Jeremy Scahill, author of "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army" wrote an article for "The Nation" on Blackwater and the more than $30 million in contracts it was awarded following Hurricane Katrina.

Especially interesting is the background on Joseph E. Schmitz, the former Inspector General of the Department of Defense. He was confirmed to this position by the Senate in March of 2002 and resigned on September 9, 2005, in order to take a position with the Prince Group, a holding company for Blackwater USA, which provides security services and training to the U.S. military in Iraq and elsewhere.
In a previous post on Blackwater, I noted that the current Inspector General for the State Department, Howard Krongard, is the brother of A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard, who was once No. 3 at the CIA and was responsible for Blackwater's first contract with the government.
