SEC DOD Pete Hegseth: “Under the previous administration, we looked like fools. Not anymore.”

Really?

What about this breathtaking incompetence?

Trump officials discussed a secret plan to attack Yemen in a group text chat.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disclosed war plans in an encrypted chat group that included a journalist two hours before U.S. troops launched attacks against the Houthi militia in Yemen, the White House said on Monday, confirming an account in the magazine The Atlantic.

The editor in chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, wrote in an article published on Monday that he was mistakenly added to the text chat on the commercial messaging app Signal.

And here's Trump's response to the breathtaking incompetency:

"I don't know anything about it. I'm not a big fan of The Atlantic. To me it's a magazine that's going out of business. But I know nothing about it. You're saying that they had what?"

He criticized the Atlantic Magazine!

"Zachary B. Wolf of CNN noted that “Trump intentionally hired amateurs for top jobs. This is their most dramatic blunder.” Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) told Brian Tyler Cohen: “My first reaction... was 'what absolute clowns.' Total amateur hour, reckless, dangerous…. [T]his is what happens when you have basically Fox News personalities cosplaying as government officials.” Foreign policy scholar Timothy Snyder posted: “These guys inherited one of the most functional state apparatus in the history of the world and they are inhabiting it like a crack house.”  --H.C.Richardson

"The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans"

U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

By Jeffrey Goldberg editor in chief of The Atlantic

The world found out shortly before 2 p.m. eastern time on March 15 that the United States was bombing Houthi targets across Yemen.

I, however, knew two hours before the first bombs exploded that the attack might be coming. The reason I knew this is that Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, had texted me the war plan at 11:44 a.m. The plan included precise information about weapons packages, targets, and timing.

This is going to require some explaining.

Trump: “I don’t know anything about it.”

If an Army private accidentally texted the details of a classified military operation to a reporter, let alone transmitted any classified information to anyone who was unauthorized over an unsecured device, they’d be charged and likely spend time in Leavenworth.

But it’s Hegseth, so probably not.

Before gets a chance to once again claim this is the fault of Dems for Biden/Harris and more, let me set the record straight.

Skud, in a prior post was speaking of a SCOTUS decision granting immunity to a president for most, if not all crimes he, or she commits while in office...

"We have created a situation where the president can do whatever he wants."

Skud, who is this "we"?

It's not me, Shaw, RN, BB, Dave D or most of the other commenters here. It was you and your MAGA supporting friends. You voted for the party that denied a Dem a legit opportunity to name a SCOTUS judge. You and your MAGA friends enabled Trump, his lies, and his SCOTUS picks to create this situation. And now the president you enabled has put American lives in danger. In danger Skud.

It was you Skud, and the politicians you've supported, voted for and encouraged that caused this. There is no "we" involved here. It's all on you, your friends who support Trump, your friends who vote for a GOP that enables him and you who try everyday to deflect blame and skirt responsibility.

And unless and until you and folks like you get it, that you are the reason this is happening, we'll never move forward.

Never.

Dems have been crappy presidents for sure. But none has ever claimed immunity from prosecution while in office. Never. And none has ever shown such ineptness in running the federal government. And none has ever carelessly shared US war plans like this.

None.

Even Sleepy Joe on his worst day, never destroyed our international security alliances, never put innocent ppl in jail after admitting they committed no crime and never pardoned a single person who "savagely and brutally" beat US Capitol Police Officers. And Sleepy Joe never turned our collective US backs on a Democratic ally fighting an invading Communist army, bent on establishing dictatorial rule.

This is all on you Skud and the people, who like you, enabled his presidency and for the most part, cheer him and his minions on. Each and every day.

You own this Skud. Not us, not we.

Honestly, I'm disgusted.

Very well stated Dave. And most important it is absolutely true.

skud, do you ever meditate? Spend time with the inner you? Attempt to see reality without the distractions of external noise and conditioning? Move beyond the protective agenda of the ego?

I for one skud look forward to hearing your reaction to Dave's accurate remarks. Hopefully you'll meditate on and reflect on the deep truths contained in them.But... not anticipating that.

