The Rot At The Core Of The Republican Party

The Republicans have shown America that they are "Party Over Country," "Party Over Principles," and "Party of Love of Power Over Our Constitution."

They're all rotten to the core, and McCarthy and McConnell are the worst of the worst.

All my life I've seen the GOP stand for family values, small government, and allegiance to the rule of law. No longer does any of that exist in the current GOP. They've decided to cast their lot with A Liar, A Cheat, and A Fraud. And the stink from Trump's rancid character and his presidency has rubbed off on a once proud American political party.

The GOP may never rid itself of his stench.

There’s a rot at the core of the Republican Party, and neither the party nor the country will heal until it’s excised.

The latest evidence of that malignancy comes in a New York Times report about the Jan. 6 insurrection and how GOP congressional leaders responded in the immediate aftermath. The shock and revulsion reflected in their words and deeds present a stark contrast to today’s party line, which essentially amounts to move along, nothing to see here.

The article, published Thursday, reported that House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy and his Senate counterpart, Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell, told associates they believed President Trump was responsible for inciting the attack on the Capitol. It also said the two vowed to drive him from politics.

“I’ve had it with this guy,” McCarthy reportedly told a group of Republican leaders, saying he would advise Trump that he was going to be impeached and should resign. The article said McCarthy even considered ways to invoke the 25th Amendment, forcing Trump’s removal, before concluding that was not viable.

 Pity.

It seems that only after weighing political calculations and parsing self-interests did McCarthy and McConnell back away from saying and doing the right thing.

McCarthy flatly denied the New York Times’ account. “Totally false and wrong,” the Bakersfield Republican said, though hours later he was heard on an audiotape broadcast on MSNBC saying that Trump would probably be impeached and should resign.

There are idiots. And there are liars. And there is Kevin McCarthy, the idiot liar. Or lying idiot, whatever you prefer.

The NYTimes report never said McCarthy asked trump to resign. Okay, that's an established fact. He said...

“The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this [impeachment resolution] will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign,”

His recommendation, I assume, based on his belief, was that Trump should resign. Or in plain English, that even crazy Matt Gaetz understands, McCarthy, based on what is on the tape, which he admitted is authentic, McCarth believed Trump should resign.

And now we have McCarthy saying he never said that, or believed that either.

Who are we to believe? A proved liar like McCarthy, or our own ears?

Rotten to the core.

With more tapes to come.

unknown and Dave,

Both McCarthy and McConnell stated unequivocally that Trump was responsible for the attempted coup against the United States government -- Trump's own government.

But both McCarthy and McConnell are moral cowards, and believe hanging onto power and Trump's base is more important than the rule of law. The correct thing to do was to impeach Trump and let the facts show what Trump did. In a healthy democracy, Trump would have been found guilty and kicked out of office.

We're no longer a healthy democratic republic thanks to moral cowards like McCarthy and McConnell, and the anti-democracy Trump.

Both McCarthy and McConnell are moral cowards...

Being a republican these days apparently requires a pol to be a moral coward. There are few honest republicans w/integrity and ethical compasses at the national (and some states) level anymore.

"You can't prove I said that!"
"You have tapes?"
"That's not me! Fake news!"

It's hard to beat a determined liar.

The Republican party has never been about family. They claim that, but it was always a lie. Go back to Coolidge, Nixon, or any Republican being about family has always been a lie.

You know, there was a time in this country when a politician like Kevin McCarthy was
caught in a lie like this he would resign. We’re obviously way past that time now.

I’m old enough to remember that time. F**k you, trump. Look what you’ve done to our country you bastard.
