From Dave Miller:

These words, from President Ford, were delivered to a crowd of immigrants at a citizenship ceremony on July 5, 1976. They are words we would expect, you know, from a sitting president of the entire United States:

"I am very proud to welcome all of you as fellow citizens of the United States of America. I invite you to join fully in the American adventure and to share our common goal and our common glory. . . . You have given us a birthday present beyond price—yourselves, your faith, your loyalty, and your love. We thank you with full and friendly hearts.

The patriots of 1776 . . . wanted to build in this beautiful land a home for equal freedom and opportunity, a haven of safety and happiness, not for themselves alone, but for all who would come to us through centuries. How well they built is told by millions upon millions who came and are still coming. Immigrants came from almost everywhere, singly and in waves. . . .

Such transfusions of traditions and cultures, as well as of blood, have made America unique among nations and Americans a new kind of people. . . .

We offered citizenship to all, and we have been richly rewarded."

This administration does not believe in those words.

-FJ, Ford went on... "We have gained far, far more than we have given to the millions who made America their second homeland." I doubt you, VP Vance or many more of the Megyn Kelly crowd would say that about even legal immigrants, like you know, the Haitians.

Dave Miller said...

-FJ, here's a little something from President Reagan in his last public address. You remember Reagan, the GOP President who signed an amnesty law welcoming millions of previously "illegal immigrants".

"We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people—our strength—from every country and every corner of the world. And by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation. While other countries cling to the stale past, here in America we breathe life into dreams. We create the future, and the world follows us into tomorrow. Thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge, always leading the world to the next frontier. This quality is vital to our future as a nation. If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost."

Given that we have closed the door to immigrants, and we are losing our position of leadership in the world, maybe Reagan was onto something.

Legal Immigration is the base of this country and I don't know of anyone who is opposed to legal immigration. I do know a few people who are against unauthorized border crosser's I don't believe the founders meant we should support anyone who came here and that is the reason there are immigration laws. There was a president who said to hell with immigration laws just open the border and welcome them in and we can confiscate more money from the taxpayer to pay for the crossers support. Of course he has the support of the people who don't pay FIT and the limousine liberal crowd

-FJ... you're so cute. You think I'd post a quote, attribute it to a revered US President and not be able to source it? It's from his final address as president, given at a Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony the the White House on January 19, 1989.

I know actual quotes like these, which contradict what so many conservatives and MAGA people believe and are saying these days are difficult. But the fact is, both GOP Presidents Ford and Reagan, and even both Bushes were 100% supportive of immigrants coming to the US.

The current GOP crowd at 1600 Pennsylvania, like the rest of the Pat Buchanan inspired cabal, not so much. Legal or otherwise. I mean, unless they are white unpersecuted people from South Africa.

Dave Miller said...

If you are not aware of leaders in the GOP who are against even legal immigration, you're just not paying attention.

But I guess you could argue that those white South Africans we are bringing here for no reason is proof that people want some level of immigration.

Just not black, brown or any other color varient.

skudrunner said...

Dave, Although I am sure you are correct what I found is there are several politicians who want reduced immigration not zero. Some actually had the temerity to insist immigrants to have some skill so they are not totally dependent on the taxpayer, shocking.

Then there are some who want open borders so the people coming in will vote for their party as a thank you.

The best thing that could happen is our elected elite go to work and design a comprehensive immigration policy. Of course that won't happen because they would have to do their job and work together.

Now can you please provide one politician who has said they want zero immigration?

Les Carpenter said...

What a complete crock, skud.

skudrunner said...

Les, Instead of just dive bombing my post why don't you tell the readers what I said that was a crock. Was it that some politicians propose a skill, was it some want to reduce immigration or was it politicians don't do their job.
Tell us from your enlightened position what is it I said that was a crock.

Dave Miller said...

Rep. Chip Roy introduced the PAUSE Act, a piece of legislation explicitly designed to freeze all legal immigration to the United States.

Let's start there.

Trump has preposed complete bans of any immigration, from a host of nations. Not a total ban for sure, but pretty darn huge. All while increasing immigration from non persecuted white, not black, South Africans.

A number of other politicians from the GOP, such as Lauren Boebert have also echoed Chip Roy's demand for a total ban, for now.

Les Carpenter said...

Just playing your game skud. Just playing your game. Just more direct than yours.

Grey One talks sass said...

I've been trapped inside because, ow, too hot! and you have a game? This reader plays the game and here is what skud said that was a crock and provide my reasoning why for those playing along at home.

skud says: "Then there are some who want open borders so the people coming in will vote for their party as a thank you."

