Big Meat

Blogger Infidel753 linked to a devastating article in Rolling Stone, and it is, IMO, important for as many people as possible to read it.

Although I'm not a vegetarian, I do not include much red meat in my diet, or much meat at all. But after reading this expose in Rolling Stone, I will find it very difficult to continue my quasi-vegetarian eating habits and not go full vegan.

I was horrified to read about how our food animals are treated--actually tortured, abused in the most horrific manner.  How can food taste good that has been stressed and subjected to this sort of hellish treatment?

And what is more, who would want to eat it?

Why must we lose our humanity in order to feed ourselves?

I urge everyone to read this and ask themselves why we should continue to accept this hideous sort of abuse and slaughter that delivers meat to our tables:

"In its scrutiny of Big Meat – a cartel of corporations that have swallowed family farms, moved the animals indoors to prison-style plants in the middle of rural nowhere, far from the gaze of nervous consumers, and bred their livestock to and past exhaustion – the Humane Society (and outfits like PETA and Mercy for Animals) is performing a service that the federal government can’t, or won’t, render: keeping an eye on the way American meat is grown.

That’s rightfully the job of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but the agency is so short-staffed that it typically only sends inspectors out to slaughterhouses, where they check a small sample of pigs, cows and sheep before they’re put to death. That hour before her end is usually the only time a pig sees a government rep; from the moment she’s born, she’s on her own, spending four or five years in a tiny crate and kept perpetually pregnant and made sick from breathing in her own waste while fed food packed with growth-promoting drugs, and sometimes even garbage. (The word “garbage” isn’t proverbial: Mixed in with the grain can be an assortment of trash, including ground glass from light bulbs, used syringes and the crushed testicles of their young. Very little on a factory farm is ever discarded.) Save the occasional staffer who becomes disgruntled and uploads pictures of factory crimes on Facebook, undercover activists like Juan and Sarah are our only lens into what goes on in those plants – and soon, if Big Meat has its way, we’ll not have even them to set us straight.

A wave of new laws, almost entirely drafted by lawmakers and lobbyists and referred to as “Ag-Gag” bills, are making it illegal to take a farm job undercover; apply for a farm job without disclosing a background as a journalist or animal-rights activist; and hold evidence of animal abuse past 24 to 48 hours before turning it over to authorities.

Since it takes weeks or sometimes months to develop a case – and since groups like HSUS have pledged not to break the law – these bills are stopping watchdogs in their tracks and giving factory farmers free rein behind their walls."

Since we now live in an era where our laws are proposed and written by big corporation lobbyists, and not "the people," it is very likely that passage of the "Ag-Gag" bills will protect the agri-businesses that allow the continued inhumane treatment of our food animals.  This is not acceptable.

What will you do about it?

I've been a near vegetarian for some time. I will eat meat but it's a small part of my diet.

Meat is a cruel, inefficient source of protein and we would all do well to cut way back.

Meanwhile on Faux News Neil Cavuto was covering McDonald's. Not the minimum wage fight, on Faux News?
Health and environmental issues? Not on Faux.

He wanted people to send in a picture of the new McRib.

Have you ever seen a real healthy looking vegan? Anything in moderation is fine and now they even say vitamins are not needed.

If you have never been around a feed lot you would be shocked at the smell and treatment of the animals. The American public will not pay the price for ethical treatment of animals and the family farm is dying.

I would prefer fish and have no idea what a McRib is but I do know it is not a rib.

Protein is an important building block in human development physical. As such it is an important element of tissue and muscle repair. What is important to remember is that it should not be considered a primary energy source for the human body.

Complex Carbohydrates, as in vegetables (leafy green type) is the bodies preferred (and most efficient) form of energy.

Complex Carbohydrates are the most efficient as well as easily converted substrates for the body to use for energy.

The process of breaking down protein in the human digestive system is is more complex and is a more lengthy process.

