GUEST POST BY DAVE MILLER

Recently Skud, a frequent commenter here at PE responded to me on one of Shaw’s posts.

I’ve chosen to respond to him in a dedicated post, because of how his response was full of what are tired right wing talking points, devoid of facts and mostly unfounded conjecture.

 See what you think…

Skud… Rev, You said combat the lies but it was the democrats who pushed defund the police.

Dave… This is a good example of what I see from conservatives on a daily basis. You take a few people who might support something, and extrapolate it to the entire party.

The leader of the Democrats, Joe Biden, has forcefully rejected the idea of defunding the police. Leaders within the African American wing of the party, for example Jim Clyburn and Al Sharpton have also dismissed the idea. Latino Democrats don’t support the defund movement either.

Now, can you find Democrats who do support the defund movement? Of course. But the point here is this… when the Democratic Party was faced with an extreme viewpoint, as a party their leaders came out and spoke against it. This effectively marginalized that viewpoint.

You should contrast their approach to an extreme viewpoint like Defund the Police with how the GOP handled another extreme viewpoint, Stop the Steal. Not only did they not denounce it, they promoted it and continue to do so, to the detriment of our country.

Skud… It is the democrats who are responsible for rising fuel prices with their hate oil movement.

Dave… I’m glad Skud that you are helping drive up ratings by staying fixated on FOX News talking points. Oil prices rise for many reasons. In this case, the recent run up is a product of many of different causes. I know like many conservatives like you prefer binary thinking, but it doesn’t work when it comes to oil.

Oil prices rise and fall on supply and demand. US oil companies during the pandemic, when demand was low and oil literally went into negative territory, shuttered wells across the country. Also, with that low demand, Big Oil chose not to develop new oil fields or explore for new oil sources.

Now as America emerges from the pandemic, demand around the world for oil has risen and the oil companies are behind in raising production. It takes months to restart those shuttered wells. But also factoring in here is a reluctance by Big Oil to increase production because, wait for it, rising prices bring higher profits, which their mostly American stockholders on the right and the left, demand.

Couple that with an unprovoked war by Russia, a leading world oil producer and you have incredible volatility in the world oil market. And it is that world oil market where prices are set.

All of that is before we even get to the over 9000 oil leases the US Government has approved for Big Oil that are not being drilled and we have a recipe for disaster as it relates to prices.

Skud… Biden is in a no win with Ukraine and whatever he does is not going to be enough. As a country and world we have let russia [sic] build back bigger and badder so shame on us. When someone said russia [sic] is 20 years ago that set the tone for the country, ignore them and they will melt. Problem is that didn't happen. We spent 4 years blaming them for causing a hated candidate to lose. Now trump is being rightfully attacked but the entire focus is on him and not the world and US issues.

Dave… What would be enough Skud? A no-fly zone? That risks direct war with Russia. Would that be enough? Let’s remember, Russia has nuclear weapons.

As for the election to which you allude, yes, as I’ve said numerous times, HRC was a terrible candidate, and I did not vote for her. But the time we, as a nation, spent trying to uncover wrong doing from the Trump campaign was not a waste.

There was credible evidence of the Trump campaign colluding with the Russian government during that election. In the following election, we found even more evidence of the Trump campaign trying to use foreign governments again to influence our elections.

In fact, in the run up to that election, President Trump called the president of Ukraine and pressured him to help his campaign or lose valuable “already approved weapons.”

Sadly, people like you and other conservatives, somehow never seem to remember that it was President Trump who bears some responsibility for Ukraine not having the weapons it needs to defend itself today against the Russian invasion.

You see how so much of this is related to the former guy?

Skud… Now we need to give away more money to bring down inflation…

Dave… Who in the Democratic Party is advocating giving away money to lower inflation? There are some from the progressive wing who advocate continuing Covid related relief programs that lifted millions of children above the poverty line, but that is not related to lowering inflation.

Skud… We shouldn't remove unnecessary regulations on the oil industry to bring down costs and increase production, really. The rapid push to renewable energy and a maligning of the fossil fuels industry has helped create the current supply shortages that have sent oil and gas prices surging but of course the administration blames the industry.

