THE SCOTUS OVERTURNS ROE V WADE

Justice Clarence Thomas (the justice whose wife joined in with the cabal to interfere with the Constitutional mandate to certify the electoral college votes -- a crime) -- that Clarence Thomas wrote this after the ruling:

"...we should  reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell..."

This religionist Court is going after birth control. Yes, birth control for married and unmarried people. Then it will be poised to overturn Lawrence and Obergefell. Notably absent from Justice Thomas's march backwards is the privacy issue where miscegenation is concerned.

The American people do not agree with this decision. A majority of Americans believe it is a woman's right to choose. Not a group of  six Catholic justices.

I'm grateful I live in a forward-thinking, pro-choice state, Massachusetts, where women, not 6 Conservative Christian justices, get to decide their reproductive issues.

We now join with theocratic nations in being a forced-pregnancy country.

Let’s be 100% clear. If Republicans win control of the House, Senate and White House two years from now, they will pass a national abortion ban. And no matter where you live, no matter how pro-choice your state is, women and doctors will be locked up for practicing health care.

Forced birth in a country with: —No universal healthcare —No universal childcare —No paid family & medical leave —One of the highest rates of maternal mortality among rich nations This isn't about "life." It's about control.

This is true. David and other young people like him will change this.

It’s ok- we’re going to outlive this scotus, these senators, trump and the NRA :)

At least it gives women a choice to go to another state and not ban it altogether. I think they should have left it alone but as one president said, elections have consequences.

"At least it gives women a choice to go to another state"

And for people who can’t afford that? Don’t have access to cars? Don’t have child care for children they are leaving in order to travel? People who can’t take multiple days off work? People who need abortions for emergency medical situations that cannot wait for planning and travel? It is a necessary healthcare that should be protected everywhere.

Also you do realize that there are multiple states that are trying to pass laws to make it illegal to even travel out of state to get an abortion.

I'm feeling the same today as I did the day after the 2016 elections...

skud, perhaps you're not aware that there are some girls and women who would not have the financial ability to travel to another state to receive an abortion. Texas, for example, is a big a some countries. To travel to a state that allows abortion would sometimes take 2 days! There are people like that don't have the ability to do that, even if you know none.

We are the only advanced nation to deny a woman's right to choose. And this is the first time in American history that a right has been taken away. Never happened before.

The 6 who voted to send it back to the states, some states with draconian rules, some more liberal and some that give the girl or woman the choice.

It is my opinion that those justices who struck down Roe v Wade are Conservative Christian religionists who are imposing their will on the rest of the diverse religious country. For example, the Jewish religion does NOT prohibit abortion, neither do many liberal Protestant religions, and what about people who are nonbelievers?

A majority of Americans support a woman's right to choose. And six Conservative Christians who were not elected, and 3 of whom were appointed by a criminal president, made a decision for millions and millions of girls and women.

Now we hear that Justice Thomas wants to get rid of Griswold and Obergefell. Griswold? That made buying contraceptives for family planning for even MARRIED couples illegal, as they were before Griswold! Obergefell legalized same sex marriage.

We're heading toward a theocracy. This will not stand.

This is the consequence of elections. The president (that the people elected) chose his nominees for the Supreme Court. Did the people know what they were voting for? They usually don't, but it took multiple presidential elections to get the Supreme Court we have now. We get the leadership we vote for, and we get the court they appoint.
A new generation will now find out about getting an abortion without the protections of Row/Wade. It was an ugly process full of death and the destruction of women's lives.
A perfect example that the Supreme Court is ruled by party politics. We can wait until another Supreme Court overrules this decision, or we can TRY to pass a Constitutional amendment protecting a women's right to choose. We will need overwhelming Democratic majority throughout the country to do that, and that is impossible for the foreseeable future.

To the rest of the developed world, the US is a "developing 3rd world country" struggling with basic human rights, healthcare, and peaceful transitions of power - all thanks to our fundamentalist Christians who are too ignorant to understand freedom of religion.

