Clueless People Are Upset Because President Obama Reached Out to Young People on YouTube With GloZell Green

YouTube Star Sensation GloZell Interviews President Obama

Hear all that chattering and pearl clutching going on in certain areas of the intertubz? Yeah.  Lots of clueless folks don't understand why President Obama agreed to being interviewed by GloZell Green.   I guess those people think Mr. Obama shouldn't reach out to people they know nothing about or people who represent popular culture they don't understand.

They are in a rage because Mr. Obama agreed to the interview with GloZell Green, but they get green in the face when President Obama breathes in and out, so who cares.  I don't.

And good for President Obama for appearing with GloZell Green.  That interview got over NINE MILLION hits.  The president knew what he was doing, and he reached millions and millions of young people who are happy to know the president takes an interest in them.  Plus millions of them are future voters and will remember this.

Let the Waah-Waahs stew in their own green envy.

Where does this fall on the scale of "he put his feet on the desk!1!!" to "ZOMG, tan (pimp) suit!1!!"?

I can understand the issues with this...

So here would be my question...

Are there any venues that perhaps a President should avoid so as to not denigrate the import of the office?

If so, how should that decision be made?

What factors might go into that decision?

I guess for me, like many others, I am wondering if this was in fact, beneath the dignity of the office of the Presidency.

Really, me me, a non issue. Didn't see it, don't intend to. Better things to do with my time.

Off topic a bit but... Interesting he won't see Bibi
when he is in town. Unfortunately Boner blew this one by not consulting with the President.

Young people don't vote, that's a fact.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Anonymous, did you pull that incorrect information out of your, um, ear?

Election 2012: Study: Youth vote was decisive:

Mitt Romney would have cruised to the White House had he managed to split the youth vote with Barack Obama, according to an analysis released Wednesday.

Obama easily won the youth vote nationally, 67 percent to 30 percent, with young voters proving the decisive difference in Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio, according to an analysis by the Center for Research and Information on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University.

Obama won at least 61 percent of the youth vote in four of those states, and if Romney had achieved a 50-50 split, he could have flipped those states to his column, the study said. on

My question, Dave, is who decides if something is beneath the dignity of the office of the presidency? His staff or his opposition?

Each generation has some popular cultural venue. Two months from winning the presidency, Richard Nixon appeared on "Laugh-In" saying "Sock it to me?" And other presidents have involved themselves in popular culture as well.

YouTube, one of this generation's popular culture venues, and GloZell Green is part of that culture. An AMERICAN phenomenon, like it or not.

The right wingers got their undies in a bunch over the color of the president's suit last summer. Are we surprised they'd jump on this as an opportunity to trash him again?

They're like the little boy who cried wolf They've made themselves look ridiculous each time they go bonkers over trivia so often that when something really important happens it's unlikely they'll be taken seriously.

Let the republicans complain all the way to the losers column in 2016.

Les Carpenter said...

Dave is really spot on. He defined my initial "gut" feeling very well.

The presidency should be above pop culture and responding to triteness.

With all due respect Shaw IMO you are not correct on this one.

The righties running for president had no problem being seen with Ted Nugent and Cheney appeared on Flush Limpballs radio sewer all the time. Obama on YouTube with GloGreen is tame compared with the slime those righties embrace.

I believe the POTUS should strive to uphold the dignity of his office and that's why I fully supported Nancy Reagan when she invited an astrologer to the White House to advise Ronnie on how to run world affairs. That was the dignified thing to do: Consult with a charlatan on national security issues!

I believe the POTUS should strive to uphold the dignity of his office and that's why we supported Richard Nixon when he proclaimed "I am not a crook!"

I believe the POTUS should strive to uphold the dignity of his office and that's why we supported Dubya when he slapped the asses of the volley ball players in the China Olympics.

There must be some reason why the righties are taking to their fainting couches over this inoffensive appearance by Obama on YouTube. There's gotta be a reason. Let me se...

These kids today. They should be reading Will and Krauthammer columns and watching Meet the Press.

It's outrageous POTUS would try to get his message to young people via what young people are watching.

I didn't know much about this until the Rigthies started whining. Weren't there 2 or 3 other YouTubers there? Between them they have almost 20 millions subscribers. Bill O and Meghan Kelly get about 3M viewers nightly and only half a million in the 25-51 age demo. Seems like a smart play to me.

These are the same people who found virtue in electing a Pres. they could have a beer and choke on a pretzel with.

Dave, I suppose an interview with Stormfront or Inspire would be unwise but deciding what is undignified is tricky. I don't mean to be disrespectful because I have a lot of respect for you. And, I don't mean to compare anyone to anyone but, is hanging with prostitutes beneath the dignity of the Son o' God?

You go where the people you are trying to reach is at.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Craig, great points!

I think the righties are all foamed up over this only because Mr. Obama is involved.

