought the full weight of its military into action to smash the "pro-Russian separatists" (actually Russian agents), killing dozens of them in the battle to recapture Donetsk airport alone, and Poroshenko declared that there will be no negotiation with "bandits", Putin has done nothing. He may manage to hold Crimea, but his effort to subvert and seize the rich industrial regions of eastern Ukraine seems to have been abandoned.

The only plausible explanation for this dramatic change in policy is the effectiveness of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the US and its allies. Powerful Russian oligarchs have felt serious threats to their personal wealth, while the Russian stock market and the value of the ruble have been battered. Beyond that, Europe has taken steps to reduce its dependence on Russian fossil fuels, undermining not only Putin's main economic counter-weapon against the West, but also a formerly-reliable source of revenue. Much publicity has attended Russia's recent gas deal with China, a substitute market -- but the prices agreed will mean a distinctly sub-par profit. Putin was wise to conclude that pursuing the seizure of eastern Ukraine was not worth the economic costs the West had shown itself able to exact.

It can't be coincidence, either, that just this week Obama delivered a much-commented speech at West Point declaring that, while the US must continue to lead the world and defend human rights and Western values, military force will play a smaller role in that leadership than it has done in the past, with "soft power" coming to the fore. The speech drew the expected attacks from Republicans who believe any American response to an international challenge is a failure unless it involves bombing the crap out of something -- but if American and European economic pressure can make a nation as mighty as Russia abandon military aggression, then the day of "soft power" has truly arrived."

Below is a list, with links and comments, of rightwingers on the Ukraine situation and their noninsightful opinions on how President Obama handled the situation.  They all condemn Mr. Obama's reaction as weak, pathetic, or ineffective.  But as we now know, those bloggers didn't know what they were blathering about.   All they knew was that President Obama, along with NATO allies, issued sanctions, and that was enough for them to tell each other that those sanctions would be ineffectual and accomplish nothing, all the while supporting the ex-KGB Communist against our own president.

They weren't the only stooges doing this.  All of the conservative punditocracy and politicians chimed in with their withering condemnations of President Obama for not marching into the Crimea and shooting Putin in his nads to show the world what defenders of democracy America is.

President Obama has been vindicated and proved to be the measured, temperate and correct leader who was not willing to drag this country into a war with Russia.

Here are the people who mocked this prudent and, in the end, best outcome for America's interests:

GONE IN 60 SECONDS

The Personification of Ineptitude

Cry Havoc! and let slip the dogs of war

The Steak Knife and the Cupcake

Crimea River

Here are some of their wrong predictions and assertions.  President Obama, in the end, has proved them to be naive, unwise, and lacking understanding in complicated foreign policy problems -- know-nothings with opinions.

Oh Boy, Obama just announced sanctions against Russia! I bet that they are shaking in their boots.

Another slap on the Bear's wrist.

The larger point in all of this is the complete collapse of a coherent US foreign policy.

Why isn't anyone calling for Mr. Heinz Kerry to resign?

Our intelligence apparatus is too focused on spying on Americans and chasing goat herders, and our diplomatic corps is incompetent, almost criminally so.

We are off the rails. George Bush wielded a big stick and bellowed at the top of his lungs and didn't give a damn what other countries thought.

Barack Obama threw the big stick in the wood chipper and whispered sweet nothings into the world's ear.

Can we get some balance here? Is it too much to ask for some adult leadership and basic competence in our government?

HERE'S THE DEAL AS I SEE IT:

Could the WHITE HOUSE have said nothing throughout this Ukraine/Crimea situation?

I think not

Could the WHITE HOUSE have not threatened?

yes...it's the finger-wagging threats that have us looking weak right now

US Child Gun Deaths Rose 60 Percent In 10 Years

Isla Vista - May 28th, 2014

On Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at approximately 2:30 pm, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an apartment in the 6500 block of Pardall Road for a gunshot that had come through the reporting party’s apartment wall.

