Republicans have decided that the guy whose organization, the Trump Organization, was found guilty on all 17 counts of corruption;
*the guy who cheated on his first wife with his second wife and who then cheated on his second wife with his third wife and who had sex with a porn star while said third wife was pregnant with his 5th child;
*the guy whose Big Lie incited an insurrection against his own government;
*the guy who said his own vice president deserved to be hanged;
*the guy who stole top secret government documents and lied about it;
*the guy who had dinner at his home with a man who said he loved Hitler and with a white supremacist;
*the guy who called for the "termination" of the Constitution so that he could be "reinstalled" in the office of the presidency, which he overwhelmingly lost in 2020 --
That guy is the person that Republicans have decided would be a great representative of Republican values and a shining example of democracy for the rest of the free world.
Not one GOP Senator nor Representative has called for Donald J. Trump to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
So we can only assume that Republicans are on board for Trump to be the front-runner for the Republican Party.
And that, my friends, defines what the GOP stands for:
Lying, cheating, fraud, anarchy, venality, and hatred of our founding document, the US Constitution.

With any luck the nation will be playing TAPS for the gop soon. Before it succeeds in finally destroying our democractic republic.
The gop leadership is a tribe to make a decent honorable person want to puke.
And all those are just for starters.
They are authoritarians, willing to do anything to hold power.
The US crossed the line into party-sanctioned domestic political violence on January 6th 2021.
It started with Trump’s Big Lie. Then, “You’re very special. We love you.”
When the president isn’t convicted by impeachment for inciting and praising his insurrectionist mob after they terrorized Congress, threatened his own VP with hanging, and beat over 100 cops bloody, you have party-sanctioned political violence. It’s not up for debate. A political party that would not at the very least convict that person so he couldn’t hold office again essentially condoned it.
When the same thug-praising fascist is also excused for stealing secret documents after losing the election, they have proven they are accomplices.
Most Republicans will ignore it, and a few may decry Trump's latest seditious treachery, but we know damn well they would overwhelmingly vote for him for a second term.
He really could still shoot someone on 5th Ave. and keep his loyal cult.
He’s still capable of inflicting more damage and instability.
The US is at a critical fork in the road.
The rule of law must prevail. Trump must be indicted, convicted and sentenced.
If not, he will have succeeded in shredding the Constitution.
We may see Trump finally meet justice. But it's just one major battle.
The struggle against fascism is well into the 21st Century.
It will be our longest war.
At least we know what the biden administration stands for. We only support something if the optics are good and we will choose what American we will work to free. It is all about the politics and the current administration got played by a person he says he doesn't like as the fiddle plays in the background. Hate trump all you wan but the current administration is just a threat to our security.
skudrunner
You should try doing some research before you come here and complain about what this administration does.
To my knowledge, you were completely SILENT when this happened during the Trump administration:
In late 2018, Trump released Abdul Ghani Baradar, one of the top leaders of the murderous Taliban, along with 5000 other Taliban fighters, in exchange for nobody.
So I think you should have remained quiet on the Griner exchange. It's amusingly clear to me and others that you only complain when a Democratic president makes exchanges.
Also, do you know ANYTHING about Whelan?
"Paul Whelan was court-martialed by the Marine Corps and received a Bad Conduct discharge after being convicted of multiple counts of larceny, dereliction of duty, identity fraud, false statements, and check fraud."
We are not privy to the whole story about Whelan or why he was actually in Russia. So it's best to keep quiet until this plays out.
Whelan's OWN FAMILY praised President Biden's success in freeing Griner. Apparently Whelan's own family knows more about the machinations behind this exchange:
David Whelan, Paul Whelan's brother, said he was happy for Griner and her family.
“It’s great news. Any time an American comes home is wonderful news. I”m so glad for Brittney and Cherelle. It’s a wonderful day,” he told CNN.
In his statement, Whelan said, “I am so glad that Brittney Griner is on her way home. As the family member of a Russian hostage, I can literally only imagine the joy she will have, being reunited with her loved ones, and in time for the holidays.”
IOW, your and other anti-Biden complainers' reaction was a knee-jerk one. Just another chance for you and them to whine, without knowing any details or past history of other exchanges.
Next time, I suggest you read up on these sort of things.
Skud gets his news for radical Right media. He regurgitates them all the time. All he left out was the racist trope of a Black lesbian who "hates America".
Meet Brittney Griner & Marine Paul Whelan. Both Americans. Both were convicted in Russian courts on dubious charges. Both serving multi-year sentences in Russian prison. Brittney hates America Paul served America Guess which one Biden traded a terrorist to free? Benny Johnson, Newsmax
Whelan is imprisoned for suspected espionage. Griner was imprisoned for a THC vape. Of course they were more likely to agree to the release of Griner before Whelan.
The Whelan family: "There is no greater success than for a wrongful detainee to be freed & for them to go home. The Biden Admin made the right decision to bring Ms. Griner home, & to make the deal that was possible, rather than waiting for one that wasn't going to..”
Trump failed to bring Paul Whelan home for more than 2 years. Why has Skud never said "At least we know what the Trump administration stands for"?
It's always more politically correct for the radical Right to demean a Black woman, isn't it? No wonder they need to deny the existence of systemic racism. It's what they're all about.

