"America's democracy was almost stolen from her."
In a statement before the hearing, Luttig said: “A stake was driven through the heart of American democracy on January 6 2021, and our democracy today is on a knife’s edge.
“America was at war on that fateful day, but not against a foreign power. She was at war against herself. We Americans were at war with each other – over our democracy.”
The hearing which followed focused on efforts by Trump and advisers to convince Pence to block certification of Joe Biden’s victory, Pence’s refusal to do so and the deadly attack on the US Capitol which put Pence in danger.
Closing the hearing, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the Democratic committee chair, asked Luttig to say what he meant by calling Trump and his supporters a clear and present danger.
Luttig said:
“Almost two years after that fateful day … Donald Trump and his allies and supporters are a clear and present danger to American democracy.”
“That’s not because of what happened on January 6. It is because to this very day the former president and his allies and supporters pledge that in the presidential election of 2024, if the former president or his anointed successor as the Republican party presidential candidate were to lose that election, they would attempt to overturn that 2024 election in the same way that they attempted to overturn the 2020 election, but succeed in 2024 where they failed in 2020.”
Eastman clerked for Luttig. Luttig is much revered and was perhaps the single most prominent conservative judge on the court of appeals. Eastman is a pipsqueak and rogue. Today is going to be like Luttig taking down Eastman’s pants and spanking him in front of the whole country.
What I'll never understand is the devotion and admiration that Trump's cultists still give to him, knowing that he plunged a dagger into the heart of our democracy; that he conspired to overthrow a free and fair election; that he incited an insurrection against his own government; and that he placed in mortal danger his own vice president.
Who are the people who still support this traitor to America?

Millions of Americans are still bamboozled by The Lost King of Babble-On.
The hearings have been eye-popping in their revelations of Donald J. Trump's unprecedented corruption as POTUS and the benighted people who aided and abetted the crook.
Again, I ask: Who are the people who continue to support this traitor?
If only a pollster would dare to ask the question of Republican respondents: Would you have approved of the killings of Vice-President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi it it meant President Trump would have remained in power?
I suspect if such hypothetical Republicans answered honestly, at least 40 percent would be fine with the assassinations.

Once one is bamboozled, those bamboozled do not want to see they are bamboozled.
Lost King Of Babble-On tRump supporters do not measure his success by what he does for them. These are weak and small people. They measure by what he does against people they do not like. That is why they see him as being “successful.” This is why they will never abandon him. His tormenting of the “others” sustains them.

Heck Ray... Eastman was asked if he thought Al Gore in 2000 or Kamala Harris should've or could use his theory to overturn an election like he was advocating for Trump...
His answer... of course not.
Why?

Those are the words of the highly respected former federal judge, Michael Luttig. He was on the list for SCOTUS -- very conservative and a giant in jurisprudence.
It is HIS opinion that YES, the people who voted for and continue to support Donald J. Trump are also a "clear and present danger," since their support for this traitor to America encourages him and other like him in politics to pursue their anti-American, anti-democratic illegal schemes to take down our representative democracy.
That should scare the beejeebees out of every American and YOU!
PS. Judge Luttig isn't the only Conservative who understands this. Millions of other non-Trump Republicans are on the same page as Judge Luttig. After 4 miserable years of Trump's horrendous presidency, millions of those who initially supported Trump have turned away from him and his corrupt assault on our democracy.
The coming hearings will show more of his treachery and lawlessness.
If ever anyone needed to be in prison, it is Donald J. Trump for what he did to America.
What is must befuddling is that 70 million people refused to see what was directly in front of them in 2016. And so in 2020 they blindly voted for him AGAIN. Fortunately he lost in 2020 by 7 million legitimare votes.
But the esteemed Judge Luttig is absolutely correct, 2024 will very likely see more violence than 2020 if either tRump or tRump's endorsed authoritarian fascist is defeated. What tRump wrought will not go away anytime soon. America is now DIVIDED. The anti American tRump authotitarians are continuing to plot the overthrow of our 230+ year democratic republic unless they get what they want.
Nothing is permenant and we are witnessing real time the slow insidious erosion of the very principles our founders put in place.
