The Madness of President Trump

“The problem is that we need a party that’s going to fight. And we have some great congressmen and women that are doing it. And we have others, some great fighters. But we won this in a landslide. They know it, and we need backing from — like the Justice Department and other people have to finally step up.” --Donald J. Trump, Dec. 21, 2020

"There is no role for the U.S. military in determining the outcome of an American election." — Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy

The above is somewhat comforting, but the fact that the Army secretary would need to make such a public statement has to be a first in American history.

It is increasingly obvious that Donald J. Trump is losing his mind. He has given up any pretense of governing and is spending what is left of his time in office in seditious plans to overthrow the free and fair election that he lost.

And where is the Republican Party as Trump and his Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight conspire to shred our Constitution in order to keep this American despot in power?

I'm tired of Republicans declaring their adherence to "Constitutionalism." The past four years have made plain that the GOP doesn't care a whit what the Constitution actually says. I think it would be helpful if everyone stopped calling Trump and Trumpists "Conservatives." Whatever these people are, conservative isn't it.

At this point the label is more propaganda then anything else. Trump is, strangely enough, apolitical, in that his politics (as in everything else) is entirely self-interested. If it helps him, makes him money, makes the base love him, or "owns the libs" he's for it. His continued fight to tear down American democracy demonstrates this. He would rather destroy the American system of government than lose; and if he is going to lose, he's going to do as much damage (and make as much money) as he can before he gets the boot.

Those who follow him are more Stalinist/bolshevik than anything else--party above all, and leader above party. They are completely on board with overturning an election because they don't like the outcome. And I don't believe for a second more than a handful actually believe Trump won. They don't care. They're more than happy to tear down everything in order to keep Trump in power. They will call whatever is left "America"--because for them America is only them and Trump.

Trump is the Republican Party and the Republican Party is Trump. The GOP has surrendered whatever was left of its principles to a liar, a cheat, and a fraud.

And that, my friends, will forever be the GOP's legacy.

Please read this:

"In the past two days, stories in major papers have focused on the president’s deteriorating mental state. The Atlantic ran a story by Peter Wehner titled “Trump is Losing His Mind.” It describes “Trump’s descent into madness.” Politico ran Michael Kruse’s story titled “Is Trump Cracking Under the Weight of Losing?”

”[T]he actual fact of the matter,” it said, is that “Trump is a loser.” Kruse points to Trump’s uncharacteristic absence from the public eye to wonder if he is breaking down mentally. “His fragile ego has never been tested to this extent,” Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen told Kruse. “While he’s creating a false pretense of strength and fortitude, internally he is angry, depressed and manic. As each day ends, Trump knows he’s one day closer to legal and financial troubles. Accordingly, we will all see his behavior deteriorate until it progresses into a full mental breakdown.”

Yesterday, Erica Newland, a former lawyer for the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice, published an op-ed in the New York Times saying she is “Haunted by What I Did as a Lawyer in the Trump Justice Department.” Lawyers like her, she said, hoped they were limiting the damage Trump could do but were instead, she concluded, finding ways to make his demands legal. Represented by the caliber of lawyers who are currently at his side—Giuliani and Powell, for example—Newland argues, he could never have made anything stick. Newland resigned from her post in 2018 and now says, “No matter our intentions, we were complicit.” They helped enable Trump’s assault on our democracy, and on reality. She offered her apology to the nation.

Meanwhile, right-wing media outlets Fox News Channel, Newsmax, and One America News are also concerned with the law. They are madly backpedaling as they face the consequences of their baseless accusations against election software company Smartmatic. Although that company was involved in the 2020 election only in Los Angeles County, right-wing media personalities have accused it of altering votes in several states in the 2020 presidential contest. The lawyer for the company’s founder, Antonio Mugica, has sent letters to the FNC, Newsmax, and OAN demanding that they retract their stories and warning them to keep documents for a forthcoming defamation suit. Voting machine manufacturer Dominion Voting Systems, also included in the news stories, has also hired legal counsel. The threat of lawsuits has prompted the FNC and Newsmax to “clarify” at some length that they had no evidence of any of the improprieties they alleged. On Newsmax, John Tabacco also had to clarify that there was no relationship between Dominion Voting Systems and Dianne Feinstein, the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, George Soros, Hugo Chavez, or the government of Venezuela.