Deputies arrived and found that a bullet had been shot through the wall from a connecting apartment, deflected off of a TV stand and lodged into the adjacent wall, narrowly missing the resident inside.

Deputies went to the suspect’s apartment and contacted the lone resident, identified as 21-year old Kevin Tym (UCSB student). When questioned, Tym admitted that he was playing with his legally owned handgun and accidentally fired a Glock 17, 9mm round through his neighbor’s wall.

During a search incident to arrest, Tym was found in possession of 7 firearms and approximately 1000 rounds of ammunition. In addition, he was found in possession of high capacity assault rifle magazines.

All of the firearms were legally owned by Tym. All of Tym’s firearms, ammunition and magazines were seized.

Tym was arrested and booked into jail for a violation of 246.3 PC – Negligent discharge of a firearm and 32310(a) PC – Possession of high capacity magazines.

His bail was set at $2,500.

SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

The .45-caliber pistol that killed Lucas Heagren, 3, on Memorial Day last year at his Ohio home had been temporarily hidden under the couch by his father. But Lucas found it and shot himself through the right eye. “It’s bad,” his mother told the 911 dispatcher. “It’s really bad.”

A few days later in Georgia, Cassie Culpepper, 11, was riding in the back of a pickup with her 12-year-old brother and two other children. Her brother started playing with a pistol his father had lent him to scare coyotes. Believing he had removed all the bullets, he pointed the pistol at his sister and squeezed the trigger. It fired, and blood poured from Cassie’s mouth.

Just a few weeks earlier, in Houston, a group of youths found a Glock pistol in an apartment closet while searching for snack money. A 15-year-old boy was handling the gun when it went off. Alex Whitfield, who had just turned 11, was struck. A relative found the bullet in his ashes from the funeral home.

US Child Gun Deaths Rose 60 Percent In 10 Years

Tim Kreider:

"Look, we've collectively decided, as a country, that the occasional massacre is okay with us. It's the price we're willing to pay for our precious Second Amendment freedoms. We're content to forfeit the lives of a few dozen schoolkids a year as long as we get to keep our guns. The people have spoken, in a cheering civics-class example of democracy in action. It's hard to imagine what ghastly catastrophe could possibly change America's minds about guns if the little bloody bookbags of Newtown did not.

After that atrocity, it seemed as if we would finally enact some obvious, long-overdue half-measures. But perfectly reasonable, moderate legislation expanding background checks and banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines was summarily killed in the Senate for no reason other than that a sufficient number of United States senators are owned by the NRA. It made our official position as a nation nakedly explicit: we don't care about any number of murdered children, no matter how many, or how young.

We want our guns."

Rational Nation USA has a post up on this subject.

Dr. Ben Carson: Government subsidies for me = GOOD, for thee = BAD.

Dr. Ben Carson, a talented pediatric surgeon, is the right's newest BFF because he had the courage to tell people they should feel ashamed to take government handouts and live the life of a stinky moocher, which is about the worst thing a poor person can be.  His claim is that taking government welfare makes people lazy and encourages them to hang in a hammock instead of going out and finding jobs.

Here's what he had to say about those mooching moochers who get help from the government:

When you rob someone of their incentive to go out there and improve themselves, you are not doing them any favors. When you take somebody and pat them on the head and say, ‘There, there, you poor little thing. … Let me give you housing subsidies, let me give you free health care because you can’t do that.’ What would be much more empowering is to use our intellect and our resources to give those people a way up and out.”

(That last part is nonsensical, since the government does exactly what would be "much more empowering.")  The assistance the government gives to people who are in dire circumstances and need help comes from "our resources" and gives "those people a way up and out."   That's what the SNAP program does.

Free health care?  How would a single mother, for example, who's working two low-paying part-time jobs that offer no health coverage, provide health insurance for her children?  Worse, if she were to fall ill or have an accident, how would she pay for medical help?  Is he really that callous that he thinks people like that hypothetical single mother do not deserve help from a government of a country where people love to brag about how great it is?  How is a country great that allows poor and desperate people to fend for themselves when there is no way to fend?