Mr. Whelan is not a retired Marine. He was court-martialed in 2008 for attempted larceny, false statements, dereliction of duty, and other offenses and received a bad conduct discharge from the Marine Corps.
And the award for the most inane, as well as fictitious comment goes to skud. The both sides are as bad as the other guy.
There is absolutely no similarity between the failed and disgraceful Trump administration and the Biden administration. Not is there any similarity between the now fascist republican party and the democratic party. They have thereir problems, but are not out to destroy our de.ocratic republic. Exactly what Trump and his republican sycophants attempted on J6 2021. And they are still workingto that end.
Also, skud can you explain why Trump, who was a great admirer and pal of Putin, did not secure Whelan's release from Russian prison while he was POTUS? Hmmmm?
More on Whelan:
Whelan traveled to Russia several times from 2006 and maintained an intermittent presence on a Russian language social media website, Vkontakte (VK), where he had approximately 70 contacts. He has studied Russian but communicated online using Google Translate. Whelan supported US President Donald Trump and, after Trump's 2016 election victory, Whelan posted in Russian Президент Трyмп Вперед!! (President Trump Onward!!).
He said in a deposition in 2013 that he holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and an MBA degree. He took courses at Northern Michigan University from fall 1988 to fall 1990 without earning a degree.
Whelan is a citizen of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. His twin brother David ascribed Paul's acquisition of the passports to "probably a genealogical interest as much as anything."
Whelan was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and raised partly in the Ann Arbor area of Michigan where he and his twin brother David graduated from Huron High School in 1988. David said the family had not known Paul had a bad conduct discharge."
All of the above sounds fishy to me.
There are so many questions surrounding this guy Whelan. Citizenship in 4 countries, the court martial & bad conduct discharge. The extra SocSec numbers when caught for larceny. Then what kind of global security company hires this guy after his history. Multiple visits to Russia sketchy.
Fishy or not, Whelen is still in prison, on charges of spying, in Russia.
What people critical of the trade for Griner don't acknowledge is this... what if Russia said you can have Griner or no one, your choice? Should we have walked away from the table?
Perhaps. One could make that argument, but in doing so, must answer that question.
At the end of the day, Russia had all the cards. They make the decision, based solely on the whims of President Putin. So we wish for a better deal, but any day we get an American, any American, out of a foreign prison, is a good day.
At least for me...

Paul Whelan was DISHONORABLY discharged from the Marines.
Per Moe Davis (US Airforce, retired (honorably):
"Most Vets earn an Honorable Discharge. Whelan is in the 1/2 of 1% who are punitively discharged for criminal conduct."
People like the Newsmax dude who wrote the quote above conveniently leave out Whelan's dishonorable discharge. Griner has no "dishonor" attached to her name.
Whelan is a US citizen, but he's also a citizen of THREE other countries.
I wonder about that.
And are the 3 other countries: Canada, UK, and Ireland working along with the US to get Paul Whelan released from prison? Why is this all on the US? Especially since he was dishonorably discharged from the Marines for criminal conduct?
Just wondering.

Does skudrunner know that Paul Whelan was CRIMINALLY discharged from the US Marines?
Does skudrunner know that Griner has no criminal record? And that Russia offered on Griner or no one?
Should the US have left Griner in prison because of that offer?
What does skudrunner have to say about that?
These people should know better, but they don't.

