to read this post by an American man who is 95 years old, and who 40% of the American voting public (MAGAs) probably agrees with:
"When I was born in 1928 we had a true democracy.
As I’ve previously mentioned, the erosion of that democracy began when FDR introduced Social Security around 1935 during the Great Depression. Initially it was voluntary and tax deductible, but those gradually disappeared, too.
The final blow was inflicted by LBJ in 1965 with the introduction of Medicare and has gone downhill ever since.
Ergo, we no longer are totally free.
Like the woman visiting from Russia seated next to me a a plane around 1990 said: “What Americans don’t understand is not everyone wants freedom.” Her words still ring in my ears."
S.K:
In 1928, even though women had gained the right to vote with the 19th Amendment that was ratified in August of 1920 (which American women had been fighting for since 1878), several states passed laws that prevented or made it extremely difficult for Black American women (and even Black men who won the right to vote with the 14th Amendment) to be able to exercise that newly won right.
As a privileged white male, the man quoted above, has no idea of how this continued to be an anti-democratic scandal in our history until LBJ passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965, so that those states that still practiced discrimination and prevented people of color from voting, could no longer do so.
But for the man who wrote the above quote, ours was a true democracy for HIM -- a white privileged American male. He was able to vote either because of his birthright or because it was bestowed upon him as soon as he became a US citizen. He had the right to representation, unlike the women who worked and paid taxes but were NOT allowed to vote and enjoy representation. Man Born in 1928 had his rights, and the fact that some Americans did not enjoy those same rights matters not a whit to him.
True Democracy?
Male Born in 1928: "As I’ve previously mentioned, the erosion of that democracy began when FDR introduced Social Security around 1935 during the Great Depression."
S.K:
He believes that keeping American seniors, the disabled, widows, widowers, and children out of poverty through Social Security is somehow an erosion of our democracy. Yes, that's what he wrote. Now, he may have worked hard all his life and made plenty of money for his retirement and resents that he had to pay into the OASDI program (Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance), because he probably believes that everyone has had the same privilege, luck, opportunities, good health, good education, and good income throughout their lives as perhaps he has, so why should he have to pay into a fund that secures benefits for those who were not as fortunate as he was? That's good ole Republican thinking: "I got mine; the hell with you!"
Or, as John Kenneth Galbraith once said: "The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."
Apparently "Male Born in 1928" doesn't believe in being his "brother's keeper."
“Am I my brother’s keeper?” —Followers of Biblical teachings often interpret this story as a reminder that they are, indeed, responsible for the welfare of other people. Someone who is his brother’s keeper looks out for and cares for others, even if they are not actually related to him or her. For example, a person who tries to be a “brother’s keeper” might donate his or her time or resources to help others and will place the needs of others before his or her own.
Man Born in 1928: "The final blow was inflicted by LBJ in 1965 with the introduction of Medicare and has gone downhill ever since. Ergo, we no longer are totally free."

MBin1928 has no idea of how many American lives have been saved through the Medicare and Medicaid programs or how disastrous life would be or would have been without Medicare and Medicaid for millions of Americans. I don't know if he uses Medicare for his health insurance, but I'll guess that without it and its supplemental insurance, reaching the grand old age of 95 would have been unsustainable and costly unless he (and maybe his wife if he has/had one) had perfect health up to now.
Why he thinks securing health coverage for those who paid into the plan their entire life is somehow enslavement is a mystery. Perhaps he believes allowing millions and millions of Americans to become impoverished, homeless, and to die because of the outrageous costs of health care in this country is what true democracy is about? This is what happens in many third world countries. Is this his vision for America, the richest country on the planet?
Does he or any of his fellow MAGAs understand what "...promote the general welfare..." in our Constitution means? I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean to let our less fortunate fellow Americans die from being uninsured and needing health care or having little to no money to live in dignity in their old age.
Man Born in 1928: "Like the woman visiting from Russia seated next to me a a plane around 1990 said: “What Americans don’t understand is not everyone wants freedom.” Her words still ring in my ears."