What actually occurs is much of the excess protein many consume is converted to adipose fat and is stored for future use should it be needed iif starvation circumstances should occur.

Power lifters, bodybuilders, elite athletes of all stripes consume larger amounts of protein not for energy but to repair damaged muscle tissue and to hypertrophy exciting muscle fiber.

For the average non athletic American a diet high in complex carbohydrates, vegetable protein (legumes and beans), fruit, and nuts is all that is necessary for a healthy diet and active lifestyle.

"Big Meat" will never tell you this. It is not in their economic interest to do so.

SInce this article comes from The New York Times -- surely THE LIBERAL BIBLE next to The Nation, Buzzflash, The Daily KOS, MoveOn.org. and The Daily Worker (Does that still exist?), you might be interested in reading it before you plunge off the deep end into the VORTEX of VEGANISM.

Sorry I haven't the skills necessary to post live links.

It's always such a pleasure to see articles about the grimmer, grosser, grimier, more gut-wrenching aspects of life during The Season to be Jolly.

Perhaps I should wish you HAPPY DAYS of DISPARAGEMENT, GLOOM and DOOM! instead of MERRY CHRISTMAS?

I hope you have learned by now that persistent negative thinking exacerbates any tendencies we might to develop or further aggravate dread disease?

Death will come to us all soon enough. We needn't bow down before it, and beg for its intrusion on bended knee.

TT: That is an interesting comment from someone who posted this on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy:

Thank you, Lee, boy!
Your sacrifice may have been made in vain,
because you gave us LBJ, but at least you tried. I'm sure Marina remembers you with deep affection and great pride.
So do we. I can't tell you how much we wish you were with us today now that your country needs you more than ever.

That post clearly states that you are pleased that Lee Harvey Oswald murdered an American president and that you wish that another Lee Harvey Oswald were around to assassinate Mr. Obama, the current president of the United States.

I have no idea what your reasons were for publishing that awful, and my I add, treasonous, post.

In my universe, praising an assassin and wishing for another assassination is something that most normal people would consider aberrant and hideous.

Also, your post about Mrs. Obama, showing her in the most unflattering photos, and labeling the last photo with this:

Me Claimable Ho

suggesting that she is no better than a whore, was, IMO, not something normal folks would consider "humorous."

You have much in your accomplishments to be admired, but those two posts left me wondering about your humanity. Has your devotion to your conservative ideology brought you to the point where you find it necessary to praise assassins and to pine for another murderer to do the same to our current president? And for you to suggest that the First Lady of the United States is worthy of mockery to the point of suggesting that she is a whore?

I'd hoped to find some common ground with conservatives. It's not possible when they engage in sordid and debased commentary such as what I found on your blog.

Talking about the inhuman ways agri-business treats our food animals is not on the same level as praising a presidential assassin and suggesting that our first African-American First Lady is a whore.

We just don't see things the same way.

Les,

Great information from someone who is expert on the subject. Thank you.

FreeThinke, You accused me of lacking good taste when I commented recently on your blog. Not only did you take the time to register your rather curious concerns about my lack of taste, especially given your own questionable character. Additionally you further deleted every comment I because I disagreed with your premise and you felt I was being disagreeable. Laughable given your history of rather cantankerous and occasionally totally classless posts.

Mirrors indeed Mr. FreeThinke.

Wishing you the beat of the Holiday Season and Have a Mery Christmas.

The comment from me @8:43 should be addressed to FT, not TT.

And it should also note that just because the end of December celebrates Xmas, it does not mean everyone has to ignore important matters. The Christmas season has special meaning for certain Xtians. Not everyone. That doesn't mean we can't address serious issues.

Isn't Free Stinke the blogger who had an entire week of "I Hate Shaw Kenawe" on his blog? And he came here to tell you what's good taste at Christmas?

