Here are some interesting facts about today's Winter Solstice.


SATURNALIA:


Saturnalia, held in mid-December, is an ancient Roman pagan festival honoring the agricultural god Saturn. Saturnalia celebrations are the source of many of the traditions we now associate with Christmas. 


During Saturnalia, work and business came to a halt. Schools and courts of law closed, and the normal social patterns were suspended. People decorated their homes with wreaths and other greenery, and shed their traditional togas in favor of colorful clothes known as synthesis. Even slaves did not have to work during Saturnalia, but were allowed to participate in the festivities; in some cases, they sat at the head of the table while their masters served them. 

 Instead of working, Romans spent Saturnalia gambling, singing, playing music, feasting, socializing and giving each other gifts. Wax taper candles called cerei were common gifts during Saturnalia, to signify light returning after the solstice.



Originally celebrated on December 17, Saturnalia was extended first to three and eventually to seven days. The date has been connected with the winter sowing season, which in modern Italy varies from October to January. Remarkably like the Greek Kronia, it was the liveliest festival of the year. All work and business were suspended. Slaves were given temporary freedom to say and do what they liked, and certain moral restrictions were eased. The streets were infected with a Mardi Gras madness; a mock king was chosen (Saturnalicius princeps); the seasonal greeting io Saturnalia was heard everywhere. The closing days of the Saturnalia were known as Sigillaria, because of the custom of making, toward the end of the festival, presents of candles, wax models of fruit, and waxen statuettes which were fashioned by the sigillarii or manufacturers of small figures in wax and other media. The cult statue of Saturn himself, traditionally bound at the feet with woolen bands, was untied, presumably to come out and join the fun. 

 The influence of the Saturnalia upon the celebrations of Christmas and the New Year has been direct. The fact that Christmas was celebrated on the birthday of the unconquered sun (dies solis invicti nati) gave the season a solar background, connected with the kalends of January (January 1, the Roman New Year) when houses were decorated with greenery and lights, and presents were given to children and the poor. 


IS CHRISTMAS A PAGAN HOLIDAY? 

Thanks to the Roman Empire’s conquests in Britain and the rest of Europe from the second century B.C. to the fourth century A.D.—and their suppression of older seasonal rites practiced by the Celts and other groups—today’s Western cultures derive many of their traditional celebrations of midwinter from Saturnalia.

 The Christian holiday of Christmas, especially, owes many of its traditions to the ancient Roman festival, including the time of year Christmas is celebrated. The Bible does not give a date for Jesus’ birth; in fact, some theologians have concluded he was probably born in spring, as suggested by references to shepherds and sheep in the Nativity story.

 But by the fourth century A.D., Western Christian churches settled on celebrating Christmas on December 25, which allowed them to incorporate the holiday with Saturnalia and other popular pagan midwinter traditions. Pagans and Christians co-existed (not always happily) during this period, and this likely represented an effort to convince the remaining pagan Romans to accept Christianity as Rome’s official religion. Before the end of the fourth century, many of the traditions of Saturnalia—including giving gifts, singing, lighting candles, feasting and merrymaking—had become absorbed by the traditions of Christmas as many of us know them today.

'Trump- GOP tax bill 'essentially' repeals ObamaCare 

Trump on Wednesday claimed the Republican tax plan “essentially” repeals former President Obama’s signature health-care law. “When the individual mandate is being repealed, that means ObamaCare is being repealed,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. 

“We have essentially repealed ObamaCare and we will come up with something much better.”

Trump had 11 months and the Goopers have had 7 years to come up with "something much better," and they haven't. Trump, of course, is a liar, and the Goopers in Congress are monsters. Never forget that they are all covered with top-shelf health care, so they and their families are safe, while Americans who pay their salaries will be left without any health care now that Trump has done the dirty deed.

Trump is now at 35% approval. He's a minority president whose policies are hated by a majority of the American people, yet he and the goons in his party have betrayed the American people with this multi-billion dollar Christmas present for billionaires and crumbs for the rest of us.

Who originally made war on Christmas?

The deeply religious Christian Puritans of Massachusetts Bay Colony, that's who.

So all of that fake controversy about THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS by the propaganda arm of the GOP, FAUX NOOZ, and the Liar-in-Chief's claim that he, and he alone, is bringing back saying "Merry Christmas," is nothing more than a cheap stunt to keep the low-information voters glued to their teevees, shaking their fists at all the heatherns keeping the Baby Jesus out of Xmas!

The very religious Puritans of Massachusetts Bay Colony were the original grinches who prohibited the early colonials from saying "Merry Christmas," who made it illegal to say "Merry Christmas," and who kicked the Baby Jesus out of Christmas.

So when you hear the Liar-in-Chief blubbering about how he's put the "Merry" back in "Christmas," we should all laugh in his face. American presidents have always wished Americans "Merry Christmas," and President Obama said "Merry Christmas" as POTUS for much longer than President Happy Hands.

On January 20, 2017, I stood on the steps of the Capitol to herald the day the people became the rulers of their nation again. Now, less than one year later, I am proud to report that the entire world has heard the news and already has seen the signs that America is coming back, and that America is coming back strong."



