General John Kelly: "He said that, in his opinion, Mr. Trump met the definition of a fascist, would govern like a dictator if allowed, and had no understanding of the Constitution or the concept of rule of law."
Trump begins presidency with low approval numbers, poll shows
Donald Trump is beginning his presidency with the majority of Americans disapproving of his leadership, according to a poll released Thursday.
About 36% of voters approved of his handling of the presidency and 52% have an unfavorable opinion about him, the Quinnipiac University survey said.
Men approved of him 41% to 38% while women approved of him 33% to 50%.
The poll was the first major survey conducted since Trump assumed office on Jan. 20.
At the same time, voters gave former President Barack Obama a 59% approval rating, according to the poll. Congress, on the other hand, had a 19% approval rating.
Quinnipiac interviewed 1,190 voters nationwide between Jan. 20 and 25. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.8%.
People are spending an incredible amount of time demonizing President Trump. For his policies, himself, his actions, etc. And yes, many of those protestations are valid. But I believe they are misplaced.
Strip away all of the personal animus directed at him for "the way" he goes about the job of president, just for a moment.
And then ask yourself this question. Policy wise, at the end of the day, which of the other 18 or so members in the GOP Clown Car would actually govern any differently? Huckabee? Rubio? Cruz? Fiorina? And now, Pence?
I don't think there is an inch of difference between any of these guys. The difference is in the how.
And that is where progressives are going to lose the argument.
Trump may in fact be deposed or impeached, or have to resign. And then what will we get? We will get a kinder, gentler Trumplike GOP politician, who by comparison, will look fabulous.
The Dems and Progressives should not be focusing on the person, rather on the policies. Because believe me, the majority of the GOP loves the "America First" "It's the Illegal Immigrants" "We're Gonna Build a Wall" "Let's Bomb the Shit Out of Them" "Kill Obamacare" policy positions.
It's true, Dave and Ducky, that Trump is a clown-show distraction. If you go back and look at my post about what I saw at last week's Women's March, you will see that the great majority of what I heard and saw WAS about Trump's policies, so I think many of us are concentrating on that. The few times I actually looked at cable or network news it's been hard not to hear and see Trump raving on about himself and his greatness in all things. It looks like we're going to be hearing how much bigger everything of his is than anyone else's for the next 4 years.
Dave, to your other comment -- do you believe that, say, Jeb Bush would have insulted and bullied Mexico the way Trump has and would Jeb have cozied up to Putin and praised him like Comrade Trump has?
Shaw... re Bush, not one bit... but the steamrolling of Obamacare, DeVos for Sec Ed, etc? 100% yes.
And yet he might be the only partial exception. He'd have no wall, but that's one reason he lost. The GOP party has left moderation behind. In Congress, the Casa Blanca and Main Street.
Well Middle America, it's been one week. One insane, dangerous, divisive week. How do you like him so far? Does Hillary's private server still keep you up at night?
I expected him to be bad, but I didn't expect him to be THIS bad this fast. Eight days ago, we had normal trade relations with China and Mexico. We were on the same page with every other industrialized country regarding the threat of climate change. We honored the fragility and sanctity of native lands. We recognized that TORTURE was a tactic only used by medieval barbarians. We didn't have a government that considered the media their enemy, or Russian dictators their overlords.
But that was last week. It might as well have been a thousand years ago. This dumpster fire is already out of control.
Until I take my last breath, I'll never forgive you Republicans for inflicting this evil fool upon us.
Dave, the most puzzling and disappointing part of Trump's ascendency to POTUS is the fact that he insulted and mocked POWs, Gold Star families, disabled people, women, Muslims, Jews, African-Americans, the media, Hillary (Lock Her Up!), have I left anyone out? And yet a large number of Americans (but not a majority, BTW) said that was okay. Trump's behavior was acceptable to people who would never accept that behavior in their own children, never mind an adult seeking the highest office in the land. But they did that. So when I hear of people beating up veterans or vulnerable others at protests, I can only say to those who are outraged that by voting for Trump YOU told America and the world that horrid behavior was okay with you and that Trump did not have to pay a price for behaving like a dog with distemper. Those people who voted for Trump gave him the biggest prize you can give a citizen, The Presidency. They rewarded him.
Trump's staff and supporters keep hoping he'll settle down and act like an adult. Trump's been a obstreperous 10-year old all his life, he's not going to stop now that he's 70 and has the most powerful job on the planet.
I had lunch today with a government speech writer here in Mexico...
He called Trump a megalomaniac...
I think it fits.
And he is a Republican. And their party, by their silence, owns him. Just as they claimed for all the Muslims who were silent when terrorists from their culture and religion attacked innocent people across the globe. They gave the silent protestors no grace, no gray area.
And in my mind, that is what they get.
Trump, absent a forceful denial from the likes of Sen McConnell and Speaker Ryan, in 2017, is the mainstream of Republican thought and practice.

Shaw... here's my worry.

The issue is Congress, Dave.
This moron president is a diversion. It's going to be a round of tax cuts, benefits cuts and resource pillaging.
Drumpf is just going to be a distraction.

Shaw... I'd say this about Bush... he's a Republican cut from an earlier cloth. And because of that, he got crushed.
The rest of them? There's little or no difference.
Name one policy of Trumps and leader of the GOP has made a point of actively fighting?
From the City of Brotherly Love?
Trump Booed And Met With Shouts Of “We Hate You,” And “Go Home” in Philadelphia
Donald Trump arrived in Philadephia, and the unpopular president was greeted with boos, shouts of "We hate you," and "Go home."
