The Extreme Religious Right and Its Apocalyptic Rants on Marriage Equality

Less than a week after the SCOTUS ruling that made marriage equality the law of the land, we've seen and heard the apocalyptic predictions from people who've vowed to disobey the law.

Here are some of those unhinged predictions:

Far-Right: Flee America Before God Destroys Us For Gay Marriage!

Todd Starnes: Gay Marriage Ruling Leading To Floods, Tyranny

Alabama Activists Warn Of America’s Destruction, 'Sodomites' Taking Over Education In Wake Of Marriage Decision

Mat Staver: Kindergartners Will Be Forced Into Same-Sex Relationships Following Supreme Court Marriage Decision

The Ten Plagues Of Gay Marriage: Conservatives Warn Of Terrorist Attacks, War And Prison Due To SCOTUS Ruling

Plagues, terrorist attacks, floods, the end of civilization as we know it!

But I have a question for the hysterics on the extreme religious right:  What was God punishing America for when the worst attack on American soil, September 11, 2001, happened?  Some could just as well say it was God's judgement on the SCOTUS's ruling in Bush v. Gore. And I'd ask the same ninnyhammers why God sends destructive, killing tornadoes to mainly southern Bible Belt states? What is he punishing there?

The video below is a perfect metaphor for where this country is on the issue of  LGBT rights and marriage equality:  Young Americans who, by overwhelming majorities (liberal and  conservative), will continue to prevail, and all this End of Everything As We Know It! nonsense will fade away:

Only to be replaced with some other ridiculous faith based apocalyptic predictions over some new non issue issue.

How many times will the predictions fail to come to pass before the faithful finally figure it out?

At least it makes for hilarious comedy. Oh, oh, oh...is god going to strike me dead now?

Not all Christians are against gay marriage:

Episcopalians Vote to Allow Gay Marriage in Churches
by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SALT LAKE CITY — Episcopalians have voted to allow religious weddings for same-sex couples, just days after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide.

The vote came Wednesday in Salt Lake City at the denomination's national assembly. The measure passed by an overwhelming margin in the House of Deputies, the voting body of clergy and lay people at the meeting. The day before, the House of Bishops had approved the resolution, 129-26 with five abstaining.

Reminds me of last fall when the hysterics were sure ebola was going to kill everyone in this country. Wrong then; wrong now.

Anon, I qualified my post by labeling the hysterics as "extreme religious right." I understand that many Christians, Jews, and other religious people support marriage equality.

Religion and Fear seem to go hand in hand. I guess God knows that fear is a powerful way to control people.

I think it's shaping up just how this will play out.

Slowly denominations will permit gay marriage. I expected the Episcopalians to start.
I wouldn't be surprised if some congregations of United Church of Christ followed.
It will take time but it will happen.

I don't expect it in the Roman Catholic Church in my lifetime.
But in defense of the church I think we'll find that Pope Francis played a part in the recent
recognition of Cuba.

Everything human takes time and religion is certainly a human institution.
That little girl just rocks. Younger generations will slowly squeeze out the bigots. It will happen.

Haven't felt so confident in some time.

The Episcopal Church is one of the latter Protestant denominations to embrace same sex marriage. United Church of Christ, Evangelical Lutheran, Presbyterian USA all have done so with other leaving it up to their own congregations. You will NOT hear this from the media or from the religious right. The latter think these denominations are 'merely Protestant' as Pat Robertson declares. So they don't count as Christian. Nevertheless, CHRISTIANS ARE CELEBRATING the legal right to marriage. That is HUGE.

In this controversy, I have steered clear of mischaracterizing people of faith. Some denominations condemn same-sex marriages; while others sanctify it by performing same-sex weddings. Bogus claims are a form of bullying and intimidation, especially this one: The "religious freedom" argument. When two distinct religious denominations -- both on opposite sides of an issue -- are in conflict with each other, there is only one authority. In this case, the Constitution and the wall of separation between church and state.

When "religious freedom" to one group means "intolerance and oppression" to another group, the deciding and over-riding factor is civil liberties, as stated in the 14th Amendment. Yet, Chief Justice Roberts thinks the Constitution does not apply. I find his argument absolutely astonishing when the words on a page are abundantly clear.

Another bogus argument: "Same-sex marriage dishonors the meaning of traditional marriage between a man and a woman." There are cheaters everywhere who dishonor this definition; yet one marriage has nothing to do with another marriage -- broken or open or otherwise. Couples define these relationships for themselves by themselves. Yet voyeurs, demagogues and aspiring despots have never respected privacy.

The authoritarian social-controlling mindset demands everyone to think like them, act like them, dress like them, stink like them, and vote like them. They are a joke that isn’t funny.

It is absolutely correct that not all Christians believe it is against their deeply held religious beliefs to accept gays and lesbians into their churches, and even marry them. There are millions of Christians and other religious groups who do not agree with the evangelicals and crackpots like Huckabee on this issue.

(O)CT(O)PUS's point is well taken: "When 'religious freedom' to one group means 'intolerance and oppression' to another group, the deciding and over-riding factor is civil liberties, as stated in the 14th Amendment."

It’s a bit ironic that the people who are demanding “religious liberty” are insisting that other people surrender their own liberties to conform to theirs.

Dave, thanks for posting that. It was wonderful!

Ah, but you see, the predictions are coming true! Our country embraced gay marriage, and God immediately punished us by making Teh Donald a major figure on our political scene. National-humiliation-wise, what Sodom and Gomorrah suffered was merciful by comparison.

Of course the fallout from his antics is contaminating mainly the Republicans, but God's aim has never been very good -- look at all those hurricanes that hit mostly red states.

I'm not sure if La Trump has a coherent strategy.

Cruz, La Trump, Huckleberry and Carson will split the wingnut vote and allow Jeb or Walker to walk in.
Pretty much a repeat of 2012.

More fun related to the Donald. It seems some of his clothing line at Macy's is actually made by a bunch of people he believes are rapists and drug runners...

More Donald Nonsense

Dave, more evidence that Trump opens his mouth before he engages his brain. He's a diversion for now, and will never be president. It is telling that his bigotry and scurrilous rants are cheered on by so many GOPers. He's very much welcomed in that party, and we should never let the rest of America forget that.

The GOP owns Trump in all his demagoguery and and stupidity.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Ducky, do you think Walker is a serious contender for the nomination? Realistically, can he appeal to Independents and Democrats? He'll need a lot of votes from those people to become president. Besides his Koch-base, will he be able to capture the big electoral vote states?

Dave Miller said...

Walker does not need the big states... With Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio he would only need Florida to basically call it a wrap...
