Jones Act Lifted for P.R. Disaster Relief

UPDATE 2

Thanks to Dave Miller for finding out that The Hill reported an "unproven" story, according to Snopes, on the Trump administration charging evacuees full plane fare. According to Dave, The Hill reported this unproven information from another source. I had read it from more than one source, but reported it from The Hill because I believed The Hill was reliable. Apparently it is not in this instance.

THE FOLLOWING STORY IS UNPROVEN, ACCORDING TO SNOPES:

BREAKING: The Trump administration is reportedly forcing evacuees from Puerto Rico to sign promissory notes and surrender their passports to guarantee full repayment for full-fare transportation costs off the devastated island.Yet taxpayers have to pick up the tab for private planes for Trump's staff and personal trips to Mar-a-Lago.

#45's first instinct is to consider the profits of "shippers," not American lives:

Get off that Trump thing already , you are sounding like a broken record,
.How about talking about these douchbags like Chelsea Manning? Who is a nation disgrace. Ours Military Academies provide America with our future military leaders. There is no room in the military for someone who hates his country and may become another Major Nidal Hassan ! Remember him? He was the slimebag who murdered 13 people and injured more than 30 additional individuals or sell out his country by revealing classified information like Private First Class Bradley Rapone, and Chelsea Manning.
Rapone should be thrown out of the military and given a dishonorable discharge.
We need to re-classify communism as a clear and present danger to the American way of life.

To the Troll Monte Cristo:

Definition of an internet troll: A person who sows discord on the Internet by starting quarrels by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion, often for the troll's amusement.

If you don't like what I write on my own blog, don't come here and read it. It's a simple remedy to your problem that even you should be able to understand.

Only a disturbed person would continue to visit a blog he/she doesn't like and then tell the blog owner what she should write about.

PS The "Trump thing" I will NOT get off of is reporting on his miserable presidency, his miserable lies, his miserable racism, and his miserable immoral self.

Evacuees must surrender their passport and sign a note for the cost of a full price one way ticket>
That's a huge sum to a person who has been wiped out.

I wonder if it applies to say an elderly individual evacuated to receive medical care?

P.S. You get only the top shelf trolls, shaw.

If you would research what happened you would notice that there was pushback for lifting the Jones act because of it's possible affect on American Union workers.
Of course your information could have come from chuckie schulmer who is first on attack second on facts. His statement about the tax proposal favoring the rich before any details have been given. He and te botox madam make a great pair.

Skudrunner, this report says nothing about the Jones Act protecting American union workers:

The Jones Act, when it was established in 1920, was meant to promote shipping by U.S.-owned and operated vessels.

[skip]

Still, the American Maritime Partnership, a coalition representing the domestic shipping industry, argues that the act supports national defense needs and ensures a vibrant maritime industry.

Please give me a link to where you got that information about the unions.

Also, I wouldn't insult Nancy Pelosi about botox when we have a FLOTUS who's also had botox injections, nose job, and silicone implants to enhance her looks. I guess it's worthy of ridicule only when liberal women use it?

Shaw... the policy of repayment, while on the books at state, does not apply to Puerto Rico, a US territory. The Hill, which reported the story based on another story from MarketWatch has since said that the US Government is not doing this. Also, SNOPES has found this to be unproven.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Thanks for the heads-up Dave. I will correct my post. I thought The Hill was a reliable source, but it looks like I'll have to check out their reporting like I do others!

Darn Ms.Shaw.....that was one nit you couldn't pick, must have ruined your day.

Dave Miller said...

Shaw... as for the Hill, I think it is. But the world we are in is like this...

They reported what someone else reported. Without checking it out. If the someone else was wrong, then something wrong gets reported. But then because someone like The Hill reported it, other media companies, seeing them as good, report the same, over and over again.

Few outlets are doing their own investigation, fact checking and digging.

ESPN has been burned a number of times by this, going with local stories that later turned out to be bogus.

We really do have a media problem in the US right now.

If you think that small little nit would ruin my day, you obviously don't know me.

Dave: "We really do have a media problem in the US right now."

You're so right. We really need to check and double check stories.

skudrunner came by today and said the Jones Act was to protect unions, but I couldn't find that in anything I read. That doesn't mean it's fake, but I wish skud would learn to back up his claims with links. He never does when I ask him to.

The purpose of trolling is to get the blogger and other commenters to waste time and energy responding, while minimizing the troll's own investment of time and energy. That's why troll comments are often just wild assertions and non sequiturs, with no effort at proper spelling or grammar. To answer questions or debate or provide links to back things up would increase the troll's investment of time and energy, thus defeating the purpose.

Every blogger has been misled by a false story from an apparently reliable source now and then. In this case, the fact that it's so easy to believe Trump would do such a thing is revealing in itself.

It does him little credit that he's finally getting things moving in response to the Puerto Rico disaster. His response has been scandalously slow, and that will end up costing lives.

I saw a post somewhere to the effect that about half the US population doesn't know that Puerto Rico is part of the US. I think we can guess which half.

There is likely a reason skuds claims aren't backed up links. Just sayin...

Ms Shaw, I didn't say the Jones act was formed to support union activity, what I did say was there was pushback. Where did I get this information, I listen to various news sources and that was mentioned as an issue. The reason supplies are not reaching the people in PR is because the truck drivers are not showing up for work but I assume that is Trump's fault.

As to the botox comment, it has worked well for FLOTUS

Shaw Kenawe said...

skudrunner: "Where did I get this information, I listen to various news sources and that was mentioned as an issue."

Sorry, skud, unless you're willing to name the "news sources" where you heard that, what you wrote is nothing more than hearsay and not credible.

definition of hearsay:

hear·say

noun
information received from other people that one cannot adequately substantiate; rumor.

the botox has worked VERY well for Nancy Pelosi, who is 30 years older than the FLOTUS.

skudrunner said...

MSNBC for one, they are non biased so I thought that was a good source.

It is difficult to drive to PR so everything needs to come by air or sea and there needs to be people to off load and deliver. We could send a hundred ships and they can only offload one at a time. Manpower is what is needed more than anything else, any volunteers?

Jerry Critter said...

Skud - “We could send a hundred ships and they can only offload one at a time.”

Actually most ports can offload multiple ships at one time.