Hegseth is not fit to be the head of DoD. This is a scandal:

Reporter: Can you share how your information about war plans was shared with a journalist?

Hegseth: So you are talking about a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who has made a profession of peddling hoaxes.

1) ads journalist to group chat with war plans

2) attacks journalist who didn’t ask to be added

Pete Hegseth should resign.

Memo to Hegseth...

Goldberg can show you the text messages. The White House today confirmed that the text messages Goldberg has, appear to be authentic and were reviewing how Goldberg was added to the text message thread.

A text message thread that shared top secret US war plans!

Why are those even being shared via text message?

Dang that VP Harris... it must be all her fault that Trump nominated an idiotic unqualified, sex offender for the position of Sec Def.

Please Skud, -FJ, Joe Con and the rest of you MAGA backers, before you expect any respect at all from us, or maybe even a reply to your coming stupidity, tell us how you would be reacting if this had happened in Sleepy Joe's watch.

Dave Miller said...

From GOP Congressman Don Bacon...

“The unconscionable action was sending this info over non-secure networks... None of this should have been sent on non-secure systems. Russia and China are surely monitoring his unclassified phone.”

And yet it was shared on non secure systems. Why? How? Will anyone lose their jobs?

Sen. John Cornyn from Texas said, “It sounds like a huge screw-up. ... Is there any other way to describe it?”

Clearly even the GOP has a few ppl who see this as bad. Does our president? Does our Sec Def? Does our Nat Sec Advisor? The Homeland Security Sec?

What a clown show.

Shaw Kenawe said...

That silence you hear is the entire Republican Party and propagandists waiting for their talking points to excuse one of the most outrageous national security breeches in modern times by all of the leading idiots of the Trump Admin.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Good luck with that resignation thing. A person has to have moral character to resign. And the leader enough moral character to fire the person if they don't resign.

Remember, we're in Trumplandia now, where everything we thought was moral is immoral, and everything we thought was immoral is moral. I'm quite certain that if Trump could promote Hegseth, he would.

The blind are leading the blind, and 70 million Americans wanted this.

I think this quote from Mz. Z at the Mothership is instructive. It's what they see looking at the world through burnt orange colored glasses.

It’s not like Trump to deflect guilt, so this is curious to me. Oy.

The silence from the "usual crowd" of GOP water carriers is telling - it's the negative space which reveals so much. Oh to be a fly on the wall as the 'great minds' find someone, anyone to scapegoat besides their own selves. Accountability to the MAGA is as water to alkali metals so I imagine the usual methods won't work here/now.

Guess MAGA shoulda/coulda/woulda used the secure services they've accused others of not using.

Dave, came to see if I could add to your post about who is this "We" some speak of and nope, you covered all the bases and made a few points that gave me food for thought. Thanks for the intellectual snack.

The Mother Ship is a microcosm of why Trump was re-elected. They believe a man who is a known liar, cheat, and fraud, and a convicted felon! They ignore or have completely forgotten this remark from him from only a few years ago:

"I don’t take responsibility at all."

That response is to how badly the COVID pandemic was handled by his administration.

The Mother Ship and her sailors are oblivious to any of Trump's moral failings.

What did we expect when Trump appointed a weekend tv-show host, drunk, and sexual assaulter as our Secretary of Defense?

R.D. said...

We’re quickly moving to post-words responses. There simply are no words to convey the horror of this moment. Hegseth, in his ineptitude, his moral rot, his idiocy… you see even these phrasings do no justice to what he did to our nation’s national security.

Resignation? No. Seeing if there is a legitimate way to tie him to violating the Espionage Act is the only way forward. And if the American people can believe that a serious effort will be made to determine if he endangered our national security, as well as the lives of our military and intelligence services, we may then have put one foot forward in rescuing our country from at least one moronic traitor.

Shaw Kenawe said...

We knew Hegseth wasn’t up to this job but he really went about proving how unqualified he is with blistering speed.

This is what a country gets when 77 million MAGA rush out, with their grade 5 comprehension skills, and elect a reality tv show host felon/rapist. Good job Murica. The rest of the world will pay for your monstrous ignorance. We will never forgive or forget. You are no longer part of the global community.

