"WANDA SYKES' JOKE IS BAD! BAD! BAD! TORTURING? NOT SO MUCH.

I had never heard of Wanda Sykes until she appeared at the Correspondents' Dinner and made crude remarks about Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh's fans fell over themselves trying to outdo each others' indignation over her tasteless remarks. It's really hilarious to observe these hypocrites fall apart over a Limbaugh-like crass joke, but have only good things to say about torture and how patriotic it is for America to promote it.

And yet, there was barely a ripple of indignation when the then Prez Bush made wisecracks about "where did the WoMDs go?" while America's sons and daughters were fighting and dying...
Wanda Sykes is a comedienne; sometimes funny, sometimes not so much -- she is NOT a world leader. The full context of the "Rush is the the 20th highjacker" part of the joke I didn't really find offensive or even that controversial. The part about kidney failure wasn't very funny.
Waterboarding Rush sounds reasonable to me since he's such a huge supporter of the practice.
In retrospect, with all the comedians in this country, surely they could have made a better choice.

Dearest Debbie,

You've obviously stumbled into the wrong blog.

I posted nothing about WMDs, Bush, Nixon, etc.

Debbie typed:

"I was one of those America's sons or daughters who were fighting for our Countries safety."

We thank you for that

Debbie typed:

"And if you are so interested in the American sons and daughters who are out there fighting and dying, then you should approve of someones (anyone’s) right to their opinion."

Exactly, Debbie! And Wanda Sykes gave her opinion! See?! You agree that she AND Boss Limbaugh have a right to their opinions!

We agree! mirabile dictu!

Debbie typed:

"YES, In retrospect, with all the comedians in this country, surely they could have made a better choice. I guess they could have indeed! Please think about that."

Oh I do, Debbie, I do. Please keep in mind that the White House and Mr. Obama had nothing to do with chosing Ms. Sykes. It was the Correspondents' choice.

Thank you for your opinion and coming here to comment.

Shaw,

Allow me to hip you to the rules:

1. it's never OK to make fun of Republicans -- ever.
2. it's always OK to make fun of Democrats, minorities, gays and foreigners -- as long a conservative is doing it.
3. Rush Limbaugh is the funniest fucker on earth.
4. Wanda Sykes deserves to have her citizenship revoked and put to death.
5. George W. Bush was really elected in 2000 and not installed.
6. Saint Reagan was the second coming of Christ and not an adulterer, B-movie actor
7. Barack Obama was born in Indonesia and is a former drug dealer.

As long as you understand the rules and accept them, your life will be fine.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Thank you, Christopher, for elucidating. I've been so confused, lo, these past 3 months on how to understand the Goopers.

It all makes sense now, and yet, at the same time, feels so surreal.

rockync said...

Debbie, perhaps you need a reading comprehension course:

President Obama is not guilty of bad behavior - Wanda Sykes made the comments all you right wingers are up in arms about.

President Bush was making bad jokes about WMDs while MY SON was over there and I certainly did not appreciate the levity.

Rush Limbaugh's open mouth is disgraceful --

And I'm not a Mister, I'm a female. Perhaps you should stop jumping to baseless conclusions.

We must all look beyond the attempts at humor to the underlying message that begs to be delivered by Wanda and Rush. Although I wish they could be as kind and gentle as Shaw and myself, as evidenced by this particular kid and gentle post,

Christopher: Not sure where you are making up the rest of these, but as for "5. George W. Bush was really elected in 2000 and not installed.", Bush was elected the way his predecessors were: he won enough electoral votes by winning the popular vote in enough states. Come to think of it, his successor got in the same way.

If you want to call the electoral process by which Bush and most of the other Presidents obtain office as some sort of "installation", so be it.

Regarding the 2000 Presidential election, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-to-4 ruling split along ideological lines, stepped in to end the election.

The U.S. Supreme Court, acting as an activist body, inserted itself into the electoral process, reversing the Florida Supreme Court decision of a statewide recount of under votes, and more importantly and chilling for the franchise, made the ruling AFTER Miami-Dade County election officials located at least 7,000 uncounted ballots in a district that happens to be 80% Democratic.

The fix, as they say, was in.

Regardless, I think the fact that several justices who issued bitter dissents accurately characterized the action of the court and I concur.

Justice John Paul Stevens: "One thing is certain, although we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year's presidential election, the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the nation's confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law."

Justice Stephen G. Breyer: "In this highly politicized matter, the appearance of a split decision runs the risk of undermining the public's confidence in the court itself."