So what's Dr. Carson's problem?

Why would he claim that helping people who are desperate is a bad thing for the government to do?

Crooks and Liars reports:

See here's the thing, though. It turns out that for some strange reason, the evil welfare system didn't seem to destroy the incentive for his own mother to go out and make things better for her and her family:

No doubt, Mother Carson deserves tremendous credit, but – in the words of a political sound bite from the last presidential election – she didn’t do it alone. Carson, in his book, tells how his grades improved tremendously when a government program provided him with free eyeglasses because he could barely see. Not only that, in “Gifted Hands” we read this nugget: “By the time I reached ninth grade, mother had made such strides that she received nothing but food stamps. She couldn’t have provided for us and kept up the house without that subsidy.”

Without that stinky moocher-inducing "handout" from the federal government, Ben Carson himself would probably have not succeeded as he has.  The question is why does he now condemn helping others who were as unfortunate as he and his family were?  Why does he think that government subsidies for the poor disincentivizes them, when he is living proof that is not the case.

Is he that blinded by rightwing ideology that he can't see his hypocrisy in claiming government subsidies for the poor and desperate is a bad idea for others, but it wasn't a bad idea for him?

He either has a very selective memory or he's dishonest by pandering to a group of people whose favorite pastime is to demonize poor people and call them moochers and takers.

Why Ben Carson’s Mom Wasn’t a Lazy Moocher, But Everyone Else on Welfare Is

Memorial Day, 2014

Under the cover of darkness and on the eve of Memorial Day, President Obama landed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan for an unannounced visit with U.S. troops.

After a concert from country music star Brad Paisley, Obama spoke before a rally of about 3,000 American troops. Currently, there are 32,000 Americans currently serving in Afghanistan.

“I am afraid to forget. I fear that we human creatures do not forget cleanly, as the animals presumably do. What protrudes and does not fit in our pasts rises to haunt us and make us spiritually unwell in the present. The discontinuities in contemporary life are cutting us off from our roots and threatening us with the dread evil of nihilism in the twentieth century. We may become refugees in an inner sense unless we remember to some purpose. Surely the menace of new and more frightful wars is not entirely unrelated to our failure to understand those recently fought. If we could gain only a modicum of greater wisdom concerning what manner of men we are, what effect might it not have on future events?

It is exceedingly unlikely that I shall ever be able to understand the why and wherefore of war. But sufficient reflection through the mirror of memory may enable me to make sense of my own small career. The deepest fear of my war years, one still with me, is that these happenings had no real purpose. Just as chance often appeared to rule my course then, so the more ordered paths of peace might well signify nothing or nothing much. This conclusion I am unwilling to accept without a struggle; indeed, I cannot accept it all except as a counsel of despair. How often I wrote in my war journals that unless that day had some positive significance for my future life, it could not possibly be worth the pain it cost,” J. Glenn Gray, The Warriors: Reflections on Men in Battle.

SUNDAY NIGHT POETRY

I am pleased to post a prize-winning poem by my 9-year old granddaughter.  I withhold her name for privacy reasons.  This poem was selected by Poetry.org for its Poet-to-Poet competition.

My granddaughter's poem was the only one selected by Poetry.org from her New York school district, and it will be published online and in their poetry journal.

I've been involved with writing poetry and submitting poetry to various journals and publications for many years.  I am so pleased that my granddaughter is following in a family tradition.

Congratulations to her and to all the young people who are writing poetry.

Here is her winning poem that will be posted on Poetry.org's webpage:

Poems

Poems hide in your shoes
Poems creep around the corners
of your dad's old newspapers
Poems can be anything
 anything at all.
They can be the rusty nail
 on your blue locker
or how you feel right after
your soccer team
won the championship
Poems can hide in the screen
of your video games
They jump into your backpack
and come with you to school.
Poems are like the beginning of a new day.
You can't see a poem unless you feel it.

"...craven irresponsible politicians and the NRA."

