Wouldn't you love to have been in that chair and the one to pwn the arrogant ass, Alaska GOP Representative Don Young?
Good one, Professor Brinkley!
"Ever wanted to tell a congressman in person that they work for you, the taxpayer?
Well, Douglas Brinkley, a Rice University professor, certainly did, although perhaps the middle of a House hearing wasn't the best time and place.
At a Natural Resources Committee hearing Friday on oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) mistakenly addressed the professor as 'Dr. Rice' while calling his testimony 'garbage.'
Brinkley interrupted, saying: 'It's Dr. Brinkley, Rice is a university,' and 'I know you went to Yuba [Community College in California] and couldn't graduate — '
Then it was Young's turn to interrupt. 'I'll call you anything I want to call you when you sit in that chair,' he told the witness. 'You just be quiet.'
Brinkley countered: 'You don't own me. I pay your salary. I work for the private sector and you work for the taxpayer.'

We, the taxpayer, may pay his salary, but most of his money comes from the 1%. In Alasaka, that means oil money.
Which makes a good case for some sort of means testing for government employees. If they are millionaires anyway, why waste money on giving them handouts?
And surely eliminate the Congressional pensions right now. A lot of money saved. Let them live on Social Security. And if they cry that they can't live on Social Security... then what about the regular (non-ruling) people who try? And whose fault is it, anyway? Theirs. They regulate Social Security. So it is their fault if they can't live on it.
An incredibly arrogant piece of shit, that congress critter. How dare he make a comment like that! A video of that exchange would make an excellent TV advert when the criminal is up for re-election.
.
Ah, the dr5ama of politics...
Is anyone thinking clearly these days?
"The Ominous Parallels."
RN,
Sorry.
This is not Germany of the 1930s, and Mr. Obama is not looking to mass murder people for their religious beliefs or their lack of racial purity.
However, the darling of the crazy right, Ann Coulter, did open her ugly maw recently and suggested we treat the OWS like the protesters at Kent State were treated, IOW, shoot them, and, she suggested in her bloody way, get rid of them.
She's on the Right, BTW, not a leftie, and SHE's suggesting a sort of "final solution" to those pesky people exercising their Constitutionally guaranteed First Amendment rights.
People like her always damn America in subtlely disgusting ways, and then point fingers at Mr. Obama's ex-pastor as proof of how Mr. Obama is anti-American.
I can't think of anything more American than protesting, and I can't think of anyone more destructive of what America stands for than Ann Coulter.
God I'm going soft. I'm agreeing with Dmarks again. Not so much on means testing. But serving in Congress should be just that: service. Not a career and position you can use to get rich while telling constituents bullshit you think they want to hear.
"Then it was Young's turn to interrupt. "I'll call you anything I want to call you when you sit in that chair," he told the witness. "You just be quiet."
Shaw, I do believe you misinterpreted my comment.
I realize it is not 1930 Germany. The Ominous Parallels is a book detailing how the US is if anything approaching fascism rather than what is typically viewed as socialism.
In Mr. Young's comment I see arrogance and a bit of power mentality. Perhaps you missed I was in essential agreement with your post.
I apologize for my lack of clarity.
PS: I certainly made no reference to the President in my comment.
By the way, The Ominous Parallels was writes in 1980 or 1981. Mr. Obama was just a teenager I believe.
"... exercising their Constitutionally guaranteed First Amendment rights."
A given. However, the Constitutionally guaranteed rights do not give them the right to infringe on the rights of others. There are certainly documented cases where this has occurred. By far more than ever occurred with the Tea Party activists.
RN,
The reference to the book "The Omnious Parallels" led me to believe you thought this country was headed in the direction of 1930s Germany, and because I've seen umpteen images of Mr. Obama as Hitler, I thought you were blaming the Obama administration for the march toward fascism.
Your explanation corrects that.
But let's not forget this quote [tried to check who originally wrote it, because I've read it is NOT Sinclair Lewis]:
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."
Shared.
"When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." Sinclair Lewis

Don't know whether Brainy Quotes has attributed it correctly or not.
However the quote is a good one. Thanks for reminding me of it.
Boy, howdy! There's a quote to memorize!

Who cares what the shitbag commie egghead's name is. Not like there's any chance he ever knew who his daddy/sperm donor was.
One thing I'll say in defense of Rice University is that they don't let the jocks slide. They have to study, and meet an acceptable GPA.
Rice's basketball team is all White.
