Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signals support for 'Don't Say Gay' bill

Despite fierce opposition from Democrats and LGBTQ advocates, the bill is gaining momentum in the Florida Legislature and is on the agenda for Tuesday's meeting of Senate Education Committee. A House version of the bill already received a favorable vote from its Education Committee in January. 

Opponents of the bill warn that it would lead to further stigmatization of gay, lesbian and transgender children, causing more bullying and suicides within an already marginalized community. They say the bill would eliminate LGBTQ history from the curriculum and prevent teachers from having discussions with their classrooms if questions about sexual orientation and gender identity come up.

The Florida Republican Senate controlled by Ron DeSantis is pushing through a bill that just passed a committee vote that would allow parents to sue a school (attorney fees if they win) if their child requests a vegetarian meal for lunch and they are not consulted.

Sen. @loriberman : "Am I right to read that this bill would allow a parent to sue a school if their child requests a vegetarian meal for lunch and they are not consulted? 

 Sen. Baxley: "Yes."

Suing over a vegetarian lunch? Is this "owning the libs" because a kid might not want to eat meat? 

I think not.

It's intimidation and control. Make the public school systems so susceptible to frivolous lawsuits that it bankrupts them, then let the private, for-profit religious schools roll in and take over to indoctrinate children. Straight out of the Betsy DeVos playbook.

Democrats have spent the last year working to restore America's economy, rebuilding our infrastructure, protecting our elections, combating the Coronavirus, and restoring the rule of law. 

Republicans have spent the last year working to protect gendered potato heads, whining about wearing a mask, assisting the spread of the Coronavirus, dismantling independent elections, and abolishing the rule of law.

In other related political news, the conservative National Review magazine published an editorial last weekend calling the RNC's censure of Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger "morally repellent and politically self-destructive." 

The same editorial goes on to call the censure document wording "political malpractice of the highest order coming from people whose entire job is politics," and suggests the RNC take a lesson from former VP Mike Pence.

Ketanji Brown Jackson: After graduating from high school, Jackson studied government at Harvard University, graduating in 1992 with an A.B. magna cum laude.  Jackson spent a year as a staff reporter and researcher for Time magazine, then attended Harvard Law School, where she was a supervising editor of the Harvard Law Review. She graduated in 1996 with a Juris Doctor cum laude. 

After law school, Jackson served as a law clerk to Judge Patti B. Saris of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts from 1996 to 1997, then to Judge Bruce M. Selya of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit from 1997 to 1998. 

She spent a year in private practice at the Washington, D.C. law firm Miller Cassidy Larroca & Lewin (now part of Baker Botts), then clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1999 to 2000. Jackson worked in private legal practice from 2000 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005, she served as an assistant special counsel to the United States Sentencing Commission. Leondra Kruger:  Kruger is an American judge who is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California and who attended Polytechnic School, a private day school, in Pasadena, California. She graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal, and was the first Black woman elected to the position.  

Kruger worked as an associate at the Jenner & Block law firm from 2001 until 2002. She then worked as a law clerk for Judge David Tatel on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 2002 until 2003. Kruger then clerked for Justice John Paul Stevens of the United States Supreme Court from 2003 until 2004.

Trump admitted to trying to overturn the 2020 election.

Trump indicted himself by saying out loud, during his Jan. 30 rally in Texas, that Pence "could have overturned the election." 

There it is. By making that statement, Trump admits that HE DID NOT WIN the election, and that he expected VP Pence to overturn it by not certifying the electoral votes and by counting them in Trump's favor -- "overturning the election!"

TRUMP:  “If the Vice President [Mike Pence] had 'absolutely no right' to change the Presidential Election results in the Senate, despite fraud and many other irregularities, how come the Democrats and RINO Republicans, like Wacky Susan Collins, are desperately trying to pass legislation that will not allow the Vice President to change the results of the election?”

”Actually, what they are saying, is that Mike Pence did have the right to change the outcome, and they now want to take that right away. Unfortunately, he didn't exercise that power, he could have overturned the Election!” 

Trump isn’t using some of the more coded language of his Republican defenders, many of who deny there was an effort to overturn the election. Instead, Trump is explicitly stating that he believes Pence should have “overturned the election.”

“He could have overturned the election.” This is an admission, and a massively un-American statement. It is time for every Republican leader to pick a side… Trump or the Constitution, there is no middle on defending our nation anymore.

