Yet, I have my doubts that an atheist could get elected president today.

Jerry,

Ron Reagan, Jr., has said he could never run for the presidency because he's an atheist. Ha! The son of the GOP's saintly president would never be elected by his father's groupies!

If you do some reading about A. Lincoln, while he used biblical references and spoke of a creator in many of his speeches, he really, really wasn't religious at all. Everything written by his close friends and associates attest to this.

And yet, he's one of our most revered presidents (outside of Dixie, that is). LOL!

Maybe he was secretly a deist, like the Founding Fathers.

Shaw - What can one say? This is a very serious subject, especially in this day and age.

This post, to put it simply... NAILED it!

Thank you for posting.

In the public interest, may these words from your humble Octopus be fitting for the occasion:

I don't know what the language is,Octo, but here is the Google Translate translation:

This is simply dummy text of mental focus, at the same time I give Jerry Critter Captain Fogg fees as well as some great toil and pain. To Auntie Shaw for a trivial example, physical exercise, our Truth101 Bloggingdino Godlizard dispute that is not from the selection below. Sher's to stop the registry to find fault with in the Rocky will be sent to Nameless Cynic pain page. However, they are the rational Nation is no product, they are in special jewelry needs and easy to Dave is to be welcomed

The only way an atheist could get elected POTUS today is if they pretended they weren't. The same goes for an agnostic. I wouldn't be surprised if we already haven't had atheist presidents in the past. Wouldn't it be something if Lincoln was one?!

The item in the post tries to equate faith with fear. For some people that might be accurate, just as for some people — crackpot crusaders — acting the bully and insisting might makes right equates with patriotism.

I think both notions are off the mark.

RN, I got the post from a friend on facebook. Thanks.

Dear nephew (O)CT(O),

The only Latin I know I learned from attending Catholic Mass in the bad old days, and I have forgotten most of it, except God's telephone number.

"Et cum spiritu tuo"

Jerry,

Thanks for the translation. I thought it was an old Roman recipe for garum!

Malcolm,

Some historians believe Lincoln was an atheist, but had to refer to the creator for political reasons.

S.W.A.,

I think the poster is a good reminder of how fear can change even our most cherised ideals.
