I'm grateful to the other officers for stepping forward and saying 'this was wrong'. I'm grateful to the jury for not buying into the insulting and absurd defense arguments. At the same time, I'm very sad that it's taken this long and countless black bodies to get to a point where America finally said; "Enough!"
I'll sleep well tonight knowing that this verdict was reached but I'll still worry because, on appeal, it's still anyone's guess what will happen. When they finally slam the prison cell door on Chauvin, then and only then will I be truly satisfied with the verdict.
The blue line buckled but it's not yet broken as it needs to be, imo. The police will not regain the level of respect and admiration they crave without good cops calling out the bad cops.

Bluebullamerica, very eloquently said and spot on.

Chauvin is a bad cop. And it was the job of the good cops to do what they did at the trial, speak the truth.

Everyone who witnessed that 9 minutes and 29 seconds and heard Floyd beg for his life knew in their hearts that was wrong and it had nothing to do with good policing.

Justice prevailed, but more POC will suffer from bad policing. This is a beginning, but not the end of the shame in this country of this sort of violence and murder in policing.

The system in Minnesota politics got behind prosecuting this cop. I have no doubt that if the political system had decided to support the cop we never would have his fellow cops testifying against him; but the political powers could not get around the video evidence. If there were no video evidence would the political powers in Minnesota prosecuted the cop? I doubt it. One win in a thousand losses tells us this fight is not close to being over.

And now here come the appeals. I hope the judge denies them.

The Prophet Dervish Z Sanders said...

Quote: Former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin will likely seek to overturn his murder and manslaughter convictions by arguing that the jury was prejudiced by media coverage and a settlement in the civil case brought by George Floyd's family, though his odds of success are slim, legal experts said.

This is from a NewsMax article.

Derv,I thinks the most important element leading to the verdicts was the testimony of the police chief, the head of training and other Minneapolis police officers. Rather than closing ranks behind a fellow officer, they stood up and told the truth.

Good to see for change, and Bravo to them.

Shocking that he was found guilty after watching 9 minutes of a guy pleading for his life. The verdict was agreed on months ago they just needed to give him his day in court. He will have a rough few years because he is a cop and did take the life of a black man.

I believe it is set for appeal thanks to all the media and of course one other person. Maybe now they can look in chicago for all those shooters killing black children and women. The law worked in this case but why anyone would be a cop, teacher or nurse now days is puzzling.

Jerry, Mike

The guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin is one step closer to bringing accountability to the excessive use of force, aggression and murder by a police officer who should have been removed from the force long ago.

Mr. Crump, Mr. Ellison and all the dignitaries at the microphone led by example, speaking to the long road ahead to true justice and the end of systemic racism. I hope all Americans are feeling relief about this and hope that true justice, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is a human right for every human life, regardless of their circumstances, and the sincere heartfelt hope that black men can walk out their door and not fear losing their life by police or being knee-necked to the ground.

skud, Tell us all how you know for a fact that the "The verdict was agreed on months ago..."

Go read the original police report of Floyd's death which was written up before seeing Darnella Frazier's video of the murder and before the cops' body cams were reviewed. The truth is that the police wrote up a lie to cover their asses. I have evidence of this on the post above this one. Where is YOUR evidence that "the verdict was agreed on months ago?" It appears that you're just making up stuff because you don't like the outcome of the trial.

Also, you failed to mention that Chauvin had a long record of inappropriate handling of perps. Prior to the murder of George Floyd, he had been involved in three police shootings, one of which was fatal. Chauvin had 18 complaints on his official record, two of which ended in discipline, including official letters of reprimand.

So your scandalous claim that "the verdict was agreed on months ago" is nothing more than bitter, libelous rot.

Of course your other nonsensical statement about the appeal because of the media and "one other person" is grossly uninformed as well.

THE JURY WAS SEQUESTERED! They heard nothing from the media or the "one other person."

What does jury sequestration mean?

Sequestering a jury means separating jurors from other people, keeping the individuals deliberating the verdict away from outside influences that could potentially sway their opinions.

Throughout Chauvin's trial, jurors have been partially sequestered, supervised in the courthouse at all times. But they've been allowed to go home at night, according to our VERIFY fact-checking team.

Now, the jury will be required to stay in a hotel until a verdict is reached. Each day, jurors will deliberate until the early evening. They won't have their phones or electronic devices with them, KARE 11 Anchor Lou Raguse said.

"Because this jury is being sequestered, they are in effect going into a bubble," criminal defense attorney Brock Hunter told KARE. "Completely isolated from the rest of the world."

Hunter explained that jurors will also be escorted everywhere by sheriff's deputies, who will make sure they're safe and that no one has contact with them.

"That's going to extend to their hotel. The sheriff's deputies are going to be present and make sure that they're not leaving, that they're not having any communications with the outside world. It's a very strange, twilight zone-like existence for these jurors," he explained.

These are President Biden's words:

Biden noted that he had waited until the Chauvin jury had been sequestered before making his own feelings about the criminal case public.

“I’m praying the verdict is the right verdict, which is — I think it’s overwhelming, in my view,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “I wouldn’t say that unless the jury was sequestered now, not hearing me say that.”

Tucker Carlson spilling out more lies on Fox news.

Protesters didn't influence the Jury.

Maybe if it was Insurrectionist possibly will instill fear in some folks because they are so violent. We'll see what the juries find in some of the proud boys, oath keepers and all the rest of the Fuhrer violent followers when the trial convenes.

A few thoughts:

We will see incredible veneration for “St. George of Floyd.” That veneration is unreasonable. Just look at the last few years of his life.

Something that bothers me about the trial: it became a form of entertainment of sorts. Much like the OJ trial. A trial should not be a circus event.

Furthermore, all those cheering the verdict in the streets. A mob, really. What part did this mob playin the verdict?