Paul Whelan was dishonorably discharged from the Marines for CRIMINAL CONDUCT! CRIMINAL CONDUCT.
How is that "patriotic?"
Oh, wait. Those same people call Griner an "America hater," for taking a knee, but still defend the MAGAs who attacked the US Capitol and threatened Pence and Pelosi's lives, "patriots."
*shakes head and walks away*
GOP FANTASY: Paul Whelan is a noble member of our military.
REALITY: Paul Whelan was court-martialed and dishonorably discharged for larceny, dereliction(s) of duty, lying, using someone else's social security number, and writing 10 bad checks.

Maybe because I've read and watched too many spy novels and movies, but this Whelan guy's background sounds all too familiar. His disgraced discharge from the military, his ventures in Russia, plus his 4-country citizenship?
As I said. It sounds fishy.
Has anyone shown this to skudrynner?

I would not assume (you know what that stands for) that the whole Republican party is supporting Trump for president in 2024. His star is falling fast and appears to be going nowhere but down. Legal issues are going against Trump with many cases coming to a close soon well before the 2024 elections.
Losing a Democratic Senator to the Independent party means the Senate party split is the same as before the midterm elections. At least we don't have to deal with a Hershal Walker as Senator, but the numbers were way to close to take much satisfaction.

Not one Republican (as far as I know, except for Kinzinger and Cheney who will not be in Congress in 2023 ) has come out and rejected Trump's announcement for the presidency. So their silence means either they're okay with it or they're cowards, too afraid to say anything for fear of upsetting the MAGAs.
I understand that Sinema will caucus with the Dems; but with her, anything can happen.
This is not about trump but about biden being played by vlad. I know that goes against your core beliefs that everything is all about trump and you can't focus on anything else. Whelan is still an American so he does deserve some attention and griner did not take a knee just refused to come out of the locker room until after the national anthem. I'm glad she got out but she is not a hero for bringing dope into a foreign country and then having a mass murderer terrorist traded for her. You think that is acceptable but many don't.
Yes, Whelan deserves to come home, but as other people have said, it was either Griner or no one.
President Biden did the right thing.
But like all the Biden haters, you saw nothing good in this and jumped on it and found bad in it.
That's not everyone's take.
skud says “ I know that goes against your core beliefs that everything is all about trump and you can't focus on anything else.”
If Thing 45 had slid back into the ooze from whence they came no one would be talking about them but they didn’t. They held rallies, denied investigations, took documents, denied taking the documents all while saying if they did take docs then they had a right…. And that’s just the tip of the Trump crap iceberg. They didn’t go quietly into history because the grift is strong with that family, money must flow into their pockets and politics is very lucrative.
It’s not a Thing 45 fixation, it’s a there’s crimes against the American people kind of thing and it’s telling skud, that you aren’t upset. I guess that means you approve of sedition and obstruction.
And if you approve of Thing 45 thus far it means you are solidly in lock step with Thing 45’s base, the Nationalist Christians who are doing their best to convert the secular USA into a Christofascist hell. You really believe everyone must worship and Nationalist Christians do.
I did not see that coming skud. You reveal much inadvertently. Well done you.
Grey One Talks Sass on my phone
According to what I heard on the radio, a Biden official spilled the beans and said Biden was given this choice and he chose to leave this man who has been in a Russian prison since 2018!
Seems the Democrat Media is backtracking and giving cover for Biden. Of course the Democrat cult will accept anything they're told
O. Khalil wrote: "According to what I heard on the radio, a Biden official spilled the beans and said Biden was given this choice and he chose to leave this man who has been in a Russian prison since 2018!"
What you heard on the radio is not evidence. And no "Biden official" would "spill the beans."
Also, Khalil, If Whelan was in a Russian prison since 2018, WHY DIDN'T TRUMP BRING HIM HOME DURING THE 2 YEARS TRUMP WAS STILL IN OFFICE?!
Trump often bragged about how Putin like him and thought he was intelligent. Why didn't Trump use his charms to get Putin to release Whelan?
I'll wait for your answer (which I know will never come.)
"Of course the Democrat cult will accept anything they're told", because O.Khalil "heard it on the radio".
He thinks that makes him an authority on truth now, and entitles him to the final word and judgment.
Sorta like a cult.
And what YOU heard on the radio is Gospel?
And why do you say that I will never answer? Did you think that I was afraid to answer you?
Whelan was accused by the russians of espionage so it must be true and he doesn't deserve to be released so why use political powder to get him released. Griner on the other hand was accused of smuggling illegal drugs in the country and it must not be true just because they found it in her bag. I am sure the fact that she was a professional athlete had nothing to do with it. It made just sense to trade a terrorist for a basketball player.