When George W. Bush's obit is finally written, the first paragraph attached to his legacy will begin, "became president in a highly disputed set of circumstances......," which is precisely as it should be. Bush's election will always be suspect, disputed and unclean.

Well I'm not a US citizen, so I don't know if I am allowed to have an opinion as I am not from the US and now that I have been classified as a "domestic terrorist" by
the US government (i.e. I am pro-life, Christian, a gun owner, and for immigration control), but Obama is turning out to be every bit of the disaster I feared he would be.
More than a year ago when we first became aware of Obama I said to anyone who would listen ( here in the UK) he could easily be as hopeless as Jimmy Carter.
I stand by that assessment, the lefty media is still too busy slobbering over him to yet see that he is all hype and no substance.
Even his famous oratorical powers fail him when his Teleprompter operator screws up.
Political memories are all too short, the great majority of those who voted for him were under eighteen or not even born when little Jimmy was making a mess of things.
I believe many of the young are now in the process of changing their minds. I predict that Obama will be an even worse President than Carter. He has already made appalling foreign policy errors which will be very dangerous for the US and the rest of the world.
He is dishonest, naive and weak.
The US is a victim of PC 'positive discrimination' with this imbecile in charge. This man reminds me of a hot-air balloon in that when he runs out of gas he'll come crashing down

Shaw Kenawe said...

Huw,

Your opinion of Mr. Obama doesn't matter to me. Please stick to the subject of the post when you come here. Otherwise, I'll just delete your anti-Obama rants. They contribute nothing to the discussion.

Plus, you're misinformed. You are a distinct minority. Only 20% of the American people agree with your negativity and hate-filled assessment of Mr. Obama. IOW, you're with the angry and the malcontents.

Debbie's Choice,

Seriously, you need to get on with your life. Ms. Sykes was chosen by the correspondents who arranged the Correspondents' dinner.

Mr. Obama had nothing to do with her invitation.

There are more important issues to rant over than jokes delivered at a dinner.

Torture.

Now there's an important issue.

Are you for or against it?

dmarks said...

Christopher: The fix (Al Gore overthrowing the actual result) never happened. They counted the votes the way Gore tried to get it to happen. The journalists did this, after the Supreme Court shut down his attempt. And Gore STILL lost, like he did in the previous counts. The US Supreme Court did not take an "activist" role. The Florida court did, in Florida's ignoring actual election law.

Stephens lied. He knew the name of the loser at the time he wrote the comments. Al Gore. But thank you for providing comments from two of the most ideological.

"became president in a highly disputed set of circumstances......"

Disputed, because it is not usual for a sore loser (Gore) to engage in frivolous actions to postpone the inevitable.

Now, I suppose you are one of those who wants Norm Coleman to give up his ballot fight. Of course, because he is in the other party.

Arthurstone said...

Al Gore's actions in 2000 were not 'frivolous'. Florida Election officials engaged in voter fraud. Gore should have pushed harder. Like Coleman has in Minnesota (with far fewer grounds for litigation). Is that a frivolous lawsuit?

I usually don't waste my time on blogs, but this one is real interesting.