S.K:
MBin1928 admits the words of a Russian national still resonate with him. Those words: "What Americans don't understand is not everyone wants freedom." MBin1928 doesn't explain why those words "ring in his ears." Does it mean he found them to be profoundly truthful? That those words mean many people are happy to live under oppression? That they don't want freedom?
What is more oppressive than facing old age in abject poverty and chronic illness, or having the widow unable to feed her children and herself? Who believes that our fellow Americans choose that instead of freedom?
Freedom is not having to worry that if one becomes sick, one doesn't lose all he or she has worked for in his/her life. Right now, that is what happens to many Americans who do not have Medicare/Medicaid and are subject to the arbitrary whims of an insurance company whose only interest are the profits from Americans who pay for insurance that often does not cover them when they are catastrophically sick or injured.
Does MBin1928 really believe that contributing to the general welfare so that other Americans (or even he and his loved ones) can live in dignity is a surrender of one's freedoms?
Does MBin1928 really believe that social programs that help the helpless, feed the hungry, and save the lives of the sick and injured is a threat to our democracy and not the guy who has promised to throw anyone in prison who opposed him in the last election and denied that he won in 2020; the same guy with 91 felony indictments and who was found liable for rape?
Does MBin1928 or other MAGAs like him think at all?

Yes, with the survival of the fittest mentality. Reinforced with the I, me, and mine focus.
Opposing forces at play.
Altruism-vs-Self Interest.
Evolving-vs-Regression
Democracy-vs-MAGA
Seeking-vs-Stagnation
The struggle to maintain democratic self rule is really heating up. The authoritarian minded MAGA crowd will continue to push our democratic republic ever closer to the theocratic oligarchy it is looking to install.
Man Born in 1928 sounds like a typical MAGA unhappy about looking out for their fellow Americans!
These types of statements should not surprise Shaw. The changing of America from majority white to majority POC is a culture shock to many.
Add in a pervasive streak throughout many as they age to guard and rever the "good old days" and what do we do? The attitudes we see today, while less vehement, are the same that in the past were openly racist while they argued black people, Italian people, Irish people, Asian people and more, would "fundamentally change" America.
Of course they were right.
America has changed. Some people though are still trying to live in an America that no longer exists and see no reason to be part of helping us move ahead, preferring the road back to the past instead.
Funny how easy it is to determine the 1928 guy is white...
Thinking isn't a value for them. Belief in, and loyalty to, their authoritarian leaders are their "values".
Everyone who disagrees with them is a "commie". This isn't new.
The far right racist brainwashing has been around since the KKK and the "America First" Nazis swarmed into Madison Square Garden before the Second World War.
Yes Dave, America has changed.
Those who long for permanence in all they are attached too, and see their cherished beliefs being evermore challenged, are suffering much emotinal distress. If only they had the ability and capacity to recognize nothing is permenant. Everything is impermanent and is always changing. Until it is no more.
Life is wondrous. As well as challenging. Rolling with the punches as you welcome them is really the only way to assure true lasting happiness. The acceptance of impermanence is a neccessary part of the equation. My only complaint is how damn long it took me before i realizes it :)
Les,
Count yourself lucky you did realize it! Most people never do!
Les,
I'm happy for you taking the path to enlightenment. No doubt your upbringing led you to other places.
I was lucky to be a curious teen with an interest in my father's books. He was a teacher and jazz musician. As a young child I wanted to a Marine aviator. Later I learned to ask questions when my older brother volunteered to go to Vietnam. Soon I opened my eyes and ears to music, literature, and philosophy. By age 16 I was reading books by Alan Watts, Yogi Ramacharaka, Orwell and Aldous Huxley.
Huxley's novel "Island" was the antidote to "1984". It depicted a sane and compassionate society with Buddhist values. A rite of passage was the "Moksha" Medicine Ceremony. A guided psychedelic mushroom experience attaining a transcendent state of enlightenment, liberation, or the Hindu release from the cycle of rebirth.
