No, Mr. "A Worker," the whole point of the display at the N.R.A. show is to have the zombie look EXACTLY like Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, and for the idiots who aimed at it to take pleasure in pretending to assassinate the President of the United States of America.
Now I perfectly understand that not all N.R.A. members are demented gun-happy goons who take pleasure in fantasizing about murdering the President of the United States of America. And I understand that those who engage in this sickening exercise are no better than the jihadists who plan murderous attacks on Americans, but I don't understand the fools who thought this display and use of President Obama's image was something a "freedoms" loving American would be proud of.
Afterall, the meaning is quite clear: Those who took part in shooting at the image were acting out some sort of treasonous fanatasy. Freedoms lovers!
But I suppose having them engage in something as unAmerican, treasonous, hateful, and dimwitted as this is better than having them work out their frustrations by sticking forks in their eyes.
Or is it?

Can anyone imagine how these mentally-deficient 2nd Amendment supporters would have reacted had some liberal group done this to images of Presidents Reagan or Bush? Would they have thought it was all in harmless, good American fun?

Americans have always been comfortable criticizing and yes even demonizing politians and Presidents they disapprove of. It is after all the American way and a protected right.
Having said this, the display of hate, disrespect, sheer lunacy, and sickness evident in this is almost mind numbing. It goes beyond freedom of political discourse and diisent. A sad statement on the NRA specifically, and Americans generally.
And we all know the answer to your closing question.
This shows one of the under-appreciated ways in which freedom of expression is valuable. It allows people like this to reveal themselves for exactly what they are, for everyone to see and record and remember.
Oh, and I wonder what the Secret Service thinks of this. The implications are pretty clear.

It still comes under freedom of expression. But not when a direct threat to a president's life is made, then it becomes a crime.
I've never sanctioned this sort of hateful "freedom of expression" on any president.

Is our society dangerously blurring the lines between reality and fantasy on several levels? I think so. I'm thinking of certain video games, too, as I type in this portion of my comment.

Don't you realize it would have pleased me IMMENSELY, if NO ONE had chosen to take advantage of the opportunity to spew venom?
I don't think you've visited my place very much, but if you had, you would know that no matter WHAT I posted -- be it Bryn Terfel singing Schubert's Schwanengesang, a bit of comic verse, or a sermonette on the evils of Central Planning, etc. -- I was getting an avalanche of hateful, generally idiotic comments, mostly from anonymous individuals who all sounded very much alike, but others as well. The reason for this assault was given as a response to the friendly overtures Ms Shaw and I have made towards one another.
Let's get this much straight: I am NOT going to abandon my feelings of respect and admiration for Ms Shaw, because a bunch of bigots finds it objectionable.
And please remember, if you really do find it irritating, no one is FORCING you or ANYONE ELSE to participate.
I have good reasons for doing what I'm doing, and unless I'm very sadly mistaken, Ms Shaw understands them very well.
On a happier note I was glad you enjoyed the Sunday Poetry blog. I think your attempts at writing verse are a riot. Please don't stop. It's very entertaining.
