NYTimes:

Carrier still intends to send 1,300 jobs to Mexico (Mr. Trump said Thursday that more than 1,100 jobs will be saved, but that includes 300 positions that never were scheduled to leave the country). Over all, factory employment in Indiana is down by more than 20 percent since 2000; nationwide, it is down by nearly 30 percent. Stopping the outsourcing of jobs is a worthy goal, but it does not address the underlying trends in technology and public policy that are behind the demise of blue-collar jobs.

It would be naïve to believe that United Technologies — which had estimated it would save $65 million a year by moving the Carrier jobs to Mexico — would give in to Mr. Trump without an expectation of something in return. The State of Indiana has reportedly offered the company $7 million in tax breaks over 10 years to keep the jobs in the state. In addition, Mr. Trump is expected to ease up on his campaign pledge to slap a 35 percent tariff on Carrier air-conditioners imported from Mexico, a nice concession, given that Carrier will still be outsourcing more jobs than it is retaining in the deal.

Trump is a terrible negotiator and he's a maker of awful deals:

"In exchange for allowing United Technologies to continue to offshore more than 1,000 jobs, Trump will reportedly give the company tax and regulatory favors that the corporation has sought. Just a short few months ago, Trump was pledging to force United Technologies to “pay a damn tax.” He was insisting on very steep tariffs for companies like Carrier that left the United States and wanted to sell their foreign-made products back in the United States. Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! How’s that for standing up to corporate greed? How’s that for punishing corporations that shut down in the United States and move abroad?

In essence, United Technologies took Trump hostage and won. And that should send a shock wave of fear through all workers across the country."

The 700,000 per year tax break work out to about 35 cents per hour per saved worker. Clearly there is more to this deal than we are being told.

Many warned the blue collar supporters with caveat emptor. Buyer remorse should be a sight to behold over the next couple three years. Although those with ties to Wall Street should be very happy.

Look, there are jobs staying in the US because of what the Trump/Pence ticket did. I for one doubt that if HRC had been elected, she would have done anything specific about the Carrier workers. So some of them get a better Christmas.

That is a win.

Now we wait and see what else he is going to do. I am rooting for success for his presidency and America, because failure will hurt us all.

Now, as to that meaning of success... I'm guessing mine is a little different than some others.

Minimum skilled manufacturing jobs are not going to increase and not going to come back to this country. Automation, over regulating and dirt cheap labor off shore will continue to replace the no skilled worker in the US.

Maybe there can be a new emphasis on providing technical education in our schools to prepare students to get a skilled job. School vouchers would be a good start to provide access to specialized training. Of course the forward thinking NEA will object but something needs to change because everyone is not college material and how many history or art majors do we need.

Regarding Michelle Obama, I just cant get over her physical and her inner ugliness. She was, and she still is and always will be the bitch that never appreciated the advantages this country afforded her.

it's gonna be a long 4 years.

it's seems like his campaign really was a dream. he's not building a wall or draining the swamp. his word means nothing and worst of all, he might get away with it.

i think he's trying to create a few wall street trillionaires.

Jerry Critter said...

skud, Vouchers (government funded) are a good idea for "providing access to specialized training". HOWEVER, that is not what school vouchers are about. School vouchers are about K thru 12 general education, and gutting public general education. They are not about vocational (specialized) training.

Flying Fig obviously lives in an alternate reality. Our FLOTUS is charming, elegant, very smart and lovely and she's certainly not a mail-order 3rd wife of a rich old lying fool. . .

I have someone helping out at P.E. while I go back and forth to the hospital to see Mr. Shaw Kenawe. I let F.F.'s racist comment stay so that my regular readers can see how deplorable the Trumpanzees are. Hillary Clinton told the truth when she labeled them as such.

Mrs. Obama has been an excellent First Lady, classy, down-to-earth, elegant, and all around fabulous woman.

I'm afraid the incoming third-wife First Lady will never be able to be half as good as Michelle Obama because she doesn't have what it takes. The job of FLOTUS requires more than looking like a centerfold.

skudrunner said...

Really Shaw, because English is not her first language you will make a statement she will be a bad first lady. I did not hear her utter that this is the first time she is proud to be an American.