SALON:  At a press conference earlier today, a self-identified father of one of the victims in last night’s mass shooting near the University of California, Santa Barbara, named his son, Chris Martinez, as one of the victims.

In a heart-wrenching statement the father, Richard Martinez, expressed his profound sadness. His 20-year-old son was on his way to a market when he was killed. “Why did Chris die?” Richard Martinez said at a press conference.

“Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights, what about Chris’ right to live? When will this insanity stop?”

Two other victims have been identified, according to NBC Los Angeles, as Veronika Weiss, a first-year student at UCSB, and her Delta Delta Delta sorority sister, Katie Cooper.

CNN:  Richard Martinez, says his son Christopher Martinez was one of those killed in the shooting that claimed seven in the Isla Vista area near UCSB on Friday night.

The father went on to say "When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say, 'Stop this madness!' Too many have died. We should say to ourselves, 'Not one more!'"

According to the Associated Press, "Martinez says he talked to his son just 45 minutes before he was shot and killed inside a deli. Martinez says his son's roommate tried to revive him, but he died at the scene."

A Representative Climate Change Debate

A "debate" on whether or not climate change is man-made does not mean one person says it is and another person says it isn't.

“...among climate scientists actively publishing [peer-reviewed] climate research, 97% agree that humans humans are causing global warming...the 97% finding was based on over 12,000 papers from 1991-2011 mentioning “global climate change’ or ‘global warming."

 Or let John Oliver explain:

The Daily Caller reported that a new survey of meteorologists contradicts the scientific consensus on climate change. But a simple opinion survey does not debunk that 97 percent of climate science papers found that human activities contribute to global warming -- rather, it only shows the stark differences between climate science research and meteorologists' beliefs.

A recent study conducted by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) surveyed its "professional members" to test how political ideologies and climate expertise influence opinions on manmade global warming. The study found that only 52 percent of its members believe global warming is happening and is caused mostly by humans.

However, this study merely shows that the average opinions of meteorologists are at odds with the majority of scientific research on climate change, and does not, as the Daily Caller claimed, show that "there is much more disagreement among climate scientists than previously thought"  h/t M.M.

Suit and Tie in the 217

"A Counter-Narrative on Black Male Students:

At Central High School's Black History Month Celebration, the Central and Centennial High School African-American Clubs released a joint video countering the negative images of young African-American males in the media.

The students affirmed the following in a video highlighting the successes of young black males within the District:
• We are not gangsters and thugs.
• We are employees and volunteers.
• We are scholars.
• We are athletes.

"The negative stories told daily in the media and in our culture about our young African-American men tend to ignore their successes and don't tell the full story about how young Black men are becoming leaders within our community schools," said Central School Social Worker and African-American Club Sponsors Tiffany Gholson and Barbara Cook, who worked with the students on this effort.

"In this video, our students reclaim the narrative of who they are and inspire other students to follow in their footsteps." In our assembly, we addressed the State of the Youth and highlighted what Black students have overcome from a historical perspective.

The assembly also highlighted how overcoming those obstacles has helped make America stronger and urged students of all backgrounds to carry the torch for future generations."

Caturday is for Tara!

By now you've probably seen the video of the 4-year old boy in Bakersfield, California, who was viciously attacked by a neighbor's dog and who was saved by the family cat, Tara.

According to reports, the cat was a foundling who was accepted into the family before the boy was born.

I've had cats as companions all my adult life, and as wonderful as they've all been, I could not imagine either of them doing what Tara did.  Dogs?  Yes.  But a cat that went after a dog attacking a child? Never heard of that.

My two beloved marmalade cats, Miss Pettipaw and King Yellow Man (named for a Jamaican Reggae singer),  lived long and happy lives (both lived 21 years) and were remarkable in their own particular ways.  Miss Pettipaw was the cat we had when my children were little; and no matter how they picked the poor thing up or disturbed her frequent cat naps to either dress her in doll clothes or put her in a little red wagon for a ride, she never once scratched or hissed at them. Such patience!  Such a gentle, sweet-natured cat.