As he descends into the fever swamps, Trump has largely given up any pretense of governing. His public schedule remains empty, and his private meetings appear to focus on how he can stay in office.

Today [12/21] we learned that Russian hackers broke into the email system used by the leadership of the Treasury Department, but the cyberattack from Russia has gone unaddressed except to the extent the president tried to blame the attack on China (although he has made no move to retaliate against China for the attack). He has made little attempt to shepherd any sort of an economic relief bill through Congress. And, most crucially, he is silent about the epidemic that is killing us. As of this evening, more than 18 million Americans have been infected with the coronavirus, and at least 319,000 have died."

HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE!

One of my favorites. Jethro Tull, Ring Out Solstice Bells:

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium — sol meaning "sun" and -stitium "stoppage." The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. From now on, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. In ancient cultures, the winter solstice was an auspicious moment. It meant the end of declining hours of sunlight and provided a sense of renewal as the Sun began its daily climb higher in the sky.

Winter-solstice celebrations could well be the world's oldest holidays. There are more known rituals associated with this solstice than for any other time of the year.

Prior to the Christian era, Romans called this day Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. Earlier in Rome it was the time of Saturnalia, dedicated to the sun god Saturn, characterized by charity and gift-giving.

In the 4th century when they converted to Christianity, they turned their festival of the sun’s rebirth into a celebration of a different son’s birth.  In 46 BC the winter solstice fell around December 25th. Despite calendar reforms, these celebrations — and the observance of Christmas by early Christians — remained locked to the 25th.

Asian, Middle Eastern, North and South American cultures all had, and still have, festivals marking the rebirth of the sun.

When the Vikings became Christians, they brought Nordic solstice traditions: evergreen trees, holly, and mistletoe, all symbols of life in the dark winter.

Seditious Trump and his enablers.

How Long Can This Continue?

The United States Military will not break the law. There will be no coup. You can count on that. We will survive. But Donald Trump is an evil man. He’s batshit crazy and never should have gotten this far down Lunatic Lane. That’s on the f**kers formerly known as the GOP.

I’m not worried about the military. I’m worried about his supporters who are armed to the hilt. You know, the ones willing to plot to kidnap and kill a sitting governor.

Every time Trump goes into something crazy and holds on to it for more than a few days, it’s because something much worse is going on somewhere else in government, and he’s distracting us.

It would be nice if we knew more about this Russian hack, eh?

Read this from Toronto Globe and Mail to put a smile on your face and hope in your heart:

Is this true? Did he really imply this?

Trump has reportedly said he was considering not leaving the White House. I’m quite sure there are many Americans who would gladly see him physically removed.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY:

"Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives one year ago today.

The articles of impeachment charged him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress." --Geoff Bennett

Trump has exceed expectations in every regard of "dirty politics" and been openly vindictive to citizens ever since. However history records the last 4 years, the evidence of the Mueller report remains, "guilty with limitations to be charged & all involved pardoned."

Fascists for Trump

Fascists in America:

In case you’re defending things and don’t know what you’re defending.

The thug in the photo above is wearing an RWDS (Right Wing Death Squad) shirt that says 6MWE --that stands for "6 Million Wasn't Enough," referring to the number of Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust.

This is what you're defending when you defend the Proud Boys.

PS. The eagle is a fascist image used by pre-WW II Italy and the logo at the bottom of the t-shirt is a Roman fascio and is where the word "fascist" comes from.

These are actual fascists in the United States, the group that Americans gave their lives to defeat in WWII.

And they marched in the streets of Washington DC in support of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

This is where we are after four years of Donald Trump and the deplorable Republican Party.