Since you are an expert on everything biden is he going to bail out the investors of FTX who lost money because of bad management thought to be fraud. After all he is giving billions to a pension fund because of bad management so it just seems right. Union joe is all about not standing by the workers but giving billions of taxpayer money to bail out the unions instead of making they reform.
Grey, All things are trump, got it
O Khalil... according to what I heard on a Podcast, Putin said he'd never let Griner out and Biden tricked him into doing it.
See how easy it is when you cite no sources, no evidence and just say stupid stuff?
Skud, you're incredible... I can't believe you, of all people here, would chastise anyone for going off topic, with your statement...
"This is not about trump but about biden being played by vlad."
Everyday we mention something about anyone in the GOP, but especially Trump, you seem to reflexively bring up Biden or the swell guy. And now today you are upset when it's done to you?
Nice...
Here's why America is struggling... Part 27, from one of the ppl frequenting a conservative blog.
"I’d heard that Whelan had committed offenses….WOW. If the bad conduct was falsifying docs, larceny, etc., where DID he do those things if not in Russia? Sad that none of the news I’VE SEEN has mentioned Whelan’s espionage charges, etc., in regard to the Griner release.
None of the she's seen?
Maybe that's because the truth goes against the narrative of FOX, NewsMax and OAN.
Khalil,
I asked you: "If Whelan was in a Russian prison since 2018, WHY DIDN'T TRUMP BRING HIM HOME DURING THE 2 YEARS TRUMP WAS STILL IN OFFICE?!"
And then wrote that I didn't think you'd answer that.
And you didn't answer.
I did not publish your other comment because you did not provide ANY EVIDENCE for the allegations about Whelan, Griner, and the prisoner swap. You wrote only what you heard. But provided no evidence, therefore, you longer comment does not deserve to be published.
skudrunner wrote: "Whelan was accused by the russians of espionage so it must be true and he doesn't deserve to be released so why use political powder to get him released."
S.K.: Where did you get that information? Or is that your own take on what happened? I've read NOTHING about ANYONE saying the charges of espionage against Whelan are true. Can you provide evidence of that statement?
skudrunner wrote: "Griner on the other hand was accused of smuggling illegal drugs in the country and it must not be true just because they found it in her bag.
S.K.: Obviously you know nothing about the substance she was taking. Do you know what cannabis oil is? What it is used for? That she had a doctor's permission for using it? Of course not. You heard "illegal drugs" and went off on that without knowing what those drugs were. You cannot get high on medical cannabis oil. Taking CBD will not give you an inebriating “high” like THC.
The rest of your comment is just more whining about the Biden administration, which you do every time you come here.
Griner is an American citizen. President Biden got an American citizen out of a Russian prison. That's a good thing.
We'll eventually get Whelan out as well. Interesting, though, Trump had TWO YEARS to get Whelan out, didn't he. And he didn't do it. But you and the rest of the anti-Bidens don't mention that FACT. Why is that? Can you answer?
After all, Trump bragged to the American people that Putin liked him and they got along. Why didn't Trump use his special friendship with Putin to bring home Whelan, an American?
Can you, or any other whiners who'd never even heard of Whelan before this, answer that very pertinent question?
Of course not. Because that would reveal what your real motivations are behind all your whining about the prisoner swap that occurred recently.
Dave M.
That information about Whelan's dishonorable discharge is all over the internet, but the Mother Ship revels in its ignorance and "alternative facts."
I'm not at all surprised that they know nothing about Whelan's dishonor and crimes.
At some point, I hope the US government will bring him home. Or one of his homes. He has 4 passports: American, Canadian, Uk, Irish. Which country does he call home? And why aren't those other countries working for his release as well?
Dave Dubya,
I believe that O. Khalil is an escapee from the abandoned blog "Who's Your Daddy." Lisa's trolls have nowhere to go to spread their lies and rumors. Every day several of them come to my blog's "comment moderation" hoping they'll be published.
The other conservative blogs that we're familiar with won't publish their drivel, and they're very frustrated trolls because of that.
Ms Shaw,
I agree that the CBD oil is not considered a drug in our country but it is in russia so therefore she had illegal drugs right or wrong. Just like her whelen said he was not guilty and you don't believe him but you believe the russian authorities. Whelen was born in canada and most countries allow dual citizenship. I have read he was dishonorably discharged but that doesn't make him a non citizen. I'm glad she got home and biden is wonderful for doing it. Problem is it is all about the optics but something is better than nothing.