Our second cat, King Yellow Man, was also a good-sport, a tolerant cat who enjoyed being petted even by strangers, but was also an indescriminate hunter who dragged into the house all sorts of prizes for us to admire: garter snakes, rabbits, toads, and something that was an indistinguishable combination of fur, vegetation, and possibly intestines.

One night my sleep was interrupted by a loud crash I heard coming from the kitchen.  Too sleepy to find out what it was, I decided it was only Yellow Man, doing his usual racing around the house at that time of night or jumping on the counters, knocking over a pan or its lid.  The next morning as I was doing some vacuuming, I noticed what looked like an large gray "dust bunny" under my Queen Anne chair in the living room.  As I bent down to examine it, to my horror I discovered it was a decapitated squirrel, with its head neatly placed beside the body!  So THAT was the ruckus I heard during the night. Somehow the poor squirrel had gotten into the house (it was not unusual during the day for someone to forget to shut the door off the kitchen that went out into the yard). Yellow Man apparently took off after the squirrel when it emerged from wherever it had been hiding during the day, caught it, and bit off the poor thing's head and, of course, left the gory mess for his mistress to clean up.  Men!

No matter.  Here's to cats and the wondrously inscrutable things they do (like leaving hairballs on pillows or knocking spice bottles off the kitchen counter just for the hell of it) and best of all, for being loyal and loving friends.

And to you, Tara, for your amazing heroism in protecting your little boy.

Patridiots get their coup d'etat on!

UPDATE RIGHT HERE

Nothing like a good old fashioned constitutional coup d'etat (does that phrase make me look French?) to give a patridiot a thrill running down his leg, is there?

Tomorrow, if Colonel Klink retired army Colonel Harry Riley gets his way, 10 to 30 million 'merikans will march on Washington D.C., surround its government buildings, and DEMAND! that President Obama (as well as other federal officials) give himself up for committing the treasonous act of being elected twice by a majority of American citizens.  Colonel Riley and his band of brave Strict Constitutionalists will put Obummer on trial; and after testimony by Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, and Sarah Palin, the Marxist Commie Kenyan Usurper will be found guilty and frog-marched off to the firing squad.

At last!  Constitutional FREEDOM!  and LIBERTY!  and JUSTICE! restored and rescued from Obummer The Bloody Marxist Tyrant!!!!!111!!!

Go read Infidel753'sSquatlo-Rant's, and Green Eagle's posts on what promises to be an astoundingly massive Second American Revolution!  Or something.

Here's a sampling of the brilliant minds who support this grandiose and patridiot idea:

And my favorite comes from a fine fellow, John Brickhead, who, in his best patridiot fervor trumpets, "...LET THERE BE JUSTICE ON THOSE WHO PERPERTRATED OUR LIBERTIES!"

Yes, John!  You said a mouthful!  Now go defend liberty and get your coup d'etat on!!!!!!1!1!!!!!!!!!

I am not opposed to this Tea Party, a move our colonists perpertrated on the Crown, King George III, fed up Americans with a failed lying President and corrupt politicians that led to the similar Ukraine uprising as well. . I would support them and they would gain collaboration as well from our citizens. Will foreign nations support us as well. The voice of the people may not always come as votes but brute force. The U S Constitution cannot depend upon the judicial system, to defend her. The people have an obligation to our founding fathers and GOD as well. For GOD blessed America as we could have easliy lost to King George. Then we would be under the United Kingdom today. How far are u willing to go to maintain a way of life and ideas that have policed the world, stopped tyranny and mass murder, led the world as exceptional people and allowed u to sleep in peace. Obama and his cronies need to go. If this be so, let there be justice on those who perpertrated our liberties.

"It's Time For Republicans To Get Over Benghazi." Chuck Todd

As TeaPublicans howl, stamp their feet and demand that America join them in their many failed attempts at turning a terrible tragedy into a scandal, the Benghazi political circus leaves town.

Buh-Bye!