Dave… That’s a pretty convoluted statement Skud. I’m not sure you are being serious or sarcastic. If you want to talk about “unnecessary regulations”, give us some examples. Since you, like a lot of the FOX News crowd and others critical of government, use that term frequently, I’m sure you have some specific examples.

It would be helpful for you to state them with precision, otherwise, you are just spouting  unfounded talking points. Because most liberals would agree, YES, we’d say. If the regulations are unnecessary, let’s get rid of them.

As for the supposed “rapid push” to renewable energy, count me as skeptical. It was during the Carter Admin when Democrats started talking about renewables, going so far as to install solar panel on the White House. That’s forty five years ago. If that is rapid, what would slow and deliberate be?

Your take it slower approach is similar to the protestations we heard from conservatives when it came to Civil Rights for black people in the 50’s and 60’s. We support the premise they said, but we can’t risk moving too fast because it will unsettle America.

Blame the industry? Has Big Oil ever been part of moving us away from fossil fuels? Of course not. Because they are fighting for their very life. Did Big Tobacco willfully accept limits even though they knew their product was deadly? Not at all.

Like tobacco, the use of fossil fuels are in fact harming us. That’s not blame, it’s fact.

Skud… The answer to down ballot voting is simple, people are tired of the we know better than you how to run your life and we have done such a shitty job of educating your children we deserve to lose.

Dave… Skud, you posited no solution in your word salad. I will say this as it relates to people raising their kids… there are hundreds of examples of where parents have no idea how to care for their kids and are in fact abusive. And I’m not talking about the generally accepted stuff like beatings and sexual abuse.

Is smoking in the house, in which a baby’s lungs are permanently damaged, abuse? Is a parent who abuses drugs fit to have their kids in the house? Is it wrong for a mom to feed her kids a Happy Meal everyday because it’s the only food she can afford?

As it relates to raising children, the problems out there are myriad and again, do not lend themselves to easy binary right/wrong answers or solutions.

Finally, let me say this… I am not unsympathetic to many of the issues conservatives have raised about where America is these days. Many on the right, particularly in rural America, are in a bad spot. They need help and support. They need two parties listening to them, something the Democrats have not done well.

But if we persist in seeing our issues as simply being left/right or us/them, we will never move forward. Government functions best when our two parties choose to work together for the common good.

Unfortunately, as has been true since the Gingrich Contract for America, the GOP today does not seem to want to do that. I could cite numerous examples for you, but I’ll hold that for another post.

Dave, I can't do what you just did. Respond in-depth to all the BS coming from the right. It takes tooooo long and it doesn't do much good if any at all. Bless you for trying.

Here are two interesting talks on Liberals vs conservatives.

I can't wait for skud's rebuttal. Or, as is really expected, another word salad from him.

Growing long in the tooth the realization has grown large that a very great many people simply hold beliefs that support that which they desire. There actions are then determined by their narrow self interests, regardless of truth or impact on others.

There is no escaping that in the 21st century we are indeed part of a global community, regardless of how hard anyone try's to convince themselves otherwise. The more people rationalize that this is not so the greater the risk for humanity.

Thank you for your knowledgeable, insightful post Dave. Hopefully skud will reflect deeply on your post.

Namaste

I'm expecting ol' Skud to proclaim BLM are racist Blacks brewing up a violent communist revolution, and "Marxist" CRT teaches kids to be radical leftists who hate white people and America.

Will he join the growing number of Republicans following their Orange Fuhrer's example in calling Democrats "communists", echoing a certain German party's demonizing rhetoric in the 1930's?

Got to love the famous Nazi comparison.

skudrunner said...

Rev, very nice diatribe and since you put so much time on it I will try to respond item by item. Dube and blueballs just take the easy road and attack but you presented a good effort answering my post.

1. Was it not the democrats who pushed to defund the police. Only when it became a problem for them did biden take a stance. He stood on the sidelines while cities were burned and police were attacked.

2. It was in fact the democrats who have targeted the oil industry and it was biden in 2019 who said he close oil companies. When he took the helm, what was his first action, shut down the keystone pipeline and restrict exploration on federal land. the 9000 oil leases is a good story for the uninformed but has little meaning for the real world. A lease means you can spend millions to drill a hole. If you hit oil you have to apply to build a road to transport the oil because we will not approve a pipeline. All this takes months or years and cost millions which anyone is reluctant to spend knowing the administration will shut them down in a flash. Look at the Permian Basin and how they are restricted how much they can produce.

