The Democratic Party Platform

I'm not sure many people take the time to look at the political parties' platforms, because often the party's nominee disagrees with and even ignores many of the planks in the platform.  But a look at the highlights reveals the differences in values between the Republicans and the Democrats.

Romney, for example, had to distinguish himself from his party's position on abortion, which allowed no exceptions whatsoever, even to save the mother's life and which supports a constitutional amendment to end all abortions.  Romney's position allows abortion in cases of rape and incest and to save the mother's life.  I find it strange that there is that much daylight between the official party platform on this subject and Romney's stated position, and that Romney aligns himself with a party that seeks to overturn a woman's right to choose, something he gave his word never to do.

Here, in no special order, are some of the planks in the Democratic Party's platform:

"Health Care:

We will continue to stand up to Republicans working to take away the benefits and protections that are already helping millions of Americans every day. We refuse to go back to the days when health insurance companies had unchecked power to cancel your health policy, deny you coverage, or charge women more than men.

At the same time, the Affordable Care Act is not the end of efforts to improve health care for all Americans. Democrats will continue to fight for a strong health care workforce with an emphasis on primary care.

GOP:  Overturn Obamacare.

Medicare:

The Republican budget plan would end Medicare as we know it. Democrats adamantly oppose any efforts to privatize or voucherize Medicare.

The GOP wants to vocherize Medicare.

Taxes:

We Democrats support lowering the corporate tax rate while closing unnecessary loopholes, and lowering rates even further for manufacturers who create good jobs at home.

GOP:  More tax breaks for billionnaires!

Unions:

Democrats believe that the right to organize and collectively bargain is a fundamental American value.

All we have to do is look at what the Republican Governor of Wisconsin did to that state's unions to understand where the GOP stands on unions.

Immigration Reform:

Democrats know there is broad consensus to repair that system and strengthen our economy, and that the country urgently needs comprehensive immigration reform that brings undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and requires them to get right with the law, learn English, and pay taxes in order to get on a path to earn citizenship.

GOP:  No Dream Act for anyone!

Art funding:

Democrats are proud of our support for arts funding ... We will continue to support public funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and for programs providing art and music education in primary and secondary schools.

GOP:  Art schmart.  Who needs it?  We got Clint and an Empty Chair!

Abortion:

Democrats will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers.

We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her clergy; there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way.

The GOP platform calls for a constitutional ban on abortion.

Marriage Equality:

We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.

The GOP platform calls for a constitutional ban on marriage equality.  AND the GOP wants to reinstitute DADT!

2nd Amendment:

We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms."

GOP:  An automatic weapon in every pot! And why stop at one?  Guns, guns, and more guns.  A gun massacre a week!  Now THAT'S American!

Climate Change:

We know that global climate change is one of the biggest threats of this generation – an economic, environmental, and national security catastrophe in the making. We affirm the science of climate change, commit to significantly reducing the pollution that causes climate change, and know we have to meet this challenge by driving smart policies that lead to greater growth in clean energy generation and result in a range of economic and social benefits.

The GOP platform completely ignored the subject of climate change.

Energy:

In the last four years, President Obama and the Democratic Party have taken concrete steps to make us more energy independent. We’ve supported nearly 225,000 clean energy jobs and Americans are importing less oil, breathing cleaner air, and saving money on energy costs. Historic investments in clean energy technologies have helped double the electricity we get from wind and solar. New emissions and fuel efficiency standards for American cars are reducing our oil use, saving consumers at the pump, and putting Americans back to work. Our dependence on foreign oil is now at a 16-year low, and a new era of cheap, abundant natural gas is helping to bring jobs and industry back to the United States.

GOP on energy:  Drill, Baby, Drill.

Frankly I wish they would explicitly call for tax penalties for companies that move jobs overseas. It would be a popular position and a policy we need.

I agree with FDR's position on government worker unions.

Platforms- Words that please the ideological faithful. Nothing more.

Sounds like a platform for versus a platform against.

I find it odd that a leader of a party does not agree with the party platform.
The platform should be changed to reflect the candidates stand on the issues.
Americans should take seriously what a party platform says.
Since Romney has taken different stands on the same issue, Americans can only judge by what the whole party agrees to, its platform.

What was FDR's position on government workers unions SF?

Shaw Kenawe said...

Steve, FDR warned against government worker unions and collective bargaining.

Paul said...

Yes, I know. I wanted to know if SF knew, or if he could explain why FDR allowed government workers to unionize after making such a statement.

FDR... Right on a few things.

Anon 11:21: Even when the candidate is more consistent, he doesn't always get the last word. In 2008, for example, McCain tried to get an exception for rape victims added to the across-the-board outlaw-abortion plank in the Republican platform, but he could not get the party to agree.

As far as I know, Romney has not even tried to get this plank of the platform mitigated this time.

Obama, of course, is in agreement with the Democratic platform's pro-choice position.

