GOT HIM! AND HE'S ALIVE!!!!!

People are all over the North End screaming for joy!  The way they cheer when one of our teams wins a championship.

It. Is. Over.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our law enforcement people who worked so hard and so selflessly through these difficult days.

You are all awesome!  The best!

I'll have something more to say later.

Right now, I'm relieved it's over.

This is important to remember:

Richard B. Bernstein:

Now that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is in custody, and now that other suspects are apparently in custody, let's thank Heaven that this stage of the ordeal is over. Let's be grateful for the police-work and for the heroic efforts of first responders. Most important of all, let's stay calm and not start slavering for vengeance. Let's let due process take its course. We're better than vengeance. The dead of the Marathon deserve better tribute than vengeance.

This is indeed great news. A superb job by the FBI and all other law enforcement. A grateful nation tips it hat to you all.

But... is it REALLY over? O wonder...

the stupids on the right can't say enough to make themselves look like wackos:

"The Boston Marathon bombing is an inside job. Noted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is insisting that the Boston bombing was a "false flag" operation carried out by the government. It seems unlikely that Jones' bizarre understanding of the attack will catch on. But prominent politicians, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), former Reps. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), and current Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Alan Grayson (D-Fla.), have appeared on Jones' radio show. Perhaps these latest comments will finally convince lawmakers that it's time to stop legitimizing Jones' conspiracy-mongering."

That "false flag" rubbish is quite popular among the Ron Paul cult. I also saw a post on a Paultard site claiming that the West TX explosion was caused by a missile. And don't forget the conspiratards who claimed the Newtown shooting was staged and even harassed survivors who they claimed were actors or government stooges. There is always this sludge at the bottom of the gene pool.

Back in the real world, congratulations to the police and emergency responders, who saved many lives and brought these fanatics down so quickly.

LOL Anon: I first listened to him a few weeks ago. He's a real piece of work. But it looks like from your list that a lot of left-wing politicians as well go on his program and lend him credibility.

Except for the (remote) possibility that we may learn something of protective value from this malignant, deranged child, I cannot think why anyone would be "glad" he has been captured alive.

Even if he had been killed, however, -- as would have been right and proper considering what he and his mercifully dead older brother have done -- it would not have ended the problem.

These two are merely symptomatic of a much larger threat -- a problem that chronic Mercy Freaks and Grievance Junkies are unwilling -- or perhaps unable -- to face head on.

Now that he has been capture but not killed it is time for me to avoid the news for the next several months -- or at least till the NEXT godawful Event explodes in our faces.

TV has turned us into a nation of slobbering GHOULS -- and identity of which I want no part.

TV is the new Colosseum.

I must admit that I'm of two minds that he's alive. It's going to cost a fortune to (1) treat him medically, (2) bring him to trial, and (3) to provide decades-long incarceration if he's found guilty.

---------------

I have a question: Are the people of Boston usually so appreciative of law enforcement personnel? No snark on my part.

Depends on one's definition of justice. Because of my own situation as a caregiver, my heart goes out to those so terrible injured at the Boston Marathon.

The very thought of double amputees! Their suffering and the care they will need in the long term.

Thank you FreeThinke for so clearly stating the truth. Well said.

LOL Anon,

I've never heard of Alex Jones, and from what you've posted, I'll do my best to avoid him and his cockeyed views.

Infidel753, I've known a number of "Truthers" who also believe 9/11 was carried out by the US government. It's a disease in some people to avoid the unhappy fact that there are crazy people in this world, and that a lot of them hate this country.

Free Thinke, I imagine the feds wanted him alive to get information from him and to find out if he and his brother were involved in a larger cell that planned more bombings or other attacks on the US.

AOW, the people in Boston, I believe, are like those in any other part of the country. When they've been delivered from a very dangerous and tense situation, they look to those who tirelessly and selflessly did all the work, and they show their appreciation. I know I did. There was a large police presence here in my neighborhood all day yesterday.

A lot of the Boston cops are local men and women from the neighborhoods, so in that case their relatives, friends, and neighbors are always there to show their gratitude.

I largely agree with the above.

As I already mentioned, I have great concern and empathy for the grievously injured and their caregivers, particularly the caregivers who are family members. Who is helping them? Who will help them as the years grind on?

It really does gall me that Tsarnaev's needs (medical care, help with activities of daily living, etc.) will be met indefinitely if he should be permanently disabled. Permanent disability is a real possibility if what I read this morning is true: leg and neck wounds. The maimed at the bomb sites will likely get less attention and, more importantly, less help.

I know that my point of view cannot be considered objective. But there is what's on my mind -- and has been on my mind ever since we learned how badly some were maimed. Lives ruined, I tell you!

AOW: Good point. Whatever happens to this one terrorist, it will only be a small amount of justice compared to the whole incident.

Shaw: Alex Jones is the kingpin of the prison planet, info wars sites/etc you might have heard of. He make Rush Limbaugh seem like Edward R. Murrow in comparison. Yeah, the 9/11 "truthers" are there, the Haarp chemtrail cooks, and also the insistance the Obam ordered the Newtown massacre.

...One of those odd curiosities that one of the bombers bears the name of the emperor from Samarkand who believed himself to be The Sword God...

Fouad Ajami, as usual, has the best take.

He calls these young men, "Nowhere Men," because they are caught between two cultures, neither of which they belong to.

He writes of how the 9/11 hijacker of the Shanksville plane was a partier in his native Beirut, and became radicalized in Hamburg, Germany.

It supports what >a href = "http://progressiveerupts.blogspot.com/2013/04/boston-on-lock-down-as-police-hunt.html?showComment=1366393867737#c8720522022780466469">Ducky said in an earlier thread:

"He probably lived in a no man's land separated from his Muslim roots and adrift in America."

Indeed. Ajami has written extensively on this phenomenon.

TV has been the arena for quite some time. Now we have the luxury and the opportunity to not only view instantaneously, but interactively exchange opinions with the same speed. Sorting fact from fiction will increasingly be difficult. The internet is the new arena

Silverfiddle,
Good essay by Fouad Ajami.

I don't always agree with him, but I think that he does offer important insights.

Note this from the essay that you linked:

the Tsarnaev brothers as evidence that a nation that throws its gates wide open courts this kind of calamity. One way or the other, the matter of Islamist radicalism hovers over this episode.

Ajami also wrote this, which is very alarming:

No “intel” can find and identify this unsettled breed -- ordinary neighborhood types who step forth to do battle against a modernity, and an order, they had once yearned for.

Think about that for a minute. How many "time bombs" are waiting to go off, once there is a trigger event?

KP,
Thank you. Life in the AOW household ain't easy.

Some victims' families have some 50 years of changed lives ahead of them. Makes my heart ache!

BTW, my back is doing okay -- no pain there. But the leg and foot are more problematic than ever. The recent EMG is fine, but the stinging tinglies and the ache (neuro) plague me.

It's the human condition. It's even worse when you realize that there are many other varieties of human time bombs beside Islamic.