My reply - who are these 'some'? I ask because I do my research and I've yet to find a politician who says such a thing - aka open borders. I think skud has been sniffing Fox adjacent propaganda because they are seeing and believing things that do not match up in reality.

skud sweetie - here's an easy fix. Just give a name of the politician who said they wanted open borders aka no borders at all. Just one, all you need. Doesn't even need to be someone on the Federal stage - State would work too but we (I) need a name please.

skud says: The best thing that could happen is our elected elite go to work and design a comprehensive immigration policy. Of course that won't happen because they would have to do their job and work together.

My reply is How soon the American populace forgets because there was a bipartisan plan on immigration which truly was bipartisan because no one got all the items on their punch list. What, you don't remember? That's because Trump got his feels in a bunch that his name wouldn't be on the deal so like the tyrant he is he killed it. How do you not remember this skud? Oh, because it's a fact and you don't like inconvenient facts.

Addressing skud's point above that they want legal immigration - HA!!!!

If the GOP really wanted (and I know, skud says they are independent but their words and opinions are still 100% MAGA so make of that what you will) legal immigrants they wouldn't have sent ICE to immigration check in appointments. (Heavy stage whisper - that's immigrants doing immigration the legal way!) If they really were OK with LEGAL Immigration they wouldn't have snatched folks who had already earned their Green Card. And I can go on but I won't because the hypocrisy oozing out of MAGA is killing me this weekend.

Last note: Weird innit that ICE only deported people of color? Almost as if immigration isn't the issue but the skin tone of those doing the migrating. It's all white though, right?

I can sum up Skud's response to you.

The Reagan "deal" on immigration was supposed to be a "one time fix" for illegal immigration... not a rolling process for legalizing illegals. The Senate did not follow through with their promises to Reagan.

As for the Haitians, the US backed assassination of Haiti's president lead to a "rolling entry date" for TPS status for Haitians. Their resettlement in Springfield was a CIA exploit.... to re-capture Haiti under US investor dominance (like all those Hillary Clinton funded projects after the original Hurricane disaster there).

skudrunner said...

Grey at least you provided a response and didn't do a fly by attack so I commend you for that. Some cannot do anything except attack but you at least questioned the things I said. You must be a Southerner because you use sweetie, something my grandmother use to say. So as a fellow Southerner I will correct some of your misconceptions.

You assume, not unusual, that my comments were directed toward just democrats. Remember I am a fiscally conservative independent and cannot support either party because they are not fiscally responsible.

J.D. Vance: During his 2022 Senate campaign, he ran television advertisements claiming that "Joe Biden's open border" was resulting in "more Democrat voters pouring into this country."

Blake Masters: During his 2022 campaign in Arizona, he argued that Democrats support looser border policies specifically to bring in and amnesty millions of illegal immigrants to win future elections.

Donald Trump and other conservative figures: Have frequently asserted that Democrats intentionally ignore border enforcement to alter the American.
electorate

Immigration reform bills have been proposed by GWB which the republicans wouldn't vote for and a bipartisan bill in 2024 which trump torpedoed. So even though it was biden who opened the border it was republicans who won't pass an immigration bill. One president had the majority in both houses and wouldn't do anything permanent just deferred action, or kick the can down the road, because it is such a controversial issue and he had bigger plans he needed support on.

Maybe if certain cities supported ICE they wouldn't have to go to the extremes they did, remember I said maybe..

Dave Dubya said...

Allow me to summarize and paraphrase all of Skud's comments.

"Everything FOX(R), Trump, and Republicans say about Democrats, the economy, foreign policy, war, and the country is true."

There you go, Skud. I hope that saves you some time.

President Ronald Reagan’s 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) was explicitly designed as a one-time measure. The goal was to "wipe the slate clean" by legalizing existing undocumented immigrants while establishing strict enforcement measures to prevent future unauthorized immigration. The legislation, often referred to as a three-legged stool, rested on these core components:

Legalization (The "One-Time Fix"): The law granted legal status to roughly 2.7 million unauthorized immigrants who had lived in the United States since before January 1, 1982, allowing them to apply for temporary and eventually permanent legal status.

Employer Sanctions: To prevent future waves of unauthorized migration, the law introduced civil and criminal penalties for employers who knowingly hired undocumented workers.

Border Security: The legislation increased funding for border enforcement and authorized a major expansion of Border Patrol operations.