Anyway, that was what launched my journey, and dare I say my long, strange, trip into the music of the Grateful Dead has been a most colorful and love-filled musical moksha.
What's worse than a dirty hippie? A dancing Deadhead. A most peculiar tribe, spanning the political spectrum from Yippies to Al Franken to Ann Coulter.
Dave and Les,
Change. progress and evolution. What horrors these words must conjure in the paranoid and fevered minds of the radical Right.
Change, progress and evolution have always been the bane of conservatism and authoritarianism, loathed by the corporate, militant fascist and evangelical prongs alike.
Fear and suspicion are more prominent in their amygdalas. Hierarchy, leadership and rank are important to authoritarian leaders and followers.
Early humans needed this segment of a population to survive the dangers of the savannahs and hostile bands of hunters.
This has become an evolutionary blockage in the human brain. It's a mindset obstructing the advancement of knowledge and compassion, while often resorting to aggressive and destructive measures in implementing its idea of order.
This darkness of the human psyche in the authoritarian faction necessitates a continuous balance or containment by the majority.
LOL!
The Social Security Administration just released national wage statistics for 2022, and the figures that they have given us do not paint a pretty picture at all. In particular, we should all be deeply alarmed that the median wage earner brought home just $40,847.18 last year. That breaks down to about $3,400 a month, and that is before taxes. Needless to say, you cannot live a middle class lifestyle in America today on just $3,400 a month before taxes. So in most households more than one person must work, and in many cases more than one person is working multiple jobs....
Previous figures I've seen have shown median worker wages in the $60,000 range. This shows a lot of lost ground.
So much for Bidenomics, and Joe Biden touting all the good he's done for the economy. I guess the price of a hot dog went down a couple cents.
White guy "values". Just ignore them...
@ Les...
So what happened to Huxley's island when the neighboring "oil exploiters" set their eyes on it?
I've been listening to Moby "We Are All Made Of Stars" - just the song on repeat. It seems to help when I get overwhelmed by the actions of those who know better.
As I've learned the only constant is change - at least until everything collapses into entropy but I have a feeling entropy isn't around the corner, but change is all over the place.
Here is my question - what if the separation we see so clearly is a device of evolution? All humans are facing immense changes and what if those who can learn to work with others who don't look exactly like themselves possess the survival skills needed to ensure humans survive whatever is headed our way?
I envy the psychedelic adventures hinted at here. After twenty or thirty years I delved into mushrooms only to find they disagree with my heart issues. To be honest most folks take the drugs to get where I am ALL the freaking time anyway so there is that.
Added note - I've watched the same division in populations all over the world, it's not just an issue in the USA which led me to my evolution hypothesis. Also, didn't say it before but the blog author and commentators here (yes, even skud) are one of my favorite happy places and you were thanked with joy at the feast last Thursday.
@Grey One talks sass... interesting concept on evolution. As i read it i think you're suggesting that people with higher levels of insight, compassion, and consciousness will be the humans of the future. That the coarser, less developed human traits will, through natural selection, be weeded out of society.
Makes plausable sense to me. Reactionaries and conservatives might want to think about evolutionary changes. It could mean the difference between survival and extinction :)
The
@Joe... read the book.
Let'$ look at Joe Con-$ervative'$ Value$, $hall we?
As embodied by his beloved Mendacious Malevolent Messiah, they're the direct OPPOSITE of what they SAY is their religion.
Leave it to the radical right sociopaths like Joe Con to GLOAT over how American workers struggle, and are CHEATED and ABUSED by his precious corporate elites and Republican Party.
Congressional Republicans have voted against raising the minimum wage since 2009. They attempt by all means to destroy any and all attempts by workers to unionize for better pay and working conditions.
