For centuries the greatest of European artists worked their magic largely in the context of Christian/Catholic themes. In doing so they were commenting not merely on religion but on the human condition. And the magnitude of their achievements helped redefine the possibilities not just of religion, but of humanity. Such considerations lead me to celebrate such as Notre Dame while condemning the transgressions against humanity of the Catholic church. So I mourn for Notre Dame, and hope for its restoration. It's part of what makes us human, history, art and all, and should remain part of what we are.

"Around five hundred firefighters were battling the blaze on Monday evening, according to France’s interior ministry.

By 11 p.m., Gen. Jean-Claude Gallet, the Paris fire chief, said that the structure, including the two magnificent towers soaring above the skyline, had been “saved and preserved as a whole,” but that two-thirds of the roof was destroyed. The cause remains unknown."

No! No! Wait! The folks over at the rabid right wing Hate Blog (STINKY "CHEEZE" BLOG) know who did it! "Moslem vermin!" Just go take a look at their comments. They know who did it! Call France and tell them the CHEEEEEEEEEEEZE blog solved the crime! It was the "Moslem vermin!"

Now let those nice people at the CHEEEEEEEEEZE blog go back to praising Jesus!

CHEEZES LOVES YOU!

Michael, well put. Thanks.

Fairly, I get the feeling you feel nothing but scorn for thos hypocrites. I don't blame you. No one takes them seriously; you shouldn't.

Meanwhile, I just read this in the NYTimes:

"Claude Mbowou...[s]peaking of Notre Dame with tears in his eyes, Mr. Mbowou, a Muslim political scientist at the Sorbonne, said that Notre Dame “is much more than a cathedral.”

“I’m a Muslim but I’m still very moved when I see this place,” he said. “It represents something deep, it transcends us. It’s a loss, not only for France but for the entire world. It’s as if the pyramids in Egypt were destroyed.

But Mr. Mbowou has felt the undercurrent, he said, and decried “the merchants of hatred,” adding: “What is sad is the kind of hateful interpretation of this event that is already beginning to circulate. These days it’s the morons who dictate what we should debate.”

Mr. Mbowou doesn't sound very vermin-y to me. He sounds like a decent human being.

The folks who cynically promote the idea that "Moslem vermin" perpetrated this tragedy are just what Mr. Mbowou calls them, "Merchants of Hate."

Easter week – anniversery of the Boston Marathon bombing – Biggest church outside of Rome.

They wouldn’t tell you it was moslem vermin if they knew. That would undermine their frantic importation plans.
