US Child Gun Deaths Rose 60 Percent In 10 Years

Isla Vista - May 28th, 2014

On Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at approximately 2:30 pm, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an apartment in the 6500 block of Pardall Road for a gunshot that had come through the reporting party’s apartment wall.

Deputies arrived and found that a bullet had been shot through the wall from a connecting apartment, deflected off of a TV stand and lodged into the adjacent wall, narrowly missing the resident inside.

Deputies went to the suspect’s apartment and contacted the lone resident, identified as 21-year old Kevin Tym (UCSB student). When questioned, Tym admitted that he was playing with his legally owned handgun and accidentally fired a Glock 17, 9mm round through his neighbor’s wall.

During a search incident to arrest, Tym was found in possession of 7 firearms and approximately 1000 rounds of ammunition. In addition, he was found in possession of high capacity assault rifle magazines.

All of the firearms were legally owned by Tym. All of Tym’s firearms, ammunition and magazines were seized.

Tym was arrested and booked into jail for a violation of 246.3 PC – Negligent discharge of a firearm and 32310(a) PC – Possession of high capacity magazines.

His bail was set at $2,500.

SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

The .45-caliber pistol that killed Lucas Heagren, 3, on Memorial Day last year at his Ohio home had been temporarily hidden under the couch by his father. But Lucas found it and shot himself through the right eye. “It’s bad,” his mother told the 911 dispatcher. “It’s really bad.”

A few days later in Georgia, Cassie Culpepper, 11, was riding in the back of a pickup with her 12-year-old brother and two other children. Her brother started playing with a pistol his father had lent him to scare coyotes. Believing he had removed all the bullets, he pointed the pistol at his sister and squeezed the trigger. It fired, and blood poured from Cassie’s mouth.

Just a few weeks earlier, in Houston, a group of youths found a Glock pistol in an apartment closet while searching for snack money. A 15-year-old boy was handling the gun when it went off. Alex Whitfield, who had just turned 11, was struck. A relative found the bullet in his ashes from the funeral home.

Children and Guns: The Hidden Toll

Epidemic: Guns kill twice as many kids as cancer does

US Child Gun Deaths Rose 60 Percent In 10 Years

Tim Kreider:

"Look, we've collectively decided, as a country, that the occasional massacre is okay with us. It's the price we're willing to pay for our precious Second Amendment freedoms. We're content to forfeit the lives of a few dozen schoolkids a year as long as we get to keep our guns. The people have spoken, in a cheering civics-class example of democracy in action. It's hard to imagine what ghastly catastrophe could possibly change America's minds about guns if the little bloody bookbags of Newtown did not.

After that atrocity, it seemed as if we would finally enact some obvious, long-overdue half-measures. But perfectly reasonable, moderate legislation expanding background checks and banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines was summarily killed in the Senate for no reason other than that a sufficient number of United States senators are owned by the NRA. It made our official position as a nation nakedly explicit: we don't care about any number of murdered children, no matter how many, or how young.

We want our guns."

Rational Nation USA has a post up on this subject.

It's a religion for the loons. They're proud that we're an armed nation that kills its children with pride. He's what one of the gun masturbators wrote:

"There is no way that confiscation will work. Ever. That was the intent of our founding fathers: the populace would always be better armed numerically than any standing army.

I've hit targets out to 500 yards with just iron sights using WWII ammunition and a British .303 Enfield. Many guns and ammunition today will still be usable into the 22nd Century.

The liberals have pulled every trick in the book, every propiganda piece possible, and tried outlawing firearms completely.

Sorry, it didn't work. Their worst nightmare happened: the American people re-discovered their roots and reasons for firearms. Then they headed to the nearest gun store and purchased all the black guns they could afford. They are still doing it at a record pace.

Ammunition manufacturers are pumping out rounds like a wartime economy; still the store shelves are empty. Prices of some calibers have quadrupled over the past ten years - mainly due to demand.

All that these central-government types have done is awaken a sleeping giant. They have lost this war and the 2nd Amendment remains."

Not just sick, but galloping insanity.

guns. guns. guns. We need guns...because, well, we just do.

Kind of like clean underwear.

And if I hear one more person say, 'guns don't kill people, people do' I will go nutz

BTW, clean underwear, to the best of my knowledge, doesn't kill people.

I have an idea! Let's encourage all the brown and black people to open-carry AK-47s everywhere it is allowed.

Then watch the extremist gun-nuttery white people crap their pants and demand congress CHANGE THE LAWS!!!!!11!

Les Carpenter said...

"Guns don't kill people; people with guns kill people."

If I may... "Guns don't kill people; irresponsible or crazy people with guns kill people."

I thought it needed a bit of clarification. Maybe it's just me.

Shaw Kenawe said...

I don't think all people who shoot other people are crazy or irresponsible. Even the nicest, most responsible people kill and maime. We've read enough about homeowners who shoot first, believing their home is being invaded when it's only a stranger seeking help, or a homeowner who has a dispute with a neighbor. Not everyone who resorts to killing or injuring others with their firearm is crazy. (Just ask Dick Cheney's friend, Harry Wittington.) But having a firearm nearby almost guarantees that in the heat of an argument or feeling despondent and hopeless at the moment, a gun owner will take that weapon and use it upon his/her partner or him/herself.