We now join these countries, as red states institute strict anti-abortion trigger laws now that the SCOTUS has ruled to overturn R v W.

El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Congo, Egypt, Madagascar, Iraq, Laos and the Philippines.

My thoughts exactly:

Rep. Jamie Raskin
@RepRaskin

The House passed the Women’s Health Protection Act months ago to codify Roe. The Senate must reject the filibuster and pass it. This is the worst reversal of constitutional freedom since the Court gutted the Reconstruction amendments in the 19th and 20th centuries.

5 of the 9 on the court were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote.

Republicans have won the popular vote 1 time in 30 years.

You’d be hard pressed to find a civilization in history that survived while a minority continued to impose its unpopular will on a majority.

This will be righted sooner rather than later. It won’t be clean and it won’t be civil. We brought it on ourselves.

The Supreme Court ruling striking down Roe v. Wade is a religious ruling that imposes Catholic belief on all U.S. citizens. It clears the way for government, rather than doctors, to practice medicine.

There are many various faiths that allow abortions. It's the catholic faith that does not allow it under any circumstance, in fact, when therre was a decision between saving the life of the mother vs the baby, the RCC let the mother die. Leaving her other children at home and the infant motherless. This happend a while ago in Ireland when an Indian woman had an ectopic pregnany and tried to get it aborted in a Catholic hospital. They let her die rather than perform the life-saving medical procedure. The husband sued the hospital and won.

Judicial Review isn’t in the original text of the constitution. Perhaps the Supreme Court shouldn’t be allowed to use that tactic. In Clarence Thomas’ originalist interpretation of the constitution, would interracial marriage be allowed? In fact, he wouldn’t even be allowed to own property; he would BE property. Does he want to go back there? Let the states decide? This country has seen far darker times in its recent past because of the original text in the constitution. Be careful what you wish for, Justice Thomas. You’re not so above the fray as you think you are.

Here is what the gobshites are saying re: yesterday's ruling on R v W:

PETER……EVEN I AM STUNNED AT WHAT THAT IDIOT BIDEN JUST SAID IN HIS ‘ANNOUNCEMENT’.

HE AND PELOSI ARE BOTH THREATENING THE NOVEMBER MIDTERMS….’VOTE FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS….’

“THIS FALL ROE IS ON THE BALLOT”….. “LIBERTY AND EQUALITY ARE ON THE BALLOT”
and every network carried his talk.

‘THIS FALL, YOU MUST ELECT MORE PRO ABORTION POLITICIANS”….really?

He talked about how women will have to carry children from rapists, children conceived through incest…(how many?)

“The court has literally taken our country back 150 years”

‘THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER……….” (z:”HERE’S THE BEST PART, FOLKS):

‘CONGRESS MUST RESTORE ROE V WADE THROUGH FEDERAL LAW!’

HE GOT COMPLETELY LOST IN THE TELEPROMPTER AT ONE POINT…STUMBLED AND STUTTERED, THEN LOOKED DOWN AND GOT EMOTIONAL, AS IF THAT EMOTION WAS WHAT PREVENTED HIM FROM READING…….VERY CLEVER.

Next step? Could it be removing all non Catholics from the US? Or maybe enslaving them? Off to Tibet is beginning to make viable sense.

Really, the desire of the con religionists to lable all who do not share their own reified religous dogma as ""others to be controlled by them" are pushing the nation to Civil War Redo.

It's time to move on. The world is wide and wondrous. Why stay in a shithole of authoritarianism? And that folks is where the GQP and the Scotus is moving us in the direction of.

L said...

There is nothing in the Constitution, in particular interest the 14th Amendment, that states abortion is legal, a woman's right, or any other such statement. People do not want a big government so all SCOTUS did is give the rights to have or not to have - limitations in other cases back to where it should have been in the first place, the state. All the whining and crying and lying is rubbish. Women want abortions, how about birth control, men using condoms, or here is a novel idea -- live morally and abstain from sex until married. All life is valuable - even in the womb.