As to me watching Fox, you follow them far more than I do because they are not something I watch. They are as biased as MSDNC and I don't watch them either.

3. Tough call because we have let russia run free for far to long. Now we are doing the same with china and that will come back to bite us. It has been proven there was no collusion with trump and russia and that was proven by the FBI. The witch hunt conducted caused the speaker of the house to rip up a SOTU address by s sitting president and take her eye off a deadly virus. We both agree trump deserves what he gets and that will come in time.

Remember it was the person I cannot name who said russia was past history and they pose no threat. And he was the smartest person on the planet.

Part two to follow

skudrunner said...

Part two

4. Joe Biden read We need to pass BBB to bring down inflation. BBB is nothing but a huge give away program with billions in pork and little in productive spend. Infrastructure spending is needed, paying baby sitters is not.

5. Never been associated with business especially the oil business have you. You need a federal permit to fart much less get anything done. Study after study not because of the environmental impact but to make a bureaucrats job more secure. I know of very few who are opposed to beneficial regulations but the government burdens companies with so much manutia that the costs and delays are enormous. Do you really believe the vaccine would have been produced in record time if the federal regulation were not relaxed. Remember it was the democrats that said it would take up to four years and with them in charge it would have.

Everything is about electric vehicles and renewable forms of energy. I live in a flyover state and duracell cars are just not practical plus I don't want to spend 60K on a four seat anything. The majority of working Americans can't afford a battery car. It is a shell game because it takes as much non renewable energy (oil, gas, coal)to charge a battery car as it does to power a gas or diesel vehicle. I have yet to see an electric truck that can carry 25 tons coast to coast. It will probably come in time but that time is not now.

6. There are hundreds of examples of people who actually know how to parent as there are hundreds of teachers who know how to teach. The election results will show how people feel.

7. Politicians want to control their subjects. They strut around because they know what is better for you than you do. It doesn't matter if they are democrat or republican. They go in as wealthy and come out as filthy rich and they didn't do that being honest and working for their subjects. They haven't functioned and worked together for a few decades because both sides would rather blame the other than find a solution. It is the republicans who have more crazies in office and the democrats who have more slime. How can that change, throw out the bathwater and start fresh.

Thanks for your time and keep those in the Ukraine in your thoughts.

To skud's No. 1 point:

In cities across America on Sunday, people awoke to see shattered glass, charred vehicles, bruised bodies and graffiti-tagged buildings. Demonstrators gathered again in peaceful daytime protest of racial injustice. By evening, thousands had converged again in front of the White House, where people had rioted and set fires the night before.

President Trump stayed safely ensconced inside and had nothing to say, besides tweeting fuel on the fire.

Never in the 1,227 days of Trump’s presidency has the nation seemed to cry out for leadership as it did Sunday, yet Trump made no attempt to provide it.

That was by design. Trump and some of his advisers calculated that he should not speak to the nation because he had nothing new to say and had no tangible policy or action to announce yet, according to a senior administration official. Evidently not feeling an urgent motivation Sunday to try to bring people together, he stayed silent.

skud's No. 3 "It has been proven there was no collusion with trump and russia and that was proven by the FBI."

No collusion, but many, many instances where the Trump campaign accepted "help" from Russia.

Also, Trumpers conveniently forget this damning statement by the Mueller Report:

MUELLER: 'If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so'

What do you think that means? It's quite a damning statement that the Trumpublicans like to pretend was never in the Mueller Report.

skudrunner said...

No collusion was proven. Did it happen, who knows but it was never proven. The facts are that pelosi tore up a presidential state of the union address that specifically mentioned a virus. She was so consumed by hate she invited everyone to celebrate because the virus was a hoax.

On the Mueller report they never said he did commit a crime so moot point. As much as the democrats hate it, trump is not supported by the majority of republicans and few if any independents.

Shaw Kenawe said...

skud, try reading or listening to sources other than the ones you get your questionable information from.

"The facts are that pelosi tore up a presidential state of the union address that specifically mentioned a virus."

Speaker Pelosi tore up a COPY of a SOTU speech. It was not a legal record of the speech. But when you get your information from skewed sources, I wouldn't expect you to know that fact.

