Another example...

of rabid right wingers shutting down free speech again.

This is proposed on the state level.

It's not protected by the First Amendment, which prohibits the federal government from banning books, as far as I know.

Does anyone know the law on this?

Oklahoma bill gives parents the right to have a book removed from a school library

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma lawmaker wants to give parents the right to compel public school libraries to remove books that contains objectionable content of a sexual nature or addresses sexual preferences or sexual and gender identity.

Under Senate Bill 1142, if just one parent objects to a book it must be removed within 30 days. If it is not, the librarian must be fired and cannot work for any public school for two years. Parents can also collect at least $10,000 per day from school districts if the book is not removed as requested.

"Though both parties have problems with 'political correctness' and the utter misuse of labels and terminology.....the Left has shown the the most egregiously zealous speech controllers lie within their ranks."

Seriously, Banning the Bible, especially the Old Testement, would certainly be MORE than justified. All the violence portrayed and exalted in the "good book" continues to be a reflectiion of what we see regularly today, even in our supposedly "advanced" civilization.

Gotta love those rightwing zealots that truly believe any and everything THEY personally find undesireable should be censored. Like the geniuses of The Dark Ages these idiots are about as enlightgened as a bag of rocks. They really, really, need to stop telling themselvs stories that are lacking in both substance or merit.

What will they do when a parent demands the removal of all books about Christianity, and by Ayn Rand, and by Republican/conservative authors?

Let's see how long it takes them to figure that out.

skudrunner said...

How dare they give parents a voice in their children's education. Their children's education should be controlled by the government and should be under national guidelines. Maybe kamala can be put in charge of this then nothing will be done.

Anon... that I believe is from CI, a pretty down the line libertarian.

He's not necessarily inaccurate in that statement.

The urge to force ideological conformity is pretty strong from both sides.

CI at least admits we see in the direction he leans, rightward, and towards the left.

Here's CI speaking of the former guy's followers, many of whom comment at that site... "the Trump base has utterly lost their collective minds over the election fraud fairy tale and other pursuits of invented victim-hood."

So I cut him a lot of slack.

Dave Dubya answers your snark with a reality check:

"What will they do when a parent demands the removal of all books about Christianity, and by Ayn Rand, and by Republican/conservative authors?

I'll add to what Dave D. stated:

What will those parents do when Muslim/Hindu/Sikh/Rastafarian/Mormon/Buddhist parents demand books with stories about their folklore, culture/religion?

Sure, you want parents to have control over their kids' education. But that means ALL PARENTS having a say in ALL schools. We are no longer just a White Christian country. We have a diverse population with diverse parents.

Parents can counter with their own choices of books against whatever they disagree with in their children's reading assignments. It's called being an involved parent.

The only time I've heard of these complaints is now that the country isn't just one culture/religion, but has a diverse population. So I'm guessing it's not just wanting control over what their children learn, but a matter of a certain population realizing they will no longer be the dominant culture/religion.

The far right and the far left, yes. But the far left does NOT control the Democratic Party, the far right (Trump cultists) controls what was once the Republican Party.

That's the difference.

I would tend to differ from your assumption that the far left doesn't control the democrat party. It was the current resident in the WH that said he was not a socialist and he that he could bring the country together and he did not favor the green new deal. Now he is spending trillions to achieve the far left goals including the green new deal.
Granted the far right has too much say in the policies of the republican party but there are centrists who are heard. Squeaky wheel and all that.

Please name the "centrists" in the Trumpublican Party.

IMO, they don't exist. Any Republican who does not agree with Trump is ousted/primaried from the Trumpublican Party. There are no "centrists" in Trumplandia. There is Trumpism and that's all.

The Trumpublican Party has ostracized Liz Cheney -- the one Republican who saw the attack by Trump cultists on the US Capitol as a serious event -- is in danger of being primaried and cast out completely.

Trumpublicans will not tolerate ANYONE who doesn't worship Trump and who doesn't believe the election was stolen. To this day, Trump himself is still bleating about it.

As a former, and PROUDLY SO, former republican and Vice Chair of my former town Republican Committee in the 80's I can say Shaw that you are absoltely correct in your view.

Skud said... "Granted the far right has too much say in the policies of the republican party but there are centrists who are heard.

Who would those centrists be Skud?

As far as the progressives controlling the Dems, how do you explain Sinema, Manchin, Tester, Kaine, Hickenlooper and more?

Most of them at times have been openly critical of Biden, the leftward lurch of the party and have advocated for more "conservative" or centrist parties. They've even advanced legislation.

Who among the current GOP has openly defied the Trump wing of the party to be labeled a centrist? Who among the GOP has openly spoke of courting Democratic voters? Who in the GOP derailed the big GOP tax cuts of the Bush Admin?

Because whether you acknowledge it or not, the progressives are a wing of the Dems, not a feature.

The Trumpists are a feature if the GOP.

We MOCK him.

Oh Bix, Bix, Bix...

We'll enter into real dialogue anytime, but you've got to post something understandable. And this, which you yourself posted, un-repairedzble isn't it. That word was in an attempt you made to insult progressives.

And now you're claiming victimhood because you were insulted?

That's rich... even for a right wing extremist.

Happy New Year though...

OBSERVATION:

I watch a lot of FOX…I like it. I have observed that almost ALL the conservatives from around the country who they interview (experts, governors, congressmen, etc.)…about the border, or crime, or whatever………..OFTEN say “God bless you” when they’re signing off with the host. The FOX hosts almost always say it back.