When the GQP and the evangelical religionists get back in power boom, birth control, GONE ws well.

Damn the current scotus.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Elizabeth, you've not considered or taken into account rape victims. Women and girls cannot "plan" when they'll be raped:

1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted).

From 2009-2013, Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that, 63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse.

A majority of child victims are 12-17. Of victims under the age of 18:

34% of victims of sexual assault and rape are under age 12, and 66% of victims of sexual assault and rape are age 12-17

Girls and women should not be forced to carry their rapists' pregnancies.

Ectopic pregnancies can be fatal unless the girl or woman is given immediate medical attention and access to an abortion. They're not that rare, I had two women friends in my lifetime experience an ectopic pregnancy.

Finally, not everyone is religious and even sincere religious people, other than militant Christians, believe it is a girl or woman's choice whether or not to continue a pregnancy. The Jewish religion, for example, does NOT prohibit abortion, as is the same for many Protestant religions. Abortion is permitted under certain circumstances in many other world religions.

Religion is what drove this draconian change in a girl and woman's right to choose, NOT any Constitutional arguments, IMO.

The 10th Amendment would cover the fact that there's nothing in the Constitution about abortion (even though abortion was practiced without prohibition in Colonial times by Puritan Christians.)

What changed? Did Scripture change from Christian Puritan Colonial days? I thought Scripture was immutable.

In any event, Elizabeth, we live in the 21st century, not the 17th, and not everyone is religious or follows your religion. Wanting folks to live under the rules of one religion is what happens in a theocracy, y'know, like Afghanistan and Iran.

“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..." --John Adams, 2nd POTUS and a Christian

As to your suggestion for birth control? Justice Clarence Thomas is going after that as well. He stated so in his opinion overturning R v W. His and his associate justices' ruling to "leave it to the states" does not take into effect poor girls, women, and people of color who are unable to travel to other states for reproductive rights and to purchase birth control, should his draconian ideas of leaving the sale of birth control products to the states.

IMO, this is a religious ruling to punish the autonomy of women. This was settled law -- 50 years of settled law. "Sending it back to the states" is not going to quell what the six religionists on the SCOTUS released.

We, who believe in women's autonomy and ownership of her own body, already have plans for helping our sisters who now find themselves in a country that forces a girl and woman to continue a pregnancy. It's barbaric.

I would believe what appears to be a sincere statement from you on abortion if you also felt as passionate about babies and children being slaughtered by guns.

Firearms are now the leading cause of death for children in the United States.

Ms. Shaw, You presented a rational explanation of your opinion on abortion and it is one that I agree with. The problem with most things currently going on in this country is there is no such thing as compromise. The wacko right will only accept their point of view and the loony left demands their view be upheld or they will burn your house down. Compromise is a forgotten skill and even abortion laws can have reasonable compromises. I objected to abortion being used as birth control but many other reasons I support.

I do disagree with your firearms statement because firearms have never killed anyone, it is the person behind it and that is what we need help with. Mentally unstable people will always find a way.

Fed Up in Rutland said...

The same people who say "don't have sex and you won't get pregnant," believe in a religion where a young girl got pregnant without having sex.

That is irrational and yet millions and millions of people believe it and want to impose those irrational beliefs on the rest of us rational Americans.

When the religionists feel they've "won the day" perhaps they will reintroduce some form of "modern day witch trials".

As we race to become a backford looking nation. Thanks to cons and religionists.

skud: "The wacko right will only accept their point of view and the loony left demands their view be upheld or they will burn your house down."

Just a reminder to you. It was the Trumpublicans that attacked, defaced, and desecrated the U.S. Capitol on J6 because they couldn't accept that Trump lost the election and fell for his and his lieutenants' lies.

The "Left" demonstrated against the SCOTUS's R v W ruling this weekend. No one's house was burned down. Check your prejudices, they're on display.