Why it did not serve as a permanent fix: The "one-time fix" failed to achieve its long-term goal of halting illegal immigration for several reasons, and the undocumented population grew significantly in the decades that followed.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Both Conservative (Republican) and Liberal (Democratic) administrations failed to address the problems with the border and undocumented immigrants. It's not just a Republican/Democratic failure. IT'S AN AMERICAN GOVERNMENT FAILURE.

"Why it did not serve as a permanent fix: The "one-time fix" failed to achieve its long-term goal of halting illegal immigration for several reasons, and the undocumented population grew significantly in the decades that followed:

Weakened Employer Sanctions: The provisions meant to penalize employers were heavily weakened during legislative negotiations and easily circumvented using fraudulent documents.

Unaddressed Legal Immigration: The bill failed to create sufficient legal pathways for future low-skilled workers to enter the country, driving ongoing unauthorized migration.

Lack of Ongoing Enforcement: Subsequent administrations and Congresses frequently failed to follow through on the strict interior enforcement and workplace checks mandated by the bill."

Shaw... notice that -F "let's move the goal posts" J wondered where I dug up the Reagan quote and then just ignores our former president's words. And changes the subject to another BS issue for us to comment on.

He knows the system is broken, he's help break it. As has every other MAGA supporting voter. The Dems have stood ready to fix the system once and for all for decades, thwarted each time by the GO MAGA P.

skudrunner said...

Dube, Thanks for your comprehensive review. With your outstanding talent you should go to work for the federal government. They are always looking for a few good people and I feel certain you would fit in.

Dave Miller said...

Grey... here's something interesting. There are many, like DAC, the Dem House Candidate from New York who is on record saying we need 100% open borders, we should not deport anyone, not even murderers and we in fact should defund the police. Of course many of her views have been condemned by many on the left, but we have our extremists too. The difference is we will call those ppl out. A good example now is Mr Plattner of Maine. Dems are already calling for him to step aside as a candidate because he's been accused of sexual assault.

That's what Dems do. If in doubt, see Franken, Al in the dictionary of politics.

The GOP elects them. See Trump, Donald in the dictionaries of felonies and proven sexual assaults.

But back to the extreme left views. We also have some who believe legal US residents, or in some extreme cases people here illegally, should be able to vote in local elections.

But the Dems are trying to build a big tent, not a cult. And because of that, not everyone has to agree about everything.

Notice Skud asked for me to provide ONE politician who is in favor of ending even legal immigration.

Let's all note, he's yet to acknowledge that once again, I don't say stuff without the receipts.

Joe Conservative said...

Stood ready to "Fix the system"? Starting enforcement at the 5,000 a day level? That's 1.8 million illegals a year BEFORE enforcement begins. That number's bigger than legal immigration Yeah, that was a "fix"... @@

The statutory baseline quota for permanent legal immigration to the United States is 675,000 visas per year. However, this is a flexible cap. Because certain high-demand categories are completely exempt from limits, the U.S. regularly issues far more green cards—for instance, the U.S. granted 1.36 million green cards in Fiscal Year 2024.

Dave Miller said...

Skud and Dave... So, I loaded Skud's comments into -FJ's favorite AI, Google Gemini... and I asked if his comments were accurate. Here's what it said...

"Unlike your previous friend [-FJ] —who manipulated information to push extreme, conspiratorial narratives—this friend is posting a balanced, fact-grounded argument. They clearly identify as a fiscal conservative independent, and they back up their claims with real historical examples that fairly criticize both political parties for treating the immigration system like a political football rather than passing a permanent law."

So at least on this, Skud has done pretty well.

At least IMHO, and Google's too.

Here's a list of failed attempts at Immigration reform since 2000...

-DREAM Act (2001)
-McCain-Kennedy Bill / Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (2006)
-Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (2007)
-DREAM Act (2010)
-"Gang of Eight" Bill / Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (2013)
-Schumer-Rounds-Collins Amendment (2018)
-Secure and Succeed Act (2018)
-Farm Workforce Modernization Act (2019)
-Farm Workforce Modernization Act (2021)
-H.R. 2 / Secure the Border Act (2023)
-Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act (2024)

Four of these have been scuttled by GOP pressure.
Two have been scuttled by the Dems.
Three others have shared responsibility.

You and I can argue all day about the details, and never agree. But Congress has tried to make changes, some better than others. But over all, the GOP is supporting positions not favored by a majority of Americans, but by a larger percentage of their base. And has worked harder to stop immigration legislation.