Mr. Whelan deserves to come home, I've never said he doesn't.
Statements from actual US Marines have argued that Mr. Whelan should NOT be referred to as a "former marine." These current members of the US Marine Corps are the ones who insist on Mr. Whelan being called an EX-marine who was dishonorably discharged for his criminal behavior.
Also, nowhere in my comments have I written that I believe Whelan is guilty of what the Russians have charged him. You do this all the time, not just with me, but with others here. You assign words to me and them that they never wrote.
True, being dishonorably discharged does not make Whelan a noncitizen, I never implied that either.
The Russian gave Biden a choice: Griner or no one. He chose to bring home an American citizen rather than no one. Period.
Skud... he was dishonorably discharged and you are correct, it does not make him a non citizen. But is does make him an Ex-Marine.
A marine discharged dishonorably is considered, under their rules, an ex marine, so as not to sully the reputations of the force, current or former marines, who served admirably.
To them, it's as if he was never a marine. He is a private citizen.
So in this case, Griner and Whelen have equal status as he has no official military service and when he dies, will not get a flag on his casket either.
So here's the optics... an American citizen, yes, a black, female, basketball playing, medical CBD vaping lesbian with less than 1 gram of hash oil, [1/17th of the amount of coffee in a shot of espresso] is home.
We had a chance to get her and our president took it. I'm glad he did, as I was in April when we brought back former marine Trevor Reed.
Full Stop.
See, it's simple. One less American is in a foreign prison.
Period.
Celebrate. Be happy. Because it's a better day for our country today than it was a week ago.
For those of you who are so interested, let me set the record straight
The Marine Paul Whelen received a "bad conduct discharge" from the Marines in 2008. In terms of severity of punishment, this not a dishonorable discharge..
Thank you for clarifying the record. I did not know there was two kinds of discharges involving crimes/bad behavior, etc.:
Whelan received a "bad conduct discharge" from the Marines in 2008. In terms of severity of punishment, this form of discharge is second to — and distinct from — a dishonorable discharge.
Whelan received what is categorized broadly as a punitive discharge. Specifically, he received a "Bad Conduct Discharge" handed down by a special court martial. As described in a 2008 appeal that was denied, Whelan received this sentence for, among other things, attempted larceny, false statements, and dereliction of duty:
A military judge sitting as a special court martial convicted the appellant [Paul N. Whelan], consistent with his pleas, of attempted larceny, three specifications of dereliction of duty, making a false official statement, wrongfully using another's social security number, and ten specifications of making and uttering checks without having sufficient funds in his account for payment … He was sentenced to 60 days restriction, reduction to pay grade E-4, and a bad-conduct discharge.
Such a punishment generally disqualifies a former Marine from receiving Veterans Affairs benefits. As described in a military justice fact sheet, this is "one of two types of punitive discharges that may be imposed on an enlisted person" and is "less severe than a Dishonorable Discharge." "
SNOPES
"Whelan begged Trump to get him out of Russia. Trump stayed silent.
Today, the most common type of prison in Russia is a “corrective labor colony”, also known as a penal colony. They are notoriously harsh and inhumane.
American Paul Whelan remains imprisoned in Russia. He was sentenced in 2020 to 16 years hard labor on espionage charges. The U.S. maintains Whelan was framed.
Whelan’s family is calling out the President who let him sit there for two years. It’s not President Biden. It’s former President Donald Trump."
Just a Point to set the record straight!
"A Bad Conduct discharge" from the Marines does NOT make him a Bad Person, and CERTAINLY NOT A BAD AMERICAN!
Your DARLING Brittney Griner wasn't exactly what I would call a "GOOD AMERICAN" by ANY STRETCH of the Imagination, and I emphasize the word "ANY".
“Whelan’s family is calling out the President who let him sit there for two years. It’s not President Biden. It’s former President Donald Trump”
Sorry Shaw But that is NOT TRUE!
The truth is that Trump DID NOT WANT TO SWAP Whelan for Bout in 2018 …but he chose not to.Because he didn’t want to Release Bout back to Kill more Americans.
In 2020, Griner called on the WNBA to stop playing the national anthem because of racism and the police brutality sparked by the killing of George Floyd.
James, Jamey, or Jay
J.D.: "A Bad Conduct discharge" from the Marines does NOT make him a Bad Person, and CERTAINLY NOT A BAD AMERICAN!"
S.K. It makes a bad MARINE.
The following are consequences of receiving a BCD:
Forfeit their pay,
Lose rank,
Loss of military benefits,
Not recognized by the federal government as a veteran,
Barred from owning fire arms (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)), and
Must be disclosed if asked when applying for a job.
There is the possibility of receiving some VA medical benefits, but they have to be petitioned for and the matter reviewed by officials at the VA.