As a nation we have proved to ourselves and the rest of the civilized world that we just don't know how to be responsible firearms owners. Not when we tolerate 30,000+ deaths from them a year, and not when we've had a 60% increase in 10 years in deaths of children.

Not all gun owners are irresponsible or stupid, but allowing any idiot, mentally ill or otherwise, to purchase a gun without a background check, and to allow gun clips, glocks, and arms like AK-47 to be purchased indescrimately is, IMO, insane.

I'm very aware that not everyone agrees with that.

ohohoh, and RN your clarification is perfect sense, and Shaw's amplification fits as well.

...what is extremely frightening in this discussion is the EXPANSION of GUN RIGHTS...more states now allow loaded guns in taverns, saloons, bars.

The Error of Mystification. There is an article of faith in science that everything is knowable, or at least potentially knowable. People who invoke The Error of Mystification may claim that some things are beyond the reach of human understanding and are therefore unknowable, that some phenomena occur at random, that certain lines of inquiry are off limits, that what we now know is all we need to know, and recursive studies will not improve our knowledge and therefore constitute a waste of taxpayer money. The Error of Mystification is merely another error of logical reasoning; and the people who invoke it often have a bias or special interest agenda. Often what they really want is a premature closure of inquiry to keep us in a permanent state of mystification ... and ignorance.

The NRA trades on errors of mystification and wants to keep it this way by blocking serious research into gun violence. The NRA ...

Punished the Centers for Disease Control for publishing data on major causes of death including death by firearms - stripping $2.6 million from the CDC budget (the amount spent on the death by firearm study);

Successfully outlawed Federal research grants with this provision: “None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control;”

Introduced bills in the state legislatures of Alabama, Florida, and North Carolina to ban doctors from asking their patients if they owned or kept a gun in the house (with no exemption for patients who are depressed, suicidal, or seriously disturbed).

The NRA wants the American public to believe that the issue of gun violence is an intractable problem with no possible legislative solution, and that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” In other words, the NRA wants to keep us in a permanent state of mystification because ignorance breeds fear, and fear means more guns.

Actually I have a problem with this being legislated myself. Although I can get my arms around exceptions for suicidal, or seriously disturbed individuals.

Depression, until it develops into seriously disturbed or suicidal I find it of questionable merit.

Hell mot of America is depressed at one time or the other. Usually it is fleeting and not dangerous.

A front door access national uniform firearm legislation with appropriate regulations consistently enforced is where the effort needs to be.

There are over 3300 drownings a year and it is the number 2 killer of children 1-4 years old yet we don't hear anyone banning pools. Maybe it is because it is not the pools that caused the drownings but the irresponsible actions of adults and kids that can't swim.

The leftists are all about banning guns. They are up in arms because irresponsible or crazy people with guns kill people.

Shaw, responsible people do not kill and do not shoot at an unknown target.

The NRA has gone to far but the government has proven give them a inch and they will take a mile, or your land and money.

Skud, are you nuts?

1) Pools are not designed, manufactured, or marketed for the purpose of killing. Therefore false equivalency.

2) Who is talking about banning guns outright?

Uniform national firearm legislation with appropriate regulations, effective background checks, longer "cooling off periods", and consistent enforcement is a good start.

Yes, the NRA has gone to far, and it appears that you and many others are fine with the present situation. That my friend is a problem.

Since a large number of shootings happen in the home with a gun that is in that home, it's not an unreasonable question, which some doctors started asking because of the high numbers. The question my doctor always asks is do I feel safe in my home, or when I live. They go on to define, am I being bullied, beaten, threatened, is there a gun in the house, etc., etc.. Then they ask if I have depressive thoughts, or have I thought of suicide. Some might take offense to those questions, to some it is an opportunity to get questions answered and help. I usually find those questions kind of funny, but understand why I'm asked.

RN: “Actually I have a problem with this being legislated myself.

To expand upon my last comment above, while I was looking for references on NRA attempts to ban or suppress research studies on gun violence, I found an article from the American Pediatric Association that expressed grave concern over sharp increases in gun-related deaths and injuries among children. I inserted the phrase “ depressed, suicidal, or seriously disturbed” as examples of valid questions for any family practitioner to ask of patients or their charges. These concerns are relevant to Shaw’s post, and especially relevant in view of the latest massacre where parental efforts of intervention had failed.

This angers me: That the NRA would insinuate itself into any PRIVATE DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP, and enlist the aid of state governments to ban doctors from asking perfectly legitimate questions, such as identifying risk factors that might impact on the health and safety of patients.

When any special interest group stoops this low, then I have no other word for them: EVIL!

your first point...WRONG....I AND MOST leftist do not want to ban guns....check it out and report back where that statement is closely accurate.

your second point.....is in total agreement with the LEFT's opinion.
