We like tough guys in Alabama.

Listen to the stories repeated around this state. Bear Bryant playing football on a broken leg. Or that time Bo Jackson ran over The Boz.

We love NASCAR fights, gritty basketball and light-em-up football hits. John Wayne movies would win Oscars this year if the votes came from this state, and Jack Bauer would be the Secretary of Defense.

We love tough.

We just have no idea what it is anymore.

That thought struck me the other day as I read through the comments on a Facebook post, in which a couple of “friends” were going on and on about the attributes of president-elect Donald Trump. Among the attributes was, of course, Trump’s toughness.

He’s going to put China in its place. He’s going to tell those radical Muslims to pound sand. He’ll turn the Middle East into a parking lot if they keep it up.

You could almost hear the “Freebird” guitar solo playing in the background and see the American flag waving in the too-hot-for-you breeze.

And there’s the problem: we in Alabama – in a number of conservative strongholds across America – have somehow started confusing bravado with actual strength.

That’s how we ended up electing a schoolyard bully as our president.

And make no mistake, Trump is the classic American bully – a man who uses petty insults and false bravado to mask his incompetence and shortcomings. A man so thin-skinned that he sits up late at night tweeting insults at a sketch comedy show.

Because insults and mindless threats are easy.

It’s hard to detail during debates how you plan to defeat ISIS or fix the economy. It’s much easier to refer to a fellow candidate as “Little Marco” or “Lyin’ Ted” or “Crooked Hillary.”

However, the most startling thing about all of this is that a large segment of the population lapped up that childish, immature behavior, considering it a good thing that a candidate wasn’t conforming, wasn’t too politically correct. Somehow, Trump’s willingness to voice the never-ending stream of insults, wild promises and insanely unconstitutional ideas made him seem tough.

He’s going to be tough on crime (which is a code word for “the blacks”). No more Black Lives Matter marches under Trump’s watch. He’s going to shut that down, get tough on … um, crime. He’s going to make it so it’s OK for all of us to use the N-word again.  And Mexicans, well, adios. We’re gonna build that wall and then Trump – ‘cause he don’t take no crap – is gonna make Mexico pay for it! Wooooo!

Tough. Tough. Tough.

If Trump started driving a jacked-up pickup and put one of Saban’s straw hats on, hell, we’d put him on our money … when we get it again.

Of course, none of it was a sign of strength.

Not of physical strength. Not of strength of mind. Not of strength of integrity.

In reality, it was all a sign of weakness — one that should make us all fear for the future of this country and the weak nation we could become under such a weak leader.

Because by now, we should all know what strength looks like. We’ve seen it almost daily from the man who has resided in the White House for the past eight years.

You think Trump has it tough because a union leader in Indiana called him a liar?

Try having your heritage questioned daily. Try having your love of country questioned. Try having your religious faith questioned.

Try having your young daughters be the targets of racists who would belittle a child because her skin is darker.

Try walking into a school where 20 kindergarteners were slaughtered, meeting personally with each of the broken and distraught parents, providing comfort in the midst of a real-life horror scene, and then have to answer questions about the authenticity of your tears.

Try dealing with a nation split by race, balancing the very real concerns of people who have been ignored for far too long with the dangerous tendency to paint too broadly the good men who have sworn to protect us, and then having it all placed at your feet because you just refused to stop being black yourself.

Try handling it all – on top of being the leader of the free world and president of a country whose economy was on the verge of collapse – with a level of grace and humility that we are unlikely to ever see again.

That’s true strength. That’s a true tough guy worthy of admiration.

That so many can’t see that, I’m afraid, is an indication of America’s weakness.

But this time around, they said, the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) was likely to succeed due to a Republican-controlled House and the backing of President-elect Donald Trump.

Since ancient times, people have celebrated the solstice and observed it with many different cultural and religious traditions. Some of them survive to the present day—though not always in the form you might expect. The term solstice means "sun stands still." 

On the year's two solstices (winter and summer) the sun appears to halt in its incremental journey across the sky and change little in position during this time. Many more people observe the solstice while participating in modern holidays—even if they do not always realize the connection. 

 The Solstice Christmas Connection

A white supremacist website called The Daily Stormer has posted a call to "TAKE ACTION" against Jewish people in Whitefish, providing personal contact information and urging a "troll storm" against them. 

The story claims the "vicious, evil race" has harmed the Whitefish business of Richard Spencer's mother. It quotes a story from the British newspaper Daily Mail that said Sherry Spencer "said she is being forced to sell a building she owns in the small town because residents are rebelling against her son." 