If you think that's an exaggeration, read this:

"[North Carolina state GOP lawmaker, Bob] Steinburg, wasn’t alone among GOP lawmakers in suggesting that Trump suspend civil liberties, even after the electoral college finalized Biden’s win on Monday and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) publicly acknowledged the Democrat’s victory on Tuesday.

Virginia state Sen. Amanda F. Chase (R) on Tuesday also called for martial law, echoing a suggestion floated by Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser pardoned by the president last month."

Thoughts on yesterday's E.C. vote

UPDATE BELOW

Trump has left behind an unholy mess, and it's reasonable to assume he'll do what he can before inauguration to cause more damage -- that's the way he operates. Either you do exactly what he wants, or he'll use his power to cause you as much harm and grief as possible. However, it seems that the majority of Americans are committed to the values that are essential to the health of a democracy.

That's very hopeful.

The task now goes beyond simply trying to get back to normalcy. The last four years have uncovered serious flaws in the US system of government, and it would probably be unwise to think that Trump’s departure signals the end of the threat. The fact that so many GOP politicians could not get past extreme cowardice is very concerning. (To be fair, they probably would prefer to do the “right thing,” provided they could do so without personal cost.)

The US is approaching 250 years as a democracy. Perhaps it's time to see if a rebuild of some sort is called for. In particular, is there a downside to taking steps which will avoid a repeat of the chaos over the last few weeks? It's also worth considering whether there is some way to limit the ability of political parties to cause this sort of chaos and damage. This would be very difficult, if not impossible, at least not without risk to the political system -- a system that could have delivered a despot a second term.

We've learned some useful things. People were attracted to Trump because they felt they were marginalized. We've also learned that there are many GOP members of Congress who should be marginalized.

I think that most people will move on. The absence of Trump will be a huge relief for many, because we will not see the implicit endorsement of groups like the Proud Boys and other anti-American groups who are devoted to Trump. Trump's chaotic presidency has been a wake-up call to most Americans.

Other older and more experienced countries and civilizations have succumbed to dictators and autocrats, and this country is ripe for the picking, too, should we refuse to be vigilant and endeavor to preserve our democracy.

AMERICA GOT SOME GOOD NEWS TODAY!

Trump lost again!

Electoral College win for President-elect Joseph R. Biden!

BREAKING: Wisconsin Supreme Court tosses Trump’s bogus election lawsuit

Bill Barr resigns/was fired, who knows? He wouldn't say the election was stolen. He's out before Christmas. Good riddance!

Today's the day when Trump will ignore what the electors have to say and yell that he won BIGLY and that the election was stolen. (And he'll make lots of money off of his duped cultists who believe every lie he tells them.)

Members of the Electoral College will meet to officially elect Joe Biden, a moment some GOP lawmakers have targeted as the end of President Trump’s attempts to overturn results as far as they’re concerned.

Georgia's 16 Democratic electors, led by @staceyabrams, cast their votes for Joe Biden & Kamala Harris

The inimitable Steve Schmidt:

 BREAKING NEWS via REUTERS:

U.S. SUPREME COURT REJECTS TEXAS LAWSUIT BACKED BY TRUMP CHALLENGING BIDEN'S ELECTION WINS IN FOUR KEY STATES

It's finally OVER!!!!!

Conservative Steve Schmidt's Tweets:

"There will be no more Trumps in the White House.
There will be no Trumps on Air Force One or Marine One.
The idiot children and presidential in-laws will be stripped of their power and authority.

Trump will lose the presidential seal.
The American people decide our elections.
Joe Biden will restore honor, dignity, decency and competence to the presidency at the stroke of noon on Jan. 20, 2021.
Don’t let Trump’s absurdist spin and lies cause panic. Stay calm. Count the votes. When the counting is done, it will be the end of Trump’s cancerous term.
Donald Trump, what you did last night was unpardonable. You have lost. You will go. The trappings of power will be stripped from you.
The American people have rejected you. The states that elected you in 2016 have fired you. Your fate is sealed. The counting goes on, and it is getting darker by the moment for you. There is no legal basis for your absurd claims and legal actions. You will keep getting laughed out of court.

It’s almost over. Close your eyes, Donald Trump.

