KNOW YOUR FALLACIES

Over the long Memorial Day weekend, my comment section got tangled up in ad hominem attacks and flame-throwing arguments.

This blog will continue to delete anyone who comes here and personally attacks a commenter.

If you have a position or idea, defend it when someone challenges it.  If you don't know how to do that or if you haven't the talent, learn.  Attacking someone and calling him/her names is troll behavior, and I don't tolerate it.

Differences of opinion are welcome here.  Go after the idea, not the commenter.  Thanks.

The following will help:

Wow, who'da thunk it that a Memorial Day post would engender such vitriol?

Some people come unhinged when their orthodoxy is challenged. I've noticed some of your liberal friends have dropped off since we interlopers starting commenting. I would not blame you for turning this back into a Progressive Tea Room and banning rightwingers. Some people don't want confrontation, they want affirmation.

thumbs up, little one, on this post.

but would add that it is not only the commenters that should abide by this but also the writers of the main posts also. we also need to learn how to put up a good counter argument when a fallacy is used by someone also.

If you defend a blog attacker, don't expect respect from other bloggers. We will see that it is not in his interest to continue to blog, or attack other bloggers. Your liberal tripe is noted. It is also noted that the one you are defending is the biggest abuser of your list and attacks other blogs/bloggers.

Shelia,

I have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not "defending" anyone or anything, except my right to run this blog without having people attack my commenters.

What anyone does on their blog or on other blogs is not my concern.

Amen!

We know you don't care, you just cry. Typical liberal. Has no idea who, or what they are protecting. Why don't you educate yourself.

Sheila, I think Shaw is concerned about people coming here and using inflammatory language towards people, as opposed to ideas.

Think of it like this relating to a potential tax increase...

Good anti-liberal comment...
Many liberals seem to believe that we need to raise taxes to pay for more services. I do not agree with this idea. To me, it [the idea] is stupid.

Bad anti-liberal comment... You are a typical liberal and have no idea who, or what they are protecting. Why don't you educate yourself.

See how this works? Silver and RN, both frequent conservative commenters here seem to understand that.

Others, not so much...

Dave, I think "Shelia" isn't interested in debate, only in coming to blogs and acting disruptive and making incoherent comments.

Thanks for the examples. You got it right.

BTW, the syntax of "Shelia's" comments reminds me of a commenter from some other conservative blogs who calls itself "Aquarians Love to Cuddle."

Wow, I'm sorry I missed it but whatever it was, I agree with Silverfiddle on this. As for "Shiela," I don't know what the eff she's talking about and I seriously doubt that she does either.

That fallacies item is excellent. It would be even better, IMO, if it included the notion that while facts can support opinions, no one's opinions can trump facts.

Rational opinions, based on a logical thought process, in the absent of hard facts provide a guide in unfamiliar waters.

Isn't it funny though how the same set of facts are often interpreted in several ways?

Sorry to hear about the comments section of one of your recent posts. Hopefully, the offending commenters will mind their manners when they come here.

As for "Sheila", I wouldn't be surprised if it was a chronic "Malcontent" or one of his pals.