So Joe Con delights in huge tax cuts for the rich, abandoning all pretensions of concern for the deficits and debt. He delights in cutting food stamps and healthcare services for the poor, all so his selfish and greedy masters can have more wealth than a person could spend in dozens or even a hundred lifetimes.
He supports Republicans who promise to gut or privatize OUR Social Security and Medicare and KEEP minimum pay as low as they can.
Greed, cruelty and indifference to human suffering are the essence of conservatism, as they take from the poor and give the the rich. These so-called "Christians" are the servants of mammon their Savior condemned.
They are without question the most authoritarian, dishonest, and hateful group of people in our country.
@ Les
Already did. Just reminding you, et al, that such is the path to "extinction", as the evolutionists would call it. Meden agan! :)
@Dave.
Better a little "Authoritarianism" than the Totalitarianism you advocate. As for my "Authoritarian" father, I try and ignore him and do what I want, anyways. It makes all the censorship and brainwashing otherwise, unnecessary. :)
Also Grey One talks sass, i'm intrigued with the work that has been done on psychedelics and the possible benefits relative to expanding the mind's awareness of actual and ultimate reality.
I've not experimented with these substances but i do know someone who has spent time studying plant medicine with Shamans in either Central or South America. I hope to have a discussion at some point with that person.
If folks would simply open their minds to all possibilities and phenomenon, like the unobstructed, unpolluted, and unobscured mind of a 5 year old, our planet and every being living would be far more compassionate, loving, and wiser than we presently are.
Life is wondrous, a magical display of continual change and opportunity if one has the capacity to roll with the punches.
Joe Opined... "The Social Security Administration just released national wage statistics for 2022... we should all be deeply alarmed that the median wage earner brought home just $40,847.18 last year."
We might be alarmed if Joe was accurate. But of course, he's not. He cited the SSA, but his misinformation is quickly shown to be wrong by just accessing the SSA site.
Here's your link Joe to the real numbers of $63,795.00. On top of this, the median household income was quite a bit larger still.
Joe, do you have a link from the SSA to your number?
"The Social Security Administration just released..."
I guess you're Joe today. If you're going to quote mine, it would be helpful to provide a link. It took 30 seconds of my valuable time to trace it to a Monica Showalter posting on an investorshub forum. Her source is 'Economic Collapse blog'. The blog post has no links to actual SSA data. So, I go to SSA and find they publish average incomes, not median. You know the difference? According to the Census Bureau, median income for 2022 was $74,580. I think your source pulled this data from somewhere deep up their ass.
This part of your cut and paste should have raised doubt. " median wage earner brought home just $40,847.18 last year. That breaks down to about $3,400 a month, and that is before taxes. Brought home or take home pay is after taxes.
Your cut and pasting philosophers and charlatans, your links to Youtube videos are nothing more than "appeals to authority", which you should know are logical fallacies. The literal meaning of philosophy is love of wisdom a wise person can usually recognize and apply the truth. You're doing it wrong.
LOL! The "average" is not the "median" Dave. Learn the difference, and its' significance.
Here's the SSA link.
btw - In 2021, BLM stated that the median wage was $45,760... so if it's only 40,847.18 this year, workers have lost about $5k per year since Biden took office.
So, which numbers a right? None of them. BLM and SSA can't even state the same numbers.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median weekly income (including overtime, commission and tips) for full-time workers (excluding those who are self-employed) in America was $1,041 as of the second quarter of 2022. If that rate persists for the entire year, that would equal $54,132 a year.Dec 7, 2022
The 2019 real median earnings of men ($57,456) and women ($47,299) who worked full-time, year-round increased by 2.1 percent and 3.0 percent, respectively
With a 20+% inflation since 2021 it looks like there has been a significant decline in median purchasing power. Multiple jobholders reached 8,137,000 in March, or 5.1% of the total employed population, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's up from close to 7.5 million people during the same period last year, or 4.7% of the total employed population.
So much for Bidenomics, should be called the decline of the middle class.
Leave it to -FJ to defend authoritarians and LIE that we advocate totalitarianism.