Now say President Joe Biden to yourself three times.
This isn’t going to look that close.

You have done such damage to this country.
Your crooked and inept family has desecrated the White House. History will brutally judge you.

Loser."

Schmidt again:

"Signing onto this Amicus brief is not a legal act. It is a political act.

Think about it as essentially repudiating and unsigning the Declaration of Independence.

They want a ruler not a President. It is a declaration of repudiation and hostility towards the American Republic. They want their leader Trump, who lost the election to remain in power. They are lying about an election Joe Biden won. They are poisoning faith and belief in democracy by explicitly repudiating it.

The actions of the 17 GOP State AG’s and 126 GOP House Members is an almost inconceivable act of betrayal. They have broken faith with America and desecrated the blood sacrifices of Patriots from Lexington to Gettysburg from Normandy to the Edmund Pettus bridge.

Trump has birthed an Autocratic movement. It has made its first move. If we lose this this country there is no place else for us to go. We are free because we are sovereign. We are a government of the people, for the people by the people. Politicians work for us and we can fire them. We choose. We are in a dangerous hour. It will be a long fight."

Will we know by 3 PM today?

106 Republican Congress members and 18 Republican attorneys general are insisting that a presidential election ought to be invalidated because their party lost. This is being treated by many as "no big deal" because we know they won't win. Instead it should be treated as the harbinger of Constitutional collapse that it is.

73 million Americans are brainwashed. They are the same folks who said President Obama wanted to "fundamentally change" America, and here is a POTUS and a major political party engaging in a seditious effort to overthrow the will of over 80 million voters and the US Constitution because the current Republican Party believes only it has the right to govern.

A friend wrote: "...what Trump was doing is dangerous. A month after losing, he has more GOP support for overturning the election than he did on 11/3. It's a result of his rhetoric, GA rally and Tweets. His enablers smell the power of his lies and can sense the danger.

And they like it."

"The situation today is not remotely connected," said Theodore Olson, the lawyer who argued victoriously in the 2000 Supreme Court case for Mr. Bush. "The voters should determine outcomes of elections, not masses of lawyers across the country."

Call it what this is:  SEDITION AGAINST THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

In Blistering Retort, 4 Battleground States Tell Texas to Butt Out of Election

The attorneys general of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia asked the Supreme Court to reject a lawsuit from Texas seeking to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victories.

WASHINGTON — In blistering language denouncing Republican efforts to subvert the election, the attorneys general for Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to reject a lawsuit that seeks to overturn the victories in those states by President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., calling the audacious effort an affront to democracy and the rule of law.

The lawsuit, filed by the Republican attorney general of Texas and backed by his G.O.P. colleagues in 17 other states and 106 Republican members of Congress, represents the most coordinated, politicized attempt to overturn the will of the voters in recent American history.

President Trump has asked to intervene in the lawsuit as well in hopes that the Supreme Court will hand him a second term he decisively lost.

Thursday, December 10, 2020

The Republican Party is quite literally becoming the enemy of American democracy.

BREAKING:  Trump is hosting all the AGS of the 18 states that are pushing for SCOTUS to overturn election tomorrow at the White House!

The Trumpublican Party is trying its best to turn America into a Banana Republic being led by Banana Republicans - full of bluster, yet absent of principles, ethics, patriotism, and contemptuous of democracy

Shame is irrelevant.

As are charges of hypocrisy.

The Party of Trump will never apologize or admit error or defeat. Attacking them as "enemies of democracy" is better, but still abstract. Make it as simple as possible -- the GOP doesn't think your vote matters. Or should even be counted. They don't care about you or your opinions. Or even whether you live or die. That's who they are.

We are living through an attempted coup.

And, yes, coups are in effect an act of war, a way of conquering a country.

Consider the lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asking the Supreme Court to essentially nullify the entire 2020 presidential election so it can be handed to President Trump, a suit about which Trump himself says, “This is the big one.”

