Sunday Science Blog

One of my favorite videos.

The rare kakapo parrot gets really, really friendly with a visitor in his environment.

I wonder if this parrot suffers bigotry from puritanical, fundamentalist parrots who condemn his humanophilic orientation? But if Taliban tribesmen can do it with goats and a British future Prime Minister can do it with a pig, I guess a parrot can do it with a naturalist.

Still, I hope this isn't typical of the male kakapo's ability to identify females of its own kind, or the species is likely to remain rare.

Shaw, re: the cartoon in your banner. It's interesting to read the right wingers' take on Pope Francis' visit to the US:

For example: "Pope Francis is exceedingly political."

Wow! What an original insight. Did the guy who wrote that say the same thing when we read the political crap coming from the likes of Huckabee (who claims he's a pastor), or Billy and Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson, the once alive but now dead Jerry Falwell, Pastor Hagee, and every single Christian pastor who manages to get a microphone in front of his or her politically conservative mouth? The whiner who wrote the above is your typical Xtian who doesn't see the log inl his eye.

He also wrote: "The Roman Catholic Church's historical record with regard to political involvement is hardly pure."

Really. Brilliant observation, Sparky. Did it not occur to him how "political" the Protestant Churches were when they said nothing to their KKK members of their churches who killed Americans with dark skin? No pastors that I recall reading about told their worshippers not to kill African-Americans just because they looked at white women or dared to vote. The Catholic Church AND the Protestant Church have many sins they can brag about. To point to only one Xtian denomination show sickening bias, but not surprising at all.

How do you find these?

I don't remember how I found the video on the kakapo. For the others I've posted here, I check in on several science blogs. One is on facebook Frans de Waal's public page (I've read most of the books he's published -- he's done a lot of research on bonobos). And another is Three Quarks Daily.