Oh go read Jonathan Swift -- some Restoration Comedy like “‘Tis a Pity She’s a Whore” or “The Rivals” -- or even "The Importance of Being Earnest," -- and then go to take a nice long nap on your bed of rusty nails before eating your customary dinner of ground glass washed down with copious amounts of cheap white vinegar.

From the vituperative, drearily derogatory tone of most articles presented here it sounds like you and your dour, witless, perpetually-pissed-off minions are in desperate need of some bucking up.

There's lots of lovely stuff at my blog this week -- things you might really enjoy. We posted posted the Advent Service from Tirinity College, Cambridge on Sunday, Robert Frost's The Death of the Hired Man -- an eloquent essay on the true meaning of compassion -- yesterday, and today we have Peter Hurford performing the Six Trio Sonatas for Solo Organ of J.S. Bach. Tomorrow, we post "A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas." After that, I'm not sure, but we will very likely include a complete performance of Messiah at Kings College Chapel, and other suitably delectable treats worthy of The Season.

I am honestly concerned for your well-being, Miss Shaw. Your penchant for dwelling on the most aggravating topics and putting the most derogatory spin on most phenomena that strikes you as horrific at worst, and questionable at best is surely having a corrosive effect on your general health.

Perhaps "we are what we eat," as they say, but even more I believe "WE ARE WHAT WE THINK -- and what we CHOOSE to BELIEVE.

Anon@10:38,

Mr. Free Thinke,

I don't understand your criticism of what I choose to post on my blog. No one is forced to come here and read it.

I also don't understand how someone who praised JFK's assassin and wished for America's current president's assassination could possibly tell anyone else that they "...dwell[ing] on the most aggravating topics and put[ting] the most derogatory spin on most phenomena..."

If your explanation is that your blog posts are Swiftian satire, may I gently point out that they entirely missed the mark. Most normal folks don't see humor in the death of a young president, husband, and father, nor in suggesting that Mrs. Obama, our first African-American First Lady, is a "Ho." Nor in labeling Mr. Obama's father an "African savage."

It's a matter of taste, I suppose.

Some have it, and some don't.

There's nothing wrong with my mental health. I don't see any humor in degrading a woman just because you detest her husband, nor is the death of JFK "humorous."

Your ideology has, I'm afraid, blinded you, and because other people don't share that sort tasteless humor, it is not evidence of anyone's mental instability.

I'm sure the music you've posted on your blog is very nice and that people who visit will enjoy it.

I hope you enjoy your holidays.

Mr. FreeThinke, this is precisely your attitude towards anyone who holds a position different than your own.

Frankly sir, from many of your recent comments here and elsewhere I suspect you may be suffering from a bit of emotional trauma in your life.

Try and chill, enjoy the Holiday Season for the glorious time it offers us all. Regardless what ones personal religious may be.

Life would certainly be easier and more structured if EVERYONE thought alike. It would also be much more BORING and the human race would certainly not be as advanced scientifically, artistically, or in any other way as it is.

What you perceive on liberal blogs I perceive to a MUCH greater extent on many conservative blogs, your own being one.

I started my blogging efforts in 2009 as a conservative blogger. Blogging helped me identify more closely my real political identity if you will. I can now say my fiscal conservatism (Classical Liberal) and libertarian social leanings have allowed me to grow in my political thinking. Frankly I am deeply embarrassed by the crap I see on many conservative blogs today (Shaw pointed out a few, but there are hundreds if not thousands more). Why? Because I was once a proud conservative.

Given the garbage I have seen on many conservative sites my focus is more on pointing this out, as well as the BS hyperbole tossed out by some conservatives. I figure it best to clean up ones own backyard before heaping criticism on others backyards.

I'll continue to point out and criticize policy, philosophy etc on the left when I disagree and hypocrisy when I see it. Just as I have done when I disagree with what I view as misguided positions of conservatives.

Hopefully you can/will do the same FreeThinke.