JC, High Schools can and did provide technical training at one time. Why not voucher students to technical schools as part of their education. I don't believe they are about gutting education but more about providing alternatives. Now gutting the NEA is a plan I would support because they do nothing to improve education just in protecting the incompetent and unmotivated.

skud, please point out where I said anything about Melania's English.

Mrs. Obama said for the first time in her ADULT life she was proud of America. You and every other white privileged person have no effing idea what it is to be black and especially a black woman in our racist country. You don't know one thing about what Mrs. Obama endured as a black woman in this country. She has the right to her experience and to make a statement on it. She was speaking, at that time, about how proud she was that her African-American husband was accepted enough to become president. Coming from a region in this country where white men were able to murder black people with impunity, you should have the decency to give Mrs. Obama some slack on that remark.

As for Mrs. Trump the Third, she is a woman with a billionaire's resources. She's been in this country for 20 years. I would think she would care enough about her adopted country to ask her wealthy billionaire husband to get her a tutor in English so that she could improve it. She does not speak the language well when she's not reading from a text. Have you ever listened to her?

I'm sensitive to people making remarks about English speakers with foreign accents, since my father and mother were both naturalized Americans from Italy. Both of them learned English by going to school and studying the language. An accent is charming, but gross mistakes are not, especially when she'll be expected to speak as FLOTUS on many occasions. From what I've read, it appears Melania isn't that interested in being FLOTUS, because she won't be moving into the WH until her son finishes school in June, at a cost to taxpayers of $1 million a day for secret service protection.

Laughable because the rabid right did nothing but criticize Michelle Obama when she traveled.

Every president-elect moved into the WH in January after his inauguration. It seems the privileged Trump family is intent on changing that as well.

Jerry Critter said...

skud, True, some high schools did provide technical training and I suspect that some still do. But that is not what the currently proposed voucher programs are about. Expanding technical training in high school is a whole different program.

skudrunner said...

Ms Shaw,
Now even I am confused. Are you African or Italian decent because you say I don't know what it is like to grow up as a black female. You may qualify for the female part but you said your parents were Italian.
You are correct, I don't know what it was like for Michelle growing up in a middle class family who had a stay at home mother. I never went to Princeton on a scholarship and Harvard for a law degree and I am not sure you did either.
She lived in Chicago which is not a racist hot bed and was unaffected by the Democratic lead Jim Crowe laws.

Prejudice against language is just another form of racism.

skudrunner said...

A Voucher system would give students the ability to choose where they want to be educated not dictating their school to them
This program would help the poor more than the rich because they could select a better school than might be available in their neighborhood. Vouchers are opposed by the NEA because they see it as a threat to the control over education.

anymouse said...

Wrong. The NEA is opposed (as are millions of us) to vouchers because it further dilutes the monies desperately needed for the public schools and it creates a two tiered educational class system. Nothing at all to do with 'control'. That's yet another of your right wing fantasies, Skid.

Jerry Critter said...

The voucher system only pays part of the cost, and the student has to be accepted into the school. The rich benefit and the poor lose out.

skudrunner said...

Blueballs
I will have to assume you are just being silly. The NEA is a labor union who has no interest in education of the students just protection of the incompetent.
The quality of a school is directly proportional to the involvement of the parents. This has been proven even in poor neighborhoods. Yes money to fund schools is important but there is far to much dedicated to administration and plants that should go to quality teachers and supplies.

Most things will not get better by just throwing money at it, another liberal idea gone bad.
JC, Like most things, it depends on how they are structured as to who benefits.

Jerry Critter said...

skud, I am talking about how they are currently structured.

anymouse said...

No Skid, Not being 'silly', just factual. Your obvious prejudice against the teachers union aside, you've presented nothing more than your opinion all dressed up as if it were fact - a very bad trait of the radical right. I know the right loves to bitch about how much money is 'wasted' in education and, in truth, there is almost certainly far too much waste, but the biggest problem is that funding has been so drastically cut that teachers must buy pencils and paper for the classroom and salaries are frozen from year to year, driving away the some of the best educators to private industry. The ones who stay, and many of them are dedicated and excellent teachers, must scrape by while getting nothing but constant disrespect from right wingers and sanctimonious fools who love to repeat BS they hear on right wing media.