It might have been just one more ridiculous publicity stunt by one of the many corrupt fools the GOP has managed to elect recently, but now, Republican attorneys general from 17 other states have signed on to the suit. The suit claims that election results in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin should be thrown out and the decision left to Republican-controlled legislatures in those states, presumably so they could simply appoint pro-Trump electors and make him the winner.

The entire premise of the suit is farcical. Republicans have not found evidence of fraud beyond ludicrous innuendo on the order of, “An election official gave one of our poll watchers a dirty look!,” and the idea that one state could demand that the Supreme Court overturn the election results of another is absurd.

I won’t go into the details except to say that Paxton’s “expert” took a statistical test meant to tell you if two samples differ — for instance, did one population who got a vaccine have different outcomes than another similar population who got a placebo? — and used it to “prove” that Joe Biden did better in these states than Hillary Clinton, and therefore … fraud!

In years to come, statistics instructors will use this lawsuit as a case study in how statistics can be misused and abused. It’s as if I said, “My nephew claimed he broke his arm, but a real live doctor has informed me that in fact he broke his humerus, and that shows he’s not my nephew at all!”

But the fact that Paxton is quite obviously an idiot doesn’t for a moment mitigate the horror of what’s happening here. This abomination of a lawsuit has the backing of the president, Republican state officials across the country, the conservative media and many Republicans in Congress, with some actively supporting it and others inviting Trump and his confederates to keep up the fight.

We knew Trump would do this.

We knew Trump would never accept the will of the people when they voted to kick him and his grifting family out of the White House.

Most of the usual far right news sites or blogs have mentioned nothing about the seditious threats being made by Trump and his cultists now that it is clear Trump has thoroughly and convincingly lost to Joe Biden.

The self-proclaimed "law and order" Trumpublicans have become a throng of mobsters calling for revenge and armed violence because their cult leader lost the election.

Some Republican governors and secretaries of state have stood firm in their resolve to follow the law and not give into Trump's illegal efforts to overthrow an election that was, as confirmed by his own people, the safest and cleanest in modern history.

Trump and his cultists will have none of it. There is no convincing them with facts, logic, or evidence (see the bogus "suitcases full of ballots" fake report). Cultists are immune to any truths that conflict with their conspiracy stories about a stolen election; they cannot face the truth of Trump's landslide loss.

I read the usual far right blogs from time to time but have found nothing on them condemning the calls for insurrection and violence by Trump's cultists. Apparently, when Trump cultists threaten violence after a fair and legal election, it's of no concern to them. Imagine if it were a Democratic president doing this.

There is no Republican Party.

Trump killed it.

There is only Trumpism and lawless thugs who've taken over a once proud political party.

As Trump Rails Against Loss, His Supporters Become More Threatening

The president’s baseless claims of voting fraud have prompted outrage among his loyalists and led to behavior that Democrats and even some Republicans say has become dangerous.

With a key deadline passing Tuesday that all but ends his legal challenges to the election, President Trump’s frenzied campaign to overturn the results has reached an inflection point: Certified slates of electors to the Electoral College are now protected by law, and any chance that a state might appoint a different slate that is favorable to Mr. Trump is essentially gone.

Despite his clear loss, Mr. Trump has shown no intention of stopping his sustained assault on the American electoral process. But his baseless conspiracy theories about voting fraud have devolved into an exercise in delegitimizing the election results, and the rhetoric is accelerating among his most fervent allies. This has prompted outrage among Trump loyalists and led to behavior that Democrats and even some Republicans say has become dangerous.

Supporters of the president, some of them armed, gathered outside the home of the Michigan secretary of state Saturday night. Racist death threats filled the voice mail of Cynthia A. Johnson, a Michigan state representative. Georgia election officials, mostly Republicans, say they have received threats of violence.

The Republican Party of Arizona, on Twitter, twice called for supporters to be willing to “die for something” or “give my life for this fight.” “People on Twitter have posted photographs of my house,” said Ann Jacobs, the chair of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, who alerted her neighbors and the police about the constant threats. She said another message mentioned her children and said, “I’ve heard you’ll have quite a crowd of patriots showing up at your door.”