Freethinke, is it possible to tell us why you feel a healthier more sustainable diet wouldn't have a myriad of positive effects on a society?

It's not as if cutting out a portion of meat from the diet means you can't sit down and enjoy a double espresso and chocolate cannoli, enjoy some good conversation while you just let it roll by feeling good that you're finally all shoveled out.

Or maybe it's just an instant hot chocolate. Those of us on the street with snow blowers clear out for the elderly and one gave me a mug of hot chocolate, just instant.
She asked me if I'd like to come inside because it was pretty damned cold.
I said no, I enjoyed just listening to the wind while the chocolate warmed me.

You can find satori in such simple things and you don't have to go ragging on everybody.

FreeThinke said...

Ducky, you know me far too well not to realize many things you pretend not to know. I have an awfully good time and consider myself among the luckiest of men, but it troubles me to see so many hugging to their bosom the moral equivalent of a shovelful of hot coals, as though self-torture were sone high form of VIRTUE.

At my blog I've made a considerable effort to share many items of great cultural, intellectual and aesthetic value not directly related to the ineffably dreary subject of contemporary politics. I try to share many clever but decidedly frivolous items too, that nevertheless demonstrate considerable intelligence, grace, charm and rare good humor.

You know, as well as I -- and so does Miss Shaw -- that our dear readers don't WANT to confront anything pleasant, enriching to our store of knowledge and sensibility, touching to our hearts, or calculated to distract in any way from the grim, sour, perpetually infuriated state of mind to which most bloggers have become addicted.

This has nothing to do with Left v. Right, though it's often couched in those terms. Rage Addiction has replaced Baseball as The National Pastime.

I lay traps for you, and like Pavlov's dogs you run for the bait and grab at it as though it were Home and Mother every single time, while studiously ignoring the many items of charm and educational value close by.

My God! Don't you ever get sick and tired of being sick and tired -- especially about things over which you have no control -- and no hope of gaining control?

Apparently not.

I get vicious little messages all the time -- most of them anonymous -- urging me to "drop all this boring shit" (sic) and join the latest Carnival of Contempt, Spite Fest or Feces Festival. I then get showered with derision because I refuse to do it.

Your focus, dear friends is WHOLLY negative. You have nothing good to say about anything, unless you're heaping praise on some degenerate smart Alec like Stephen Colbert or Bill Maher for being glib, snide, disrespectful and eloquently nasty.

When we offer you BACH, all you really want is SCHLOCK. ;-)

That IS the truth, and believe me you are welcome to as much of the garbage you so adore as you care to scarf down.

I promise not to trouble you again -- especially if you return the compliment and stay away from my blog. That means you, Les.

Dear Mr. Free Thinke,

It is difficult to understand you when you say we spend too much time on nasty blog posts. After all, you yourself have not been exactly shy about letting people know whom you detest and whom you believe are America's enemies.

Why you criticize people who engage in exactly what you deliver on your own blog is a mystery. You've posted nasty invective and scathing insults on ideologies and political entities you dislike.

Here are some examples of your own negativity about topics you choose to discuss on your own blog, and they're not exactly in the category of the blue bird of happiness.

Are you that unaware of what you routinely practice and then harangue others for doing what you do?

It makes no sense that you think it's perfectly fine for you to express your political likes and dislikes and then label others who do the same as engaging in spreading garbage.

You certainly do offer Bach on your blog, but the examples I've given show that you're not above delivering schlock as well.

Our blogs are a catalog of our ideas and opinions, nothing more.

I did complain to you when you insulted Mrs. Obama and when you posted a giddy jingle celebrating the death of JFK.

You most certainly have the right to do what pleases you on your own blog. I should have kept my opinion of those posts to myself.

I wish you a peaceful holiday.

I don't believe that statement is true because I don't believe he is an obama disciple, who as he has admitted, doesn't know the meaning of the truth.

Obama should change his slogan to "If I say it it is a lie because it's the right thing to do""