Legal experts say no laws were broken. They said it was not an original government document, but Pelosi’s copy of the speech.

Steven Aftergood, a records expert at the private Federation of American Scientists, said: “Legally, this is a non-issue. Pelosi was expressing contempt for the president’s speech, and her views are constitutionally protected.” He said her torn-up pieces of the speech might themselves be considered a new record of historical value.

Laurence Tribe, a constitutional law professor at Harvard University, said Pelosi did not violate 18 U.S. Code Section 2071, the federal law defining the deliberate destruction of an official record that has been filed with a court or other government agency — a felony punishable by a prison term and by forfeiture of office.

Why did you bring up this non-issue? She did nothing illegal. Yet I've read nothing from you about Trump stealing documents from the WH and taking them to Mar-a-Largo, a good deal of them were "Top Secret" docs that he had no right to take.

Really, skud, I let you give your take on current events, but more often than not, it's not well researched and often false.

Why bring up this Pelosi event, and ignore the real crime Trump committed?

Dave Dubya said...

HI, Anonymous Jerry! Thanks for the love.

Skud should learn about the vast difference in criminal charges between Democratic and Republicans administrations.

And which politicians want to control/limit women's reproductive freedom, public education and public healthcare.

You can count the "defund the police" Democrats on one hand, but the Republicans who embrace Trump's Big Lie number in the millions.

Looks like Biden's "war on oil" isn't quite so rampant either:

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/mar/09/joe-biden/fact-checking-bidens-claim-there-are-9000-unused-o/

Biden has a point that the U.S. produced more during his first year than Trump’s first year.
During Biden’s first year in office, the U.S. produced an average of about 11 million barrels of crude oil per day compared to Trump’s 9 million barrels per day in his first year. The average barrels of crude oil produced per day spiked during Trump’s subsequent years, swelling to almost 12.3 million in 2019.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration in January forecasted that U.S. oil production will average 12.4 million barrels per day during 2023, surpassing the record high for domestic crude oil production set in 2019.

Skud,
1. No Dem. running for federal office advocated defunding police. Some ran on reallocating funds for things like sending a mental health professional with police to situations that require one. Better training in use of force, ending qualified immunity, etc. Biden came out immediately against defunding and against violent protest. He held no office and had no authority so what do you mean he stood on the sidelines? BTW, I live in Mpls. It's not the hellscape some have tried to portray it.

2. Biden said he'd close oil co.s? Citation, please. The keystone XL pipeline would increase Canadian tar sands (bitumen) oil to gulf coast refineries and shipped off to the highest bidder. It has nothing to do with domestic production. The only place I could find that is even trying to restrict roads to oil reserves is in remote areas of Alaska. Any restrictions on Permian basin won't take affect till 2023. Biden has issued more leases per/mo. than Trump. Oil co.s have invested in stock buy backs not drilling. They are making record profits. Unless you think Biden should nationalize (control means of production) oil, not much can be done. You don't know what you are talking about. Do a little research on how the world oil market works. I'm sure that'll happen.

3. And comment 9:55 AM. 10 counts of obstruction. DOJ doesn't indict sitting presidents. Trump spent 4 years fellating tyrants. Vlad was his fave.

I'll skip to 7. We get it skud, besides being willfully ignorant your just a trolling cynic.

Thanks for the post, Dave.

Dube, My recollection was that 2019 th country was going strong and 2020 was during the great shutdown where no one went anywhere. Gas usage and production would be down and as we started up again consumption would go up.

Ms. Shaw, trump is being charged for his behavior while pelosi is not criticized. What she did was not illegal but it was totally disrespectful to the office of the POTUS no matter who was sitting and showed little to no class. I never remember anyone getting the original but getting a copy. I heard about trump taking documents and for that he should be tried and convicted. Remember it was pelosi who invited everyone down for a party during covid.

We have a history in the country of not electing the brightest just the ones who spend the most. I would like to see that change but as long as they spend millions to control our lives , it won't. Nice thing about being an independent is I can vote for the best candidate if there ever is one.