Curious. I don't see anything on the right wing blogs about John Boehner's traitorous action in going behind Mr. Obama's back and secretly inviting Bibi to speak in Congress to try to interfere with very delicate negotiations with Iran.

When I read that Boehner's excuse was that Mr. Obama did the same in going around Congress in the deferment immigration issue, the ninnies who agreed with that excuse failed to recognize that Mr. Obama was very much up front in telling Congress and everyone what he would do. Also, Congress can override whatever Mr. Obama does by exec. order. How do the president and America override the damage Boehner would do to this country by interfering with foreign policy?

That is all to subtle for certain pinheads to understand.

"How do the president and America override the damage Boehner would do to this country by interfering with foreign policy?."

This is one more example of republicans screw it up and democrats have to fix it.

So Sarah "My Family Is A Bunch Of Drunken Brawlers" Palin is hinting she may run for president again?

Oh, pleeze run Sarah run!

Remember guys, the people who write the most blistering, withering, malicious criticisms and lies about Mr. Obama and who call him the most vile, malevolent names are the same people who supported Sistah Sarah and thought she was WONDERFUL, BRILLIANT, and DOWN TO EARTH (yes, that was true, she was down in the dirt alright). Those same folks believed that we Libruls were askeered of her.

We're so skeerd of Sistah Sarah that we hope with every fiber of our being that the Tea-Pee-ers put her on the GOP ticket AGAIN!

Dream ticket for the 2016 GOP:

Sistah Sarah of the Drunken Brawlin' Palin Family and Louie "The Asparagus" Gohmert!

I can think of another. Maybe a president should not go to a cemetery and place a wreath where murderous Nazis are buried?

Why do folks feel the need to resort to petty references when there exists better language to make the point?

None taken Craig...

It can all be on the table as far as I'm concerned, as long as we can discuss it, maybe even disagree, but do so as adults, rationally and respectfully.

And your point on with whom Jesus would be hanging, is not lost on me.

I'm not sold on either side... honestly, I'm just conflicted.

Dave Miller said...

Shaw, I saw that Palin is thinking about it.

I for one, hope she runs.

Life would be so much fun for at least a few months, at least she gets asked a gotcha question... like, what did you have for breakfast today, or what books have you read this month, or God forbid, why do you want to be President.

Then the silence will mercifully end her campaign, if not her entire reality show career...

Ducky's here said...

I'm waiting for the real hardcore right to say he should only be talking to "real" Americans.

They just don't get it.

They also don't seem aware of Faux's demographics, either.
The audience is elderly, conservative and rigid. There isn't much audience turnover either. You're talking about 4 million hard core.
What could he say to that audience?

Here's why Jindal will never be president:

If SCOTUS Strikes Down Gay Marriage Bans, We Should Amend Constitution

And Dr. Ben thinks if he were president he should be able to get rid of Supreme Court judges who don't rule on cases the way he wants them to. (He was talking about the possibility of the SCOTUS ruling equal marriage as constitutional and then getting rid of the judges who do so.)

Jindal and Carson are representative of certain groups of conservatives who believe in the rule of law ONLY when that law is something they agree with. They are disturbed by the idea of equality of marriage because of their respective religions, and would use the power of state or presidential office (if they had it) to abrogate the law.

You never hear conservatives talk about why they would support politicians who advocate such unAmerican, unConstitutional ideas.

Les Carpenter said...

And you likely never will. It is hard to discuss why you support contradictions.

Obama doesn't get treated as poorly as Palin did.
Almost the entire media attacked her daily like a bunch of rabid dogs
I guess they had to keep her down as to not interfere with the propping up of their chosen guy

ralphie, if you don't understand why Mr. Obama chose that YouTube venue, then find someone who will take the time to explain it to you. I'm not going to do it.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Anonymous @8:41,

What ruined Palin more than "the entire media" was Sarah herself.

Everytime she spoke, she put her prodigious foot in her word-salad-producing mouth. She took herself down without any help from the media. People who are without self-awareness and whose only goal is money often are their own worst enemies.

Dave, My point is, I can't think of any forum or person any Pres. would talk to that would demean the office. It would be beneath the dignity of the office if and only if a Pres. comported themselves in an undignified manner. Obama did not.

Those who criticize Obama (I'm not including you here) also criticize the apathy and political ignorance of the Millennials. Speaking to them about policy that effects them is somehow undignified if done outside the very serious fourth estate. This is such a non issue.

Howie Kurtz said it was 'beneath the dignity'. What did Howie say when Obama sat down with Foxmate, BillO. The man who was taped offering assoc. producer Andrea Makris a falafel rub down in the shower and the author of "Those Who Trespass" featuring stirring prose like, "Hey baby, put down that pipe and get my pipe up".

Hey Howie, does Glozell have anything that dignified on her resume?