Those words were spoken by a deluded nincompoop who is out of touch with the people he's supposed to be leading and listening to:

A majority of the American people wanted to keep Obamacare and improve it; trump and his goons will kill it and throw millions of men, women, children, and infants off of their insurance plans.

A majority of the American people are concerned with global climate change; trump and his goons pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord, making America the only country that rejects the overwhelming science that informs the accord.

A majority of the American people do NOT support or want the GOP tax bill; trump and his goons are going forward with a tax bill that will add trillions more to the deficit and will enrich trump and other billionaires and GOP lawmakers. It will hurt the poor and middle class, the people, you remember, the Liar-in-Chief vowed to listen to and to allow them to "reclaim" ownership of the nation. The only thing they and their children and grandchildren will "reclaim" is more crushing debt.

The entire world, except for Russia, Israel, and Turkey detest the American POTUS. He's embarrassed this  once great country and is mocked and ridiculed to the point where our closest and most reliable ally, Great Britain, does not want him to visit their country. The Brits, along with the rest of the world, despise trump.

One more thing:  Here at home, the so-called POTUS is despised and mocked and ridiculed by a majority of the American people. Only 30% support this jackass and his plutocracy. He has the lowest approval numbers of any new presidency in modern American history. 

And we haven't even mentioned the 19+ women who've accused this libertine of sexual predation and harassment; the fact-checking that shows he has lied to the American people more than any other American president; and that he and his young administration is under FBI criminal investigation for possible obstruction of justice and cooperating with a hostile foreign government to win the 2016 presidential election. Members of his campaign and administration have already been indicted and charged with felonies.

Well, this is assuring -- NOT!

Former Intelligence Chief James Clapper: Putin Is Handling Trump Like A Russian ‘Asset’

Vladimir Putin is cultivating Donald Trump as if the U.S. president is a Russian asset, according to former intelligence chief James Clapper. 

 “[Putin] knows how to handle an asset, and that’s what he’s doing with the president,” Clapper said Monday on CNN. 

 Clapper, who served as director of national intelligence under President Barack Obama, called the Russian president a “great case officer.” 

 “You’re saying that Russia is handling President Trump as an asset?” CNN’s Jim Sciutto asked. 

“That seems to be... that’s the appearance to me,” replied Clapper. 

 Later in the conversation, Sciutto circled back to the “asset” comments. 

 “I’m saying this figuratively,” Clapper clarified, adding: “We have to remember Putin’s background. He’s a KGB officer. That’s what they do. They recruit assets, and I think some of that experience and instincts of Putin is coming to play here in his managing a pretty important account for him, if I could use that term, with our president.”

The Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress sees a divine hand at work: “God intervened in our election and put Donald Trump in the Oval Office for a great purpose.” 

 Of course, what Graham means is “Trump will repress the rights of people not like us.” Which is the major tenant of the this new protestant faith. Testimonials like this confound critics who label conservative evangelical figures like Mr. Graham and Mr. Jeffress hypocrites for embracing a man who is pretty much the human embodiment of the question “What would Jesus not do?” 

 But what those critics don’t recognize is that the nationalistic, race-baiting, fear-mongering form of politics enthusiastically practiced by Mr. Trump and Roy Moore in Alabama is central to a new strain of American evangelicalism. 

This emerging religious worldview — let’s call it “Fox evangelicalism” — is preached from the pulpits of conservative media outlets like Fox News. It imbues secular practices like shopping for gifts with religious significance and declares sacred something as worldly and profane as gun culture.

Trump's government -- the CDC to be exact -- has banned the use of seven specific words.

You read that right. I never dreamed I would be typing this, but there it is. Trump's CDC is banning seven words and phrases (what will the penalty be should a government worker defy Trump's odious edict? Imprisonment? Banishment? Torture?  (Trump does believe in waterboarding). Firing squad?

The seven words and phrases are:  "FETUS, TRANSGENDER, VULNERABLE, ENTITLEMENT, DIVERSITY, EVENDENCE-BASED, AND SCIENCE-BASED."

Every American should use those words and phrases in everything they write whether it is part of the subject matter or not. All media, electronic or print, should publish those words and continue to do so until this madness ends.

Trump administration officials are forbidding officials at the nation's top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases - including "fetus" and "transgender" - in any official documents being prepared for next year's budget. 

 Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are: "vulnerable," "entitlement," "diversity," "transgender," "fetus," "evidence-based" and "science-based." 

 In some instances, the analysts were given alternative phrases. Instead of "science-based" or "evidence-based," the suggested phrase is "CDC bases its recommendations on science in consideration with community standards and wishes," the person said. 

In other cases, no replacement words were immediately offered. The question of how to address such issues as sexual orientation, gender identity and abortion rights - all of which received significant visibility under the Obama administration - has surfaced repeatedly in federal agencies since President Donald Trump took office. Several key departments - including Health and Human Services, which oversees CDC, as well as Justice, Education and Housing and Urban Development - have changed some federal policies and how they collect government information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

White House officials have claimed they purposefully leave information on Russian interference out of Donald Trump’s daily briefings for fear it will upset him. 