This is the true authoritarian personality at work.
Parental authority is a neat deflection from his brand of Trumpian gangster authoritarianism that runs a criminal political enterprise. This is the essence of totalitarianism. Trump uses Hitler's rhetoric against those who hold him accountable at the polls and within the law.
We all know -FJ reveals his authoritarian personality by taking the side of the Trump Cartel and the Big Lie.
He shows us his red hat in his words.
With such a phenomenal amout of i know just because i know coming out of so many varied sources (although one paticular source ideology is prevelant among them) it's probably best to practice and leave obscurations, delusions, and reified beliefs in the basement.
Joe, Thanks for the SSA link. It points to the lies from your earlier cut and paste. They said, " that is before taxes". No. The table is clearly labeled "Median net compensation". You know the difference between net and gross. Second lie. "Previous figures I've seen have shown median worker wages in the $60,000 range". No. They must have "seen" average figures. Third lie, "This shows a lot of lost ground". No. They/you have not even looked at the chart you're referencing. It starts from 1991 ($15,075.94) to 2022 ($40,847.18).
Compare Biden to Trump. Trumps 4 years median net comp went from 31,561.49 to 34,612.04, a gain of roughly $3,000. In 2 years of Biden it went from 34,612.04 to $40,847.18. Let's say, + $6,000.
The numbers don't lie unless now you think they do.
Leave it to -FJ to defend authoritarians and LIE that we advocate totalitarianism.
The proof is in the shadow bans and censorship, Dave.
Good catch on the "net", Craig. As for your imaginary SSA $6,000 increase (which doesn't account for the $5k BLS loss), how much of those increases were pure inflation? And do you really think wages will keep up for the rest of Biden's term?
And as I said before, the numbers reported by the government are all sh*t... and if you compare them to the numbers they'll be reporting 10 years from now, you won't be able to match them to the current table. "Adjustements" will have "had to be made". just like the climate charts that tell us that this is the "hottest" period in US history.... that it was colder back during the "dust bowl" 1930s.
btw - Aren't all those SSA net median wages... "estimated" anyways?
Notes:
a Median net compensation is estimated.
Tinker-tinker-tinker....
"Leave it to -FJ to defend authoritarians and LIE that we advocate totalitarianism."
-FJ's projection: "The proof is in the shadow bans and censorship, Dave."
Yeah, shadow bans are SOOO much more totalitarian than lying about a "stolen election", and sending an angry mob to terrorize Congress, beat cops bloody and attempt to overturn the same election.
Shadow bans are sheer tyranny, but it's just fine to PRAISE seditious thugs with, "We love you. You're very special", ending our history of Constitutional and peaceful transfer of power.
-FJ is still reluctant to show us evidence that Trump beat Biden. Why IS that??
. that it was colder back during the "dust bowl" 1930s.
What are you going on about. You think the the dust bowl was a function of heat?
how much of those increases were pure inflation? And do you really think wages will keep up for the rest of Biden's term?
I don't know and I don't know. What I do know is you posted a pack of lies and tried ti pass it off as a real gotcha.
Aren't all those SSA net median wages... "estimated" anyways?
Jesus H. Christ, Joe. They're the numbers you used to say Bidenomics suck. Which is it?
-FJ is still reluctant to show us evidence that Trump beat Biden. Why IS that??
Just uncensor the data, and I'll re-post it all.
Please, -FJ. We know your Mother Russia has all YOUR data, plus some hotel footage of Trump and guests. But that's in Vlad's private library.
Here's the data that matters:
By all counts, recounts, certifications, courts, and audits:
Joe Biden 51.3%
81,283,361 Popular votes, 306 Electoral
Donald (WAAH! Fraud! Rigged!) Trump 46.8%
74,222,960 Popular votes, 232 Electoral
-FJ really means "Just don't count all the votes for Democrats".
-FJ really means "Just don't count all the votes for Democrats"
Nope. Just don't count the "stuffed" ones.
