Greenlandia

UPDATE BELOW

The Republicans' preznit announced he was interested in buying Greenland from the Danish government, then when the idea was not welcomed by Greenland and Denmark, Trump, like the immature little snot that he is, cancelled a planned state visit to Denmark because Greenland and Denmark didn't want to sell him Greenland.

I'm not making this up. That's what really happened!

Remarkable.

Each day I read the news and am astonished at the puerile behavior of America's POTUS and wonder what the next outrage will be, and President Porn Star Shagger never disappoints. This time he threw his usual childish temper tantrum because he didn't get his way, so he cancelled a scheduled state visit. What really sticks in President Dotard's craw is that the Danish PM called his idea of buying Greenland "absurd."  President Dotard really hates being laughed at. But it 's hard to think of him as other than an absurd little man!

The Danes would do well to keep away from this clueless maniac and raging dumpster fire of an administration.

BTW, the current national debt is $22+ TRILLION!  HEY! LET'S BUY GREENLAND!!!

To recap Trump's current lunacy:

Trump wants Denmark to sell him Greenland.

Denmark said, "We don't own Greenland so we can't sell it to you."

Greenland said, "We're not for sale," with the subtext,"Are you out of your mind?"

Trump gets made at Denmark for not selling him Greenland, which they can't do in the first place, so Trump canceled a scheduled state visit to Denmark because "That'll SHOW THEM!"

This is truly deranged stuff: Incredible ignorance, arrogance, and petulance.

On behalf of true Americans, I extend an apology to Denmark and Greenland for Trump's stupid and childish behavior.

UPDATE:

Frequent P.E. commenter, Dave Miller, reports that perhaps Trump's canceling his state visit to Denmark is tied to the fact that President Obama is scheduled to visit that country after Trump was scheduled in September, and Trump is too frightened to be seen as less popular than the wildly popular former POTUS.

That sounds like a more logical reason for Trump canceling his visit: Cowardice -- and fear of seeing President Obama cheered by large, adoring crowds.  Makes sense, since Trump is obsessed with the size of crowds. And somewhere in his small, dark soul he knows he's a lesser man than President Obama.

From "The Root:"

"While all the news has been about Donald Trump canceling a planned trip to Denmark because the Danish prime minister found claims that the president was looking into buying Greenland bogus AF, it turns out that the real story might be that Trump fears being upstaged by forever President Barack Obama.

Turns out that weeks after Trump’s proposed visit to Denmark, Obama is scheduled to visit the Scandinavian country, according to Denmark site, the Local.

Obama is a goddamn rockstar. Everywhere he goes, he gets the kind of reception that Trump only gets during his rallies. It’s why the president rallies so much; it’s because he can’t survive without adoration. He must be adored, which is why he spends so much time on Twitter tweeting out his own praises."

The Danes are celebrating, I hope. What a relief to have avoided dealing with that pile of Orange offal. He is such an embarrassment to this country.

This was a comment from the Post story on this which I think nailed it:

"Dear Denmark, this was going to be nothing more than a photo op showing him doing one of those stupid "I have power over you" handshakes with the PM as he says to the press, "She's very attractive. We had a very good discussion. Will we buy Greenland? We talked about it. You'll have to wait and see." Be glad he's not coming."

Greg Sarjent in the Post is speculating that with an Obama visit coming up in September to Denmark, Trump was looking for a reason to bail because he feared he'd look bad in comparison. Crowd sizes and all that I suppose.

In any event, I'm not going to ding Trump for the idea. We've bought territory in the past, I believe most recently Alaska. Greenland has some great natural resources that the US presumedly could use.

Dave: "Greenland has some great natural resources that the US presumedly could use."

Don't you think Danes and the Greenlandic people could make use of those great natural resources? The US is blessed with an abundance of natural resources without our having to pressure other smaller countries into selling theirs. IMO, Trump acted like a spoiled brat, and the report of Mr. Obama's upcoming visit may very well be part of his cancelling his visit,Trump is that narcissistic.

Possumlady, The Danes truly should count their blessings while we continue to experience counting our very bad luck in having this ridiculous man as POTUS.

Ray, He embarrasses the US on a daily basis.

Dave Miller said...

Shaw... daily? heck, recently, it's been hourly.

The Chosen One? Any real Christian would know the ramifications of that statement. But let's put that in the drawer with the rest of the things that Trump does that sailors on the Mother Ship would have abhorred had Pres Obama said them. Yet on Trump's lips, they are somehow benign or misunderstood statements.

You ever see that kind of grace during the Obama Admin?

Yeah... me neither.

Dave, Trump can do no wrong and can say nothing foolish to his True Believers.

Nobody has written about the Greenlanders' point of view.
They are part of the Happiest Country on Earth. They have education, healthcare, retirement, living wages. 4 weeks vacation by law for all employees. Civil Rights. Women's rights.
As US citizens, they have none of that. They cannot stop any influx of assault weapons into their society. They are mostly Inuits, and the USA record with native peoples is far from stellar. They know the US will sell off the rights to their land, and strip mine it with zero environmental protections, as they do in so many states in the union. Unlike the people of West Virginia, I do not believe they would appreciate the devastation. And with Denmark, the people might share in the benefits of mining, as they are socialist. With the US, the people only get to pay for the clean up.
Tough choice.