"Unions have done so much to advance manufacturing in the US. It was the Japanese who saved the American Auto industry because until they produced vehicles of high quality, the auto unions produced a very sub-standard product.'

I totally disagree!

Ever driven a GM from the 1950's or 1960's?

Take a ride in the first Corvette, a 1955 Thunderbird, a 1957 Chevrolet convertible, or any American car from that period.

They blow away any car made in Asia, and the workmanship was beautiful. Steel, not plastic. HD Springs and Suspension, a large motor and great traction and stability.

You must not have had the experience, try it.

"Unions demanded more money for less work"

Skud, you mean the 40 hour work week, benefits, retirement, health insurance, the stopping of child (slave) labor, insistence of safety in products being sold to Americans, etc., etc.................

Another Republiscum who wants to go back to the 19th century.

Read History, it wasn't a pretty life for Americans before workers stood up and made employers stop abuses.

I guess you think America can run on its people making minimum wage, wrong.

I guess you think Americans expectations for life should be the same as some person in Asia making a few bucks a day, so they can offer America cheap socks.

I see you know even less about cars, than politics, or anything else I've read you blow hard about.

Regarding the platform, as it is the subject of this post, I would ask Mitt this...

Given that you, Mr Romney, disagree with your party's platform stance on abortion, would you say their view is wrong, or extreme? And if not, why do you disagree with it?

Maybe SF would take a try at answering for Romney...

I for one agree that the position of the nominee should be reflected in the platform... logic says that the party believes their is only one right belief on this issue doesn't it?

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced Tuesday that the state would not comply with a court ruling and restore early voting in the final weekend before the election until an appellate court rules on the matter.

"Announcing new hours before the court case reaches final resolution will only serve to confuse voters and conflict with the standard of uniformity," Husted, a Republican, wrote in a memo. "Therefore, there is no valid reason for my office or the county boards of elections to set hours for in-person absentee voting the last three days before the election at this time."

Just the calmer seas (such as they are) before the approaching rolling storm full of fury.

Saw the First Lady on teevee. Elegant, charming, graceful articulate, and a fabulous delivery. Reads the teleprompter by far better than hubby, and with passion. Great POLITICAL speech.

On substance.........................

@Dave << Regarding the platform, as it is the subject of this post >>

I would ask, who wrote a Dem platform that adds risk to Obama's re-election by having to be amended to include faith in God and recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel? And did you see Villaraigosa?!

Problems with the intro of Steny Hoyer and had a heck of a time with the vote needed to amend the platform. That guy needs to do a little less partying and more governing in Los Angeles.

KP said...

Having said that about the Dem platform; congratulations to President Obama who apparently insisted on the changes. Strong move. Romney should have done something similar where the Rep platform failed on abortion issues.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Here's my two cents on the references to God in the Democratic platform:

Why is it necessary?

Too many people use religion as a cudgel to bang others over the head and prove they're "holier than thou." And it demeans everyone.

This is a POLITICAL convention not a religious one.

We are the most religious western democracy in the world. Everyone knows a majority of Americans believes in God and that both President Obama and Vice President Biden are Christians.

And what to make of bloggers who profess to be great Christians promoting disgusting videos like this.

I don't think religion should be mixed with politics.

KP said...

Shaw, I agree with you, it is not necessary. As I have said before, the platoforms are not meaningful and Romney and Obama should not be castigated for what others wrote into them if they disagree. Presidents simply ignore what they don't like. However, Romney got a lot of heat for the republican platform (I think wrongly) and Obama was catching a lot of heat as well (I think wrongly).

My question would be the same to those who wrote the platforms: why did you put items in or leave items out that would cause such controversy?

Lastly, the way Obama shouldered the responsibility to change what he didn't like was impressive to me. I understand that you didn't think it necessary. What is impressive is that he did, either because he believes strongly in God or he felt it helped his chances for re-election. Either way, it was bold!

Excellent points KP... I enjoyed the Dems who a week ago said the platform was very important and this week they are saying the opposite... And then the GOP who last week said no one reads the platform saying this week how important it is... Nice juxtaposition...

Shaw... The code thing is horrible on a mobile

I assume there was a link there. I didn't view the video because if it is disgusting why would I want to. There is nothing I haven't seen or heard at this point and I tend to focus on the positives.

Speaking of positive, the First Lady was great. I enjoyed he speech and appreciate the way she feels about her family and extended family.

I watched the Repub convention on PBS and MSNBC. So far, the two conventions are pretty similarly good. Both focused on up and coming party members who 'came up the hard way', both had very good speeches from the wives and both touched on the fact that they believe the American Dream is alive and well, and both stretch the truth quite a bit. As well, there is some real promosing young talent in both partys.

I am looking forward to President Clinton tonight. Obama is gutsy, following his wife and Bill are tall orders (she may be a better speaker than he is) but I am sure he will rise to the occassion.