The site posted phone numbers, email addresses, and Twitter handles for the Whitefish residents it alleges are harassing Sherry Spencer, along with a disclaimer that it opposes violence. Richard Spencer is president and director of the National Policy Institute, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified as a hate group. 

The institute is "dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States, and around the world." 

Spencer said Friday he's thinking about running for the U.S. House seat that would be vacated if U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke of Montana is confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump's choice to head the Department of Interior. 

The Daily Stormer website has a tab called "Jewish Problem." It asks for donations from readers with a plea: "These bastards are always at our throats."

General Mike Flynn, Donald Trump’s pick to serve as his national security adviser, met several weeks ago with Heinz-Christian Strache, the head of Austria’s anti-immigrant Freedom Party, which was founded after World War II by former Nazis. 

 Strache described the meeting, which was first reported by The New York Times, on his Facebook page, where he also announced signing a “cooperation pact” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although the Times story focused on the Russia pact, the Flynn-Strache meeting is at least as significant. Austrians’ support for far-right parties has increased significantly over the past 15 years. 

Strache’s Freedom Party received 35 percent of the vote in this year’s parliamentary elections and narrowly lost the race for Austria’s ceremonial presidency earlier this month. “This is not just any opposition party: It is one with Nazi sympathies,” said Daniel Serwer, a former state department official who’s now a professor at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. 

“Nor is Flynn any national security adviser. He is a documented conspiracy propagator. His long-term strategy colleague, Steve Bannon, is an ethnic nationalist and anti-Semite. The president-elect is an anti-Muslim and anti-immigration bigot.”

I've brought this post forward to today from its original date of 12/14 because "Anonymous" left a comment last night accusing me of being a "coastal elite," and not a "real American."  (See the discussion in the comment section.)  Anonymous hasn't been heard from since he left his note last night at 8:30 PM nor after I answered him.

Conservatives are never better at their jobs than when they've attained power sufficient to allow them to propose and pass laws that institutionalize their rancid bigotry. 

Now that our Bigot-elect, Donnie Little Hands, is set to take the Oath of Office and unleash the Dogs of Hate across America, the Goopers feel emboldened to reassert their right to repress the old, the sick, the young, religious minorities, voter minorities, women, and, of course, the focus of their most virulent hatred, the LGBTQ community.

They mean to shove our gay brothers and sister and others in the LGBTQ community back into the closet and give power to those whose fondest dream is to make life miserable for other Americans. 

By passing this anti-freedom legislation, the Republicans will federalize hatred, discrimination, and repression.

Republican Utah senator Mike Lee told BuzzFeed that he planned to reintroduce the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) next term, and said he was confident president-elect Trump would sign it. 

 FADA, or HR 2802, would grant protection to individuals who opposed same-sex marriage or premarital sex. In other words, discriminatory action could not be taken against people who discriminate against LGBT members. 

Discriminatory action includes denying someone tax exemptions, withholding grants or contracts or denying federal benefits. 


The bill is co-sponsored by Texas senator and former presidential candidate Ted Cruz. He said: “The prospects for protecting religious freedom are brighter now than they have been in a long time.” "Hopefully November’s results will give us the momentum we need to get this done next year," 

Conn Carroll, Lee’s spokesman, told BuzzFeed. "We do plan to reintroduce FADA next Congress and we welcome Trump’s positive words about the bill." 

 In North Carolina, popstars, athletes and big corporations all boycotted the state in response to an anti-LGBT bill which was signed under governor Pat McCrory. The bill is likely to be repealed under the newly elected Democratic governor, but the proposed FADA federal bill, if it came into power, would cast doubt over the legality of such a boycott.

The more important cases are ones like hospitals refusing to treat LGBT people (or their children), pharmacies refusing to fill birth control prescriptions, businesses refusing to offer health benefits to a same-sex partner, and state-funded adoption agencies refusing to place kids with gay families. Underneath the rhetorical BS, that’s what FADA is all about.
First, the bill applies to any corporation, organization, or person who “believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.” 

Notice how broad that is: any business, agency, or individual, including government employees, hospitals, or huge businesses like Hobby Lobby or Chick-Fil-A. Old-age homes and hospices that turn away gay people – yes, this has actually happened – are covered. 

Hospitals that refuse a same-sex partner visitation rights – covered. National hotel chains that refuse to rent rooms to gay couples (or unmarried straight ones) – covered. And notice that it applies not just to religious beliefs about same-sex marriage, but also to sexual conduct in general. Translation: contraception, sex education, treatment of STDs – all of these are part of the bill. If a national pharmacy chain wants to refuse to fill prescriptions for the “morning after pill,” if a company wants to fire someone for being pregnant out of wedlock or becoming HIV positive, if a public school wants to stop teaching sex ed – all covered.
