OPENING NITE: RED SOX 9, YANKEES 7

FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE:

"The Red Sox were all things to all people when they opened their 110th season with a 9-7 victory against the Yankees at Fenway Park last night.

The Sox trotted out 2004 icon Pedro Martinez for the ceremonial first pitch. With no cornfield handy, Pedro emerged from a makeshift white tent in the left field corner, wearing his old No. 45. He milked the moment, then threw one last pitch to his old catcher, Jason Varitek.

There was more, much more.

[SKIP]

For good measure, Neil Diamond himself (wearing a Sox cap and a “Keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn’’ jacket) appeared in person to sing “Sweet Caroline’’ before the home half of the eighth.

Yeesh. What a circus. Thank goodness Tiger Woods and the Octomom declined their invitations.

Oh, there was baseball, too. The Sox came back from deficits of 5-1 and 7-5, scoring the winning run on a passed ball in the seventh to beat the world champs in front of 37,440 — the 551st consecutive Fenway sellout. The game featured 24 hits and nine pitching changes in a tidy 3:46.

There. After one day of baseball, the Red Sox are in first place and the Yankees are in the cellar with the worst record in the majors (OK, nobody else has played yet — it still sounds good)."

Congratulations to the Sox! My favorite team is whoever is playing the Yanks.

One game does not win the pennant, the Sox didn't win that game, the Yankee's gave it away.
I pick the Yankees to win 104 games this year and win the AL pennant AGAIN, and the Red Sox to come in third.

Ironic that James Taylor is a Red Sox fan.

Go Mariners.

Shaw, I first fell in love with the sox in the days of Jim Lonborg, Tony C., and of course, Yaz.

It broke my heart to see them lose to the hated Cardinals back then.

While I still have a soft spot in my heart for them, I will always prefer the Angels, even though the Red Sox regularly beat the interlopers from Anaheim.

Dave, I have relatives in SoCal who root for the Angels.

And Arthurstone, my nephew lives in Seattle and is a Mariners' fan.

I will always be part of the Red Sox Nation.

J. Mopper: Why is it ironic?

Ah. A real subject.

Notice all the so called "experts" lamenting Boston's lack of offense. How stupid are the gang at ESPN? The Redsoz have Pedroia. Ortiz, Drew. The bald guy at first with the giant head. Forgot his name but I'm a White Sox fan so it doesn't matter. They got Elsbury. Jesus they have plenty of offense. The Yankees will struggle without the bat and quiet leadership of Hideki Matsui. Andy Pettit is washed up. Midway through the season the Yanks will be begging Roger Clemens to bulk up on roids and come back.

Boston will make it all the way to the ALCS where the White Sox will sweep them and go on to win the World Series. The Yankees will finish in a close battle for third in the east with the Orioles.

God. I could talk baseball forever.