"I’ll hear from Republicans that say, ‘But there are unanswered questions!’ Well, no, all the questions have been answered," he said. "There’s just some people that don’t like the answers, that wish the answers were somehow more conspiratorial, I guess."

Todd said that there were a number of issues, like policy or the United States' response to Arab Spring, worth discussing. "But to sit here and investigate talking points seems to be totally missing the larger point here," he added. "It’s like investigating who cut down one tree in a forest that’s been burned down."

Hey Ann! Why the long face?

Depend on Ann Coulter to set herself up for major blow-back and humiliation when she mocked people who held signs saying "Bring Back Our Girls" in response to the kidnapping of 200+ Nigerian young women.

Good for the people who took her predictably nasty reaction and turned it around to bite her in her repulsive, bony ass.

The results?

Hilarity!

This is her original mockery on the kidnapped young women:

The blow-back fun begins!

This one is pretty damn good for its truth telling:

More truth-telling:

Ding! Ding! Ding!  And the winnah is...

Not nice?  No it isn't, but it's a natural reaction to a woman who wasted her top-shelf education and intellect and decided to make money pandering to the lowliest of the lowly, feeding them bile and inanity for profit and notoriety.

You made your bed, Ann, now sleaze in it.

America's First Lady, Michelle Obama

On this Saturday before Mothers' Day, America's First Lady, Michelle Obama, gave a touching speech honoring mothers everywhere and addressing the tragedy in Nigeria, where 200+ young women were kidnapped and have yet to be returned to their families.

No doubt the bile-filled, bitter and corrosively angry malcontents out there who soil their pants each time the FLOTUS breaths will flop around in the gutter, like demented swine, trying to outdo each other in insulting and slandering this gracious woman.  What they never understand is that their malignity and venom toward Mrs. Obama is a reflection of the rot eating away at them and has nothing to do with her.

Hating someone is like drinking poison and hoping the person you hate dies.

Mrs. Obama is an intelligent, charming, and elegant First Lady.

Brava!

We're lucky to have her living in the White House.

BENGHAZI! BENGHAZI! BEN-FUNDRAISING!

Would the button-popping proud patriotic Gee-Oh--Pee-ers  use a heart-breaking tragedy to fill their political coffers and demean the lives of the men who died in BENGHAZI!?

Would those flag-waving, Kenyan-President-hating Goopers stoop to gutter politics and use the deaths of four Americans to squeeze money out of their gullible base and prolong the investigation of what Charlie Pierce calls "a banquet of nothing burgers?"  Would they continue to Darrell Issalize this terrible misfortune and use it as a grubby tool to raise filthy lucre for the upcoming 2014 elections?  And is Trey Gowdy just another preening hemorrhoid who's emerged from the deep dark fissures of Teabaggistan?

Is it true that the very same people, who condemned the Obambi administration for being tyrannically callous and deceitful over what happened on September 11, 2012, in Libya, would callously and deceitfully exploit that tragedy?

The Gee--Oh--Pee-ers' only goal is to get out their fat cat donors' money bags  the factlings and find out what really happened that night.  Their motives are noble and pure. They seek only the truth--a truth which they've been trying to get their unbiased factlets to conform to for almost two years and which has cost American tax payers millions of minimum wage dollars.  We can be sure that they will report their fair and balanced flying monkey poop, (with absolutely no Hitlery Klintoon or Obummer bias, to the American people, and those factoids will have nothing whatsoever to do with how much cash the they can get the TeaPublicans to stuff into those pure white envelopes and send to the RNCC.

Oh what difference does it make! This is America, and we all love really good scandalesque diversions.

John Boehner dodges on Benghazi fundraising

"Asked again if it is proper for the National Republican Congressional Committee to use this committee money, Boehner said, “Our focus is getting the truth for these four families and for the American people.”

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), whom Boehner tapped to chair the committee, has already said it’s inappropriate to try to raise political money off the investigation. Visitors to the NRCC web site who clicked on a Benghazi-related post this week were then asked to donate money to “stop Democrats from controlling all of Washington.”
