What else is new?

By Peter Wehner, A few weeks ago former "President" Donald Trump referred to the 2020 election as the “greatest Election Fraud in the history of our Country.” By the end of the week, he had issued a statement saying, “As our Country is being destroyed, both inside and out, the Presidential Election of 2020 will go down as THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY!”

What else is new? These are the ravings of a 74-year-old sociopath, isolated and banned from social media, living in Mar-a-Lago, where he is crashing wedding parties and delivering rambling monologues.
Or at least, that would be the right way to look at things, if not for the fact that the GOP remains fully in Trump’s thrall, with its leadership more committed than ever to spreading his foundational lies and conspiracy theories. Under Trump’s sway, the Republican Party is becoming more fanatical, venturing even further into a world of illusion.
Trump’s grip on the Republican Party was on display once again last week, when Representative Liz Cheney was ousted from her leadership post as conference chair. Her fireable offense? Refusing to remain silent in the face of Trump’s ongoing efforts to undermine our constitutional system. She wants to “relitigate the past,” it’s said, despite the fact that it is Trump, not Cheney, who is obsessing over the 2020 election.
No former president, and certainly no president defeated after only one term, has so dominated his party after he left office. So Trump’s words matter. They mattered in the lead-up to, and on the day of, the deadly attack on the Capitol on January 6. They still matter. And if the Republican Party doesn’t counteract these lies rather than indulge them, political violence will become more acceptable and more prevalent on the American right.
THIS ASSESSMENT ISN’T based on mere speculation; we know that many of the people who participated in the violent assault on the Capitol believed that they were acting patriotically, foot soldiers in the 21-century version of the American Revolution, doing what they understood their leader was asking of them. As a Washington Post story put it, “The accounts of people who said they were inspired by the president to take part in the melee inside the Capitol vividly show the impact of Trump’s months-long attack on the integrity of the 2020 election and his exhortations to supporters to ‘fight’ the results.” The Post story points out that a video clip of rioters mobbing the Capitol steps caught one man screaming at a police officer: “We were invited here! We were invited by the president of the United States!”

LOL! Gail Collins today in the NYTimes:

“This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American history,” Donald Trump said, complaining about the multiple probes into his business practices. That was in an online statement practically no one seems to have read.

Truly, of all the former president’s problems, his greatest woe has to be that Twitter ban. As The Washington Post cruelly reported, the new website he’s put up as a replacement has 'attracted fewer estimated visitors than the pet-adoption service Petfinder and the recipe site Delish.' Well, yeah. Take your pick: a new puppy, a new pasta recipe or a new post-presidential whine."

LOL! LOL! LOL!

The Orange Turd has accomplished an incredible feat, he has proved one can parlay their father's wealth and influence into eventually becoming a total failure at everything of true consequence that they attempt. Failure is crtainly the Turd's greatest success.

Whining is all that the GQP is good for, these days. They whine about everything and proffer nothing. No solutions, no help, no encouragement unless you're a billionaire and no ideas. The only thing they offer is "NO" to every common-sense suggestion offered by the president. Truly, they are a waste of space.

A few people crossed the line on 6 Jan, some of whom were double agents, leftists posing as trumpers, and caused a ruckus with some minor damage to gummint propitty.

The damage was minimal, and nobody got hurt, except for the shooting by a Barney Fife Capitol Cop of a Trump supporter climbing thru a window which was already broken.

The fact that people DARED to protest a stolen election got libs’ panties all in a wad to the point that they now demand a special congressional commission to investigate and eventually terminate anyone seen wearing a MAGA hat on the Capitol grounds that day.

How-som-ever, hundreds of days . . . weeks . . . MONTHs of out-of-control looting, rioting, arson, assault by welfare-dependent mau-maus in cities across the country protesting the interruption of still another career thug-on-drugs’ divinization is ignored as just people letting off a little steam after centuries of oppression by white privilege.

It seems proboco is a bigger lunatic liar than tRUMP.

The party of NO refuses to say NO to tRUMP. Sad.

Anon, Bluebullamerica, and Mike

"proboco" comment was in Comment Moderation this AM. I normally delete such trash, but I thought people should see how what's left of the GQP thinks.

I wonder if a Democratic president who lost an election and did what Trump did, would proboco think it was just a small disturbance had Democratic supporters attacked the nation's Capitol, injuring and causing the deaths of people? Of course not. They would be building gallows right now to hang the traitors who did that had they been Democrats.

What's left of the GQP are dead-enders and people who believe only Republicans have the right to govern, and if Democrats win, then it HAS to be a fraud.

We are witnessing the dregs of the Republican Party destroying our precious democracy.

Mark. My. Words.