Every insurrectionist who responded to Trump's call knew this. In a responsive attitude and behavior, they responded to his call. They trained in different states for months before. They trained tactical teams, amassed weapons and transportation. They made t-shirts flags and banners.

The Atlanta-area prosecutor who is weighing whether to bring election-related criminal charges against former president Donald Trump is seeking FBI help in securing a county courthouse and government center in the wake of “alarming” rhetoric from Trump at a rally this weekend. 

 In a letter Sunday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis pointed to comments from Trump at a rally in Texas about “racist” and “mentally sick” prosecutors examining a range of issues, including his company and his actions following the 2020 election. 

 “Security concerns were escalated this weekend by the rhetoric of former President Trump at a public event in Conroe, Texas that was broadcast and covered by national media outlets and shared widely on social media,” Willis said in her letter to J.C. Hacker, the special agent in charge of the Atlanta field office of the FBI. 

“His statements were undoubtedly watched by millions.” 

 In the letter, Willis asked that Hacker immediately conduct a risk assessment of the Fulton County Courthouse and Government Center and provide “protective resources to include intelligence and federal agents.” “We must work together to keep the public safe and ensure that we do not have a tragedy in Atlanta similar to what happened at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021,” Willis said.

Some of the Trump White House documents that were handed over to the House Select Committee on Jan. 6 by the National Archives and Records Administration were reportedly torn up and taped back together. 

Three sources familiar with the records told The Washington Post about the state of the administration documents, which the National Archives confirmed to the newspaper. 

 In a statement to The Post, the National Archives said that documents turned over from the Trump White House “included paper records that had been torn up by former President Trump." 

 “White House records management officials during the Trump Administration recovered and taped together some of the torn-up records," said the agency. "These were turned over to the National Archives at the end of the Trump Administration, along with a number of torn-up records that had not been reconstructed by the White House.

The Presidential Records Act requires that all records created by presidents be turned over to the National Archives at the end of their administrations. 

Notes made by the president are not his to destroy. They belong to the Federal government. Destroying those notes is against Federal law, for which Trump could and should be prosecuted.

In addition to President Reagan saying he would appoint a WOMAN (not just "the best qualified") to the SCOTUS, he also looked to appointing a person of "Italian extraction" (not just "the best qualified") to the Court as well.

No one accused Reagan of using affirmative action or being insulting to all other candidates on both of those actions.

I wonder what was different about his choice of the first female appointed to the Court and the first Italo-American appointed to the Court from President Biden's choice to appoint the first Black woman. Hmmmmmmm...?

It was unclear if those Nazi banners and demonstrators were connected to the rally on Saturday.

The newly elected governor of Virginia has instituted a "Inform on Your Teacher" policy. 

Stalin would be proud! Back in the day, he had a policy similar to Youngkin's:

Youngkin has created a tip line at helpeducation@governor.virginia.gov so that parents can report “divisive” teaching. Do we now pit parents against teachers? Will Virginia have teachers looking over their shoulders if they teach about race? Segregation? Slavery? Lynchings?

Trumpublicans constantly bleat that it is the Democrats who have lost their minds. They ignore what is right in front of their noses:

Virginia parent charged after she threatens to "bring every single gun loaded" over school's mask dispute 

 A Virginia mother was charged Friday after she said at a school board meeting that she would "bring every single gun loaded and ready" to fight mask requirements for her children." 

Amelia King later emailed the board to apologize for her choice of words, saying she was not referring to "actual firearms." The Luray Police Department said King, 42, was charged with making an oral threat on school property. She has since been released on a $5,000 bond, the department said. 

 King was seen on video making the comments at the Page County Public Schools board meeting on Thursday night, where members voted on whether face masks would continue to be required at the district's schools. When she was told she had run out of time to speak, she replied, "I'll see you all on Monday." 

 The US has gotten to the point where parents are threatening school shootings, because kids are asked to wear masks. The GOP enables and fuels this insanity.

Read some of their blogs and see them blaming Democrats (who advocate mask wearing) as being unhinged. I've yet to see a pro-masker at a school board meeting threaten to bring a gun "loaded and ready" unless all children are wearing masks.

But the Trumpublicans call Dems/pro-maskers "unhinged."

Multi-layer cloth masks block release of exhaled respiratory particles into the environment, along with any microorganisms associated with these particles. 

Cloth masks not only effectively block most large droplets (i.e., 20-30 microns and larger), but they can also block the exhalation of fine droplets and particles (also often referred to as aerosols) smaller than 10 microns which increase in number with the volume of speech and specific types of phonation.