This is what happens when millions of people begin to believe the stories that run on a loop in their head. Which are comprised of their filtered and reified beliefs and egoistic desires. Obscuration and delusion are the defense mechanisms of the ego. MAGA is a culture of exactly that.

Unless America fully wakes up to its national delusions and starts accepting reality we're finished as a democratic free society.

The clock is running. Time is limited.

Heather Cox Richardson:

"Goldberg assumed the chat was fake, some sort of disinformation campaign, although he was concerned when Ratcliffe provided the full name of a CIA operative in this unsecure channel. But on March 14, as Vance, for example, took a strong stand against Europe—“I just hate bailing Europe out again”—and as Hegseth emphasized that their messaging must be that “Biden failed,” Goldberg started to think the chat might be real. Those in the chat talked of finding a way to make Europe pay the costs for the U.S. attack, and of “minimiz[ing] risk to Saudi oil facilities.”

And then, on March 15, the messages told of the forthcoming attack. “I will not quote from this update, or from certain other subsequent texts,” Goldberg writes. “The information contained in them, if they had been read by an adversary of the United States, could conceivably have been used to harm American military and intelligence personnel, particularly in the broader Middle East, Central Command’s area of responsibility. What I will say, in order to illustrate the shocking recklessness of this Signal conversation, is that the Hegseth post contained operational details of forthcoming strikes on Yemen, including information about targets, weapons the U.S. would be deploying, and attack sequencing.”

On the chat, reactions to the military strikes were emojis of a fist, an American flag, fire, praying hands, a flexed bicep, and “Good Job Pete and your team!!,” “Kudos to all…. Really great. God Bless,” and “Great work and effects!”

In the messages, with a reporter on the line, Hegseth promised his colleagues he would “do all we can to enforce 100% OPSEC,” or operations security. In a message to the team outlining the forthcoming attack, Hegseth wrote: “We are currently clean on OPSEC.”

Two hours after Goldberg wrote to the officials on the chat and alerted them to his presence on it by asking questions about it, National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes responded: “The thread is a demonstration of the deep and thoughtful policy coordination between senior officials.”

When asked about the breach, Trump responded: “I don't know anything about it. I'm not a big fan of The Atlantic. To me, it's a magazine that's going out of business. I think it’s not much of a magazine. But I know nothing about it. You're saying that they had what?” There is nothing that the administration could say to make the situation better, but this made it worse. As national security specialist Tom Nichols noted: “If the President is telling the truth and no one’s briefed him about this yet, that’s another story in itself. In any other administration, [the chief of staff] would have been in the Oval [Office] within nanoseconds of learning about something like this.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is evidently going to try to bully his way out of this disaster. When asked about it, he began to yell at a reporter that Goldberg is a “deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who’s made a profession of peddling hoaxes time and time again.” Hegseth looked directly at the camera and said: “Nobody was texting war plans.” But Goldberg has receipts. The chat had “the specific time of a future attack. Specific targets, including human targets…weapons systems…precise detail…a long section on sequencing…. He can say that it wasn’t a war plan, but it was a minute-by-minute accounting of what was about to happen.”

Great reply Dave. I include all Americans as we but it appears that in your mind that is not the case. Does this mean that you own the deaths of 13 Americans killed in Afghanistan, the billions of dollars given to a terrorist organization and selecting the second worst presidential candidate in history. Of course not we all own US mistakes.
Don't forget it was our president who had the FBI spy on parents who attended school board meeting and robbed children of an education for over a year. It was our president who was all about special interest groups and threw the middle class away.
No Dave, what is disgusting is we are such a divided country because of the masses who hate trump and would rather see the country fail than see him succeed.

SKUD: "Does this mean that you own the deaths of 13 Americans killed in Afghanistan,"

S.K.: "According to the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System, which tracks annual casualty data, 65 soldiers died in “hostile action” during the four years of the Trump administration, versus 16 under Biden ."

You've hammered on this for years. But facts are stubborn things. Trump got more US military killed in his 4 years than did Biden. ALL MILITARY DEATHS ARE TRAGEDIES. Why are you trying to make points (wrong points) on these deaths? In fact they were worse under Trump.

