As a breast cancer survivor, I was astonished to read that the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which has supported breast health for women by sponsoring runs, walks, and other fund raising activities, has withdrawn its support from Planned Parenthood.
"Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the country’s best-known and best-funded breast cancer organization. Known for it’s iconic pink ribbon and annual Race for the Cure event, the organization has invested nearly $2 billion in cancer education and research since its founding in 1982.
But today, bowing to political pressure, Komen for the Cure announced that it is severing its partnership with Planned Parenthood and will stop providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants that allow their centers to perform breast exams on women who could not otherwise get them.
Since anti-abortion activists and their Republican allies ratcheted up their crusade against Planned Parenthood last year, they’ve targeted any and all allies of the organization to try to make inroads, including the cancer charity. Planned Parenthood provides birth control, STD testing, and cancer screenings to low-income women.
In a press release Planned Parenthood said it was deeply saddened and disappointed by the decision."
SOURCE
SGK is no longer a charitable organization whose purpose is to educate women on breast health and to support other organization that do the same. SGK has become a political entity that caters to a narrow group of conservatives who insist on withdrawing a very valuable and needed health service because of their personally held beliefs.
I will no longer support anything the SGK organization sponsors; since, through their shameful actions, that organization has shown it is not in the business of saving women's lives, but in conforming to political ideology.
Any contributions that I normally give to SGK will now go to Planned Parenthood.
PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION.
UPDATE:
"The Komen Foundation's public rationale for defunding lifesaving services at Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the country "is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress—a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups."
According to Komen's spokesperson, the charity's new policy bars grants to organizations that are under such investigations. Specifically, Komen has decided to sever financial ties if a grant applicant or any of its affiliates is "currently under a local, state or federal formal investigation for financial or administrative impropriety or fraud."
When the money flows out of Komen to clinics to pay for mammograms and other screenings, Komen has decided to rely on the existence of an "investigation" meritorious or not, politically motivated or not to justify its defunding.
With respect to the money flowing in to Komen?
That's a whole other story.
Take, for example, Bank of America, a Komen "corporate partner":
Bank of America and Susan G. Komen™ are proud to have partnered to bring an end to breast cancer. Like the millions of mothers, daughters, families and friends who have been affected by this disease, we want to work together to put an end to this disease. From February 2012 to May 2015, Bank of America is guaranteeing a minimum of $1,000,000 to Susan G. Komen™ in conjunction with its Pink Ribbon Banking products. Since 2009, Bank of America has contributed more than $2.7 million to Susan G. Komen™ in conjunction with this program.Yes, that's the same Bank of America that is "currently under a local, state or federal formal investigation for financial or administrative impropriety or fraud."

Shaw - I saw this at memeorandum last night. Indeed shameful. Left comment over at SZ as well.
That is crushingly disappointing.
Disgusted. Outraged. Pissed. None of these adjectives suffice.
I've already signed the petition. I hear the Komen Foundation is getting a lot of negative feedback over this. Hopefully with enough pressure they'll change their minds.
Even if they change their minds, I think they've damaged themselves for a long, long time.
Shaw, This is so sad. I realize some people get their dander up over PP but they aren't ALL abortions. They DO help women who don't have the means to quality health care.
Politics can really screw things up for innocent people. That's just...sad. I can't describe it any other way.
Virginia, and its Inquisitor-Governor Bob McDonough in specific, have just passed legislation that will force women to undergo a medically unnecessary ultrasound over their objections, and over the objections of their doctors, before they will be allowed by the STATE to have an abortion.
When you add up the intrusions forced on citizens by Republicans within the past two years alone - new barriers to abortion and women’s healthcare in 35 states, loss of voting rights due to new voter ID laws, and union busting in 26 states - these add up to substantial losses of freedom by millions of citizens. This also represents the imposition of a neo-fascist style government, and that is exactly what these Republicans are - damn Neo-Fascists !!!
Did you now that the more abortions a woman has,the more likley her chnces of getting breast cancer?
If PP was able to raise $400,000 in 24 hours, they have just been lazy and now need to get their money from their supporters and not the federal government.
Plus they do not provide breast screenings for women. All they do is refer them to places who do.
Lisa: "Did you now that the more abortions a woman has,the more likley her chnces of getting breast cancer?"
No. Can you please cite the medical science behind that claim? Thanks.
BTW, This is from the American Cancer Society's website. Do you believe that the ACS is lying?:
Is Abortion Linked to Breast Cancer?
Why is it hard to talk about abortion and breast cancer?
Abortion and breast cancer are both topics that can bring out strong feelings in people. The issue of abortion is often linked to personal and political viewpoints – even without a possible disease connection. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It can be a deadly disease, and one that many women fear.
Linking these 2 topics creates a great deal of emotion and debate. But scientific research studies have not found a cause-and-effect relationship between abortion and breast cancer.
So, again, Lisa, where is your link to the evidence that abortions cause breat cancer? The American Cancer disputes that claim.
"Plus they do not provide breast screenings for women. All they do is refer them to places who do."
Wrong. I have a very close relative who received her breast exams from PP.
I forgot to include this, Lisa:
Abortion–breast cancer hypothesis
From Wikipedia,
The abortion–breast cancer hypothesis posits that induced abortion increases the risk of developing breast cancer.[1] In early pregnancy, levels of estrogen increase, leading to breast growth in preparation for lactation. The hypothesis proposes that if this process is interrupted by an abortion—before full maturity in the third trimester—then more relatively vulnerable immature cells could be left than there were prior to the pregnancy, resulting in a greater potential risk of breast cancer over time. This mechanism was first proposed and explored in rat studies conducted in the 1980s.[2][3][4]
The abortion–breast cancer hypothesis has been the subject of extensive scientific inquiry, and the scientific community has concluded that abortion does not cause breast cancer. This consensus is supported by major medical bodies,[5] including the World Health Organization,[6] the U.S. National Cancer Institute,[7][8] the American Cancer Society,[9] the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists,[10] and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.[11]"
