Trump faces backlash over reports US navy carrier could be named after him instead of Black war hero
Sources say US navy is working to rename carrier originally planned to honor second world war sailor Doris Miller
For his extraordinary bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross—making him the first African American to ever receive it—presented to him by Admiral Chester Nimitz on May 27, 1942
The US navy had previously announced that the carrier under construction would be called the USS Doris Miller, in tribute to a sailor celebrated for his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor in the second world war.
But the navy is now working to rename the carrier, CNN reported, citing three sources familiar with internal discussions. Two of those sources said there have been conversations about renaming it to honor Trump, according to the network.
“This is a slap in the face to every war hero and every service member who has worn the uniform,” said Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP civil rights group. “Doris Miller earned his place in American history through courage, sacrifice, and service,” added Johnson. “Donald Trump only wants to serve himself.”

Neither Trump nor anyone in the Trump family going back two generations ever served this country in the armed forces.
Trump, himself, avoided serving in Vietnam by claiming he had bone spurs.
If he had any self-respect (he doesn't; he has only self-love) he would NEVER propose or ask to replace a true American hero's name with his. It is indecent, disrespectful, and foul.
It is beyond disgusting. It plays into Trump's insatiable need to see his criminal name everywhere.
And to be sure, Trump and his sycophants seek to replace Miller's name with Trump's -- a convicted felon and adjudicated sexual assaulter/rapist.
Every person who is serving or ever served our country should strongly object to this pandering to the draft dodger who called those who served and died for their country, "suckers and losers."
My family had several men who served in the US Navy in WWII, and my own grandson served for 10 years.
I am disgusted by this insult to them and any American who served his/her country.

Typical trump. Just when you think he's hit bottom he finds a new low. And so, under trump America has found the bottomless pit.
I'm not sure even -FJ will defend this one. Surely Skud will not. And honestly, I believe if Geeez or the former Marines and sailors there actually see this, which they won't because it'll never be on Fox News, even they'd be aghast.
But hey, that's our Navy thses days, under the leadership of Sec Def Hegseth.
They probably saw the choice of Miller, no relation, as a DEI hire.
Is that you, Dave M. ?
Does anyone know if there is a federal law against naming anything owned or supported by the federal government after a convicted felon and adjudicated SA/ rapist?
I don't know, but if there isn't there should be.
Yes Shaw... I keep getting booted out of Google...
No specific laws Shaw...
And the Confederate Navy is reborn.
Correct, Dave. I looked it up. So at this moment in our nation's history, a man who never served in the military and who is a convicted felon and adjudicated sexual assaulter/rapist president (who actually is on audio tape bragging about sexually assaulting women, because he's a star) can put pressure on his Secretary of Defense, Hegseth, to replace an American military hero's name for a naval carrier with Trump's. And there's no federal law to prevent this.
There is, however, decency, and a sense of shame, both of which neither Trump nor Hegseth possess.
And every day Trump and his courtiers add to our national shame.
One last thing:
Can anyone, ANYONE, imagine the exploding Trumpublican heads if former President Obama did this? To a Black hero?
Another example of white, convicted felon privilege.