SKUD: "...selecting the second worst presidential candidate in history."

S.K.: Former VP Harris was an elected DA for San Francisco; she was elected Attorney General for the State of California; she was elected US Senator from California, and served as vice president of the US. She was eminently qualified for the presidency, having served in all three branches of government. When Trump was elected in 2016, his credentials were: A reality TV host, failed businessman who bankrupted casinos, and a serial adulterer who cheated on all three wives, including his last one, by having a one-night stand with a porn star and a 9 month affair with a former playmate bunny.

SKUD: "Don't forget it was our president who had the FBI spy on parents who attended school board meeting

"On Oct. 4, 2021, Attorney General Merrick Garland sent a five-paragraph memo to the FBI and federal prosecutors acknowledging a "disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence" against school officials. Garland directed the FBI to hold meetings across the country and bring together government leaders to discuss strategies to address those threats.

"While spirited debate about policy matters is protected under our Constitution, that protection does not extend to threats of violence or efforts to intimidate individuals based on their views," Garland wrote.

The memo focused on criminal conduct, not parents’ views about COVID-19 policies or school curriculum."

SKUD: "...and robbed children of an education for over a year."

S.K.: US schools were closed during the Trump administration.

SKUD: "what is disgusting is we are such a divided country because of the masses who hate trump and would rather see the country fail than see him succeed."

S.K.: Not anymore, skud. Americans, red states/blue states, are coming together because of Trump's radical attacks on our government, his threats against our neighbors to our north and south; his plans to take other countries' land "in one way or another" (his words), and the astounding incompetence of Signalgate.

After two months into his second presidency, Trump's approval rating is under water, breaking another record for most disliked POTUS in post-war America.

If Trump succeeds in what he does, he'll complete his takeover in Orbanizing our democracy, changing it into an authoritarian plutocracy -- like Russia, his model for a new America.

Shaw Kenawe said...

It's an indication that the administration KNOWS that what happened was incompetence of epic proportions. They're trying to lie their way out of what happened, but it will not work. This was a huge mistake that only rank amateurs would make. Hegseth is in over his head. What did anyone expect from a FAUX NOOZ host, sexual assaulter, and drunk?

Anonymous said...

Betting nothing will be done. NOTHING.

The level of incompetence in this administration and the gop in general is stunning. But with a liar and Felon leading the pary and country expect nothing but further incompetence and lying.

America brought this level of incompetence and dishonesty upon itself. Expect the ignorant Felon and his lackeys in congress to double down on both incompetence and lying.

Ms. Shaw, I do respect the fact that you are a true yellow dog democrat. I don't expect you to acknowledge that the democrats have done anything wrong including the president ignore his advisors that resulted in a tragic decision that killed 13 Americans.

Grey One talks sass said...

Well done skud, you've turned into Joseph Goebbels.

You blame Biden for the death of those 13 American souls yet say nothing about the many more who died under Trump. Again and again you bring up the 13 and yet never, not once ask yourself who negotiated the withdrawal from Afghanistan? Who did that skud? Who left our military base without any protection?

Here's a clue skud - it wasn't Biden, it was your hero, and yes you own this skud because you refuse to accept facts, because you've carried so much water for the Trump regime you could have emptied and refilled Lake Superior twice.

Maybe I'll just start calling you Joe....

So typical of Skud... when he can't be constructive, stay on topic, or deal with the truth of how he and his MAGA buddies have enabled the ignoring of the Constitution, flaunting of laws, leaking of military plans, mocking of allies, jailing of admitted innocents and the pardons of hundreds of ppl who beat US Capitol Police officers, he deflects.

Tell us Skud, why should we listen to you?

All of us here have said many times Biden, nor any other Dem was perfect. Every single one of us. All politicians are imperfect, make mistakes and of course, lie.

But even you have said you see Trump as evil. Yet you voted for people who enabled his evil.

Beaten officers, judicial orders ignored, military plans on a messaging app, innocents jailed in violation of the Constitution.

Pure evil Slud.

All on you amigo...

We'll get back to you on Sleepy Joe when you own up to your support of the MAGA America trashing agenda.