So what this fool is saying is that the Wanda Sykes Joke Is Bad, But Torturing is worse. Well isn’t that profound!
It sounds to me like sour grapes. It sounds to me as if she is side-stepping the fact that the Joke was horrendous and she don’t wish to admit it so she’d rather change the subject. Just because someone else does something bad, doesn't mean it's okay to do whatever you want to do. Just because you say that Torturing is terrible, that does not mean that Wanda Big Mouth can empty her toilet at a Whit House corespondents diner.
I love having the ability to "speak my mind" no matter how warped you may think it is. This is what make America the greatest country.
Now, with government executives now calling for the review of people and parties that don't agree with the official government policies or political views bother me. When we allow the government to pass regulations to stifle speech and thought, well, that's the beginning of the end.
Ms. Sykes, is a friggen idiot that should not have been invited there in the first place..And whoever invited here should have their head examined. Why would they choose a filthy mouthed woman (pardon me, comedienne) up at the podium at the White House dinner? Why would you expect anything better from her.
To wish Rush Limbaugh dead in any public forum goes way beyond the "politics of person destruction" to use a politically correct phrase! That kind of humor goes way over the line.
And if that weren't bad enough, we saw the President of the United States laughing out loud! In most public forums that line & a laughing President would have caused the crowd to suddenly go silent with shock! So much for a new Washington ethic! Is this the change a lot of people wanted? I've watched a lot of these White House Press Corps dinners over the years. Never have I seen this kind of behavior!
This sounds more like frat boys at a toga party! Or a roast for Chris Rock!
When she's on late night TV, she starts out funny and ends up filthy & every second word out of her mouth gets bleeped. What idiot thought she might add a touch of class at a White House affair? Her comments about Palin were REALLY disgusting.
For Pete's sake, an idiot like Al Gore even won the Nobel Prize for spinning. Now what does that tell you! You guys wake up.
Now Obama is spending it likes it's water paying off campaign promises.
Those idiots on the left even made a movie about killing Bush. Then, a couple college kids hang a black dummy from a tree and they go to prison?
There are still mental hospitals and sanitariums that isolate people like Wanda Sykes and maybe she should even be put in a straight jacket. They have doctors that calm people down people like her and have talks with them. These people usually go in for a week or so unless they are schizophrenic or have another mental illness.
I feel we have lost the vision of why and how we became this great country. Everyone wants control of the government checkbook spending us "out of business" and supporting lazy useless policies.
Its not only telling the kidney joke, it’s also the laughing at it like Obama did... Did anybody else see the smirk on his face when he was talking about the plane flying over New York City. The guy is plain stupid. No intelligent person would think that she is funny, not even Shaw here... but Obama thought she was hilarious ... She did what she's been doing for the past 15 years...telling filthy and disgusting jokes . Nothing new there! Sorry I didn’t vote for him... You people that keep saying "dish it out but cant take it" have no idea what you are talking about. Not at all. You are the type of mindless followers that Obama has and needs to follow him no matter what!
Y'all keep your head screwed on and stay focused. They all use "slight of hand" movements. Have a nice day people

Voice Of Reason said...

Ms. Shaw you seem to discredit a lot of comments here and defend the likes of Wanda Sykes for thelling those terrible jokes and Obama for laughing at them.
And then you seem to "Cop Out" by saying these comments do not correspond with the subject of your hideous blog. Let me ask you ONE simple question. Simple and directly to the point.
And it does correspond with your blog's subject.

Would you put someone through water boarding to save your child?
If yes, then you have no right to be against water boarding to save someone else's child. If the answer is no, then I would say you were a terrible Mother

Shaw Kenawe said...

Dear Eyes of an Angel:

Please get yours examined. I said that the Sykes joke was in poor taste.

Now for your comparison of Sykes' bad jokes to torture:

There is none.

Torture is inhumane and against the law.

Telling tasteless jokes is not.

That you compare the two is beyond the pale. Please come back when you've got your common sense back.

And get your eyes examined because you obviously cannot see.

Voice of Reason? Really?

Listen: The REASON you and your Gooper friends are on the fringe is because you have absolutely NO reading comprehension skills or are too lazy to do the work.

I did not excuse Ms. Sykes.

You are apparently either to dense to understand plain English, or too lazy to read.

Please don't bother to comment unless you learn to read and respond to what I actually type.

PS. Your hypothetical question is dumb.

Would you have sex with a grizzley she-bear to save your child? If you would, you have no right to be against bestiality. And if you're not willing to have sex with a grizzley she-bear, then you're a terrible father.

Kind and Gentle TRUTH 101, if you're lurking and reading, please know that I am trying, with every gentle fiber of my being, to be gracious to these people, but even kind and gentle people have their limits.

VOR,

I think Shaw is wrong on the issue of how we interrogate the terrorists. I think she plays cute little word games, misdirects and artfully dodges serious discussion on the matter. She can do that; it's her blog.

But I think your analogy is mistaken. As far as I know, Shaw doesn't have any kids yet. But I suspect that once she does, she would do anything to protect them. Waterboarding might be the most gentle tool in her arsenal.

I think she'd do whatever it took, and not lose one minute of sleep afterwards. At the same time, she may well object to similar actions taken on her behalf by her government. To a mother, these are both perfectly reasonable positions.

Voice Of Reason said...

Shaw said: "PS. Your hypothetical question is dumb."

Yes it's dumb TOO YOU!

But not to any Mother that may have a child in harms way!

Thank you for your STUPID answer.
NO, I do not wish to comment any more.
I already found my answer.

The Florida e;ection officials did not commit fraud: they tried their hardest to protect the will of the Florida voters as shown in their actual votes. Both Gore's AND Coleman's efforts are/were frivolous and dumb.

Gordon Scott said...

Uh, Debbie, I think you misunderstood my comment. Shaw might not have a child old enough for service, but she's not anti-military, by a long stretch. She's fairly pro-service, I'd say.

