Meanwhile, in one of America's "pro-family" states:

"The bill’s sponsor, Tom Leatherwood (R-Arlington) says the law being considered would add a new marriage option for Tennesseans, according to WKRN.

'So, all this bill does is give an alternative form of marriage for those pastors and other individuals who have a conscientious objection to the current pathway to marriage in our law,' says Leatherwood.

Missing from the bill are age requirements, opening the door for possible child marriages. Something the bill sponsor acknowledged during a Children and Family Affairs subcommittee.

Imagine removing age requirements for marriage, making marriage to a child of any age legal.

Here's a Tennessee Republican who began grooming his now wife when she was as young as 12 or 13-years-old and then married her the second he could. He was 46-years-old when they married.

Meanwhile:

We wonder how far into the sewer the current Trumpublican Party will go to dig up filth, and then their Congressional representatives gleefully show us.

While not agreeing it was necessary, the TN GOP did finally amend the proposed law to state that married couples had to be at least 18 years old.

Now I know conservatives will say "no harm, no foul" but the question remains...

In a world where current US Congresspeople and Senators call Democrats pedophiles for supporting Judge Brown for the SCOTUS, why the silence from the party when one of their own proposed a law that would have made it legal for a 30 year old man to marry a 14 year old girl?

What is the impulse that drives a law like that, and the authors desire to initially defend it when criticized by people who said it would endanger children?

It should not be lost that the "need" for this law was based on the desire of the TN GOP to deny gay couples the right to marry. Or as some in the TN party said, a need to "defend marriage."

Pro family indeed...

Let's look at the Marjorie Taylor Greene hit parade on this issue...

According to many news sources, her own tweets and video, here's what we can find from the last few days alone... all from a sitting US Congresswoman.

GOP U.S. Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Mitt Romney of Utah are “pro-pedophile” because they’re voting to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Really? Mitt Romney?

Republican supporters of President Biden's Supreme Court nominee are “pro-pedophile” too.

“The Democrats are the party of pedophiles...”

and

The Democrats’ identity “is the most disgusting, horrible, evil thing happening in our country,”

No hyperbole here from her. Also, no logic.

If we harken back to the fifties, this is the same language we saw from the then openly racist Democratic Party before they took steps to reform themselves.

The question we should have now is whether the current GOP will take similar steps to repentance and reform as the Dems did years ago.

Don't hold your breath.

I have always been for an age requirement to marry but I think the minimum age should be 30 and a marriage needs to be renewed every ten years. Divorce is about 50% of marriages and it is a destructive act so why not have to renew after 10 years and save some pain and suffering maybe up to 50%.

MTG and her ilk are the filth they falsely claim another is. It seems a great number of the current crop of GOP reps and senators are not much better. Which says what about their constituents? tRump and the uneducated he loves so much are primarily responsible for the DECLINING MORALS and ETHICAL STANDARDS in America today.

Seems the holy rollers are far from holy. What a surprise, eh?

OT:

fun fact: more American schoolchildren have been killed by guns than by learning about gay people

Marrying children/baby rape/ is fine with right wingers. Just don't let the gay couple marry. Freaking hypocritical assholes, that's all that's left of the GQP and the rabid right.

There's no way that could be enforced. I agree that for today, 30 years old is a good age to get married.

Yes, good idea in theory. But I don't see it happening.

BluebullAmerica Conservatives traditionally have been for getting the government out of our personal lives, except where it concerns women's wombs, other people's sexual orientation, and passing laws that favor dirty old men! LOL!

Dave and Anonymous, It appears that MTG and Lauren Boebert are in a race to see who can be more foolish and get the most attention.

I just read the comment from Tom Cotten. To quote Bugs Bunny "what a maroon!" Yes, if she lived in Germany and was a public defender (as she was for two years), she could have defended "nazis". That is what public defenders DO! Everyone is due their day in court, and entitled to legal representation, even Nazis, EVEN trump!! Does he not believe in due process?