Something tells me Denmark wouldn't be the slightest bit interested even IF they were rich enough!

This is not the first time the US has entertained buying Greenland. With Greenland's location and natural resources it is not a bad thought and why not throw it out there.
This won't go anywhere but it is worth a shot.

skudrunner, why do some Americans think small countries should sell their mineral-rich lands to America, a country that has an abundance of natural resources?

The potential purchase of Greenland in the past was about defense. We already have a base there, Thule Air Base. Now wanting to buy Greenland is about its mineral resources for the US to plunder. What do you think would happen to the 56,000 Greenlanders? Do you think a president like Trump and his rotten administration would give a flying donut about them? Do they have anything to say in being part of this transaction? (They don't want any part of US.) It's not just about land, but human beings! All we have to do is look at how Trump and his rotten administration treatd Puerto Rico after Hurrican Maria to understand why the Greenlanders would NEVER want to join with the US. And they're correct. The US has a terrible record of working with and for indigenous peoples.

I can't believe how many Americans think it's just fine to covet someone else's land and to want to take over its population just because it's there and we can. But, actually we can't. Our deficit is now ONE TRILLION DOLLARS! What's Trump going to us to buy Greenland with, his charming personality?

Shaw Kenawe said...

RN You got that right!

skudrunner said...

Would you feel the same about the purchase of the Hawaiian islands or Alaska. If you don't try something nothing happens and there is no reason not to try. Truman had that idea but that was before all the hate.
As for the deficit increasing, that will only get worse because, unlike a business, the US can just print money and no elected elite will support what it would take to not increase the deficit so we will just continue to spend beyond our means.

We didn't "buy" Hawaii. I would like to think the U.S. has progressed morally since the late 1800's but certainly not this Administration:

"Interest in HAWAII began in America as early as the 1820s, when New England missionaries tried in earnest to spread their faith. Since the 1840s, keeping European powers out of Hawaii became a principal foreign policy goal. Americans acquired a true foothold in Hawaii as a result of the SUGAR TRADE. The United States government provided generous terms to Hawaiian sugar growers, and after the Civil War, profits began to swell. A turning point in U.S.-Hawaiian relations occurred in 1890, when Congress approved the MCKINLEY TARIFF, which raised import rates on foreign sugar. Hawaiian sugar planters were now being undersold in the American market, and as a result, a depression swept the islands. The sugar growers, mostly white Americans, knew that if Hawaii were to be ANNEXED by the United States, the tariff problem would naturally disappear. At the same time, the Hawaiian throne was passed to QUEEN LILIUOKALANI, who determined that the root of Hawaii's problems was foreign interference. A great showdown was about to unfold.

Annexing Hawaii
In January 1893, the planters staged an uprising to overthrow the Queen. At the same time, they appealed to the United States armed forces for protection. Without Presidential approval, marines stormed the islands, and the American minister to the islands raised the stars and stripes in HONOLULU. The Queen was forced to abdicate, and the matter was left for Washington politicians to settle. By this time, Grover Cleveland had been inaugurated President. Cleveland was an outspoken anti-imperialist and thought Americans had acted shamefully in Hawaii. He withdrew the annexation treaty from the Senate and ordered an investigation into potential wrongdoings. Cleveland aimed to restore Liliuokalani to her throne, but American public sentiment strongly favored annexation.

The matter was prolonged until after Cleveland left office. When war broke out with Spain in 1898, the military significance of Hawaiian naval bases as a way station to the SPANISH PHILIPPINES outweighed all other considerations. President William McKinley signed a joint resolution annexing the islands, much like the manner in which Texas joined the Union in 1845. Hawaii remained a territory until granted statehood as the fiftieth state in 1959."

SKUDRUNNER: "Would you feel the same about the purchase of the Hawaiian islands or Alaska. If you don't try something nothing happens and there is no reason not to try."

Trumpers try to justify Trump's immature tantrums, but in this case your example, skud, doesn't work.

The PM of Denmark and the Greenlanders emphatically said NO! to Trump's preposterous bid to buy Greenland, the PM saying that the days of buying and selling people are over, and that's a good thing.

When Trump's offer was rejected, Trump acted like the spoiled little snot that he is and cancelled his state visit to Denmark.

You and the other Trump apologists don't seem to understand what an awful embarrassment this maniac is to America. There is no "Whataboutism" in this situation.

PS How do you think Trump was going to pay for this purchase if the Danes and the Greenlanders agreed? We have a ONE TRILLION DOLLAR deficit now, thanks to Trump's reckless policies.

Never again can Republicans claim to be fiscal conservatives. Or even moral, as long as they continue to support this malignant narcissist and immoral pig.

Thank you, Possumlady for that info on Hawai'i!

Ms Shaw, None of our elected elite either republican or democrat can hold to be fiscally responsible or fiscally conservative. It would take to much courage for a politician to do what it would take to have a balanced budget and it will never happen.
PL, thanks for the history lesson because it was spell binding. Are you going to publish something about Alaska.