She was never convicted of any crime in America. And she's considered one of America's best athletes, winning TWO GOLD MEDALS in the Olympics. That's quite impressive in anyone's estimation, except those who are uncomfortable with anyone's different sexual orientation and color of skin.
Brittney Griner is a fine American and a great, great athlete who brought honor to America.

Yes. That's called freedom of speech, and she had every right under our Constitution (Y'know the Constitution that trump wants to TERMINATE) to protest the extra-judicial killing of George Floyd.
Do you remember people defending the armed mobs who protested the 2020 election and who attacked the US Capitol wanting to HANG MIKE PENCE!

To James, Jamey, Jay: You may have missed the photo of the Tweet put out by Whelan's brother on the right side of my blog saying almost EXACTLY THAT!
It is TRUE.
PS. No more back and forth on this matter.
Griner's release really triggers racists and bigots. What they want is for her to be punished, not freed.
Bout has been locked up for 14 years and had been scheduled for release in August 2029.
He never killed an American.
Jamey is wrong about everything, isn't he?
The funny thing is how you didn’t mention the FACT that the Derps are trying to make it an issue about TRUMP asking why he didn't get him out in his waning days in office while he battled endless investigations and impeachments, of course overlooking the fact IS that Joe Biden was just right there already dealing with Griner and left the marine still there anyway!
Anonymous
Perhaps if Trump hadn't committed so many crimes while in office, he would have been able to concentrate on being a president instead of making excuses and fending off investigations into his criminal activities.
PS EX-Marine. Whelan relinquished the honor of being a FORMER marine or even MARINE when he committed his crimes.
Dave Dubya
"James, Jamey, Jay" seems confused even about his own name.
He's come back to besmirch Griner who, unlike Whelan, never committed any crimes. But that truth escapes "James, Jamey, Jay" because what is at the root of his anger is his bigotry against Griner.
Lest one think al this hostage mess started with Biden, let's see what conservative commentator Max Boot has to say...
"...right-wing commentators who never mentioned Whelan’s ordeal before are suddenly bringing him up to score partisan points. Likewise, Republicans who regularly applauded Trump’s hostage-release deals are expressing concern that, as House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) said, the Griner-for-Bout deal “made us weaker.”
As president, Trump took hostage deals to a whole new level — making them, for the first time, a pillar of U.S. foreign policy rather than a disreputable necessity. He boasted that he was “the greatest hostage negotiator … in the history of the United States,” crassly featured six freed prisoners at the 2020 Republican National Convention, and elevated his chief hostage negotiator (Robert C. O’Brien) to the role of national security adviser.
Trump now has the gall to attack the Griner deal as “one-sided” and a “‘stupid’ and unpatriotic embarrassment,” but he paid a substantial price for many of his own prisoner releases, which involved deals with such unsavory partners as the Taliban, the Iranians and the Houthis in Yemen."
Hypocrisy is something to be proud of in MAGA circles apparently.
Republicans should not be trusted.