As for your firearms statement, please understand this: We have the highest number of firearm deaths in the civilized world, and we have the most number of firearms (approx. 400 thousand) in circulation in the civilized world. In this case, correlation is causation.

Japan, for example, does not allow personal firearm ownership except in rare, rare cases.

Number of deaths in Japan from recent stats? Three. Japan's population is about a third of ours.

Japan has mental health problems, just like every other country. AFAIK, no schools have been shot up by 18 year old kids with mental health problems.

We are an idiot country that allows AR-15s and other similar weapons to be sold to children.

To pretend this is normal is madness. America is not the country I grew up in. It has devolved into a merciless, selfish, dystopian nation run by a tyrannical proto-fascist minority.

I am fortunate I live in Blue Massachusetts that is headed by a sane Republican governor who protects women's rights, not a minority religious cabal's.

I voted for Charlie Baker and am sorry he's not running again. Why isn't he? Because the Trumpublican Party in Massachusetts is running a Trumper against Baker in the primary, and Baker knows he'll lose the primary because the once sane Republican Party of Mass. has metastasized into Trumpublican.

The nuts in the Mass. Trumpublican Party would rather lose the Republican governorship and lieutenant governorship than run a sane Republican, Charlie Baker. They'll get swamped in the coming gubernatorial election, since Massachusetts (the smartest state in the Union, BTW) will NOT go for a Trumpublican to run the state. So, that means it is more than likely that Maura Healy, our current very, very popular and capable AG who won the Democratic nomination to run against the Trumper, will win, and we'll have a Democratic legislature and governor. Not a good idea!

This is another example of Republicans eating their own for the twice-impeached, criminal Trump.

Insane!

And we can thank the insane Trumpers for that!

Re: "Elizabeth" upthread:

The majority of pro life women I've tried to talk to are typically very religious, very sheltered, upper middle class, and overwhelmingly white. They've been able to skirt any form of hardship and have never endured trauma. Daddy to hubby to death.

Don't know about "Elizabeth," but that's my experience with religious women and their stance Re: abortion.

'Shaw Kenawe' upthread:

I was speaking to abortions involving those of inconvenience, not being able to afford a baby vs perhaps giving birth and putting up for adoption. I do believe women who have been raped, violated in any way, or are medically deemed to need an abortion do have that right as human beings. I was speaking above to only women who have abortions after abortion because they do not use birth control and are just careless.

L said...

Paula, I do not know who you know but that is not my experience as a white woman. I know many white women who are living lower-middle-class to middle-class, myself included, and know nothing of what you speak.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Elizabeth: "I was speaking above to only women who have abortions after abortion because they do not use birth control and are just careless."

The problem with that is how do you or anyone know how many abortions a girl or woman has and for what reasons? Do you expect the state to cross-examine every girl or woman who seeks one? I've known women whose pregnancies (yes, plural) became dangerous in the 5th month and it was either the mother or the fetus. This happened more than once to a friend of mine, who finally had to admit pregnancies endangered her life. We can't possibly know why and how often a woman has an abortion without interfering in her most private life. That's why it should be a decision left to the woman, her doctor, and her partner, if there is one.

At least we agree on rape/incest, and medical emergencies. That's something.

Paula said...

As I said, that was my experience, and I know that doesn't mean it's everyone's experience.

I also know people have strong religious beliefs about abortion and the sanctity of life. But its hard for me to believe that when we know that the leading cause of death for children in this country is firearms, and I don't see religious people getting upset about that and marching to stop it. It seems to me that religious people are selective on who and what they consider is an offense to their god! It seems to match what offends them.

I read this today:

"To understand the gravity of what is at stake, one need only turn to the Supreme Court’s own recent history. In 2016, Justice Stephen Breyer noted in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, women are 14 times more likely to die by carrying a pregnancy to term than by having an abortion. The United States bears the chilling distinction of being the most dangerous place in the industrialized world to give birth, ranking 55th overall in the world."

Most people are ignorant about this and as long as it doesn't concern them or their mothers, daughters, sisters, nieces, they don't care!