She may well oppose torture, as do I. She and I differ on what constitutes torture. I think she trivializes the arguments of those with whom she disagrees on this issue, but that sort of thing is common in blog debate.

But it is an entirely reasonable thing to hold that our government should not engage in torture under any circumstances. I disagree, and greatly regret the way the left has seized upon this issue as a way to beat up the former administration. This will certainly come back to bite them, as it already has bitten the speaker of the house.

It is also entirely reasonable to believe that Shaw would react coldly, swiftly and viciously toward anyone who threatened her child. I think she would. I would expect nothing less of her.

She may be annoying and exasperating in the blog world. This does not mean she isn't a delightful, honorable and trustworthy person elsewhere, as I believe she is.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Gordon and Debbie,

You know nothing about my private life, and I intend to keep it that way.

You can theorize all you want, but in reality you don't know what you're talking about.

You're projecting--you both believe that the ends justify the means vis-a-vis torture.

All through history, barbarians embraced that justification.

Why then stop at waterboarding?

If you believe torture saves lives, you surely wouldn't object to gouging out someone's eyes, shoving hot pokers us anuses [like the Catholic Church did during the Inquisition], sending electrical shocks to a man's testicles, or hanging someone by his/her thumbs until his/her arms come out of their shoulder sockets.

If torture is what you believe in, then all methods are in play.

Debbie, I have visited your blog and the first thing I wish to say it THANK YOU and YOU FAMILY for your/their service to our country.
I have noticed over the years that Wanda Sykes, Whoopie Goldberg, and the rest of liberal and not funny turds and the talent less liberal dolts who call themselves actors all show their true colors when they attend these press dinners. They are the most bitter and probably sexually frustrated bunch of flotsam and jetsam that ever walked the earth. Even when their side wins big, they are still not satisfied.

It is my sincere belief that this is due to the fact that they are either homos or lesbians lacking a normal satisfying sex life and because they have separated themselves from God, thus going through life without a moral compass or knowing true love. Only morally and ethically bankrupt individuals could have voted for a man like Obama.

Obama is far too dangerous to be laughable. He is as dangerous as other dictators and all the other two-bit tyrants. You and the rest of us better pray like crazy that we still have a free United States by time 2012 rolls around, because at the rate Obama and his cronies are moving, taking over everything, it is doubtful.

Gordon, You may well oppose torture, as do I. Shaw and I also differ on what constitutes torture. As for waterboarding, I would waterboard a terrorist all day long to get any information that may save ONE American life.

sometimes I get the impression there is a contingent on the left which seems to feel we've got folks looking for any/every opportunity to torture ... I would waterboard and yes even kill a thousand terrorists to save one innocent life. ... ESPECIALLY if it meant saving MY daughter from hours of rape and a long agonizing death. You can take that to the bank!

According to Janet Neapolitan my husband who is a returning war veteran, owns a gun and is against abortion (depending on circumstances) - yea he is considered a terrorist threat. I'm not even joking. Check it out for yourself.

Soooo a violent right wing extremist group may just come a knockin to recruit my husband to help carry out their crazy and dangerous plots. Seriously??

pro-lifers, anyone who lost their jobs or are one of the thousands of military veterans who have fought to prevent another 9/11 could be suspect

To be fair - on the other side of the coin of the left wing demos!

cyberattacks and radical "eco-terrorist" groups like Earth Liberation Front, accused of firebombing construction sites, logging companies, car dealerships and food science labs

Soooo if you love puppies maybe you could be recruited by the Animal Liberation Front.

It is ridiculous and offensive to millions of Americans and quite frankly it pisses me off. The government is trying to take our values and beliefs and twist it into possible terrorist activity.

Does this mean that because I don't agree or share the same views with our president that I am a possible terrorist threat? Honestly, everything starts somewhere and to start with these extremes is only the beginning. *sigh*

I'll tell you what I regret Gordon. I regret an administration which abandoned American values and disregarded the law in pursuit of their own political ends. Until the present the US did not, as a matter of official policy, engage in torture. Even during WWII when our nation really was at peril we did not act this way and, in fact, after the hostilities ceased, we punished those who acted did. Japanese were executed for torture.

John Yoo got a new gig.

My kind and gentleness prevents me from understanding what makes anyone think someone else needs to be tortured. I mean, if a guy is walking around after midnight, does that mean he's up to no good and needs to be tortured to find out what he's up to.

Some guy not wearing a seatbelt might have done something else. Torture him to find out?

There are what. 30 million or so people in Iraq. Line them up and torture them just in case.

This other guy is an enemy combatant. Torture him. But they better not torture ours because that's different.