Craig,

You are correct about de-funding the police much like global warming became climate change. Omar, from your very own state, Pressley, Sanders, Gillibrand, Tlaib, Marvelous Maxine, Bush are just a few who started out with de-funding the police and one from your state wanted to get rid of police. That later changed to reallocation of funds and tasks when the movement became toxic. Biden sat on the sidelines and said nothing until pushed to comment, much the same as the riots. No there was nothing he could do but some think his opinions matter.

Regarding Biden attacking the oil companies, at least he was upfront about it prior to the election. The biden increased leases is straight from CNN/MSDNC playbook and of course Psaki spin. I assume you have no idea what it takes to make those leases productive because issuing a lease is a several year project to get production going, nice try at insulting me.

Text from the 2019 debates
Trump: “Would you close down the oil industry?”
Biden: “Yes. I would transition.”
Trump: “That is a big statement.”
Biden: “That is a big statement.”
Trump: “Why would you do that?”
Biden: “Because the oil industry pollutes, significantly. … Because it has to be replaced by renewable energy over time, over time. And I’d stop giving to the oil industry, I’d stop giving them federal subsidies.”

Like most posts on any blog you do the research that fits your narrative. The differences we have is I did not go to the Psaki school of spin and I don't insult those with different opinions even if they are stupid.

Joe Biden: (23:12)
By the way, I have a transition from the old industry, yes.

Donald Trump: (23:15)
Oh, that’s a big statement.

Joe Biden: (23:15)
I will transition. It is a big statement.

Donald Trump: (23:17)
That’s a big statement.

Joe Biden: (23:18)
Because I would stop.

Why would you do that?

Joe Biden: (23:21)
Because the oil industry pollutes, significantly.

Oh, I see. Okay.

Here’s the deal-

Donald Trump: (23:25)
That’s a big statement.

Joe Biden: (23:26)
Well if you let me finish the statement, because it has to be replaced by renewable energy over time, over time, and I’d stopped giving to the oil industry, I’d stop giving them federal subsidies. You won’t get federal subsidies to the gas, oh, excuse me to solar and wind.

Donald Trump: (23:45)
Yeah.

Joe Biden: (23:46)
Why are we giving it to oil industry?

Donald Trump: (23:47)
We actually give it to solar and wind. That’s maybe the biggest statement. In terms of business, that’s the biggest statement.

Donald Trump: (24:04)

Kristen Welker: (24:05)
… and then I have to get to the final question. Vice President Biden.

Joe Biden: (24:07)
He takes everything out of context, but the point is, look, we have to move toward net zero emissions. The first place to do that by the year 2035 is in energy production, by 2050 totally.

At no point does Biden say he's closing down oil co.s. Oil co.s are transitioning to integrated energy co.s on their own. Resilient hydrocarbons in the short term, hydrogen and biofuels. There's no long term future in oil and they know it.

You are correct about de-funding the police much like global warming became climate change. GW and CC are two related but different things. One didn't become the other. In 1975 Wallace Broecker synthesized his and others’ related research in the journal Science in a piece called “Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?”. The abstract is available online.

Ilhan Omar is my Congresswoman. This exchange took place less than a month after G. F. was murdered. “Just to be clear, you're not saying that there's nothing that takes it place?” Tapper asked.

“Absolutely not. I think that's really where the conversation is going wrong,” Omar responded. “No one is saying that the community is not going to be kept safe. No one is saying crimes will not be investigated. No one is saying that we are not going to have proper response when community members are in danger.”

“What we are saying is the current infrastructure that exists as policing in our city should not exist anymore and we can't go about creating a different process with the same infrastructure in place,” she added.

Reallocating funds to restructure law enforcement is a little more nuanced than just defunding police. Repubs took advantage of that stupid slogan. An unforced error by those who want to clean up law enforcement. The police in this area keep killing unarmed citizens and just killed a good guy with a legal gun serving a no knock warrant. If they just stopped doing that, there would be no need to do something different.

That's not spin, it's facts. Are you blaming Biden for the oil co.s not drilling on 9000 public land leases? You were right when you said production dropped off when covid caused a decline in demand. Now they can't keep up with demand. They could have been drilling and capping knowing the economy would start to recover. They decided on stock buy backs and dividend payments. I know what it takes to explore, tap and refine a barrel. What can Biden do about that? Gas prices are up all over the world. Biden Can't make U.S. producers keep their oil here.
