Trump Canceled Trip To Cemetery Honoring Slain Soldiers Who He Called ‘Losers

"President Trump reportedly skipped his scheduled visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 after dismissing the U.S. soldiers who died during the Battle of Bellaeu Wood as “losers.” According to a report in The Atlantic published Thursday, Trump’s excuses of “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him to the cemetery in France due to the rain were false claims.

 Citing four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day, The Atlantic reported that the President was reluctant to pay a visit to the cemetery in France honoring slain American soldiers because of concerns that his hair would become disheveled in the rain. Additionally, Trump reportedly mocked the soldiers who died during the Battle of Bellaeu Wood during a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit. “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers,” Trump said, according to The Atlantic. 

 The Atlantic also reported that Trump characterized the more than 1,800 marines who died in the Battle of Belleau Wood as “suckers” during a separate conversation on the same trip. Trump also asked aides, “who were the good guys in this war?” and expressed that he didn’t understand why the U.S. would intervene on the side of the Allies. 

 The Battle of Belleau Wood in the spring of 1918 proved to be consequential in that it was the first large-scale battle fought by American soldiers in World War I. The U.S. Marines and Allied forces had stopped the German advance toward Paris in the forested area. After weeks of the Marines launching attacks, Americans prevailed, but at the cost of nearly 10,000 dead, wounded, or missing in action."

The Pentagon has ordered Stars and Stripes to shut down for no good reason

Trump wants to pull funding from Stars and Stripes, a newspaper for American troops that began in the Civil War and has been serving our soldiers.

Even for those of us who are all too wearily familiar with President Donald Trump’s disdain for journalists, his administration’s latest attack on the free press is a bit of a jaw-dropper.

In a heretofore unpublicized recent memo, the Pentagon delivered an order to shutter Stars and Stripes, a newspaper that has been a lifeline and a voice for American troops since the Civil War. The memo orders the publisher of the news organization (which now publishes online as well as in print) to present a plan that “dissolves the Stars and Stripes” by Sept. 15  including "specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space worldwide.”

“The last newspaper publication (in all forms) will be September 30, 2020,” writes Col. Paul Haverstick Jr., the memo’s author.

President Trump on Wednesday suggested supporters in North Carolina should illegally attempt to vote both by mail and in person, saying doing so would test the integrity of the system. 

 Asked by reporters whether he trusted North Carolina’s mail-in balloting system, the president responded, "Let them send it in, and let them go vote, and if their system's as good as they say it is, then obviously they won't be able to vote. If it isn't tabulated, they'll be able to vote." 

 "If it's as good as they say it is, then obviously they won't be able to vote. If it isn't tabulated, they'll be able to vote. So that's the way it is. And that's what they should do," he added. 

Voting more than once in the same election is illegal.

How has Trump encouraged violence? 

Apparently, the Trumper who wrote this is either lazy or can't handle the truth. A quick Google search found dozens and dozens of instances that connect Trump's rhetoric and incitements to physical violence by his supporters. 

Here are just a few:

After a Latino gas station attendant in Gainesville, Florida, was suddenly punched in the head by a white man, the victim could be heard on surveillance camera recounting the attacker’s own words: “He said, ‘This is for Trump.'" Charges were filed but the victim stopped pursuing them.

When police questioned a Washington state man about his threats to kill a local Syrian-born man, the suspect told police he wanted the victim to "get out of my country," adding, "That’s why I like Trump."

Reviewing police reports and court records, ABC News found that in at least 12 cases perpetrators hailed Trump in the midst or immediate aftermath of physically assaulting innocent victims. In another 18 cases, perpetrators cheered or defended Trump while taunting or threatening others. And in another 10 cases, Trump and his rhetoric were cited in court to explain a defendant's violent or threatening behavior.

This 17 year old, who is not old enough to buy alcohol, vote, or even join the military, joined up with a white supremacist "boogaloo" group, took his firearm to Kenosha, and is accused of killing people who were exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

 Please note that, as a personal matter, and on behalf of all of my fellow disabled veterans who are equally dependent on receiving their meds by mail, there is nothing short of death that can stop me from voting for Biden-Harris on election day. NOTHING."

Trump frankly acknowledged that he’s starving the U.S. Postal Service of money to make it harder to process an expected surge of mail-in ballots, which he worries could cost him reelection. 

In an interview on Fox Business Network, Trump explicitly noted two funding provisions that Democrats are seeking in a relief package that has stalled on Capitol Hill. Without the additional money, he said, the Postal Service won’t have the resources to handle a flood of ballots from voters who are seeking to avoid polling places during the coronavirus pandemic. 

“If we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money,” Trump told host Maria Bartiromo on Thursday. “That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting; they just can’t have it.” 

Trump’s statements, including the false claim that Democrats are seeking universal mail-in voting, come as he is searching for a strategy to gain an advantage in his November matchup against Joe Biden. He’s pairing the tough Postal Service stance in congressional negotiations with an increasingly robust mail-in-voting legal fight in states that could decide the election.

By now, it’s no secret that Trump and his allies are trying to sabotage the Postal Service. 

The question is what Democrats will do in response. Republicans have had their crosshairs on the USPS for decades now, and for the usual conservative reasons: it’s a national service that they would prefer be wholly privatized and parceled off for profit. But the circumstances around the COVID pandemic the 2020 election make the continued ability of the Postal Service to handle ballots in a timely manner an life-or-death battle for American democracy itself. 

 Put bluntly, Democrats do better in elections the more people vote; the pandemic makes voting in person more dangerous; universal mail voting increases voter turnout and bypasses a variety of traditional conservative voter suppression strategies; and Donald Trump has convinced a large number of Republicans to avoid mail voting, such that most of the mail-in vote is likely to come from Democratic voters. 

Trump and his Republican allies are currently performing poorly in public polling, further incentivizing them to try to narrow the electorate through suppression of opposing communities. Trump and McConnell are refusing to allow money to fund the Postal Service as part of a new COVID relief package, and Trump just admitted to doing so as part of an attempt to hamper mail-in voting.

During the worst pandemic since 1918, the Republican Party has convinced itself and, sadly, its followers that expert advice is "elitist," and belief in conspiracies and other stupidities are what is needed to survive this pandemic.

We know that the GOP's president has had a large influence in getting people to disrespect and suspect the experts in epidemology, virology, as well as the doctors and nurses fighting Covid-19 on the front lines.

It's as though Trump and his true believers want to send more people to their unnecessary deaths.

Don't forget that Trump gets tested every day, and no one is allowed near him unless he or she has been tested. So Trump is personally careful about this very deadly, very contageous virus, but careless when it comes to protecting the American people.

He was stubbornly anti-facemasks for months and months, and only gave in to wearing them when it became politically necessary, and that was only for a brief time. He's careless about social distancing. One only needs to have seen his latest rally (disguised as a presser) this past weekend at his private golf club in New Jersey to understand Trump's recklessness and disregard for the safety of Americans during this crisis.

Looking at the MAGA-hat-wearing audience members at a Trump rally or bikers swarming South Dakota, one can only conclude that they are prime examples of groupthink. And it is members of these groups who are most likely to oppose wearing masks and other public health measures to contain this pandemic. What we are witnessing is, in fact, an expression of effective, targeted propaganda, starting with the president at the top and his media supporters.
