Provocative new music video by Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) has people thinking about race in America.
Watch it:
Ty Burr, Boston Globe: "Is there anything more dangerously exhilarating than watching an artist coming into the fullness of his or her powers? The gifted and eccentric actor/comedian/singer/auteur Donald Glover released a new music video this week under his nom de pop Childish Gambino. It’s called “This Is America,” and it is, strictly speaking, one of the best films of 2018 to date — four minutes and four seconds of incendiary historio-cultural mind-messing that appears built to function as a closed conversation for black America and an open classroom for anyone else.
Caveat: If you can’t get past the absurdity of a 60-year-old white man weighing in on this subject, I share your ridicule. That said, “This Is America” opens a window onto a complex dance of implication and revolt, complicity, and rage. It feels like a dance of death by a cornered man; it’s also more alive than anything I’ve seen in ages.