GQP won't show "reluctance and restraint". They'll burn the f'ing house down. We're faced with only bad choices. One of these bad choices will preserve voting rights, punish insurrectionists, build back our country, and save (even if temporarily) our democracy. I choose this one.

Frank,

I'm with you.

This is what former Republican Steve Schmidt says:

"Faith and belief in American democracy has been poisoned by the BIG LIE and the GOP has metastasized into a quasi fascist, blood and soil

Conspiracy cult that venerates its leader Donald Trump with obedience, loyalty and devotion. The absence of accountability from the insurrection will poison our republic and guarantees political bloodshed. The extremists will be emboldened. This event cannot be turned away from. It is time to stop pretending about the threat. It is clear, present and dangerous. Clarity is required. Duty demands it."

NY prosecutors examining the Trump Organization seem to be treating it like it's run by mobsters.

Similar to mob organizations, the Trump Org is run by family members who prosecutors want to "flip."

Prosecutors could seek racketeering charges, used in both organized crime and business contexts.

Dave, Wow! It's difficult to believe that those folks are my fellow Americans. I honestly can't understand how they can see what happened on Jan. 6 and not feel utter despair for our democracy. They saw the same things I saw -- an attack the likes of which one would have witnessed in a 3rd world country run by an authoritarian, not America!

I read today that the current GQP leaders have said that even if Trump is indicted for criminal acts, they will continue to support him for another chance to be POTUS! IOW, they will support a crook. We've seen this happen in undemocratic countries, and it's happening here and now in America.

And the people on the Mother Ship are fine with seeing the destruction of our democratic norms all because they're blinded by their allegiance to Trump and his Big Lie.

Every Republican Senator who is trying to kill a real investigation of the coup attempt in the United States has either something to hide or is covering up for a fellow Republican. It's that simple. The guilty never want a trial.

I think Collins is off just a bit when she references "a new post-presidential whine".
He's still whining about the same old crap. Look for him to go heavy on the "witch hunt" as the grand jury reports out a true bill.

He should really be in shape for the trial.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Yeah. Trumpty whines that no one has been treated as badly as he has.

But then, no POTUS has been as crooked as he is either. He's made Nixon look like Mother Teresa.

(Glad to see you here. Hope you're well.)

As it regards the inability of the GOP to even consider what caused the events 1/6, intransigence is the word.

A party that had what, 6 different investigations into the events of Benghazi, cannot bring themselves in the Senate to support legislation to establish the 1/6 commission. A GOP that we should note, helped craft the legislation in the House, getting everything from Nancy Pelosi they asked for.

What a bunch of maroons...

Shaw Kenawe said...

Dave, I think people need to understand that the GQP is an anti-democracy cult. It ceased being a political party when it started worshipping a corrupt, infantile orange bag of flesh.

Thousands and thousands of actual conservatives have left the old GOP, and now it's nothing but a cult led by cynical anti-democracy cowards, supported by clueless folks like the people on the Mother Ship and other Trump-blind blogs.

I've lost hope for my fellow Americans who haven't the courage to look at what has happened to America since Trump descended the escalator in 2015.

Mindfullness of body, Mindfulness of feelings, Mindfulness of mind, and mindfulness of Dhammas; the four foundations the GOP needs to practice. Relentlessly. Which is to say experiencing reality as it really is. Not as they've been conditioned to believe.

But don't hold your breath.

So called 'conservatives' can scream all day long that they are the 'party of liberty', but their actions say the opposite. They pass bills smothering free speech, the do everything they can to keep people from voting and they want government to tell women what to do with their bodies. They are most clearly the anti-liberty party.
They also whine about the 'debt', but only when a Democrat is in office. They fight hard to protect tax cuts for billionaires and spit on the middle and working classes. They waste millions chasing fantasies and then want to gut programs that actually help most Americans.
They claim to be the 'big tent' party but chase away anyone with even a modicum of independent thought and crucify everyone who dares say anything against their conman messiah. Their 'big tent' isn't even a 'pup tent', at this point -- it's an overturned tupperware bowl covering crazed fire ants!

The Trumpublican Party wants to end "cancel culture" as soon as they cancel votes by POC and kick/cancel people like Liz Cheney out of leadership positions in their cult.

The Trumpublican Party is the party that hounded Hillary because 4 people died in the BENGHAZI! tragedy. Five people died and dozens were maimed and wounded as a result of Trump's thugs attacking the US Capitol building in an attempt to overthrow democracy. And the Trumpublican leadership in Congress doesn't want a commission to find out who was behind the January 6th attack on American democracy.

The current GQP is a rogue, anti-democracy party. We have to investigate their attempt to disrupt and overturn a free and fair election and shame them for eternity for their treachery.
