We can ban the AR 15, but there will be another weapon of choice for these folks. Unless and until automatic weapons of all types and ammo clips of more than 10-20 rounds are banned, we will continue to have these shootings.

Even the limited ban I mentioned above will not end the problem, but with limited ability to fire off multiple rounds quickly, police and first responders will have a better chance to respond and attack the problems.

But I see no desire on the part of the GOP to take part in a solution. They talk about all the other reasons [broken families, mental illness] these events happen, but they are also not willing to put any money behind solutions to those problems either.

The Dems ideas may not work, but absent ANY proposed solution from the GOP, it's all we've got. Apart from thoughts and prayers of course.

There are workable solutions that would reduce the depth of the human carnage the US experiences due to firearm violence. Dave is spot on when he says... But I see no desire on the part of the GOP to take part in a solution. They talk about all the other reasons [broken families, mental illness] these events happen, but they are also not willing to put any money behind solutions to those problems either.

Until such time as the NRA is completely neutered, (IE: the current NRA leadership is gone) and the GOP gets some new and reasonable blood there is nothing that is going to change. It's sad I know, and, it IS also true.

Dave you and RN, unfortunately are correct in your assessments on why nothing will happen on sensible gun control legislation. Although it is useful to know that when the AR-15 ban was in effect, these types of massacres were not happening at the rate they are happening now. When GWB let the ban lapse, the incidents went up. There IS a cause and effect, but the criminal organization, NRA, has a strangle hold on the feckless GOP (and a few of the Dems as well).

90+% of Americans want something done, but the GOP and Moscow Mitch in particular will not allow anything to happen.

We are no longer a democratic republic, we are an oligarchy.

Seen on a rabid right winger's blog:

Apparently, our most excellent president positively THRIVES on ADVERSITY.

I honestly believes he's ENJOYNG himself most of the time.

A rare person indeed!

Trump's polling at 36% approval. Do the Trumpers actually understand anything?

It should be noted that he failed a background check and obtained his weapon through the private sale loophole.

A neighbor reported himfor threatening her but the police didn't follow up.

This guy was flashing allkinds of red lights but still retained an assault weapon (extended magazine?).

So duck are you saying background checks won't work. Maybe enhanced law enforcement will have an impact until the ACLU gets involved and says law enforcement can't interrogate someone before they kill someone.
I believe in the right to own and carry firearms but I dropped my NRA membership several years ago because they have no beliefs other than arm everyone.
High capacity magazines are fun to shoot but why not limit them to 22 cal.

Confiscate all guns and build a Studebaker with the metal.

Skud... what we're saying is background checks, if done accurately and for all purchases could indeed help. But the private gun sale loophole is a huge problem and how this guy got his gun after he was flagged on his regular background check.

I don't know if you have been through a background check to purchase a firearm but it is a cursory review at best. Didn't most of the shooters in the last few years pass a background check and receive their guns legally. One large city bans handgun ownership and is the murder capital. Background checks is a feel good program for lawmakers who have no idea what to do.
If there going to have background checks, which I support, make them comprehensive.