"We will see incredible veneration for “St. George of Floyd.” That veneration is unreasonable. Just look at the last few years of his life."

S.K.: Have you looked at the previous years of Chauvin's career as a LEO? There's nothing to be proud of there. He had a long record of inappropriate handling of perps. Prior to the murder of George Floyd, he had been involved in three police shootings, one of which was fatal. Chauvin had 18 complaints on his official record, two of which ended in discipline, including official letters of reprimand.

But go ahead an whine about the victim being venerated. Floyd is dead because of Chauvin. And casting stones on Floyd's reputation while ignoring Chauvin's doesn't make you look good.

"Something that bothers me about the trial: it became a form of entertainment of sorts. Much like the OJ trial. A trial should not be a circus event."

S.K.: What did you see? the courtroom was NOT a circus event. What happened outside had nothing to do with the trial and how it was conducted by the judge.

"Furthermore, all those cheering the verdict in the streets. A mob, really. What part did this mob playin the verdict?"

S.K. It played NO PART. The jury was partially sequestered during the trial and COMPLETELY SEQUESTERED during its deliberations. Don't confuse your experiences watching tv with what the jury experienced. Those are two different things.

You betray your bitterness at the verdict by characterizing the cheering crowds as a "mob."
No. A mob is what was at the January 6th insurrection and attack of the Capitol Building. Those thugs were armed and dangerous. The cheering people after the verdict were relieved to see JUSTICE for once after a LEO murdered another POC.

I suggest you take to your fainting couch and let this all pass.

Knowing at least 17 other people complained prior about Chauvin's police brutality and nothing was done. In essence making it possible for him to take George's life just knowing he'd get away with it as he had so many times prior.

Reform now! Abolish qualified immunity Now!

PS that S.K.C. is a copy cat. That comment was taken from another blog.

Ms. Shaw, you just became my new spirit animal... Love ya.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Bluebullamerica,

Well that's a first and an honor for me! But I don't exactly know how a spirit animal should comport herself! Hugs to you!

But to be serious. I've read some of the far right Trumper news sites and blogs and am shocked at their reactions: Bitterness, anger, contempt, and egregious tone deafness. They just don't understand the difference between a group of people who take to the streets to protest systemic brutality by SOME -- too many IMO--- LEOs against POC, and a mob of armed people who attacked the Capitol because they fell for the Big Lie concocted and promoted by Donald Trump. They are not the same things. And yet, those far righties can't seem to grasp that.

This is just my opinion: I believe those folks are happy to point to George Floyd's past so they can justify Chauvin's actions. Hell, they're excusing what Chauvin did even as I type these words. They even refer to POC as "primates" thinking that's a derogatory label, but not understanding that's exactly what they are too!

And there's the rub! They DON'T SEE POC AS THEIR EQUALS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS. They mock George Floyd's past behaviors and point to it as proof of "primate" behavior that's not worthy of consideration as a human being, as shared humanity.

Meanwhile, those are the very same folks who trashed, maligned, mocked, and slandered Barack Obama, who achieved the highest level of leadership in America through hard work and good intentions. Those folks referred to him too as a monkey/ape/primate.

What does that tell me? They can't see beyond skin color to look at POC's shared humanity with all of us, no matter what level of achievement they attain.

They are pharisaic in their chest-thumping Christianity: Always eager to brag how godly they are while at the same time betraying every tenet of their religion.

Here's an example of the swamp of racists and their reaction to the Chauvin trial:

Ed, please … for your own sake, for your own health and peace of mind, try to avoid using logic when discussing any issue involving those poor oppressed black folk. Although I do have one thought: if blacks (understandably) do not like being compared to monkeys, why do inner-city blacks act like monkeys?

Taking their cue from the magistrates, who have sanctified themselves into MAKING laws instead of interpreting those written by legislators, the Chauvin jury appointed themselves modern Solomons by offering a cop in sacrifice to the chimps and baboons as prophylaxis against the total razing of Minneapolis and other cities.

Poetic justice will be had when all whites are shipped off to Liberia leaving only the democrats to run a country with 100,000,000 Negroes, Gang Bangers and Illegals. The show will be worth the price of admission.

Waters should be put in stocks outside her vermin district somewhere with several paddles hung on the uprights to be used for teachable moments for mad max. But in truth I came to this conclusion many years ago.

Now watch with Waters inciting blacks … black on white assaults are going to increase, and they are going to be bloody. Bloody as in Mogadishu with primates running around with machetes. It’s already started in Ohio. It will only get worse.

Referring to POC as "primates," "monkeys," "vermin," etc. is an old racist trope that dehumanizes POC so that hating and in turn killing them is easy.

Those people are sick.

Having grown up in the south, I've seen all too much of this nonsense. Sad to say, but most of those using terms like 'monkey', and all the other names they could think of, actually consider themselves Christian. I'm not a Christian, but even I've read enough of the Bible to know that the God they presume to worship wouldn't tolerate that kind of mockery, hatred and distrust for a second.
They are none too bright either. We are all primates and we learn that in grade school. In my old town in Texas we had a school board meeting and a woman actually stood up and demanded that the science book be banned because it stated that we were homosapiens and she was offended because "Jesus" says that's a sin. There was actual clapping by others at the meeting. Talk about a face palm moment! These fools would need to study for an eye test.

Ms Shaw, "Tell us all how you know for a fact that the "The verdict was agreed on months ago..."

There was a video of the police holding him down while he was pleading he can't breathe. Pretty much sowed up the case except on what counts and what is the sentence Surprised you didn't see the verdict ahead of time and it was a just verdict based on the evidence.

The celebration of the convection shows where we are as a country. People celebrate a person found guilty of killing another person, somehow I don't see the reason to celebrate.