 Current and former administration officials told the Washington Post they frequently plan the President’s daily brief (PDB,) around his suspected emotional reactions. Information about Russia, and its alleged attempts to influence the American political system, is among the most likely to set him off. “If you talk about Russia, meddling, interference – that takes the PDB off the rails,” a former senior US intelligence official told the Post.

Incredibly, the Trumpistas still believe Roy Moore was a great candidate who would have won except for the "Enemedia" who went after this sterling example of a great American.



Here's what makes him so admired by the current GOP:

. He broke the law TWICE when he was a Alabama supreme court justice and was thrown off the court.

. He said Muslims should not hold political office in the U.S.

. He's compared the LGBT community to beasts

. He believes 9/11 was caused because America turned away from God.

. He sided with former Communist head of the KGB, Putin, in opposition to gay marriage

. He believes parts of the U.S.A. are under Sharia Law.

. He had no idea what the Dreamer Act was when asked in a interview

. He doesn't believe President Obama was born in America

. He was credibly accused (with meticulous reporting) of molesting teenage girls when he was a 30+-year-old man.


That describes where the current GOP is. Go to any far right news site like Breitbart or read any far right blog and understand that 30% of American voters consider this deplorable extremist a fine example of an American who should have been seated in the U.S. Senate.

The far rightie Trumpistas blame the media, the "swamp," for Moore's loss, and the women who came forward with their stories of Moore's alleged sexual abuse, claiming it was "normal" for men to approach children for sexual favors, even marriage, because that was southern culture in the 1960s. These are the same hypocrites who fall on their fainting couches and are the first to scream at liberals "HYPOCRITE!" when reports are published about how extremist religious Muslims force child marriages.

Roy Moore lost because he was a disgraceful, discredited, lawless, alleged child molester who, while acceptable to the current Republican Party, was so horrid a candidate that he lost to a Democrat in the reddest of red states.

Will the current Republican Party ever understand that America was repulsed by the circus that was Roy Moore's candidacy? No. They're too far gone into madness for that.

(CNN)USA Today isn't known for its blistering opinion pieces. Which makes the one the paper's editorial board just published on President Donald Trump all the more savage. 

 "With his latest tweet, clearly implying that a United States senator would trade sexual favors for campaign cash, President Trump has shown he is not fit for office," reads the editorial. 

"Rock bottom is no impediment for a president who can always find room for a new low." 

 The reference here is Trump's tweet Tuesday morning in which he said that Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York was "begging" him for campaign contributions not long ago "and would do anything for them." 

 White House press secretary Sarah Sanders insisted Tuesday that only people with their minds "in the gutter" could possibly conclude that there was sexual innuendo in that tweet language. 

The USA Today editorial didn't buy that explanation. 

"A president who would all but call Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand a whore is not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library or to shine the shoes of George W. Bush."



Donald Trump said that "Alabama is a state that loves me the most."

Massachusetts Named Healthiest State in America

2017 State RankingsMassachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Utah, and Connecticut rank as the five healthiest states,while West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi rank the least healthy.




(CNN)Despite years of efforts to even out health disparities across the United States, some states are dramatically healthier than others, according to a new report. Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Utah and Connecticut rank as the five healthiest states, while West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi rank the least healthy in America's Health Rankings, according to the report by the United Health Foundation.

The rankings take into account a variety of health factors, such as rates of infectious diseases, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking and infant mortality, as well as air pollution levels and the availability of health care providers.

This is the first time Massachusetts has been named the healthiest state, ending Hawaii's five-year reign


The Bay State won the honor in part due to having the lowest percentage of uninsured residents at just 2.7% of the population, plus a low prevalence of obesity and a high number of mental health providers.


Mississippi and Louisiana, ranked 49th and 50th, have major health challenges, according to the report, including a high prevalence of smoking, obesity and children in poverty.











It is sad to look at the maps in the above link and understand that the states with the worst health ratings are states that are governed by Republican governors and where voters continue to vote against their self interest.

Massachusetts is not just the healthiest state, it is also the best educated. I believe that being intelligent voters in making quality of life choices produces a healthy population. We have the lowest uninsured population in America. Perhaps there's a link between giving people access to quality health care and having a healthy population. It's just plain smart.

It's a shame so many Gooper Americans don't understand that basic fact.

BTW, it is also noteworthy that Massachusetts has had more Republican governors than Democratic governors to balance the always heavily Democratic state legislature. Also, our Republican governors are not insane, like the present people who have taken over the GOP.  

Massachusetts is smart, we would NEVER vote for the sort of Republicans that have infected and ruined the Party of Lincoln.

But #45 has it all wrong. It's the GOP in Alabama that is ready to "do anything for" him --  to elect to the US Senate a credibly accused child molester (9+ women) and a man who broke the law and was kicked off of the Alabama state supreme court twice.


Those are  the current GOP's "family values."
